    To this day, I am filled with such sorrow and anger over the fact that not only did Laura Bailey get death threats for portraying Abby, but her son, Ronin, who was a toddler at the time, his life was also threatened. Death threats. Over an actress who played a complex character so brilliantly. It hurts my heart at what she had to endure because she's just so incredible.

    I think dev commentary is one of the most beautiful things in gaming. I wish more studios were able to do this regularly. • @bj5253

      Some interesting facts:
      Ellie is reffered as the light throughout the game and the show. Like in some instances we find her sitting and the sunlight pouring on her also some dialogues shows that she is reffered as the light you just have to read between lines. Her name meaning is also light. As the Fireflies says when you are lost in the darkness look for the light. So it refers to Ellie being the light. Like darkness is this infected world and Ellie is the cure and the only immune girl to look for also when Jesse gives them directions to go as Ellie Dina and him is about to leave to find Tommy and Joel he tells that I'll head west Dina can take south and you(Ellie) come from the east. So as the sunrises in the east it refers to as Ellie as she is the light and it can be a possibility that when Jesse says I'll head west it refers to sunset as sun sets in that direction and Jesse eventually died. Also Moose is refered to Joel in the birthday chapter Ellie sees a statue of some wolves killing a Moose and one wolf is seen biting the right leg of the Moose so it refers to Abby shooting the right leg of Joel and we know already that wlf are also known as wolves also you will see a Moose picture frame in Joel's house and when Dina and Ellie went patrol in the beginning they see a dead Moose and Dina asks how many will it take to take down a Moose to which Ellie replies more than one which is a reference to what happened with Joel as more than one were required to trap and kill him

    I'm glad Neal clarified a bit. I know a lot of people think Ellie is going back to Jackson at the end. But I never took it that way personally. I took it as shes Joel now in a way. She learned she needs to sever ties and never get close to anybody again. In her mind thats the only way to not feel the pain anymore I'm sure. She sees the world now in the dark way Joel did. So she leaves the guitar , leaving the last connection she had with Joel behind and is heading out to a new place.. Where ever that may be. I think Jackson would just be too much of a reminder of things. Tommy and Maria are not the same people she knew anymore. Jesse is gone. Dina and The Baby have just been hurt by her actions of leaving them. She couldnt go back and just live in that garage again or Joel's house.. Its bittersweet and sad really. But it came full circle. By Joel refusing to face the grief and pain of losing someone again... he inadvertently put Ellie into that position in the long run and now she has become him.

    • @RZ_SS
      @RZ_SS Před 4 měsíci +17

      But on the other hand, Joel managed to get closer to people again after he met Ellie and she gave him a reason to try. He also reconnected with his brother Tommy after their destroyed relationship, as we can see in part 2 where they're on good terms. So he really didn't cut his ties with all of them * forever *, only in the beginning, but he healed some of those things later. So Ellie in this game is slowly isolating herself from everybody (like Joel did after Sarah) and ultimately decides to go totally alone on her last "quest" to Santa Barbara, but then the epilogue with her leaving the guitar and wearing Dina's bracelet can be viewed as her attempt to begin to change that way thinking and try to heal. That doesn't mean that everything can be healed because that's impossible (you can't just pretend like nothing bad is happening) but that maybe she's going to/wants to try at some point, at least.

      Luke Skywalker became Obi Wan Kenobi (as a Jedi master)

      I think that it speaks to the lingering light of Ellie's humanity - that in spite of not knowing this very crucial information that could potentially resolve this conflict on its own - that she CHOOSES to spare Abby. I think that seeing Joel in those final moments reminded Ellie not only of who she loved and lost, but also who she doesn't want to be. Joel would've absolutely murdered Abby without hesitation in the same scenario, but Ellie's compassion spared her in the very final moments.
      I'm so relieved that the writers decided not to roll with the Ellie kills Abby ending. I feel like it truly would've undone the excellent story they were developing at its most crucial moments.

    I feel really bad for the developers and especially for Laura and Neil for how the leadup and release of this game turned out, the way they talk about it during the credits, covid isolation was in full so they couldn't celebrate together and then just this torrent of vitriol before the game even came out and almost even more afterwards... This game got its own back though, there are so many people like me who love it so much and I do hope they are able to consistently take comfort in knowing this counterbalancing positivity and love people have for what they created, not just the awards, but the people who love it, who connected with it, were emotionally moved by it. When you pour your heart and soul into something like this, you deserve to feel great about it and I hope I get to experience that when I start my career in game design.

      The intial hate was all from people yet to play the game/jumping on the band wagon of perceived politics (Which there were none).. The drama started well before the game was released.. But I've seen as times gone on, people who actually play it fall in love with it. Its why its so important to experience things yourself. But this is common with timeless pieces of art, the initial response is never all positive.

    • @The_Story_Of_Us
      @The_Story_Of_Us Před 4 měsíci +15

      @@traviscue2099 yeah, the hate actually originated in Left Behind because of Ellie being gay and came up again in Part II's E3 reveal when Ellie kisses Dina. In fact each wave of hate for the game was largely driven by bigotry, the most intense hatred during the big leaks a few months before release was the misogyny and transphobia around Abby (people saying she was trans just because she was muscular and because there was a confirmed trans character in the game which we know now to be Lev). There was even some antisemitism directed at Neil fuelled partly because the leaks drew false rumors that the Scars were christian bigots (only the latter being true of course). I think they ended up making the Torah and other stuff you find in the synagogue in game indestructible as it was very evident that people would post videos vandalizing it.
      That's a big part of the vitriol, but of course plenty was also driven by this sort of basal tribalism where the game of course was designed to make you hate Abby from the start, it's just that people never outgrew it because they refused to empathize with her. Part of that also stems from people's tribalism with Joel and Ellie against the Fireflies, lots of people just singlemindedly viewing them as the bad guys, refusing to step out of Joel's POV to examine the morality of what they were doing, because Joel never did.
      Ultimately a lot of the hate does stem from deliberate creative choices that the developers knew would cause conflicting reactions and that's why I respect it so much, they deliberately had an artistic vision and didn't care whether the it was fanservice(y) enough for the less emotionally mature audience members to get it. That's what I find really funny when asshles say it "panders to the LGBT" or whatever, because this is like the LEAST pandering game I could imagine and it was intentionally so.

    1:40:07 Such a real detail having Ellie hear the voice of Joel masking Tommy's voice when she is at one of her lowest of low moments in the story. It's also incredible to me to realize the fact that Tommy is there calling Ellie's name to help her out of that low moment and take her back to safety, much like how Joel called out to Ellie in TLOU Part 1 after Ellie had just killed David, the man who put Ellie in the most danger she had ever consciously been in. Joel was always the protector to a fault, and even though Ellie ended up hating him for it, the one voice she hears when she needs to be comforted and protected (from her own actions) the most in this part is Joel's.
    This story of revenge; how far you can take it until it destroys almost all you have, as well as redemption with Abby, knowing she has made many mistakes but choosing now to do the right thing is just as powerful now as the day (well, days) I first saw it all the way through. It is heartbreaking, brutal, filled with sorrow, and heartwarming all at the same time and I am so thankful you guys put such time, effort and emotion into making such a great and harrowing story.

    This game is a pure MASTERPIECE. Brilliantly told with so much love and detail immersed in one of the most impactful and memorable stories ever created in a video game. The devs and actors should be celebrated and appreciated for giving us so much passion in their acting and execution. It was an absolute shame what happened after release and how so many people missed the mark this game created in the video game industry. I’ve played hundreds of games in my day since I was a child and I can honestly say with absolute conviction that “The Last Of Us” both 1 & 2 is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played in my entire life. Absolutely nothing short of a classic masterpiece!

    It’s crazy to see that the cut scenes are just four hours out of a thirty-hour campaign. That’s a testament to the developers embedding memorable moments during gameplay.
    We learn about the relationships and the world through the incidental banter and notes. Halley mentions this in how Joel didn’t know Ellie was gay yet at 1:15:57, dialogue that happens outside the cutscenes. All of the open-world Seattle conversations, the talk about Bill’s town and way of life, the way Ellie and Dina underestimate the scale of the WLF, etc.
    I say invite them back! Get comfortable and give us commentary for the entire game, because there’s so much more to talk about! It’s selfish, always wanting more from them, but there are huge swathes of game I’d love to hear them cover.

Kissed me in front of our friends. Everyone seems to know except Joel. Should I tell him? I don't know. I don't know how he'd react."
      From that, you see she is afraid to tell Joel and is a bit in awe of Cat being so open and having the ability to talk to family.

      @@ChibiHoshiDragon One of my favorite conversations between Ellie and Dina comes after they go down the mudslide on their way to the television station. Ellie talks about Bill and his town. Imagine waiting 7 years to play as your most beloved character just for them to die in the first act??? That’s why there is backlash. I don’t think people are upset about Joel dying, it’s the way he died and the timing of his death. Add that to the fact that you play as his killer before he dies. If they would’ve told the same story in a way that allowed fans to enjoy his character more then they would not have been mad honestly.

I accepted it as how they told the story, because it was the best and most impactful way. Which made me appreciate it more. And it was more realistic that way. It’s no different in real life, when you lose someone unexpectedly, why should art be any different?

    • @PassThatFersacy

      @@authorryankurr Well you're saying people who gave backlash lacked "emotional intelligence". That's different than people who just don't believe it was "more realistic" or that "it was the most impactful way". I personally enjoyed the story of the sequel, but I also don't think it was the best route they could've taken to pick up the story. Does that mean I don't have emotional intelligence?? No. I just have different desires for the Last Of Us Story than you do.
      Most people miss playing as Joel. Most people wanted to see Joel die with more honor and not get beat to death by a golf club. Most people didn't like the fact the game follows many of the same tropes that show up in other forms of media lately by replacing the male protagonist with a woman(in this case 2 women). And if people have these kind of opinions about the game, that is fine. doesn't mean they are wrong or emotionally immature.

    • @authorryankurr
      @authorryankurr Před 11 dny

      @@gaia7240 Let me clarify my point about emotional intelligence in reference to TLOU2.
      When I mentioned emotional intelligence, I was referring to the capacity to understand and process the complex emotional and narrative elements the game presents. While being an action/adventure game... it explores themes of loss, revenge, and the consequences of violence in a nuanced and realistic manner. It requires players to empathize with characters, even those whose actions might initially seem unjustifiable or antagonistic. It also forces players to engage with storylines and characters that actually exist in the real world, regardless of what some ignorant basement dweller would like to engage with.
      The backlash often stems from a reluctance to engage with these themes and resistance to characters and storylines that defy traditional expectations, especially within video games, which are overwhelmingly heteronormative and violent. Unfortunately, this has led to incredibly hateful reactions from some individuals, often hiding behind anonymity online, who choose to lash out rather than try to understand the deeper narrative, choosing to hate rather than be aware and appreciate. It's not about being part of a cult or being under any influence; it's about enjoying a story that doesn't shy away from depicting the harsh realities of its world, even when those realities are uncomfortable.
      What you might be missing is this layer of complexity. The game asks players to see beyond their initial judgments and understand the motivations driving each character. This depth is what makes the narrative so impactful and why it resonates strongly with many players, myself included. No one loved that a beloved character died, does that mean that the game is trash and the actors portraying fictional characters need to be harassed? No.

    So I’m one of those people who read the leaks and went into the game fully expecting to hate it. And after getting the platinum I came away from my experience with a very negative feeling. It wasn’t specifically the story beats or the obvious subversions, but a combination of both. Even with the full context of events, the game wasn’t clicking with me. I felt it was subversive for the sake of subversion. So I moved on, disappointed but thankful that Part I was still an experience I could cherish.
    Having just completed Part II Remastered, my mind has shifted dramatically. The details in its narrative made me reevaluate my previous issues and critiques. Why did Ellie spare Abby? Why did her final memory of Joel not resonate with her prior to Santa Barbara? Or even Seattle? Because the humans mind isn’t a simple thing. It’s a struggle. Ellie knew revenge wouldn’t bring her peace. She knew she was losing everything leaving Dina. Her leaving that guitar wasn’t just her finally putting aside her misguided crusade for justice. It was her finally letting Joel go. The final shot of her leaving to me is purposefully to show that she has the potential for a fresh start. The camera could have cut at the guitar and we could have not shown Ellie walking out. Where she’ll go next, maybe we’ll see. Or not and that’s satisfactory.
    The game has its issues. No game is perfect. And I’m in no way amused at the treatment of both the cast and developers by reprehensible actors. Covid hit us all bad, we were isolate and perpetually online. Given what we now know of the effects the pandemic had on mental health, the leaks only exasperated those to vent without context. I just hope now time has past people can see it with fresh eyes and a new perspective.
    Sorry about the long comment, I needed to vent.

    41:30 I've watched a number of reactors playing the game, and almost everyone as soon as the cutscene at Joel's grave is over and they get control of Ellie, they walk back over to the grave and stand there for a moment. Almost nobody immediately follows Dina out of the cemetery.
    1:00:00 I loved the swimming scene on the way to the museum. It felt so right to have Joel teach the player the swimming mechanic by having Ellie remember a time when Joel was teaching her to swim.
    2:57:30 I disagree with Ashley here. When Ellie killed Mel, she was horrified to discover what she'd done. When Abby found out Dina was pregnant, she seemed excited to be able to inflict that much more pain upon the people who'd been killing her friends. She only stopped because Lev was there and she didn't want Lev to think bad of her. Abby actually looked disappointed that she didn't get to kill Dina in front of Ellie.
    3:25:00 Ellie sparing Abby in the final fight was so powerful. Abby got her revenge and realized that didn't fix everything and then she had to find a way to heal after that, but Ellie managed to spare Abby without ever getting her revenge. Yes, Ellie killed a lot of Abby's friends but I think it says a lot that Abby didn't find her humanity again until after getting her revenge, but Ellie managed to find hers while she had her revenge literally within her grasp and then let it go.
    I will always believe Ellie wearing Dina's bracelet when returning to the farm at the end means she's going to try to reconcile with Dina, and I hope she can.
    To me, leaving the guitar is her letting go of Joel, and everything that means. Letting go of him saving her life, letting go of not being able to reconcile with him, of losing him, of the whole revenge journey his loss drove her to... all of it. It's her closing the door on a part of her life so she can finally move forward into a new life, whatever that means.
    All I can say about the vitriol after the game's release, I think some of it was driven by grief. Ellie went on a murderous rampage because she watched someone she loved be murdered. The game put the player in her mind in that moment and they had to deal with that loss and rage as well and they went on a rampage of hatred at the people they "blamed" for killing a character they loved. I'm not excusing the behavior but I do think the game was so successful in making the player feel that loss, anger and rage that some of it spilled over into real life. As time passes,I think people will study the social impact of the game as much as the story itself.
    And why did I suddenly get all emotional when Neil said "Endure and Survive" at the end?

Abby also managed to stop herself before she got revenge for Owen and Mel. your bias is showing a lil bit.

    • @plankton2878

      a lot of the reason why people misinterpret the characters and their actions in this game is because they judge everything based off of what we as the player know and not only what the characters know. abby had zero clue about ellie’s state of mind after killing mel, and in HER mind, it’d make sense for her to assume ellie probably relished in it based off of the fact that ellie was there when she killed joel. so when abby learns dina’s pregnant, why did anyone expect her to react otherwise? rage blinds her yet she squeezes her eyes shut and braces herself before the act because deep down it’s not something she wants to do, but rather feels like she HAS to do due to the cycle of revenge.

    I wish more games had mechanics like this one. Not even the Uncharted games feel like this. In older games and newer ones, enemies seem to fall weightless to bullets and everything feels fake, soft, or too light. In TLOU2 the enemies, the bullets, the swings of a weapon all have weight to them. Ellie and Abby don’t slide across the ground when they walk. They actually stick to the ground like it was real life. It feels so realistic and still, there’s a supernatural nature to it that makes you feel like a superhero or the closest thing to playing a John Wick video game (dodging maybe faster than humanly possible, killing hundreds of enemies and never dying).

    Losing the fingers makes me curious how effective Ellie will be in combat in the third game, because losing 2 fingers is gonna massively affect your hand to hand skills, ability to hold a gun, your general grip strength, etc. Maybe we just need suspension of disbelief but it would certainly be a bit immersion breaking.

      I'm sure they can consult with people in the service who have missing pinky/ring fingers and ask them questions about it. Make it more realistic. I know it's also farfetched, but maybe Ellie could have a prosthetic, but it's the apocalypse so what are the chances of her having the skills or finding someone to help her with that.

    I am watching this on the game as I type. Just got to the part where Jesse grabs Ellie from behind covering her mouth, and was surprised to hear them say people were upset by that scene. That some people were expecting Joel, I guess because of the jacket sleeves similarity? When I first played it I was expecting Tommy.

    I always saw her leaving the guitar as she was finally able to let go of Joel and that anger. Anger towards him and anger towards Abby. That’s why she let Abby go thinking of Joel that last time, that if she can try and forgive him then she can let go of Abby. She no longer has the fingers and can’t play, but like she no longer has Joel but she still has the music and memories of him.

    I wish Tommy got a bit more respect. The way they were speaking about him at that scene was disappointing. The man literally lost everything and is crippled. Limping, his sight (his biggest asset as a sniper) all gone, on top of losing HIS BROTHER... nobody asks about him, nobody tries to protects him, nobody comforts him. Think about that. Its horrible. Tommy deserves better.

      They started in 2013/2014 right after the first game, but then Amy Henning left Naughty Dog and Uncharted 4 had an "all hands on deck" situation where the entire studio had to come together to finish the game. Originally U4 and TLoU2 were being developed at the same time. So they paused development on TLoU2 for 2 years before resuming production in 2016

I did not touch the game for two days because I genuinely grieved for Joel and Ellie in the basement scene, crazy to say for video game characters right?. Forgiveness and breaking the cycle of hate and violence is what I took from this game and is a part of my moral compass. Even named my baby girl Ellie
