Engl Savage 120 MKII vs Revv Generater MKIII - I play them in mixes, isolated riffs and discuss/demo features - including the Two Notes tech that comes with the Revv.
I’m a huge Revv fan and love it. I can’t get into the engl, maybe I have hearing problems but the revv seems to pierce my ears and it’s easier for me to hear the notes. The Engle I have trouble hearing the notes it’s like it brings the sound but with a truck load of other stuff.
Revv seems like it has a much better feel seems bouncier and fatter. Also smoother and more pleasant to the ears but the engl seems more angry and monstrous and engls still have a great feel I would recommend anyone try both for themselves here
They both held their own very well.
On the savage, when you have the contour on, it is a bit smoother. I had the contour on for this whole shootout. My only regret is I didn't turn it off and shoot it out that way also.
@@TONEWARSgearshow I'd be curious if you EQed the Revv and used the Fat mode, could you get the Revv to sound that fat and smooth? TheEngl sound fat and warm as hell. Almost like a Diezel.
Already tried three different REVV 120 MKIII amps! The first two had a digital clipping issue on the line out because of an assembly error. The last one blows the fuse every two/tree times when you turn it on. Now I've given up on finding a REVV amp that works without problems - I think I will switch to EVH Stealth. Sorry REVV...
Mine works extremely well
Played a Revv 120 everyday for 3 months, couldn't bond with it, sold it.
What did you end up getting?
@@TONEWARSgearshow EVH Stealth 🙂
@@steveo4253 great choice!!
@@steveo4253 I love them both
@@TONEWARSgearshow 9 months later and still makes me smile after every rehearsal !
man, I love those riffs, they sound meaner and fucking more aggressive with the ENGL, I hope you do an ENL savage MK2 Kemper pack very soon!
Thank you so much. Yes, the savage will be in my next pack.
Sorry it's taking me so long to get around to doing that. I've done a lot of upgrades on the studio and it's really taken up a lot of my time.
The REVV, is soooo much clear in the tone, midrange is just wow, Engl is good too, but dark and muddy,
The bottom end of the ENGL is way huge! But the top end is silky smooth on the REVV and the built-in stuff and diversity of tones makes it the winner for me……by a hair! 😂
Cool comparison! I love the new Savages.
There's a clarity to the Revv. Sounds more... evolved. Sits better in the mix for me..
Engl hands down winner. Just such a clean amp. Honestly didn't like either with the Fishman..... probably because I'm a passive guy though
Yea man I used to be a passive aggressive guy but I fought my way out of it 🤘🔥🤘
Revv sounds brighter and leaner.
So AWESOME, Jarrod!! I'm totally humbled and honored that you made this video. I love the way you explain these high-feature, hi-gain amps in such well defined detail, and straight from the fingers to the heart. Your integrity is un-impeachable. You absolutely made both amps sound stellar. On the first switch from Savage CH 2 to Revv Purple CH, I heard the exact difference that I was hoping for between the two. I love the Savage, but CH 2 & 3 are basically unusable for me. I was running Savage Ch 3 as a Glassy Funk Rock Tone, not at all what it was intended to be. Your breakdown of the Revv channels is excellent. That Green CH has a ton of old school charm. The modern tones from the Revv Purple & Red I also really like your points about the Two Torpedoes. Very useful, indeed. That would give me the option of running stereo effects in the Helix (in 4CM). The G8 Gate Pedal that Revv made from the Gen Mk3 amp is already controlling all the negative hum from my Diezel, yet retains all the tone. The amp sounds like it reflects that same workmanship. You totally rule, Jarrod!! 🎸
It was totally my pleasure. It was a really fun episode to do as well. I really learned a lot while I did this. I honestly think that the flexibility that the Revv has is more like what you're looking for.
Keep me posted on your decision. Cheers!!
@@TONEWARSgearshow I will definitely let you know. I'll update during the live streams.
I have chopped by pedal collection in 1/2 by going REVV
Jarod. I really wish you could get your hands on an Engl Savage mk2 60 watt. With it being 60 watts with el34's, i would love to see you compare that with the Engl Savage mk2 120. Your channel is the best amp demo channel!
A friend of mine brought one over and honestly we couldn't tell the difference between them
@TONEWARSgearshow wow, I'm very surprised, but great to know! Thank you so much.
@@josephrusso7069 my pleasure
I have a revv 100p mk111 generator head and the 4x12 box. Magical metal
Is the Revv Twin Tracker only a recording feature or can it be used live at gigs thru a cabinet?
It can be used live when you go direct out from the amp via XLR
Revv all the way. Sounds way more open and detailed imo
Hi there! Thanks again for your reviews! I had a question about the direct outs and twin tracker. I was close to getting a Kemper or Fractal Audio but to me, digital isn't guite there yet. Is the direct out and can Sims that good? That is a nice feature of the digital units and it's cool the Revv has this! The other thing is the twin tracker. That is cool about how it can double lead lines. Is that usable at any time with the amp or only when going direct? If you are at a gig just playing the Revv into a cab, without going direct, can you use the twin tracker? I assume it's only available for direct with the direct outs.
Thanks!
Thanks for commenting. Yes the twin tracker is only if you're using the direct out. It's part of the 2 notes software that's built inside of the amplifier.
It sounds like your Savage has more cut and punch compared to the Revv. Can there v be dialed in to get that Engl cut?
I see you have the kids on the Revv under 12:00, more like 11:00.
I often run mine at 12:30-1:00 to get that cut and chunk. Do you like it dialed back? I don't have an Engle so I have no personal experience. Plus the blue mode would change the tone too.
I have the Revv as well and trying to get that fur you have here with the Engl. Is that upper mids I wonder? Either way, I enjoy that. I love my Revvbut I'm enjoying the mid cut I hear in your Engl. Seeing if I can get that cut with my Revv. Sounds like upper mids but I could be wrong. THANKS brother.
Considering an Engl or Diezel next.
Crazy how THICK and FAT the Revv is.
Tried an EVH recently and didn't like it much for me! Sounds awesome fornmmay guys. If I just did metal, I'd like it! For me it was too aggressive all the time. Not versatile enough.
Love what I hear from Engl though.
Yeah, the Revv is a great blend of thick and aggressive
@@TONEWARSgearshow Thanks again.
Can the green crunch channel also have good texture for classic rock or is it VHT or Mark V bright and dry?
For Red I need fat, juicy almost Bogner type leads. :)
I would have liked to see the Revv's Flagship against ENGL's flagship the Special Edition
Revv seems to standout a little better in the mix
I love both those amps, I have the mk1 Savage, and the. mk 2 revv 120. And if I run it in my captor x I can come dam close to make them sound nearly the same, of course using the EQ feature, on my fryette V2 it starts to show the difference between them. I have never tried the newer versions of either of those amps. But I am sure you can't go wrong with either one. On a different note, do you have any issues with outside frequency noise with all of the electronics around you? I have a hell of a time with it. I have about 12 hooked up ready to. The rest is in my storage room. I have tried everything. Power conditioners, GFI plugin and breakers. Higher quality shielding cables. And it's helped but still gives me hell. Especially when recording. Some days it's fine others it's really bad. I have lost money over this issue. Having bands or sessions scheduled to record, but the interference is just too bad. So if anyone can help please. Sorry for being so long winded.
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I have had some issues here from time to time. Have you tried the Hum x? It really helps
@@TONEWARSgearshow no I have not. Thank you I am going to look in to that.
@@jrlee243 my pleasure. It really works very well
@@TONEWARSgearshow I don't mean to go back and forth on this, I know you are a busy man. I have to chas down the interference, and I have a little bit. From my amp to my cab it's all good. The only thing, and I think it's the culprit ( but not totally sure) my pedals. I use a plug to a five way stringers. So it's not independent power supply. I know you recently switched to a pedal board, and I am about to go back to my helix because of these issues. What kind of power supply do you use for your pedal board?
@@jrlee243 I use the voodoo lab mondo
Would you say the Mud Killer is your favorite with the Revv?
I love how deep, thick and heavy your tone is with the mud killer hitting the amp. :)
Your green and purple sound amazing with that pedal.
It makes your green channel really heavy. Right now I'm down to the Friedman Buxom, Golden Pearl and Dirty Shirley.
Looking to get the Mud Killer or Dire Wolf soon.
Yeah i'd say the mud killer is a big contender with this amplifier.
I also like the grid slammer with it
@@TONEWARSgearshow Thanks man, not familiar with the Grid Slammer. I'd like to try one. Mud Killer is next on my list.
I noticed in your Engl Savage vs Revv Generator video, your Engl had more cut. I run my mids higher than you on the Revv. I wonder if that's why I hear more cut and punch on the Engl. Curious us if the Revv are ill keep up cut wise with the kids higher. I run mine around 1:00 on my Revv and I think yours were around 11:00. I find that amp gains a lot of mid cut when you get them to 1:00 or higher.
@@Bognerman14 My pleasure, I will try those settings next time I fire that amplifier up.
The grid slammer is a great pedal, especially when you set it up like this, gain all the way down, volume all the way up and tone all the way up
@@TONEWARSgearshow Nice, thanks. I gigged the Revv and found I had to crank the mids to keep pace with an Orange amp.
Your Wngoe has serious cut in that demo and the Revv seems more balanced but lacked that cut. I know the Revv gains serious cut with those mids up. Blue mode as well.
That said, I like having the versatility of the Revv. The green channel wirh the Friedman boosts, especially the Dirty Shirley, is heavenly.
Before it even begins im gonna say a clear engl for the win but the revv should be more flexible
you dont happen to have access to a Redstuff Minotaurus by any chance? Heard one once and it was pretty hefty. Great video mate- had my attention for the whole thing!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. To your question, I've never heard of that brand. I'll look into it. Thanks for the heads up
Synergy, since Revv is making a module and savage is already out!!
+1 I’m all in on the Synergy stuff.
@@charlesrocks I am so into the Synergy stuff, I started making module cases, Burns Cases, look me up
SWEET FAT BABY JESUS I LOVE THE REVV 😍
Oh yeah Revv to my ears wins it’s not as thick but has a more focused British tone especially on the first song
Which would you say is the one thats less harsh in the room and feels more chewier?
That's a tough one. Neither amp is harsh.
Is that Steven slate drums? The snare sounds like a plastic bucket
The Revv sounds so thicc and tone heavy. The Engl cuts so good tho.
Hey go live I know your palying guitar right now I just want to hear some mixes!
I wish I could. I'm putting a new pedalboard together. Stay tuned...
do you own a 6 string? ya that would be better for your demos.
Wow, the Engl sounds a good bit fatter. I think Diezels are even fatter sounding but the Engl sounds so good here.
Revv sounds smaller or thinner than the Engl.
I hear the Engl Inferno is even fatter and warmer than the Savage.
Jarrod, do you think the Savage handle classic rock to 90s fringe and hard rock? It seems really aggressive and meant mostly for metal but I may be joining a band that covers from Classic rock to VH to 90s rock and metal all the way to modern. Can the Savage really do it all? I wish the Revv sounded as fat as the Engl, because I like the layout and design of the Revv.
The Revv is PHAT as hell. Vert thick sound. For what you're doing, I think it's a better choice
@@TONEWARSgearshow Thanks man, I think it's just the way you had the Engl set with the Smooth switch on, it made it ultra fat and smooth for leads and warm.
Yes, I love fat, thick tones for rhythm and lead!
But yes, I want to be able to play Van Halen and Slipknot on the same amp. Leaning toward the Revv.
@@TONEWARSgearshow Jarrod, does it take pedals well?
I just joined a band that does stuff like Alice in Chains, Metallica, Pearl Jam, STP, Tool, Green Day, etc. A mix of 90s and 2000s rock and hard rock but I still love rocking out on anything from Van Halen and Lynch to Slater and Slipknot. :)
@@Bognerman14 it takes pedals very well.
@@TONEWARSgearshow So I'm curious can you get the Revv Red to sound as far and rich as the Savage? I love a really thick, singing lead tone and that Engl is unreal.
Man the revv sounds like what I want to hear and the savage sounds like it has a wet blanket on it
i really never heard a good tone from a revv. To me, Revv sounds like a tube amp trying to sound like a meme of a plugin
