- Epic Nor'easter Storm Finds! We just had our very first Nor'easter of the season and it did not disappoint! It was for sure a shell storm! Nor'easters are intense storm systems that can last days with pauses and lulls throughout the storm. These types of storm churn up the ocean and are known to wash up some amazing and unusual beach finds. In this video we find some massive beach scores - huge moon snails, hermit crabs, scallops, clams, lobster claws and more! Today we pop over to the beach (during the tail end of the storm) to checkout the ocean and the surf is crazy! Beach combing this storm was some of the best combing we've EVER experienced. Hit the beach with us - let's adventure & explore!

This is one of my favorite videos. Love those dark black/ blue moons. I would absolutely be in heaven if I walked on to the beach and found all those treasures to explore. ❤️🐚❤️🐚
That day was epic! Kim and I talk about it all the time! There were so many huge shells and urchins! I hope to experience that again sometime!!
This is one of my favorite videos. All that stuff on the beach is awesome. I don’t get tired of watching it. ❤
Hi Mary! I've gone back and watched it a few times too. All the stuff was so fun to look through. I am sure I missed ao much! Lol
That blue crab is gorgeous!
We usually don't see blue crabs north of RI, but this storm was crazy. It must have had one wild ride 😜 😳 😅
WOW WHAT A GREAT DAY. LOVE THOSE LIGHT MOON SNAILS...
Me too Nancy! They are my favorite shell!
Gorgeous shells.
I love them :)
Wow that crab is beautiful!
Yes! Beautiful and wicked feisty!
Hermit crabs everywhere
E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E 🤗😳 There were so so many! We put as many as we could back in the ocean but there were thousands.
All that driftwood is mind blowing! I would be in my element
Hi Veronica! You need to plan a trip to the Island! There is so much beach wood that washes up. I love what water and time do to rocks, shells and wood! 😍 Thanks so much for watching!!
Those shells are huge!!
This was my favorite day :)
Those dark moons are gorgeous!
Most of the blues oxidized and turned to orange, but a couple oldies stayed blue! Score!
That is crazy!!
Yep! Crazy. Still makes me smile when I think about it!

Look at all the driftwood. My bag would be way to heavy to carry with all those moons and driftwood pieces.
Thanks for taking me with you.
Hi Mattie! Yes, we get a good amount of beach wood here! I collected a couple pieces this last time at the beach - they were too good to resists! Thanks so much for watching!
Wow! What a day to go shelling! Hugs from Virginia!
Hi Karleen! Hugs from PI! Thanks for always tuning in! New video coming soon!!
Amazing!
Hi Lorna! Thanks for watching my channel! :) It was amazing for sure! I am excited for more winter storms!
I've never seen so many dead crabs or so many live hermit crabs! Very nice finds!
Hi Kimberly! Me either! It was definitely a first for me and an epic day! Illoking forward to the next storm!
Wow! This video was amazing! I’ve never seen that many shells!
You: gently putting live animals in shells back into the surf.
Me: just flinging it back as far away as i can from where I'm standing, lol
Lol - thank you so much for watching ❤ I feel so bad when I accidentally scare the little creatures 🤣🤗 especially the little hermits 🌊🐚✌

That beach was awesome! All those critters and those moon snails were crazy! Those scallops were gorgeous too - epic day at the beach! Do the hermit crabs up there have a tough time finding shells?
Hi there! Thank you for watching! It was certainly an epic day at the beach and it left me excited for the next storm! :) I haven't heard of any shell shortages up here and I always see an abundance of vacant whorl shells. I know in Thailand there is a shortage and some crabs are forced to use trash - glass and plastic bottles and debris. This is the first time I've ever seen hermit crabs of this size on our beaches. Usually we have the very small ones that are about the size of a nickel. These were about the size of a baseball - amazing! Do you have any shell shortage issues in Florida?
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin I've seen the plight of those hermit crabs in Thailand and the kind people that leave containers for them to use. I wouldn't dare take a shell from that part of the world! And as far as I know there is no shortage of shells here! You were so lucky to hit that beach when you did and it was so interesting to see what washed up!
@@SWFBeachLife agreed 100% ✌🌊❤ We also found a wallet that day with a social security card in a plastic sleeve in it. We mailed it in the the social security office 🙌 Crazy things wash up.
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin Wow! I’ve managed to find goggles and garbage, but never any kind of ID. That is crazy!
Happy Birthday Nancy! 🎉
I can relate!! How awesome!!
Nice haul !
It was one of my most favorite shelling days ever!!!
Great vid, fun stuff!
Hey Ted Ted! So much fun and so many shells! Thank you so much for tuning in and watching my channel! ❤✌🌊
Thanks for all the information.
Hey Barbara! Thank you sommuch for tuning into my channel! Much appreciated new friend! 🌊✌❤
I am STUNNED at all those gorgeous blue snail shells!!!! And the hermits are so cute! Someday I need to drive up there.
Hey Carrie! Yessssss! It was an epic beach day! I live for winter storms! Yes...it's definitely worth a visit. There is 11 miles of coastline to explore in the refuge. If you ever come up I can give you some secret beach locations to find some good loot 😉 Thank for watching!
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin I will remember that! I'm a teacher, (science, of course!) so maybe in the summer one of these days I'll hit you up for that info! Thanks!
@@heycarrieann Awesome! Yes! Let me know! And wow...science teacher! Love it! I will hit you up when I get stumped on some beach science! I have so many questions and I am curious about everything 🤔 🙃
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin Deal! No guarantees, but I will do my best!
Aw, he waved goodbye to you!
Thanks for watching! Yes! He was in a rush... he was like "I gotta' go do some ocean-y things!" 😂
Beachcombing….. a most rewarding pastime ! I spent two complete summers of my life working at Camp Sea Haven back in the late 60’s ! I also enjoyed walking along the beach there during my free hours and it inspired me to do the same for years afterwards ! Have you been lucky enough to find any sea glass in your beach combing ? Thanks for you postings …. Very nicely done !
Hi Bruce! You are the 2nd person I've me here that has worked at Camp Sea Haven! I never knew it existed and I loved hearing all kinds of stories about it! Were you a shell collector back then? I am wondering if you have ever found a New England Neptune when you were here? Also, yes...I do come across sea glass here every now and again. It's not something I fond often, but when I do it's a big treat! Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate you coming along on my adventures!
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin Sorry to be late getting back to your reply ….. but since it is Christmas Eve , let me first wish you a very Merry Christmas 🎄 ! I am presently visiting my brother and sister in the Georgetown vicinity For a few days ! I was never a shell 🐚 collector but I have always and still do enjoy beachcombing just to see the amazing stuff that washes up on beaches between tides ! I spend four months every summer living on a small island in Casco Bay , Maine and have for over50 yrs ! The beaches there are mixed between Sandy types and rocky / pebble types so , not many interesting shells but an amazing variety of rocks / pebbles and…. Of course , my fav stuff …. Sea glass ! I have filled many small display bottles with mixes of different colours and shapes of sea glass ! My two summers as a councillor at the camp gave me a deep appreciation of the waves , beach and tidal vagaries of this area . At that time , beach buggies were allowed to drive on the sand for the fishermen so …. There would always be activity ! As a matter of fact ….I caught my first striper from the beach right in front of the Camp one afternoon ! The camp cook made a nice dinner for everyone for that evening ! Lol
More to come ….
When we go shelling down here in St Petersburg Florida, we take plastic bags with us to also pick up garbage and keep the beaches clean.
I love this! We bring 5 gallon buckets and fill them! Sometimes it gets super heavy to carry...there's a lot of trash especially after storms. Plastics mostly. Some beaches have cool baskets like shopping baskets at the entrance for people to take and fill. ❤ Thank you sonmuch for watching...and keeping the ocean and beaches clean!
I collected with you by my eyes 👀
Hahaha - I absolutely love this comment 😍 Meet me on the beach next week for more collecting! 👀 Thanks for watching!
That was EPIC shelling! Thank you for sharing.
It was a great day! Thanks for tuning in! Going back this week to a couple different locations to check things out! Stay tuned ✌🌊❤🙌
🤩🤩🤩💖💖
Thank you so much for watching ❤✌🌊
I subscribed! Thank you for sharing
Awesome! Thank you so much and thanks for watching! I have a new video coming this week 🌊✌❤
That was AMAZING! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for watching! Did you see all those surf clams? 😍 lolol
This is absolutely unbelievable - thank you for sharing!
So glad you liked it! There are plenty of winter storms coming so stay tuned! Trudging through the snow always pays off with big finds! Thanks for watching!
Hey! I just watched your video on PI! Great content! That scallop shell! ✌🌊🐚
In all myshelling, I have never found a moon snail shell, holy crap, can't wait to go here!!! If a mollusk is open and doesn't close when you touch it, the little guy, most likely isn't viable 😔
Hi PJ! Yes...the Moon Snail shells are so much fun to find. I found a very cool dark one this past weekend (it will be in my next video) 😍 Also, yes...but with that being said, I have had moon snails thatvI thought were expired, but when I brought them back to the water and submerged them, they start to move and retract. I always error on the side of caution and place them back in when I see them. Especially after huge storms - everything on the beach is moving in slow motion after large nor' eastern. Most likely shocked or exhausted from the extreme turbulence. Thank you so much for tuning in to my channel!!
Gorgeous finds!!
Thank you! The surf clams were huge! Grabbed a few 😉
Absolutely amazing. I stopped by Plum Island on my way south on Thursday right after the storm passed and the beach (from lots 5,6 and 7) was absolutely devoid of any shells - the storm had wiped it clean. It appears that it took a few days for the shells to actually wash up and stay on the beach. I'm quite jealous about the scallops that you found. Thanks for sharing. Bob
That's a total bummer. It's happened to me before though - you never know if it's going to be a dud or going to be epic. Good thing is, there is always another storm...especially in New England! Good luck on your next search! Keep shelling!
you need wellies to keep your feet dry, including footwarmers and toe warmers. How do you not get a cold? Lost urchin, 13:11 on the left at the tip of the driftwood. Then you stepped over it, augh! Yeah! you found it!
Hi Chris! 👋 Thanks so much for watching! Yes...I have heard those are good boots! I may check them out, but I tried rubber boots once and I went too deep...they filled up with water 🤣 YES! You saw that urchin too! 🤣 I saw it when I was editing the video and I was like how the heck did I miss that!? 😁 in my defense, there was a lot of distractions on the beach that day 🤣 I'm hoping for another storm like that soon!
Yaaay IV been waiting on this video!!!
It was epic! There was so much that washed up! I'm heading back this week - I'll be sure to bring my camera so that you can come too 😉 Thanks for tuning in friend!
We had a crazy wind storm here right before Halloween and it washed up some good shells. I have a little baggie of Pawleys island shells and a large fighting conch and some olives for you if you would like them :)
@@ravenweaver6087 That is so super nice of you, but my shell collection has grown so much that I started an Etsy page to reduce it a bit! 😮 🤣 Occupational hazzard of an obsessive sheller! So kind of you! The world needs more people like us sharing shells! ❤✌ Thank you so much!
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin haha yeah I'm so loaded up with what I find in the beaches here I give em away l the time. Still have yet to find any sand dollars or giant moon snails tho haha
@@ravenweaver6087 Yes! And still when I'm at the beach I'm like "no more...wait...one more!"🤣 Where are you located again?
Wow that's amazing on all the huge moonsnails and sea urchin never found a full just pieces maybe my October trip should be there and not Florida 🙈🙊 so I did notice your footwear girl you need some waterproof shoes specially in the cold your flip flops and gym shoes don't help I would be freezing ❄️
Hahaha - yes..I do need some good boots! I plan to buy some soon! Thank you so much for watching!
New subscriber, wooo I would like to have that lobster claw in my collection. I would like to be on that beach, healthy envy 😉😉
Thank you so much for subscribing! Can you imagine how big that lobster must have been!? I have never seen a claw that size! Thank you so much for watching new friend!! 🌊❤✌
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin And you kept the clamp?
@@Fannysadventures nopie...it was full of meat...it would have been very smelly 😬🤢
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin If I had taken it, I have a large natural collection, and if we had been closer, I would have told you to send it to me hehehe
@@Fannysadventures If I find another one I will save it for you!
This is one of the reasons I’m vegan. When you meet all the sea creatures you respect their lives more.
Yes...oh my goodness, we were trying to get as many as possible back into the ocean, they just kept washing up. I am confident we're were able to save a good amount though! Especially rock crabs and hermits 🌊❤☺ Thank you for watching friend!
Hi Jamie
How do you dry all your shoes? That would drive me crazy
Your shells are beautiful and so is the beach
❤from Ohio
I live around the corner so it only drives me nuts for a few minutes lol. I wash them and toss them in the dryer or if I have time, I let them air dry 😀
Wow!! Can’t believe the size of the snails. They were huge!!
I noticed garbage on the beach, do you collect the garbage to help clean the beach and make sure it doesn’t go back in the water?
They are so massive! Also, yes...we take 5 gallon buckets with us sometimes - especially when there is a massive storm. Plum Island is great because we have volunteers after big storms and we all collect trash and help keep the beaches clean!
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin I knew you would and those storms do bring about items that have been buried under the sand. I often wonder whatever happened to the debris from that Japanese 2011 tsunami? We did get some things on Vancouver’s Island from it. Not as much as they thought though. That was crazy how big it was (The debris.). My hubby said it was the size of an island and ships had to go around it.
Thanks for a great video. You poor girls looked frozen to the bone. Take care.
Do you randomly pick up trash along with the shells from the beach? As every little bit helps, and you might inspire others.
Hi Judy!
Thanks for watching! Yes! I also put little notes in my videos every now and again to remind people as well. When I do, I use a 5 gallon bucket and fill it while shelling. Occasionally I just go out specifically to collect trash - especially after big storms when a lot washes up. Newbury Ma has a lot of great volunteers that help clean up after storms too. There are some tips I share too as the buckets can get very heavy. One thing I learned (pro tip) is to bring a razor knife. A lot of times the plastic bottles fill with sand. If you slice the bottles and empty the sand, your bucket is much lighter to carry 😉✌🌊❤
You have beautiful skin, absolutely radiant. 😊
Hi Justine! Thank you so much for watching! And thanks for the compliment ☺ It must be all that salty air and sunshine 🌞🌊✌❤
Did you pick up a lot of shark eyes if so will you sell some of them?
It is like a candy store for shellers!!!
There were soooo many. It was an amazing sight! I've never seen it like that before. I have some that I'm going to post in my Etsy shop tomorrow and I have some that I've collected over the years. Check my shop this week - PlumIslandSeaCabin on Etsy. You can also message me on Etsy and let me know if there is a specific size or color you are looking for. Thanks a bunch for watching!
Nice finds! I live in S. Florida and sometimes after storms the beach is covered with goodies. Not alot of live shells though. More common on West coast. Are there any efforts to clean up the beach trash after storms?
Yes - storms are the best for beach loot and goodies! I am looking forward to visiting some Florida beaches this winter!
The wildlife refuge on Plum Island is part of 11 miles of coastline and split between 4 towns - Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley and Ipswich. I was just on the town social media pages and they are organizing clean ups. There are so many wonderful people in the surrounding towns that care about the ocean and environment - we all pitch in. In addition, I and other people I know take 5 gallon buckets with us to the beach every now again and pick up plastic and trash. Every little bit helps! The town DPW is amazing too! So many helpers! Thank you so much for watching my videos 🌊✌❤
You need a pair of boots!!
I would still end up getting soaked by the end of the day 🙃 🤣
Sorry, I didn’t understand what your Etsy page was.
Hi Leticia! It's like a little online shop where I sell and ship some of my beach finds and other beach art and things made on Plum Island :) Here is a link so you van check it out if you want 😀 👉 www.etsy.com/shop/plumislandseacabin
Thanks so much for coming along on all my beach adventures!!
I hope you’re picking up the trash when you’re there.
No worriea there! We have dedicated days we go with 5 gallon buckets. We grab as much as we can too while we film 🥰
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin awesome! Sorry to assume, I’m just new to your channel and haven’t heard you talk about it before. You picked up a bunch of shells but then you didn’t film you picking up the trash I saw on the beach.
This is Lisa from Kentucky. Do you not take an extra bag for trash?
We usually bring a 5 gallon bucket to fill as there generally isn't a lot of trash. On this particular day there was way more than usual due to the storm. We have a great community here - everyone gets together after storms like this for clean up ✌️🌊❤️
There was so much trash! I'd have picked up more junk than shells!
We bring 5 gallon buckets sometimes and collect trash with shells. Plum Island is awesome because after storms we have volunteers that meet up on the beach and collect trash. It's awesome to see our community come together ❤️
Disturbing to see so much plastic debris
Agreed. It's usually like that after storms. We bring 5 gallon buckets to collect as much as we can. It gets so heavy sometimes. The towns near us have groups that get together and do clean ups. I love it ❤🌊
