  • Paul Lynde was a comedian, actor, and television personality who, among his many achievements, was known as a contestant on “Hollywood Squares.” Paul Lynde was born in the small town of Mount Vernon, Ohio, on June 13th, 1926. He began his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1950s and quickly became famous for his sharp wit, sarcastic humor, and campy voice. Lynde rose to prominence in the 1960s with his regular appearances on popular game shows like "Hollywood Squares." He became a fan favorite with his irreverent humor, deadpan delivery, and snappy comebacks, often stealing the show from his fellow panelists.

However, Paul Lynde's personal life was marked by struggles with addiction and mental health issues, which ultimately led to his departure from " Hollywood Squares" in the late 1970s. Despite his success on the show, he ultimately left the show in 1979. There was much speculation as to why Paul Lynde left the show, but we’ll get to that later. Despite this setback, Paul Lynde continued to work in Hollywood throughout the 1980s, appearing in a number of films and television shows. He was also known for his voiceover work, lending his distinctive voice to characters in animated series like "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop" and "Charlotte's Web."
Unfortunately, Lynde's health continued to deteriorate throughout the 1980s, and he passed away in 1982 at the age of 55. However, his legacy as a pioneering LGBTQ comedian and performer lives on, and his influence can be seen in the work of many contemporary comedians and actors.
Paul Lynde led a short life but he lived a great life. He was a comedic trailblazer who left an indelible mark on Hollywood and popular culture. While his struggles with addiction and mental health were a tragic part of his story, his talent and humor continue to inspire and entertain audiences to this day.

Stress will kill you quicker than anything, and the secret he was hiding, had to have caused a lot of stress. Well the environment I grew up in exposed me to a lot of homophobia, but when I was growing up, the two funniest guys on TV were Paul Lynde, and Charles Nelson Reilly. Their personal lives were nobody's g-d business, but they both died young, so that must've taken a toll.

I saw "Match Game" a time or three, and Brett Sommers, ( Jack Klugmans, aka, Oscar Madisons wife), loved Charles Nelson Reilly. That's when this hetero teen said, I ain't goin for none of that homophobic crap no more.

@FactsVerse I think you're doing a wonderful job. Your videos are always very entertaining. Sometimes, the wordings or titles could be a little bit more accurate. I was raised to never speak badly of the dead. So accurate descriptions are always important, plus it adds to your credibility and reliability, and that, in turn, gives you more viewers. I would love to see one of your videos on the sad ending of Angelo (Angel) Florez (1995), Some people may remember him from the 1977 New Mickey Mouse Club. He was a talented actor, dancer, and musician who passed away in his early thirties and his buried with his grandfather.
Similar to the story that you did on Montgomery Clift. An actor who died at an early age and had a terrible car accident due to heavy drinking and his face was severely damaged, almost stopping his career. He was a good friend of Elizabeth Taylor who helped him get his career going again. Sadly, he lost his life due to poor health and had a heart attack at age 45 in 1966. Great job that you did on the Montgomery Clift. video.
Another idea for a video would be on the beautiful child actress who quit hollywood at her peak Virginia Weidler. Most people will remember her from the movie the Philadelphia Story with Catherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, and Carry Grant. Sadly, she passed away at a young age if I remember correctly in her forties.

@matthewschwartz6607 Unfortunately, Montgomery Clift had a severe alcohol and drug problem due to prescription medication, which he himself even admitted. "Clift asserts that the actor's use of alcohol and prescription drugs stemmed, primarily, from a near-fatal car accident in 1956. He used them to numb his physical pain."
"It is commonly believed that drug addiction was responsible for Clift's many health problems and his death. In addition to lingering effects of dysentery and chronic colitis, an underactive thyroid was later revealed during the autopsy. The condition (among other things) lowers blood pressure; it could have caused Clift to appear drunk or drugged when he was sober." But due to his excessive drinking and drug use, no one noticed.

Paul Lynde didn’t get the respect he deserved. His delivery on jokes was spot on. He could take his nervous laugh and make others laugh as well. As we know with other comedians, pain can sometimes create a comedic situation. I know from my own experience, that when my parents died, the only way I could cope was through humor. I think Paul Lynde was in that same situation.
It was sad that he died young. Paul Lynde had so much to offer. I tried to watch everything he was in, and each movie or show was always great!
I feel like we put too much emphasis on a person’s sexuality. It never mattered to me if he was gay or not. There were other actors that hid their sexuality, and I think that’s a shame. If Paul Lynde were alive today, I think he would have struggled with coming out. But who knows?
Bottom line is he was great at what he did. ❤❤

I loved watching him! He probably had issues more than being gay, maybe a mental issue after so much death in his family. That can change who you are and depression can affect your health. He was a genius, he just couldn’t handle the stress that fame gave him. Probably the reason he drank so much! RIP, Paul, you were loved!

Loved him on the Hollywood Squares. It simply was not a good episode if he was not called on with one of his great lines several times. The only one I actually remember though is, he was asked - What is Gynophobia? His reply - A fear of dark places. I fell off my chair laughing!!! Edit update- After watching part of (that's all I could take) the collections of his "Zingers" here on YT, he had many more misses than hits. So much for memory. I am certain the above is true though.

He and my mom share a birthplace! As a result, my family would always make a point to see anything he was in, though I daresay it was interesting watching the more conservative members of the family try to square the fact that this guy with decidedly camp sensibilities was also somehow from Ohio (the recent trend of Ohio jokes are well-earned, believe me)
