  • After Paul Lynde, the comedian voted America's favorite comic in 1974, passed away. Trace amounts of a sexual stimulant were found in his system. Do you think that the drugs found in Lynde's system contributed to his heart attack, or do you doubt that there was enough in his system to do any serious harm? Let us know in the comments section down below.

Paul Lynde was a gifted voice artist with Hanna-Barbara, game show panelist, and could shine in both comedic and dramatic roles as an actor. He was perhaps best known for being a character actor with a distinct snarky and campy persona. He's also known among the gay community as one of the first and most successful openly gay comedians. While he remained in the closet for the majority of his life, he eventually would let go of his fears and would become a gay icon of sorts.
Lynde was well known for his roles as the bumbling father Harry MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie and for being a regular center square panelist on the hit game show Hollywood Squares. But the role he is most often associated with is that of Uncle Arthur on Bewitched.
On January 10, 1982, Lynde was found dead in his Beverly Hills home by his friend Paul Barresi after failing to attend a birthday party and couldn't be reached by phone. He was only 55 years old when he passed away.
The coroner's report officially ruled Lynde's death as caused by a heart attack, but recent revelations have shed a bit more light on that. Join us as we take a look at what might have brought about his death while highlighting some of Lynde's contributions to the world of entertainment.

He lived when he was supposed to live. You are looking at him with rose tinted glasses. While his sexuality would be far more accepted (although his appearances on Hollywood squares definitely were not hiding this, and with hilarious results!) his racist views and personal attacks would not be accepted very well at all. Especially the racist views and comments. So yeah let's just leave him in his era, super talented and funny guy who helped pave some roads, also a flawed human who had his ugly sides and troubles like we all do. RIP Paul

While house bound during a snow storm a couple of years ago, Paul started a 4+ hour HOLLYWOOD SQUARES binge with all my family as competition. Paul was the common denominator for non-stop laughing. His one liners were cousins to Rodney Dangerfield’s creativity. Those two comedians were tops in the 70’s! Everyone in my family enjoyed HS more when Paul was introduced last…the honorary center square. He deserved it because he earned it! None of us cared if he was gay; that was his business, not ours. But I WAS disappointed to learn he was abusive when drinking, especially to law enforcement officers. 55 is such a young age to die but I will always remember him fondly for the hundreds of belly laughs. Rip Mr. Lynde.

If we had known he was gay, it would have made no difference. My parents taught us that everyone deserves respect until they show you that they don’t deserve it. Forcing us to accept his private life by blowing whistles, marching and yelling. Painting sidewalks, buildings and streets, that would have changed all our minds. Paul never did that. Great entertainer and Hollywood personality.

Many, if not most, comedians suffer from it. As well as a relentless need to be/feel loved, wanted & accepted.
They usually have low self esteem, hidden well under the laughs.
I used to book a couple comedy clubs in the early-mid 80s in Upstate NY. Spent a good deal of time in the city @ Caroline’s & Catch, scouting who I could/would book Upstate for a weekend. I had 3, usually. The opener, middle ma/woman & the main act.
I met & booked several powerhouses, before they were regular household names. And a few who were on the cusp of superstardom.
Even the superstars had anxiety issues. If they felt they didn’t “ kill” on stage, they were hell to deal with, off.
Little wonder why so many are alcohol & drug laden. And have multiple sex partners.
Their entire identity is wrapped up in their desperate need to be loved & wanted.
Whatever happened in their childhoods by those who caused it, is criminal.
Paul was quite typical, except his being gay, set him apart from most, at the time. And just added to his inner misery.
They are the most tortured, when alone.
      So sorry, Paul. 😔

I totally loved Paul on Hollywood Squares. He was so comic with all the things he come off with. I know he could get my Grandad laughing so hard he spill some of popcorn on the floor that he was eating at the time. 🙂
I also liked his appearances on Bewitch. It is a shame that drinking, drugs, and sex destroyed his life, like it sadly does for so many people. Even with his being gay it didn't stop him from being well liked on Hollywood Squares and many are bound to knew his sexuality. Others like Robert Reed and singers like Elton John had success during that time period and they too were gay.

Only they made the sheep character, Lambsie a continuing character along with the wolf and Sheep Dog in this series.

I remember him well as the voice of sneaky but lovable Templeton the Rat on that classic animated film from the 1970s Charlotte's Web. In those days an animated film meant animated. This meant they were drawn with love and care by human beings. These kind of films showed any amount of human caring or humanity in them. Much more than the completely soulless so called animated films today which has no humanity behind it. Films that are made either by electronics, computers or computerized graphics or CGI special effects, and not a touch of a person using a pen, pencil or paintbrush on canvas or paper. So Sad!

The character Uncle Arthur was only, "gay", because Paul was playing him as such. The character itself was asexual. No way Bewitched would touch that subject being a family comedy.

Paul was a great teacher. Sadly, many adults deny talent, promote ignorant fear, and fail to recognize the complexity of many celebrities. Privacy, exposure, and stalking anybody within extortion promotes incredulous perfection and kills loved ones. My family remains sponsors and collectors of art. We all adored Paul and appreciate every performer who dares to reach past local praise. MT Vernon, Toledo, Cincinnati, and Columbus frequently traveled to NY, LA, and TN before Branson. Vegas, PHX, and Frisco frequently dined within theaters, arenas, and fields, happy to stand in line for a local hero. I pray his legacy, family, and neighbors succeed past early bullies who remain inside the machine of financing, production, and distributing. Television, radio, and volunteers continue to host inside Civic patronage. A valet, courrier, and criticism can fuel joy past rejection. Bravo and Cronkite with Dorothy inspired Maddie, John, and Barbara, aside from 1969. Carol, Dianne, and Harry entertained this carpenter's family.

Although Paul was known for cruelty when drunk a young teenage female fan went to her library looking up info on Paul in 1975-6? She found his agents phone number but it was actually Paul’s home number. He promised to meet up in nyc with her and her father for 5 minutes and an autograph. They ended up enjoying 2 hours of conversation and this teenage female fan got his home address, was called by Paul every holiday time until his death and she wrote a biography. So he couldn’t be that bad of a guy
