Apple made a mistake of announcing a product before testing it, that's really as simple as it gets.
Yes, I can picture someone in the team saying "yeah, the samples have some thermal issues but we already figured out how to solve it, there will be no problem, you can include it in the show."
That's literally how every product announcement works across the industry lol that's why they don't immediately sell the device right after the announcement 🤦♂️ it's just that this one didn't work out like they expected...so no, it's not "as simple as it gets."
Gotta take risks sometimes and it didn't go in their favor this time

More often than not the product that gets announced is already well into production and ready to ship in a few weeks or even right after the announcement. In the mobile industry announcing something and releasing it months later is basically suicide. Tech gets old too fast.

The Mac Pro is not going to be what he expects or wants. It'll be some BS proprietary modular design so that Apple can give you "freedom" while milking you dry and leaving it so that you end up needing to replace it all within a couple of years anyway.
They are all about making flashy products that seem good initially but just trap you into an eco system, convince you that the problems with the devices are your fault, and are engineered to squeeze as much money out of you as possible rather than making a great product. (Which they used to do).
Apple are a completely anti-consumer company and people need to stop supporting them.

Me, an intellecTual: Electromagnetic induction is not the reason for AirPower being called off. The coils do operate via the phenomenon electromagnetic induction, but the cause of the problem is the heat developed by the impedance of the coil used. If electromagnetic induction were to say “am I a joke to you” it would imply Apple is challenging electromagnetic induction, Which clearly is not the case. Since the challenge Apple had to face was heat, ( the challenge isn’t to create alternating EM waves via the coil, but rather to do so for many coils by balancing the heat off the coils) Apple thought it could do it, hence “ we know how to do it” commentary. Now the field that actually deals with production of heat form electrical appliances is thermodynamics which anyone in a physics undergraduate degree would’ve taken ( maybe some engineering degrees offer thermodynamics class as well, but it is usually boiled down). Therefore it follows that it is actually thermodynamics that Apple thought it could handle. Which it could not eventually. Hence the meme.

If you’ve followed MKBHD’s channel for any amount of time you know he has the current version of the Mac Pro and has been waiting for the updated version for some time. I think the reason it was so important was bc it opened the doors to a wider variety of wireless charging solutions like a whole desk mat and various home and lifestyle integration, etc... and like you said it removes the tedious coil searching. It's definitely still on the back burner though.
They probably put so much engineering because they wanted to get ahead of usb c eu regulations then realized how flawed the tech is and backed out

To save on trying to read the backwards post @ 4:35:
"I do some work in the wireless power space. The AirPower mat was rumored to have in the range of 32 coils to allow for total x/y freedom. It's a bit hard to explain just how complicated that is. The magnetics and coil selection algorithms are super complicated. By comparison, the most number of coils that I have personally seen is 5 and that was a nightmare.
Inside the industry there was a high degree of skepticism that Apple would actually be able to make a working product, with the general consensus being that if they did get it working it would need to cost close to $300. At that price point I don't think it make much sense. You can have 5 very nice charging pads for the same price."
It is compicated but not insanely complicated, its just hard to make it fit without making the coils touch

Surely the only coil working is the one charging the device - all the others are off. Maybe the complication is detecting which is the closest lined up coil in the first place? Would all the coils have to switch on for a quick blip every second or so to report back to the processor?

I agree completely. This is something the old Apple never did. They very rarely did sneak peaks or teasers for products that weren't ready. The old Apple used to just announce something with little to no real warning and it was ready to ship in masses. The new Apple seems to be acting a lot more like Google - announcing ambitious projects early, before the product/service actually exists. They would then work hard to develop the offering, often leading to missed deadlines.

Like imagine you're an employee who knows the product is basically impossible to build but execs are trotting it around on stage saying how it'll be here within the year. Must be hard to buy into working like that
Steve Jobs would be livid -- not for them canning the project but for hyping it to oblivion so far away from a minimal viable product. Especially by Apple standards, this was careless beyond belief.

I really think they're slowly trying to get people to turn away from Macs. It seems like they want the iPad to take its place because of that sweet 30% cut that they can't get from most OS X apps. All the money is in software now.
