This review structure is a vast improvement over your previous ones. I like the frankness about the pros and cons. 😀 Great job, Bryan and Karla!

The video says the review is with Karla, and she’s probably doing the camera, but throw her scores up too!!

This game was one of my top solo games of 2023 personally. I loved the theme. I thought it was easy to learn. I understand what you said about the rule book but I don’t think that is enough to drop it all the way to a 2.

This theme is so compelling that I'm almost certain it will be done right at some point in the not too distant future. Thx guys!

Liked this format. Definitely keep this moving forward. Keep up the good work.

The theme is what sold me on this game for sure. Also, I don't really have many Worker Placement games in my collection. I will admit that this game is far from perfect. The rulebook ,for me, probably deserves a bit more credit than you gave it. The information is a pretty straight forward and concise and well grouped in sections. When I do need to go hunting for rules, it's an easy rulebook to navigate and find what you are looking for. An FAQ or Edge Case clarification page is about all that's really missing here and the integration of the expansion modules and rules could have been better. I've definitely seen far worse rulebooks. Overall, I agree with your review though. It's a solid game that I enjoy playing and have had a great time exploring and is a game that I can get extra mileage out of with the Solo Mode. To people who don't care about the theme, this game will be as exciting as managing a staffing and sales spreadsheet. But if you're the type of person who reads stuff like "Marvel Comics: The Untold Story", you'll very likely find something for you in Age of Comics: The Golden Years.

This game almost pulled me in on theme alone, but I've heard too many middling reviews. Definitely a try before I buy.

  • @robertcrist124

This was a great review format! Breaking down different aspects of a game and giving them all a score, averaging it, putting the groups and scores on screen was all good.
The white text though with the pretty much white background wasn’t difficult for me to read but it could look nicer with a graphic or something.

Hey.... i got this game and learned it from the rulebook. And man.... i HATE bad rulebooks. But this wasn't one of them. I mean it wasn't great, but 2 out of 10? Get out if here! (Said with a smile). Seriously, fun little game. Rulebook was fine.

    • @ianwilz1979
      @ianwilz1979 Před 4 měsíci +1

I think the rule book is really good and very clear. Definitely not a 2.

  • @steveg9939

Haven’t unboxed my copy yet. There are average reviews on YT but still want to try. Will learn it from a video instead of the rulebook I guess which is what I usually do anyway.
I liked the way you break down your appreciation in categories but with a simple calculation, if this game had a good-great rulebook, your score would have been a 7.5 or 8 which I think would not have adequately reflected your impression of the game given your overall appreciation. Am I correct?

Oh no!! This was an instant back for me given the theme and it all looked great. I’ve got my copy but so many games and I haven’t played it yet, but I want this game to be good, I’m so nervous now! If I recall correctly the couple who made the game were first time creators at the time (if they have done something since). They both helped develop the game and to what extent that was I can’t remember but I think it was something they did on their own. So probably why some of the points you bring up aren’t as top notch, clean, thorough like modern games we know today can be. Ooof, I’m hoping it works just enough for me I’ll keep it.

@xshadowscreamx You are probably referring to "(Marvel) Comic Hunters". That game is slated to be available to North America retail in 2025.

Game layout is better, because applicable to card games. Maybe this can include card layout too.

    Hi Bryan,
I’m Giacomo Cimini, one of the designer and publisher of the Age of Comics: The Golden Years.
Thank you for sharing your review.
We were genuinely surprised by some aspects of it, especially the ratings concerning the manual and art direction. Given the extensive effort we’ve dedicated to these areas, including making the manual available online since our Kickstarter launch, we had hoped for a more favorable outcome. Additionally, after sending you the game upon your request and then not hearing back for several months, the review certainly caught us off guard.
Beyond the manual and art direction, your comments on some of the game mechanics, like the idea tokens system, have been noted. We developed each mechanic with a dual purpose: to honor the rich era of golden age comics and to balance the game for varying numbers of players. This ensures a relaxed experience for two players and a more dynamic engagement for groups of four. We’ve prioritized ensuring that no player feels their actions-or their time-are wasted, meticulously crafting every element of the game to make each action meaningful and reflective of the strategic and creative challenges inherent in running a comic publishing company.
Our overall aim has always been to deeply respect the golden age comics theme and seamlessly integrate it into the gameplay.
We understand and respect the subjective nature of gaming experiences and are sorry that our expectations might not have fully aligned.
    Warm regards,
    Giacomo Cimini
Co-designer and publisher of Age of Comics.

While it’s unusual for a designer to reply to a review in such length, as review opinions are subjective, I do have a bit of a disagreement on your time table.
Saying you waited months for a review is a bit of a stretch as I just went back and checked. I emailed you December 19, the game arrived by January 8. Dice Tower focus for the month of January is Dice Tower Cruise and the kickstarter.
My review went up Feb 17. That’s a fair window of time frame. I do know Tom also covered it here at timestamp 7:15 in one of his 50 games in 14 minutes. czcams.com/video/g0gnCPhCfjI/video.htmlsi=dU7LzOsdBvP7D7dQ
It is unfair to expect a reviewer to give a game anything but honest feedback.
A 6.5 is not a bad review and not out of line with the current 7.5 it sits at on BGG. Thanks for the time and effort that went in to designing and promoting such a wonderful concept.

      Hi Bryan,
Thank you so much for clarifying the review timeline. Your insights have shed light on my previous misunderstandings regarding the communication timeline, primarily driven by my anticipation for your feedback.
From the start of our publishing journey, engaging in online dialogues has been pivotal in evolving our game. It's this reason I'm replying-not to critique your review, but to affirm we've listened and are taking action. Engaging on social media represents a significant opportunity for us to grow and understand our audience better.
I greatly value your honest review and understand the critical role such critiques play in refining our game. Your specific comments on the manuals have pinpointed areas needing improvement. Rest assured, we're dedicated to enhancing these aspects to better align with our players' expectations.
      Warm regards,

Might want to start with the goal of the game. What are you trying to do? Get victory points? Control area? Race towards something?

I have a very different take than Bryan on this one. I think this game deserves a much better score. I’d personally give it an 8.
The rulebook could use some improvement, but a giving it a 2 is overdramatic.
I also disagree about the map of Manhattan. I’m twelve games in and I really like the risk/reward aspect of the sales action.

Didn’t play yet but a score of 8-9/10 on the rulebook would have bumped his score close to yours. Glad to see you liked it. My copy is still waiting to be played and haven’t looked at the rulebook yet 😬

Another example of bad rulebooks. Spent the couple hundred and get a professional to help you write it! Yes you can write...we all can write but it takes skill to write one well so a person who doesn't know will understand. Myself and many others will not support a game if the rulebook is badly reviewed. Not being a douchebag on it...but the only way I can tell publishers that this is not OK is with my wallet

      Hi @raymyers700,
This is Giacomo from Lirius Games. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on the rulebook. We truly value constructive feedback as it helps us improve and enhance our games. Following reflections on comments like yours, we've not only worked on continuously updating our rulebooks based on community feedback but also commissioned an additional video explanation to make gameplay even clearer. This will be available soon.
I’d also like to invite you to check out the updated versions of our digital rulebooks in multiple languages on our website, available in both high resolution and compressed formats. This allows everyone to fully evaluate our game and its rules before making a purchase.
Your feedback is instrumental in helping us grow and improve. Thanks for being a part of our community and for your honest feedback.
      Best regards,
      Giacomo

@@liriusgames that is appreciated but if it's not in the box : forget it. I don't mean that to be harsh but this kind of thoughtfulness needs to be in creating the rulebook and not fixing it later. I definitely don't want to support this as a norm where people just fix the rulebook digitally after the fact. Our wallets are the only way to really have a voice in how much we hate bad rulebooks
