It's funny to watch this show because sellers come up with values out of thin air. They also do not understand the difference between wholesale and retail. Rick is not a collector he only buy at wholesale, just like every other store on the planet.
Something is worth what someone else will pay for it, not what you feel like it is worth.

I am a collector of the pocket watch . The one thing is that it is from Europe and Rick said the case was dated 1893 . The watch could be Swiss . In the time it was made was by hand one at a time. The Swiss watch makers were invited to Waltham Mass to see the factory . The factory was set up for high output And also Henry Ford visited . The watch would probably sell for what the guy wanted $400.00 which is low because it is a one of a kind made by hand. Hands are Gold the balance is Gold it also has the least of 7 jewels . Waltham watch was making watches with at least 15 to 19 maybe up to 21 jewels in mass production . The railroad approved watch was being produced here in America. I am not shocked that Rick has pocket watch knowledge but he is a buck chaser . That guy should have it appraised in my opinion .

The guy isn't completely delusional - $1,000 for a 400 year old pocket watch would probably have been a reasonable price, but the watch is obviously not 400 years old. The watch is by William Ehrhardt and he was one of the first watchmakers in Britain to utilise machine manufacturing for watch parts, enabling him to produce somewhere north of 300,000 watches in his career. For some of his watches $1,000 would be a bargain price, but this watch is not one of them. If I were to buy that watch for my collection, I'd expect to pay somewhere around £250-£300 ($340-$400) today and probably £150-£200 ($200-$270) at the time the episode was filmed.

It's missing the additional stamp to make it 1893. Without an additional head stamped facing left it's a 1918 watch.

I would still keep the watch and not because it would only be worth $100, but it is silver & pretty old. It still works, too! I think it would be a nice keepsake to have around and pass it as an heirloom.

It does not take much experience in pocket watches to know from the symbols that this watch was made in the late 1800's, (I think these symbols started 1880 if I remember correctly. European Swiss). If you look at Ebay you can buy these for under $120, Rick was giving him a fair offer. Now, I actually broke down a .800 case and weighed it 2 days ago, and it was 1.4 ounces. At today's silver price at around $25 per ounce that is around $37 in today's prices on that case. I bought an Elgin 18S around 10 years ago. I am looking at my Elgin Pocket Watch right now, it has a slight crack on the face. From the Serial Number 4,858,823, Elgin made this watch in 1892. I bought it on Ebay from a Watchmaker, it was serviced, it is not in a Silver Case, rather "Silveroid." It runs perfectly...I was the only person who bid on it...$25.00. The fact is that I am currently losing auctions for Elgins on Ebay that are nicer than that watch, lost one yesterday at $42. Honestly, $120 for that pocket watch? Anybody who looks at these pocket watches on Ebay knows you would have a very, very difficult time selling this for over $100. "$100 is a generous offer on this watch." - Rick is really stating facts.
