02:58 very good point! As an English teacher currently in Thailand I want to expand more on education.
Students learning English in Thailand is similar to Americans learning Spanish or German in the USA. Nobody cares about it and you got to do it because the government requires it for graduation. However, people do not use the language and their day-to-day life. Back home in the u.s.a. most Americans can say hello and where's the bathroom in Spanish whereas most High School Thais struggle to understand something as simple as "How are you?" Even though they have been learning English since Kindergarten.
Thailand has one of the lowest proficiencies of English in Asia and the world. As a subject, English is not taken seriously at government schools and your classes May often be interrupted for students to participate in Thai culture activities like dancing, handicrafts, Etc. It's also not uncommon for teachers to pull students out of your class so that the students can study for their science or history exams. Being an English teacher in Thailand is basically being a glorified babysitter and as a western teacher you are considered a real teacher by the students but not by your Thai colleagues who had to go to school for a long time take hard exams and, unfortunately, get half the pay that you'll get when you come here.
Thailand is a great country to teach English if you're looking for a gap year, a pit-stop during your world tour, or somewhere to detox from Western culture. Unlike China, Japan, or Korea, you will not be reimbursed for your airfare. Unlike China Japan or Korea, you will earn between $900 to $1,000 if you are white. If you are brown or a different color your value goes down to about 25,000. I'm not sure how much that is in US dollars. In Vietnam you can earn around $2,000 and the cost of living is cheaper than Thailand but Vietnam doesn't have the beaches that we have here. In China, Japan, and Korea, you can earn more than $2,000 a month and in most cases you get reimbursed for airfare. If you just want to experience Thailand for cheap then it might be better for you to teach in East Asia where you can make a lot of money and then use that money to take a month-long vacation in Thailand or longer.
Another question I have for you is why are you wanting to teach? Is it because it's the only job westerners are allowed to do in Thailand legally?
If you truly care about changing lives do not come here because Thailand is a military dictatorship and everybody falls in line with whatever the General in Bangkok tells the country to do. You won't change the education system here and you should not suggest a better way to do something at the school. Everybody mindlessly obeys the orders of whatever Bangkok tells them to do.
The worst part about teaching here is being the only one who cares unlike the students or the Thai teachers teachers who became teachers so that they can get automatic tenure, financial security and free health care. You will not be able to pay your Bill's back home in the west and afford travel if you teach in Thailand because you only get paid for eight months out of the year. You have summer vacation from March until May and you can travel or do anything you want but you won't get paid during that time. I live my life like a poor monk so it's not a problem for me. But for you in the West who don't want to live like you're poor just to afford your bills back home and travel, think twice before coming here.

Hello do you only make 1000 a month ? Do you have time for a side hustle ? I am planning to offer personal training in a gym on my days off .

    • @kendrewreviews
      @kendrewreviews Před rokem

@@nickwatland3565 that's illegal and you could be deported! The only side hustle you are allowed is teaching English. Thailand is a land for Thai, it's not a cheap land for westerners to escape the high cost of living in their own country. Millions have had the same idea as you.
You wouldn't want to come here anyway because thousands of people are being hospitalized for the extreme Air Pollution here. I am one of them. I'm still choking on my mucus and it's hard to breathe. You can book at Thailand's air quality by going to the app "AirVisual". You should also know that you can't drink tap water in Thailand. You have to use plastic bottled water for everything.
I have no side Hustle. I only teach English. This means that I have money to live comfortably in the country when I'm not choking on air pollution but I don't have enough money to go back home or to save for my future.
If I could go back in time and do this all again I would teach and Vietnam, Taiwan, or Busan, Korea.
And those countries you make two times more money and you have the freedom to work jobs other than teaching English.
Thailand is a dead-end country and it can be very lonely. The only good thing about it is that is cheap. Ninety-nine percent of the things that influencers say is BS. They're selling your false dreams to increase their digital Nomad income.

Hey, I am thinking about your point of doing the TEFL course from the host country rather than the home country. I think this a very important suggestion, so thanks for stating it. That creates a secondary question in my mind, I am wondering if you know the answer to it... If I do the TEFL course in Thailand and start a job there, but decided to try other opportunities in the future (Vietnam, South Korea, etc) will the Thailand TEFL certificate be valid there, or does each country have its own TEFL certification requirements? In other words, is TEFL certified internationally, or regionally?

Yes! The TEFL certificate is valid for those countries as well. Many people follow the path that you have suggested and some from my own course went to countries like Korea, Vietnam and Laos to teach after completing their TEFL course from Thailand.

When I Google tefl certification I see search results about getting your certification in 9months then I searched Chiang mai tefl course that costs $1590 USD in 4 weeks. Is this the same certification or is the class in Chiang mai just for in person practice or you earn the actual tefl certificate? Also, do the schools in Chiang Mai offer help in finding or providing accommodations as part of their benefits package. I'd really like to work in Chiang mai because my father retired and he lives in Chiang mai

For NNES teachers, like I mentioned in my video that it would be a struggle to find a job but that does not mean that you cannot find a job. It takes time to find the right opportunity but they are definitely out there. Also, finding the right place to complete your TEFL certification from plays an important rule as well. hope this helps!

Unfortunately your aunt is right. I have seen numerous Job vacancies for Filipino teachers being required and the salary they are offering is between 15 - 20 thousand Thai Baht. On the other hand, there are schools that do not discriminate between nationalities but it would be hard to find opportunities there as they do not advertise positions that often.
