Andy Peebles soul show on Piccadilly was a must listen ! Mike Shaft took over when Andy went to R1 in 78. Soul and City the twin obsessions of Manchester!

My dad Phil Sayer worked with Mike Shaft at GMR. Absolutely loved him to bits. Mike was a lovely man.

I've just realised watching this Ian, who my mysterious benefactor was. Peter Swales' name was mud in my house when I was a kid, because my mum looked after his elderly mother for free 'because that Peter Swales doesn't care!'
But my family were reds, so I got all Franny Lees old training kits & from then on I became a blue! I can't thank u enough Peter 😅💙

I hate the way some City "Fans" treated Peter Swales. He was a true City fan. Put loads of his own money into the club. Yes he was passionate about overtaking Man U and it became a bit of an obsession. Maybe he shouldn't have brought Malcolm back and not paid what he did for Steve Daily. However, his heart was in the right place. RIP

Brilliant interview with Andy Peebles Ian, I remember him on Piccadilly radio in the late 1970s. Didn't know he was the last journalist to interview John Lennon before he was murdered in 1980. Always knew he was a City fan, some great stories there. Regarding Peter Swales, his obcession with trying to make us bigger than the rags obviously consumed him, it was never going to happen, but no one could ever question his love for our club, he definitely stayed on at City far too long, he would have loved the last decade for sure. RIP PS.

Really enjoyed this, I could listen to Andy for hours. I have fond memories of the Peter Swales years. I also remember the Swales out campaign going on and not really understanding it. Great to hear Andy talking about the “sands nightclub in Stretford” My older sister was in there one night and got me Roger Palmers autograph on a tissue. I still have it somewhere. 😁👍👕

Would love to hear his views on Franny Lees chairmanship. He was the last person to interview John Lennon he was told about his death as soon as he touched down in England after interviewing Lennon in New York.Andy was a fabulous DJ listened to him for years . He’ was a great cricket commentator as well.

Interesting stories, a few dodgy names (Stuart Hall, Louis Edwards) and a dodgy nightclub The Sands! 😅 Noticed the Beatles album in the background, wasn't Andy the last person to interview John Lennon in December 1980?

Swales was long before my time but from what I've heard, not many people doubted he was City through and through. It doesn't mean he was a good chairman though. I've heard some allude to him wanting to outdo United too much for his own good, which led to some of his biggest mistakes. Which is what caused the decline starting in the 70s.

peter swales was a terrible chairman, but his heart was always in the right place, by far the worst chairman of my lifetime, was francis lee, absolutely destroyed city, makes my blood boil every time i see him at games now

I wonder if Andy remembers during the 70s...he commentated on Farouk Engineer's benefit Cricket match at Marple C.Club (I think) from the ground...& myself and a mate did a streak (all the rage then) from one boundary to the other... straddling the stumps as we went. He awarded us 6/10 over the tannoy "for effort!"

United were streets ahead of City and everyone else in marketing and building the brand, and that's why they could pack in 60,000 in the Second Division. I don't blame Swales although he hung on too long. In the summer they played to huge crowds in America with blue shirts everywhere and that illustrates how far they have come.

I'm 55 ... just to place me in time. Good on you Andy but I have to say this ... I utterly detest Peter Swales, everything that he did and everything that he represented. He destroyed City and it was his utter vanity that drove us into the ground from the mid-late 70s until he was thrown out. We have recovered through luck since then. I was at Oakwell in about 86 or 7 and loads of us got to the ground before the team coach. We were stood cheering the team off the bus ... all of the Youth Cup winners etc. Last and least was Swales ... dressed like a Battenberg cake with a comb-over. He seriously expected that the biggest cheers would be saved for him. He was wrong. Sorry but I hate the man!

I wonder if PS would gave bitten the Council's hand off at taking over COM's like Franny did. Franny's funeral today btw and rest in peace ace footballer and blue. Franny was a visionary abd knew our getting a wonderful new stadium a stones throw from where we started would be the making of us again and how right he was. Great vid btw thank you boys. I notice our famous fans are always proper fans who know their stuff

Peter Swales loved Manchester City and did everything he possibly could to keep them as one of the top clubs but it ended sadly by yobs, encouraged by certain ‘City people’who didn’t appreciate what he did for City.
