- Benjamin Bratt reveals he lived on Alcatraz Island with his mom and siblings in the '60s as part of a youth political statement by indigenous groups. Benjamin reminisces about exploring the grounds with his brother, and shares how the experience helped his mom feel like she belonged for the first time after immigrating to the U.S. from Peru.

As a Native American this story brought tears to my eyes. Accepting all tribes instead of excluding. Love that!
Amen 🙏
That occupation was ingenious. Kudos to them.
I’m from Peru my mom is Native American from south america and I have so much respect and love for Native Americans in usa
His Mom was not an immigrant. She migrated to North America (Turtle Island), as I have been reading has been going on longer than America has been around.

Agreed but try telling Trump that.
He’s so articulate, intelligent, well mannered, and handsome.
"Leave the identity to the individual." Love this.
Agree 100%!
Wow, what a cool story and he's still so handsome.
Indeed 😊
He is like fine wine 👌😌
I agree! 👍
He is gorgeous!
@@carolclark9434 yes he is
Those eyes
Dimples and that smile 😌😌😌
It is damn near criminally negligent how undervalued, under used and under appreciated BB is. He’s one of the best actors of his generation and one the best ever. Period. He has no bad performances. Cast this man! And make it something worthy of his extraordinary gifts! Please! Now! He’s a movie star, in all the positive aspects.
And still very handsome. Brown don't Crack either.
@@catherinelane9243 it’s so laughable
He’s not part of the Illuminati that’s why he’s not HUGE in terms of celebrity
@@rulerofomicronpersei8 I'm sorry, what's laughable? I think he's still a good looking man.
YES, YES, YES! He is cuter with age.
I love a man that talks about their own mother with deep respect and passion
This man just gets finer as he ages...
My father Richard M. Johnson Sr. Helped Richard Oaks and the students organize the Alcatraz occupation, he was the director of the Indian centers in L.A, and did many other amazing things during the late 60's for Native American, Indian people, God bless Richard Oaks and his daughter, my father they are in the spirit world now, it was and still is rough hard times, for Indian people but the truth will be told from Richard Jr. Heccu toi woi! (That is the way it is!) Dakota Sioux, Chumash, Chicano
I love that he came on and shared something of substance. Well done.
I like how you stated that.
I feel that often celebrities "share" things of either self-promotion or of no importance.
If you’re Native from North America, or South America, you are Native American. I’m happy the tribe embraced his mother. Tsalagi Creek sending love to our southern family.💜
Yes
Not enough people realize that north and South American Natives are all linked !!
But this is true, there were no borders back then. 😊
Because she's Peruvian. It's a known they embrace their indigenous identity.
Good point, never look it at that way on Naive American is from South America as well
Wow! She does sound like an awesome mom. An what a wonderful education and experience to give to her children.
Right
I was going to say that. 😁
Yes sheltered everyone is equal person
The way he talks about his mom😍
Love 💕 it.
My parents are also native south american, Peruvian immigrants and I am Peruvian American. I am also born and raised in the Bay Area. This makes so proud. Loving the representation!
He’s so eloquent and to top that sooooo good looking ❤️
Love this!! Benjamin is a great representation for Latin and indigenous AMERICAN individuals!!! Very well said and great story!!! 💜🙌👏
I’ve been in awe of Benjamin ever since I was a very young girl. His snapshot of his character in Blood in Blood Out has been my phone screen saver for more than 8 years. He’s so talented, fine and a political activist too!
I’m in awe of him now and I’m 72 yo, he gets my blood boiling.
I met him when he was just getting started in the industry, he got a speeding ticket going from SF to LA and I was the Traffic Clerk that handled it, he was sooo nice and so polite about everything 🤗 not all people are nice when they get a ticket but he was !
That's pretty Kool
Is he as handsome in person as he is on TV?
I was born in San Francisco and also went to Alcatraz with my mother during the time the natives took over Alcatraz. I was age 4 at the time and remember the boat ride to the island..
Omg you and him probably played together
Proud Peruvian here living in a Kenya!!! Way to go!!! ¡Bravo!
Amaziiiiing!!!!! As an African living in spain in a place called Trujillo 😂 (fíjate eh!) I love how the world just mingles. I hope all is going well for you over there. 😊
As a native San Franciscan and also half Peruvian, hearing his story is so cool!
My friend Wovoka Trudell was born on Alcatraz during that time. I think he was the first human born there. Look up the story on why they took over and how the government treated them.
I’ll look it up for sure!
Idk if it was this guy or someone else but awhile back I saw some interviews with a guy who was a kid on Alcatraz while their parents worked
He says his mum was an activist there, so it’s prob a different person who’s parent was employed on alcatraz, right?
I mean activism is work for sure, but not the same type
Anyways the guys I saw before talked about playing with different kids who lived on he island at the time, too
I would love to learn more about it, so I’ll look up more
He's aged very well.
So true, I am an immigrant and I have been working with the mental health and related issues population....I have been giving back to make this nation better for all of us.....All of us have something to offer for the good of everyone in our communities
Benjamin Bratt has been my celeb crush for 20 + years. When I saw him in Piñero I fell in love. He’s literally had my heart ever since. The depth and passion he brought to that role. Brilliant. La Mission also another favorite. I cried like a baby in that movie. Check his resume. Incredible career. Beautiful spirit and fine af. Still. Love this man. ❤️
100% agree. He looks even better as he ages!
Waaaiiiiittt he's Peruvian like meeeee!!! No wonder I have always loved Benjamin bratt's so much I would never have known what that last name that he's Peruvian omigosh at least half wow it's so inspiring that his mom worked with native tribes I love that what a different life that was for him growing up and his siblings but wasn't incredible and important perspective to educate others. God Bless you reading this too!!🌙💛✨🌟👍
Love BB. Not only a beautiful man, but a beautiful human being.
His mom was native from Peru. I wonder if she was descended from the Quechua or Incan.
He seems very grounded in his identity. I love that he recognizes and admires his mother for that gift.
Quechua. I read it somewhere else.
I used to work at Alcatraz and I can’t imagine anyone living there. I’ve experienced so many paranormal activities. But to sleep in the island must’ve been freezing.
Exactly I do not see anything good about that 😳
I took the tour one time and never had a desire to go back. I absolutely felt the spirits there! It's definitely haunted.
Maaaan , He's still good looking good God 😞😍
I LOVE that he said “Trying to put everyone into a box…leave the identifying up to the individual.” Thank you! 💜💜💜
What a cool mum! Amazing story ❤
Beautiful, heartwarming story, and eloquently told. Thanks, Benjamin!
Where are my Peruvians at? 🙋🏻♀️🇵🇪
WOW!!! What an AMAZING AWESOME MOM and childhood you had. You were able to learn valuable life lessons that far to many children don't get and they don't get the love and nurturing that y'all were BLESSED to have and experience. It makes a world of difference at how your adult life turns out so much better with so many positives in your life!!! Thanks again Kelly for sharing such an AWESOME story 💞🤗💞🙏🙏🙏🙏
It was great to see Benjamin on the show❤️👍😁 Enjoyed it a lot.
Proud to be Peruvian! 🇵🇪🇵🇪🇵🇪
The movie "Birdman of Alcatraz" is one of those old movies that I will never forget, and now this added to that memory is very special. Very cool!! ♡
I’ve always loved Benjamin Bratt. One of the greatest. Such great man.
I used to live in the neighborhood where his mom lived and I always hoped to "run into" him while her was visiting her. It never happened
Benjamin Bratt is so beautiful. 💗
Loved the message in the story!
Amazing story!! Love Benjamin Bratt even more now🥰
He as Jerry Orbach's co-stars and Briscoe's partner on L&O was my fave pairing with Orbach/Briscoe.❤️❤️
Yes!!!
He does not get the flowers he deserves. I love this man 😍😍
That’s interesting. I think Benjamin Bratt is a great actor! He still handsome with a great smile.
I love what he said. As a kid I remember someone telling me who I was, and my response was please don't do that. I will define who I am. Nice!
This actor has a lot of class and character
Such the great story
I’ve always liked this gentleman and listening to him speak I can see why✌🏾what kind words to say about your mom
Wow what a story, that’s amazing. What is Benjamin Bratt currently in, we don’t see him anymore, however still FINE❤
Poker Face on peacock. It's a murder mystery of the week type show by the same guy who did the Knives Out films.
This was one of the coolest episodes I’ve watched, I absolutely loved him Kelly and this story!
This guy is one of the smoothest guys alive!
Amazing story
BB has such an amazing and unique story and it brought me some tears. I am not Native, but as a human and as someone who is part of a group that has endured prejudice and ridicule, I feel a sense of admiration for Natives. When Benjamin talks about kids just running around playing, it reminds me of how it was for me growing up in the early and mid 70s. There were horrible things that happened, sure, but at the same time, kids were allowed to go out and play and explore and use their imaginations. I would imagine because of the group they were with, they all took care of each other - the kids wouldn't worry about someone hurting them or what allergy they had or what label they should have or what app to use - they were just KIDS.
first knew him in Miss Congeniality. wow! he has such a really cool rad mom!
DAMN , what a Handsome Man ... We need to see more of him. As a newly divorced Peruvian to a Gringo, I approve. Bendiciones Hermano, Tienes que ir a Peru
Wow what a great story
Ilove everything he’s done ❤️but I think my favorite Benjamin Bratt performance was his portrayal of Piñero, it was stunning!!!!🥰
Thats a great interview and the way he talks about his mom! 💖First time that i heard the guest than Kelly, cause she's always talking...
I love Alcatraz, hes so lucky 😍 The space where she's cooking, the rec yard, is my favorite place on earth. I sat there alone in late afternoon close to sunset and felt the best energy and couldn't figure out why, shouldn't it be sad energy??? But this explains why it wasn't. It was blissful. Maybe I was picking up on this time in the past instead.
Benjamin! I love this! I was the only person born on Alcatraz during the occupation, July 1970.
🫂
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, and I remember this. How lucky he was! That must have been awesome.
💚🙏🏼 great story and conversation, appreciated
Beautiful story!
Saw countless movies with him since 20 years...good actor
Benjamin Bratt is such an awesome story teller. Watch La Mission if you haven't 🙏
I saw that movie. Particularly seeing the reaction of his character towards his son.
A great great movie starring him and Jesse Borrego and directed by his brother!! 👏

Wow. So many amazing facts in this story.
That was absolutely fantastic!! 👏 So many lessons and history learned in less than 4 minutes!!
He's even better looking now that he's older.
I love how Americans cover all bases when asking interview questions: “That sounds really scary …… or fun.”
Nice to hear. Those.real stories
Benjamín was one of my child crushes ❤
Still such a beautiful man. 💓
My Grandfather Jim Vaughn was one of the students that took over. I wish I got to meet him but I remember my mom telling me Benjamin was on the island too.
Love his story
Kelly, love your dress. I'm so happy you ditched the wide belts. Love this soft pastel colors on you, beautiful, just lovely!
They made Native land home. ♥️
Benjamin Bratt still has his youthful good looks 💔😊
I will always love him x
