I do hyper realistic animals. I have been told they feel alive. What I do is all the left brain measuring and accuracy and trying to copy the reference. I do it in sections one by one systematically. I do this for three or four layers. Then I toss the reference never to look at it again, go into a dreamlike right brain state and go randomly from one part of the painting to another and feel like the animal I am painting. I imagine the smell and the sound of the animal. It comes alive. I feel the combination of both ways of painting works best.
❤
That's called autism. I think I have it too. 😮
Where can I see your works....
@@Karina-er7mxI have it and it sounds exactly like me so…
Guys… can we please do away with the “creative right brain” and analytic left brain myth that was DEBUNKED 10 years ago in 2013. The brain is much more complicated than that and yes there are regions of the brain found correlating to capacities like language (even that is both sides), emotional states, etc but the whole RIGHT vs Left is simplistic and a limiting belief system. It actually makes people think they are predominantly one OR the other and that’s ridiculous.
Take an afternoon and read some science literature published in the last 10 years about this and I think you will be pleasantly surprised ❤
Wow. I am a teacher and what you said was insulting. I teach creative thinking and how to see like an artist in order to understand art and communicate original ideas and that their thoughts and ideas matter. I also believe that one should learn to walk before they run, learn history to understand if their ideas have been tried before and what the outcome was at the time and how things have changed since then. There is discipline and structure to create a variety of art. I teach them the language of art and what they say to the world is up to them. You have some good ideas to share, but don't blame today's teachers. Students are expected to know more and yet many have little to no support system outside of school. Our struggle is more than you may understand. I teach until exhausted. Then I teach more. I do make a difference.
There are some things in life that are easier to teach than to do. You have the knowledge but not the required talent to be able to do it yourself & his comments about golf are a perfect example. Again, assuming you have the knowledge of the subject, it's easier to teach than do. I play golf but not well but I know enough about the specifics of the game to be able to teach it but unfortunately, the same doesn't apply to art.
I personally believe that they were speaking about the majority of art teachers. As a kid, I always looked forward to art class but never really learned how to use my right brain or express myself through art, even though I was very artistic. Class was all about memorization instead of intuition. But I will admit that having those teachers plus lots of family members who are artists, has given me a firm foundation to build to where I am now.
Everyone gets so insulted all the time = a failure of our current culture
this information is so helpful. This channel is better than any google search for beginner artist tips. I hope you guys continue to post videos like these ❤
We're so glad you found this helpful! We'll be posting new videos every Tuesday and Friday. You'll definitely want to see our video on Tuesday next week, it'll be all about "Masters Before Us" an art history show.
I go down to my studio to paint at 8 a.m. and wake up at 5 p.m. Lost in time without the notion how it went by, lost in the painting.
Being a left brained person but also left handed, I have been switching back and forth my entire life. Started painting very interesting creations in my 60’s! So don’t wait ;)
I'm a new listener and I love the wealth of knowledge that is shared here! As a professional artist for over 20 years, these kinds of discussions are so important to not just hear, but also, to PASS ON to newer artists who don't have the confidence they need to endure. Good stuff, and thank you for taking the time to post this content.
Thank you so much! We're so glad that you found us, hopefully you'll continue to love the content we're putting out and it'll serve you in your career and other newer artists just starting out.
This has been a wonderful and encouraging podcast! I wish I met you in person while you were still living in AZ! I love hearing that you are enjoying learning to ride horses! Horses were my “therapy” along with art while growing up in an abusive and neglectful home. I continued on to purchase y own ranch in Colorado while raising my three daughters alone. Horses were my first and constant inspiration for my art. I am 57 now and still enjoy going to the stables to visit my daughters horses. My hope is to have consistent sales. My 40 year history as a professional artist has been feast or famine in terms of sales…either big sales of bronze sculptures and paintings or nothing for even years. I never could understand why.
When I'm painting, I use both my analytical and free parts of my being (left and right brain). I get lost for hours in painting, especially the details. I forget everything and everyone around me. I forget to eat and drink. I wake up in the middle of the night needing to get things down on paper. In September 2022 I used watercolor for the first time and have since painted at least 150 paintings. ( Started on my dad's death anniversary. ) Thank you for sharing your personal perspectives with us.
I must also say that I've noticed shades of color and shadow in most things all of my conscious life since about three years old, but had never really put that into practice before. I so wish I had taken lessons at some point in my life. At 57 I say it's never to late to begin. So here I am to learn... LoL
Discovering that overcoming blocks is not just an obstacle but regarding it as a reassessment personal progression to work through is such an enlightenment.
Yeah it actually is a skill that you can develop over time!🔥
These discussions are so fulfilling to me. I thought for years that something was wrong with me. Now I understand that there's a common thread with all true artists
gosh...you never can tell where the great lessons of life will come from...!
i enjoy all your videos but this one was FULL of love and wisdom and just plain goodness.
thank you for walking your talk of that generosity you spoke of.
thank you for speaking so honestly and unafraid to be truthful.
thank you for the abundance of clarity.
with sincere appreciation💖🙏😃
Thank you so much for posting this video. I am starting a new phase of my life. My partner and I are moving to Scotland in December. It's freeing up time where I can concentrate on becoming the artist I was meant to be. Following my heart, it's what I have always wanted to do deep down.
You are right if you are always told to think with the left brain use loose your creativity. That is what happened to me.
I am going to be 50 next year. I spent 49 years trying to live as a left side. Looking forward to returning to my right sider brain.
So happy that you posted this. Best wishes to you all. Debz
Best of luck! Sounds exciting! ❤
Go for it! I recently turned 51 and moved location and starting a new life and about to start their Mastery Program and dedicate this year to my new art journey also 😊 are you planning to join their mastery course?
How wonderful to hear Elli speaking to us without using the 'umm' word constantly. I can actually relax and hear what she is expressing. Thank you Elli.
Such an amazing podcast - all this advice can be applied to all aspects of life. You guys are the best and I appreciate you all!
This was so amazing and very helpful. I absolutely loved listening to this conversation and felt like I could relate to a lot of it.
I never experienced an artist block. My problem is that everything inspires me, and I have so many ideas and things I would like to try but not enough time to achieve it all.
With me it's not exactly artist's block. I just need some time to recuperate after an intense painting spree. Get my head cleared out and just deconnect. I do gardening and cooking and a bit of socializing.
thank you guys so much, iv been in an art funk for quit a while now, it all started after I got into the NFT market and sold a bunch of my art, I felt praised. it lasted 3 months only for the market to slow down and my art immediately stopped selling. the conversation you guys had helped me realize so much about how I should be looking at my art. hopefully I can tackle this artist block a lot better
That is so awesome to hear that this video helped you change your mindset!! Hopefully you’ll pull yourself outta that funk and into abundance! We know you can do it!
Wow. This was honestly one of my FAVORITE episodes ever. Thank you so much for your generosity & truth-speaking 💕
You all put out so much rich, informative content. I really appreciate this episode ❤
A mouthful of information!🥰
Loved it because I understand what I do more and that I must push through when blocked! Being generous with others, I'm fine but with myself...need ti work on...Thanks!
I absolutely love this discussion.
This video is just amazing. Thank you guys! I translate every single frase of you in my language to have the text version always with me, it takes hours but i'm so happy to finally find real answers with specific words to many of my questions. I hope you guys continue to illuminate the artworld...
Thank you I really enjoyed this discussion. You are all so articulate it’s a joy to listen to you. Can’t wait to start Mastery in just over a week. I’ve been preparing my spare bedroom as my studio space. So excited!
Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you again! Sorry, I am french....that's the only thing I can say right now!! Lol! Very helpful....very anxious to be part of the Mastery Art Program! xxx
Just been watching this channel for a couple of months and have gained so much insight.. Thank you so much 🙌❤🦋
Very interesting work here. They seem to have an ability to raise insightful concepts on artwork and life in general at the same time. They speak of their own personal experiences in a genuine way, while showing that many people have similar thoughts - whether negative and destructive, or positive and inspiring.
There is ALWAYS risk in art, and these talks are no different - as to how people may take what is said, or may comment in the moment. What these people here seem to do then is to just keep moving forward. And that, in and of itself, is a vehicle. Their own vehicle.
I've listened to a couple of your videos this morning and have found them to be excellent overall. I have a different perspective regarding artist's block however. As a graphic designer and illustrator I"m perhaps in a slightly different vein creatively (although I don't see it that way), but I learned a long time ago to trust my subconscious thoughts. If I'm really struggling with a project I leave it for a day or two and work on something else (this is all the more important when working on a freelance project and charging a client by the hour, for instance-one owes them economical restraint as one consideration). This has resulted in clear solutions on many occasions. I disagree that one has to push themselves through the issue-I can't afford that kind of pain with so many deadlines-both external and internal, and I choose not to damage my personal process in this way. To push through and force myself denies my developed skills and talents, and seems completely counter to being in the zone, which I bet we all agree is a precious thing.
There were so many great pieces of advice in this video!!! Thank you for helping me see how far I've grown already and inspiring further growth. ❤❤❤
The ability to vacillate from right brain to left brain is definitely a practiced skill; understanding skillful composition takes patience.
Love idea of 100 painting challenge. I am gonna do it this week!! Thanks.
That's so awesome, we can't wait for you to try it. Make sure to tag us on Art Social when you do it and share your paintings with other artists here: www.artsocial.com
And if you want some extra help, check out this video we have about overcoming creative block, where Dimitra and Jake demonstrate how to do the 100 painting challenge. czcams.com/video/97gxqNb8M_Q/video.html
Let us know if you have any questions.
Would this be on paper in a book? Would I need to gesso the pages first? I love this idea as I've just discovered you, and I'm also doing a painting (yes, new style) and am blocked. I guess acrylic or markers would be the way to go?
This reminds me of an event I heard of, I can’t remember if it was a windows computer or iPad Pro or something, but someone had like a projector plugged in or something, and was drawing on the device. All these tech geniuses who built it were blown away by what can be created by a creative individual on a device that they just know the technical side of.❤
You guys are amazing! You Just made my day!! been the whole day listening to your videos and you are talking about all the things I suffer from and what I am looking to! Thank you for all the advices God bless you 🙏🏻
Amazing artist revelations, thank you. 🙏💐
Very helpful video. Could I add one more thing? You can avoid or overcome artist block by just constantly and continuosly feeling amazed and in awe of the greatest artist ever, the original artist, the Creator. After all, everything we can paint is a reflection of the perfection He has already painted and created, whether plant, animal or human. Add to that, that He has gifted you with the eye to see the beauty He has created and to reflect it back through your art and appreciate that and you will never feel artist block. I am not a professional artist, I am self-taught but I feel excited and in awe every time I paint that I can actually paint, that I can see the beauty of a cat's design or the intricacy of the petals of a rose or the delicate contours of a baby's face which enables me to look inside and retrieve that desire to paint in awe and amazement. Be amazed by the endless beauty in nature.
Thank you! I found a lot of useful info in this video🙏🏻 I’m abstract artist although I think that one painting style does not fit all. Realism is a different style of painting that is also valuable. Some people want to see that specific art rather than loose and impressionistic ones. It is great to have variety of art styles.
This video is so thought-provoking, and packed with inspiration. Thank you
this channel is so great. All the topics missing in school but so important
Im so glad i was led to your broadcast channel through your email page i follow... You guys are amazing!!! Thank you so much for sharing ❤ i sink in your information so much❤ thank you
You're the best! We're glad you're here :)
Tremendous explanations guys @ about 7:00 to 10:18 -this is amazingly well-described here🙏🏻👍🏻🥰
Thanks guys. I found this podcast super helpful and informative! Notes made. :)
Thank you so much! I do loved this video. very important info and ethical messages. Great!
I always slip into my left brain while I'm painting 😅 great point!
Right brain seeing is SO essential to creating excellent art!
Thank you for sharing all those tips, I love watching your videos!! Who is the artist Elli mentioned?
You definitely need to use both sides. Part of painting is problem solving.
Thank you for being so generous!❤
Thank you for being a part of the community!
It’s so nice to hear artist explain the heart n mind emotions feelings / THE ZONE
Wow, I am learning a lot here, thank you guys for sharing your insights...
Thank you......amazingly helpful to me.........I am really greatful for this video.....xx
Thanks for all the wonderful work!
Glad you enjoy it!
Amazing talk ! So helpful ❤
We're so glad that it was helpful for you! Which part was your favorite?
Thank you for the insight!
Reminds me of: When does play stop becoming fun? When it becomes work🥺
32:24 The basketball player is Muggsy Bogues! He was one of my favorite players. I loved watching him play.
What she's describing is a mixture of literal right-brain-specialization skills (see: Roger Sperry) and "being in the zone" (see: Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi) in which Prefrontal Cortex, Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Medial Prefrontal Cortex and Amygdala are less active (diminished self-consciousness, sense of time, attention and cognitive control, and increased calm and freedom from distractions), and Striatum is more active (increased feeling of reward, motivation, goal-directed behavior)
Muggsy Bogues is the NBA point guard you are speaking of. Definitely a legend.
Nice conversation. Thanks.
Terrific Video.😁💜💟💜
amazing video😍
I really believe that the artist Instinct were born with. Course like anything else practice makes perfect. However it is my experience at painting and teaching are two different things! It is definitely a challenge to paint and teach at the same time. For my vocabulary it's time for what I do with a brush LOL
This was sooo wonderful!!! I've discovered your channel not a long time ago . You guys are so helpful and inspiring ❤❤❤ I truly love that 😃
FANTASTIC!!!
I think some painters have a very clear/planned idea about what they want to achieve and don't want accidents, happy or not, to get in the way and have to clean up.
It's just a different approach. I guess it just comes down to style/process. Working an inch at a time is extreme. I personally work in levels background, midground, foreground and I use a limited palette. If the paintings off, I correct with glazes. Rarely the case.
I found this channel just a few days ago and have really gained a lot of wisdom. I am only part way through this particular video but as they were discussing what is meant by the right brain a TED talk I watched years ago popped in my head and I have to share it. My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor. It is an amazing story and she describes what the feeling of being in her right brain felt like during her experiencing an actual stroke. It is an amazing video. Now to watch the rest of this video.
We love that TED Talk! *psssst* It's something our Mastery Program students have to watch. 🤫
@@milanartapp Excellent. Her going between the left brain and then the right brain was a very powerful example of the differences between them.
Easy way to tell left from right: Your left us where the thumb sits on the right, and right is where the thumb is on the left
Another Awsome interesting conversation.
the instructions and motivational information in this video is really amazing. If milan art institute writes a book with this kind of content, I would definitely buy it to read and reread to remind myself of why I paint on days when I have a block or when I feel bad and unmotivated
I'm a dominant right brain person. It's interesting how my art is helping me tap back into the left side of my brain! I'm getting into geometry and mathematical forms and ratios and sequences like the Fibonacci. Some of my right brain ideas of beauty and form are requiring me to think in these other universal and naturally scientific forms. it is more in the right brain abstract though.. But I'm actually admiring math! Who woulda thunk it?
Love the Right brain idea ...
Good talk..Muggsy bogues..
very nice and funny thank you 💖
Your program sounds great, but I was born a right side of the brain artist. I have always seen things a little differently than most people.
❤❤❤
This was such a fun podcast to record! What were your favorite moments from this podcast?

Isn’t it strange that I know exactly when my right brain is switched on, it feels like an out of body experience !
I know that I'm not particularly good, or at least I know where I am at and why. I only have a certain amount of time/energy to devote and I am fine with that. So it annoys me when sometimes a person (not another artist) thinks I am being falsely self effacing or fishing for compliments/reassurance when I say matter of factly/unemotionally that I am not particularly good. I am learning to just say thanks and move on.
Yeah it's important to recognize where the compliment is coming from and the heart behind it.
21:41 i am self taught artist and now am attending studio for some formal skills training, but i noticed that it doesn't help me with my artist block at all. I am just improving technical skill l, that surely will be handy later, vut i still can't paint outside studio. Psychological block that i am working with psychologist
Most successful artists have some knowledge of business. It’s so important.
With all due respect, knowing the business aspect has nothing to do with the quality of your work with your tools or having the vision required to create. Much like photography. How to see can't be taught in a classroom. The process is required learning but not the ability to see as the best photographers do. There truly are people who were born with a natural talent for what they want to pursue or some just don't recognize the talent they were born with. I was born to be a musician & was for most of my life without formal training. It wasn't a great accomplishment because I never really had to learn it. I could just do it without thinking about it. But, even natural talent has to be developed over time to make the most of it or it becomes just a hobby. What's worse is having natural talent but not using it because it's not important to you. That's not a fault but just where your life leads you.
We are all two hemishpered. Just schooling had us working out on one side mostly. Imagine a weightlifter only working on one side of the body. There'd be spinal problems above the strange physique. Same goes for the mental muscles.
26:15 Art imitates Life👍🏾🎨🥂
...very interesting, exciting, lively exchange... but... if one has the curiosity to find this charming trio's work....... quite embarrassing to say... it's frightfully tacky... and they obviously think it's not...
I am 60 years old and paint since over 20 years,as an autodidact, i would like to become a more better and sellable artist, do you think its still yet possible ?
Even not artist but your good in painting do you think no question about that issue, thanks

My right brain is on all the time and I find it difficult to do the daily things others find easy or normal.
So I have all this talent but can’t function to market myself
Just thinking about how do I go about posting something Leaves me with dread.
I somehow wing it through daily life
But not thriving as I know I could be
I am trying to goigle the artist that Elli referred to in the section on painting in layers. Is anyone able to provide the spelling of his name?

I work full time in the medical field and my job is exhausting. I’m on the waiting list for the master program and I’ve been having a lot of doubts since I signed up about whether I can do it or not, due to constantly being exhausted. I have, however made a decision to follow my heart and purpose and transition to full time artist as soon as possible. I’ve been working on acquiring more skills one day at a time, more consistently lately,. I try to create art everyday as much as possible. I will try the 100 paintings challenge even if I can’t get it done in three days! 😊 Do you have advise for artists that are between two worlds, trying to transition 100% to becoming a professional artist?

liked it, but too many ads
I’m a photographer but I also paint my photos….
I don't believe that anyone can be an artist even if you go to school to study it. You might get better, but I believe true artists were born with the ability but refined it with practice and study. Do we all have beautiful voices and can sing beautifully, even if we study and practice?
Ditto!
I had a stroke in my right brain..it's been hard to startup art again l just don't know how to get my art back..l want to paint every day but it just don't happen
I hope you try every day to create. You might make your right hemisphere come alive! It's worth a shot
@@karylm23 thank you so much l will.
I had a mild left brain stroke at the spot where the eye and brain coordinate. Haven't been able to paint for 3 months. Colors make no sense to me.
YOU MUST ALWAYS PAINT NO MATTER WHAT THAT LITTLE VOICE SAYS🎉
I can not talk and paint at the same time. It's one or the other. Also, my right brain works much better than my left. I do things much better using that side.
Left brain, right brain! skills? Art history! Maybe this is what art teachers make students believe. True Art is a talent, if you got it you don't need a "teacher"
Almost every well-known artist in history had a teacher or master they learned from. For example, Raphael learned from Timoteo Viti who learned from Francesco Francia who learned from Marco Zoppo who learned from Lippo di Dalmasio who learned from Simone dei Crocifissi and it goes on and on. It's very difficult to find an artist from the past or today who is prolific and successful without never having had a teacher.
