Gary that looks amazing. I have lived in the USA for 11 years I would kill to get something like that. They just don’t get the concept of Roast Sunday dinner. Me and the misses are coming back to the uk in January and I will be checking this place out for sure

Wonderful Sunday lunch. Back in England my late wife and I went out for Sunday lunch all the time. Again during the week, when I had a day off. We had some great ones, but I expect your "Imperial" would be tops. For atmosphere, definitely! 10/10

That Sunday roast really does look the biz. There is a pub/restaurant close to where I live and the chefs knock out a cracking Sunday lunch: but that looks even better - at about the same price.
That giant Yorkie alone is worth a 10/10. I still maintain, however, that the best Sunday roast is done at home. I go to my father's house where his cook makes a lamb roast every other week. The entire family congregate for a whole leg of lamb.
I know this pub very well! I lived in Chislehurst for many years, and frequently went to the Imperial Arms (named after Napoleon, who lived in the mansion that is at the top of the hill). The mansion (chateau, really) was purposely built for Napoleon's exile, and I went there every week as a Rotary club member. The Red Lion is also excellent for Sunday lunch, although I would recommend getting there at 12:00 as it gets very crowded. Also, Royal Indian Cuisine in Royal Parade is amazing for food and service, and it's hidden away down an alley.
Like most places selling roast dinners this one could have been more imaginative in choosing the accompanying vegetables. Where are the sprouts, the sliced runner beans or perhaps some broad beans or cauliflower cheese? Filling a large surface of the plate with peas is a cheap option.
Seasonal vegetables such as purple sprouting broccoli, young broad beans (fèves), young carrots, and fresh garden peas. Runner and French beans, de veined savoy cabbage, and in the winter months: swede, turnip, and brussel sprouts. Lots of other seasonal stuff too. Peas out of a bag is the lazy filler.

I had a lamb roast dinner in elverson road pub near deptford bridge which was £19.50 and i thought was good value it filled me up and tasted really good only went in there for a pint and to watch England v spain in the final but when i saw the roast dinners coming out i knew i needed one. People complaining of the price need to remember your in london there using top notch ingredients and they have cooks servers ect to pay.
It looks amazing! Can’t believe I’ve never been there and it’s my neck of the woods. I must have driven past it hundreds of times. We always used to ride our horses up to the Ramblers Rest nearby.

That was a first rate meal. Expensive but worth it. Makes you wonder what hidden gems there will be tucked all over the UK that are potentially just as good but haven't received the fanfare.

Another great review thanks Gary. Love that you are reviewing independents and what i call 'destination' eateries by which I mean venues people may justifiably take a longer journey to visit. The meal looked great. My last roast was Xmas Day 2022!! So sad : ( Just a suggestion, when at these places can the camera linger longer on the menu please? You're not alone in this, I don't understand why more food reviewers don't show the menu at all in their reviews or a super fast scan one cannot follow in real time. I know menus change and there's the web but it would be nice to see what's on offer during the vid on the day of review. Love your descriptions though and thats obviously the main bit. Keep it up!

Yorkshire puds were originally served as a first course to fill folk up so they wouldn't eat so much expensive meat in the next course Keep up the good work Gaz
Brilliant.... all free range meats. Not a cruelly produced chicken in sight. If we eat animals the least we can do is look after them and it pays off in the quality of the produce as shown here. Excellent value from people who care obviously.

I don't know how i had missed this video of yours but i am watching it belatedly.That was a terrific meal that you had with excellent portions except perhaps for the beef which seemed a little small.However it did look excellent and your marks seemed spot on
I thought the pub had a really nice decor and ambience, just right for Sunday lunch. It looks as if it intends to give good value for money but that Yorkshire pud would have been too daunting for me. Lots of people have a huge appetite for Sunday lunch but there's a point for me where I'm put off by excess. But overall, it certainly looked delicious. Maybe the Yorkshire pud was a tad overdone too? Gravy a bit gloopy for me, but I know not for most people and I believe you when you said it was great. Price was Ok for me given the size of the meal. Overall, that gave the Sunday roast pubs in the north a run for their money, but I have to say I've eaten in quite a few in Yorkshire which would rival it, but lovely that this pub shows it can be done here, 'down south'! 👍
Haha. I agree that some Sunday roasts can either be too big or too small but this one really was spot on and I can understand why it's been voted one of the best by many newspapers. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. I'm coming up North again soon!
Just starting on your back catalogue Gary looked like a superb Sunday roast being from Yorkshire love a Sunday roast but I have never had one locally that beets what we do at home they all let down in some way. Hope one day someone recommends one up in the north
That´s the best yorkshire pudding I have ever seen...golden and crispy on the outside. I thought the yorkshire in your video when you were at Roast looked too brown and it´s shape indicated it didn´t have much substance. The beef looked nicely red in the middle too ... cooked to perfection. Makes me hungry just looking at it!!!

Hello again Gary from Chiang-Mai Thailand . We have many pubs and restaurants in our area offering Sunday Roasts ; one in particular called Yummy Pizza , run by a German/Italian guy , whos Thai wife is nicknamed Yummy !!. Roast topside or Aussie/NZ Lamb leg at 6 quid ; Pork or Chicken at 5.50 quid . Large portion inc 4 veg and Yorkshire puds and all condiments . Pub grub yes but superb value as was this presentation
Another great looking plate, and what a yorkshire! Though potentially a double edge sword scenario... Your first SR, and you seem to have started at the top. So does that mean every other SR is now going to be a bit of a disappointment 🤔 Of course only time will tell, and so the search for an even better goes on. It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it eh 🙂

Ive been here loads its very good amazing quality of cooking and service. But whats also quite nice is down the wee lane next to the pub( 50 metres) a really old pub called the ramblers rest which also has amazing roasts and pizzas. Two reasons to visit.
I agree, I love a Sunday roast, but I'm finding more and more places are not doing parsnips. That was never a 10 in my opinion, I thought the Yorkshire was slightly too brown, maybe picky, but you're giving it 10.
That looked so good it made my mouth water , so the wife did our Sunday dinner , the chicken was juicy , runner beans where fresh , roast potatoes crispy , stuffing soft and fresh , yorkshire pudding crispy and soft inside and the gravy meaty , would I come back here ? you bet your life on it , I PAID FOR IT . good show every time , love it . That looked like an excellent roast, good value, loverly boozer. Just two minor improvements: serve the horseradish ( the devils work) separately and a bigger plate, yours looked a tad over crowded
Love this Gary, been there many times since a small kid but this is not in SE London but in Kent-if yu look on their website also says Kent + other parts of Chislehurst like: Chislehurst Caves on their website and on their leaflet salso says in Kent. It has also won Kent awards as well. My grandad lives in this part of Kent as well and his council letters say Kent as well/Sadiq Khan even said it is a LB and also in Kent. Whenever I go there for a roast + esp with that massive yorkshire I put loads of gravy within it to soak it up 😋 I have never had a below average meal there!
Hey Gary - love your videos but could I respectfully suggest that you chose a dish other than beef as you seem to chose beef almost all of the time and think it would be a idea to ring the changes of meat choice with regularity to give a fair comparison. Keep up the good work! . . . . 😎👍😎
Yes I can and it's something that I've made a note on going forward. The idea at the start of the channel was to do mostly Steak and Roast dinners which is why you probably see a lot of videos with beef in. I've got a couple more on the way but will make a conceited effort to try other things as I know how it looks. I assure you though, I do love other meats particularly gammon and chicken. Looks superb. Here in Croatia, beef is incredibly expensive. They don't have the grass to feed them. Would just like a bit extra gravy n a bit of mint sauce for that yorkie 😊 but nom nom
That Yorkshire Pudding took up 3/4 of the plate. They should do the Yorkshire Pudding ,Yorkshire style , with onion gravy on its own before the main dinner..
Hi Gary, a Chislehurst local here and just stumbled across your channel and videos - excellent and really entertaining by the way. The imperial is good however in my opinion there is better - The Bull’s Head, in nearby Pratt’s Bottom. Their Sunday roast is THE BEST in SE London. Check it out.
Notice no soup as a starter, something in season; leek and potato, ham and pea, watercress, cream of tomato, cucumber .. makes you feel at home. Cracking main, the veg stands out. Great rec.
Meal looked great. That bloody racket in the background would do my crust in! Hardly relaxing. Listen John you won't touch Mushrooms but spread that gopping horseradish stuff about. Come on guvnor!

That sounds like an amazing value far cheaper than here in the UK. I have to say this Sunday roast was exceptional.

Another great looking plate, and what a yorkshire! Though potentially a double edge sword scenario... Your first SR, and you seem to have started at the top. So does that mean every other SR is now going to be a bit of a disappointment 🤔 Of course only time will tell, and so the search for an even better goes on. It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it eh 🙂

Ive been here loads its very good amazing quality of cooking and service. But whats also quite nice is down the wee lane next to the pub( 50 metres) a really old pub called the ramblers rest which also has amazing roasts and pizzas. Two reasons to visit.

I agree, I love a Sunday roast, but I'm finding more and more places are not doing parsnips. That was never a 10 in my opinion, I thought the Yorkshire was slightly too brown, maybe picky, but you're giving it 10.
That looked so good it made my mouth water , so the wife did our Sunday dinner , the chicken was juicy , runner beans where fresh , roast potatoes crispy , stuffing soft and fresh , yorkshire pudding crispy and soft inside and the gravy meaty , would I come back here ? you bet your life on it , I PAID FOR IT . good show every time , love it . That looked like an excellent roast, good value, loverly boozer. Just two minor improvements: serve the horseradish ( the devils work) separately and a bigger plate, yours looked a tad over crowded

Love this Gary, been there many times since a small kid but this is not in SE London but in Kent-if yu look on their website also says Kent + other parts of Chislehurst like: Chislehurst Caves on their website and on their leaflet salso says in Kent.
It has also won Kent awards as well.
My grandad lives in this part of Kent as well and his council letters say Kent as well/Sadiq Khan even said it is a LB and also in Kent.
Whenever I go there for a roast + esp with that massive yorkshire I put loads of gravy within it to soak it up 😋
I have never had a below average meal there!

Hey Gary - love your videos but could I respectfully suggest that you chose a dish other than beef as you seem to chose beef almost all of the time and think it would be a idea to ring the changes of meat choice with regularity to give a fair comparison. Keep up the good work! . . . . 😎👍😎
Yes I can and it's something that I've made a note on going forward. The idea at the start of the channel was to do mostly Steak and Roast dinners which is why you probably see a lot of videos with beef in. I've got a couple more on the way but will make a conceited effort to try other things as I know how it looks. I assure you though, I do love other meats particularly gammon and chicken.

Looks superb. Here in Croatia, beef is incredibly expensive. They don't have the grass to feed them. Would just like a bit extra gravy n a bit of mint sauce for that yorkie 😊 but nom nom

They should do the Yorkshire Pudding ,Yorkshire style , with onion gravy on its own before the main dinner..

Hi Gary, a Chislehurst local here and just stumbled across your channel and videos - excellent and really entertaining by the way. The imperial is good however in my opinion there is better - The Bull’s Head, in nearby Pratt’s Bottom. Their Sunday roast is THE BEST in SE London. Check it out.

Notice no soup as a starter, something in season; leek and potato, ham and pea, watercress, cream of tomato, cucumber .. makes you feel at home. Cracking main, the veg stands out. Great rec.
