      It’s very true, even the Suzuki could have won with a driver who knows how to reverse a trailer - as long as no one ever dared to put any weight in the horse box like, say, a horse...

    The defender has a 3500kg towing capacity.
    The Jimny has a 1300kg.
    It's not about power or agility, weight torque and strength are important, otherwise the trailer could flip the car.

    Why does virtually every motoring show assess towing performance against the clock?
    It makes good TV but no actual user cares how 'fast they can tow'.
    Why not use the high speed bowl instead of the steering pad whilst you're at Millbrook!
    Do some varying lane changes in varying severity. Assess any towing ESP function responses etc.
    But no, just ragging it round some tarmac??!

    Pulling power should have been on an incline to see which gets to the top first, also stopping and then setting off on an incline. Overtaking speed by dropping down a gear just like in the real world with a caravan/trailer. The acceleration from a stop on a flat was good to watch as it simulates pulling out from a junction, still entertaining to watch...😁

    The Land Rover is a true workhorse despite all the haters doing their best to slate it, most have probably never even sat in one let alone drive a Land Rover... I remember years ago when I used to go to the AWDC events the little Suzuki always did well on the slippery stuff, it wasn’t to be underestimated but it was shit at recovering anything heavy, that’s because it’s not built for that!

    Hmmm........This looked like a 2 horse capacity horse box, something that normally you'd want to drive in a responsible manner, especially since the centre of mass would be much higher when loaded with animals, so whizzing around corners so fast that the box is swinging sideways isn't the greatest test really is it. It might be fun, but it's no guide as to how the two vehicles would really perform under proper driving conditions.

  • @richardmeyer2258

    The idea is not about towing weight but more the fact that the Jimny is more nimble and versatile. If you want to compare the Land Rover with a vehicle for heavy towing then I suggest a comparison with a V8 Toyota Sahara or a Dodge Ram.

    • @neilnaranjo9125
      @neilnaranjo9125 Před 4 lety +1

      Mike Wilson it depends on the towing vehicles towing capacity, for example, a land rover defender like the one here has a towing capacity of 3500kg. I believe the kerb weight of a defender 90 is like 1740kg. So it’s kerb weight is well under it’s permissible towing capacity. I believe it’s “advised” that you don’t tow a trailer over 80% of your tow vehicles kerb weight but only illegal should you exceed your vehicles capacity set out by the manufacturer. On another note, the defender is a great motor and an icon, but I was lucky enough to get my mitts on a new jimny, you know what, it ain’t for towing, I just have a great time in it getting to where I want to go. Happy new year.

      Pieter Niemandt more reliable, what absolute rubbish, tell me... how many old Suzuki 4x4 do you still see driving around?

      @@PillSharks ln South Africa quite a substantial number. More in the country side. Not many were sold in the past. But l believe this model will change it all. I'm on a long waiting list currently and Suzuki has difficulty keeping up with demand. On the other hand a Land Rover comes with an oil leak 2nd hand, parts are expensive and rust on the hinges and screws are common place next to the coast. With a new Jimny comes a nice warranty so definitely the Jimny is the more reliable option.

      Pieter Niemandt well I can’t answer the ones in South Africa but I can answer the ones in Europe, there ain’t any left... all rotted away and the only ones you really ever see are the ones which have failed their MOT (yearly test) and have been converted into off roader which they are great at... the Land Rover will always outlive the Suzuki just because how it’s built... as for oil leaks, yes you get some which leak oil but I’ve worked on plenty of vehicles which leak oil, it’s a vehicle and they have oil in them!
      I’ve owned my old 92 defender for 18 years and it’s let me down once, the clutch exploded... most Suzuki’s don’t even make it to 18 years due to rust!

      @@PillSharks l know about the strict vehicle regulations in Europe. Here they are by far mre relaxed. A friend of mine served in the British military and got a Suzuki Vitara for free. As long as he took the vehicle through the paperwork. Just remember that the type of vehicles people buy in Europe are way different than the ones sold in South Africa. And on my public service salary l can almost not afford the Jimny. Not even speaking of maintaining an 8 year old Land Rover. But my dad was also a mechanic and drove old school high maintenance cars because he did the labour himself.

      @PillSharks Před 4 lety +1

      Pieter Niemandt I did my apprenticeship on Land Rovers in the 90s, I do all the maintenance myself but I still don’t see them as high maintenance vehicles, i service it and keep the underside clean and painted and it just keeps on going, 300,000 miles plus now with only one break down in the 18 years of ownership, I’d say that’s reliable?
      Parts are cheap as chips through out the world and 2nd hand parts are plentiful, you have a massive range of aftermarket parts which can be really cheap shit or high end...you choose on your budget but from what I’ve seen people tend to put the cheap parts on which don’t last and them blame it on the vehicle!
      My wife disco is 18 years old with 170,000 miles and I’ve just replaced some of the first bushes since new, wheel bearings haven’t ever been replaced, original exhaust, original starter motor, the list goes on.... obviously it’s had plenty of parts also in that time!

    Complete & utter bullshit, they're 2 completely different vehicles when it comes to towing, the Land Rover is totally in command towing 3.5t, where as the Jimny couldn't tow that horse box loaded...

      If you live and work in rural areas, like I do, it’s not an uncommon thing to see being towed by one.
      Genuine question: Why would you want to read and then pass critical comment on a towing comparison like this, if it’s not something that you’ve done, or have any need of, or believe that anyone else would has any need of?

    How about filling some water containers loading them into the horsebox and try going 55-60 mph down the motorway. The tail will wag the dog (a.k.a fish tailing) of the Jimny and end up in the armco barrier facing the wrong way. The vehicle must be as heavy if not heavier than the trailer.
    P.S. Don't think I'm bias towards the Defender just cuz I've got one as my profile pic... LOL
