      27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
      28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
      29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
      30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
      31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
      39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
      40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
      41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
      42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

    7:00 Poor al-Ma'arri. He's getting it in the neck from the T Man. I must put in a good word for him. Al-Ma'arri, for those who don't know, was a free thinker and ex Muslim from Syria. I'm fond of him. Not merely because he was a kindred spirit, but because he's a skilled poet. Almost as good as Sulayman Murtad some have suggested, but I would not go that far myself. He's held in high esteem by apostates, and by lovers of Arabic poetry of all stripes. A bronze statue to him adorns the streets of his native home, defaced in latter years by Islamic fanatics.
    I say bronze, but I can't be bothered to look up what its constituted of. Call it poetic license. Anyway, his verse lampoons Islamic superstition and does it with courage and humour, and herein I think we on this channel may find much to admire. Especially for a guy who lived in the Middle Ages. The curious may find his satirical poems free of charge online. Worth a read
    I'm not familiar with the regrettable lines you quote from our lamented poet. Naturally, we frown on such things today, and rightly so, but his excuse is that he was blind, literally, and, being a man of his time, no doubt in some ways morally too. We sift the wheat from the chaff and hold up him as the Milton of Islam.

      I believe _Epistle of Forgiveness_ was written for pure entertainment and not religious edification. It is quoted as a reflection of the prevailing view of jannah at the time. Perhaps similar to the Decameron in flavor. I didn't know al-Ma'arri was an apostate - very interesting.

    • @sulaymanmurtad5434
      @sulaymanmurtad5434 Před rokem +2

      @@ReasonedAnswers _Edited:_ I hadn't been aware of Epistle of Forgiveness myself, so this was an education. I might place an order for it. Al-Ma'arri is a sweetheart. I can't find the online translation of his works that I most admire. I recall it was on some humanist web page or other. But a few lines if I may from sundry Internet sources:
      “The Prophets, too, among us come to teach,
      Are one with those who from the pulpit preach;
      They pray, and slay, and pass away, and yet
      Our ills are as the pebbles on the beach.”
      Not exactly in keeping with the ethos of Reasoned Answers this one, but a flavour of the man nevertheless:
      "They all err - Moslems, Christians, Jews, and Magians;
      Two make Humanity's universal sect:
      One intelligent without religion,
      And one religious without intellect."
      And another, this time about immortality:
      “We laugh, but inept is our laughter,
      We should weep, and weep sore,
      Who are shattered like glass and thereafter
      Remoulded no more.”
      This poem I just revisited again seems as fresh as the day I first read it:
      "Who'll rescue me from living in a town
      Where I am spoken of with praise unfit?
      Rich, pious, learned: such is my renown,
      But many a barrier stands between me and it.
      I admit to ignorance, yet wise was thought
      By some - and is not ours a wondrous case?
      For truly we all are good for naught:
      I am not noble nor are they base."
      I think every Christian can get behind that one. Some of my favourites are not about religion, like that one. Another is "I No Longer Steal From Nature", an ode to vegetarianism. In all of Islamic ethics you won't find anything so subtle and tender of heart.
      Here's a religious one more congenial to the spirit of Reasoned Answers:
      "To humankind, O Brother, consecrate
      Thy heart, and shun the hundred Sects that prate
      About the things they little know about -
      Let all receive thy pity, none thy hate."
      Finally, the witty epitaph inscribed on his tomb, from his own hand:
      "My father did this to me, but I to no one have done this."
      More Islamophobic blasts from the hoary scribe are below. Scroll down past the preface. The weblink is too long so I've used Tiny Url to shorten it:

He belongs to that minority of Muslim theologians whose exposure to Western thought has broadened their minds and their scope for tolerance. @@ReasonedAnswers Ok smart guy listen up on the day of judgment some people faces will shine bright and dark a white person's face can shine dark and a black person's fce can shine light it's talking about the day of judgement, not black people face stupid know to look at the old testament ur bible is really stupid in science 1) The Genesis 1 creation account conflicts with the order of events that are known to science. Genesis 1:1 The earth is created before light and stars, birds and whales before reptiles and insects, and flowering plants before any animals. From science, we know that the true order of events was just the opposite.
      2) “And God said, Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3) and “. . .And the evening and the morning were the first day” (Genesis 1 :5), versus “And God said, ‘Let there be light in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night….’ “And God made two lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also… And the evening and morning were the fourth day” (Genesis 1 :14-19). These violates two major facts. Light cannot exist without a sun, and secondly, how can morning be distinguished from evening unless there is a sun and moon? Christians try to claim that god is the light he is referring to yet, considering the context it is quite obvious that the light god is speaking of is the light emitted by the sun. Just another feeble attempt at trying to rationalize such a MAJOR blunder.
      3) God spends one-sixth of his entire creative effort (the second day) working on a solid firmament (Genesis 1:6-8). This strange structure, which God calls heaven, is intended to separate the higher waters from the lower waters. This firmament, if it existed, would have been quite an obstacle to our space program.
      4) Plants are made on the third day (Genesis 1:11) before there was a sun to drive their photosynthetic processes (Genesis 1:14-19).
