She doesn't "hate her heritage" she simply recognizes that white people have done wrong in the past, and even though we've progressed things still aren't equal! Or are you suggesting that every white person needs to love the fact that some of their ancestors owned slaves and oppressed black folks? Every decent person would be ashamed of that, unless you are a member of the kkk or a Neo-nazi

      @@sazizi3570 I can understand that what Ellen said didn't sit well with you... but I think you are missing the fundamental point she was trying to get across, which is "white privilege"... and unfortunately, because of your inability to comprehend this notion, you are part of the issue. Thinking it's "messed up" that she left an all white party because "race isn't your only identifying factor", and white people have "different upbringings", is perfectly dismissive of white privilege. White privilege is very real, and is one thing, that every white person in America has in common. To rationalize your statements by bringing up an all Hispanic, Black or Asian party makes no sense, since none of the aforementioned groups are born into the same privilege that is inherent with white people as a whole in America. White people come from all walks of life, but each white person in America, from birth, is considered and regarded higher than any minority (Hispanic, Black, White etc.). Minorities have to WORK to earn the basic regard that all white people are BORN to... that's what "white privilege" means. Until you understand that, I'm sure subsequent discussions focusing on race & privilege in America will not sit well with you.

    • @luvicandy
      @luvicandy Před 5 lety +6

      @@sazizi3570 If any of this is lost on you, please understand that I'm not saying every white person in today's society made the choice to be privileged... rather, they were born into the privilege without choice (though the privileged roots are sprung out of human injustices ((Native American genocide, indentured servitude, slavery, etc.))... Ellen is essentially saying that white people must now make the choice to stand up against white privilege and stand for equality. The color of ones skin does not denote their worth.

    What a effing gold mine!!! Wow! Kudos to the ladies for being so honest.
    Also, I've realised here that just because one is silent for most of a conversation does not mean that they have it better, but perhaps they're being educated. I hope Emma Roberts feels empowered to use her priveledge in her own spaces as much as Ellen does.

    This video means so much to me right now. It’s “everything” I’ve been fighting for ever since I became an artist, ever since I became a photographer, and every time I tried to break into media. I’ve always wanted to work behind the scenes but as a minority the “walls” are there! And because we don’t match behind the camera our populations the narratives keep getting pushed and affecting our society in dark ways!

      Michael Dominick The biggest racial barriers are economic. I went to an art magnet school, learned computer graphics, film, and design when my parents couldn’t even afford to buy me a computer. Graduated with a GPA over 4.0. Had to work McDonalds, Retail, and Call Centers at minimum wage to pay my bills until I could “afford” anything close to what I needed to film, edit, and create.
      By the time I had the tools and started to get freelance jobs I was coming up fast to being 30 years old. Those that had support, got in and became my competition in their early 20s. They could afford to undercut my rates. All of that before we get into racial bias which I have experienced from clients and their own peers. I never cheated a client but they were kind enough to tell me what their colleagues thought about me.

    I love how Gabrielle Union brought up the idea "I wonder how the shoot would have been if woman was behind the camera?" I see more and more woman doing a job that only few years ago were dominated by man. In less than a month I met 4 DJ ladies, 2 videographers and several photographer. It is soooooo inspiring to see females doing jobs that usually man would be hired to do!!! Thank you for encouragement to open PAY conversation!! LOVE this interview! It helps me a lot being a female photographer :)

    This is exactly why Dania Gurira who plays Michonne on The Walking Dead should be paid the same if not more than Daryl and Carol. Ms. Danai is hitting the stratosphere of her career which comes with more responsibilities but who could handle that with more grace than her. A woman who is multitalented and is one of the main shines of the show. AMC should pay her more for all the aspects I just listed above, especially with TWD movies being planned and announced already with her co star Andrew Lincoln.

    I love this. So much. I can tell Ellen gets it. My heart. I am a black woman who navigates a predominantly white space, where conversations about Kapernick and police brutality leave me cornered weighing my options deciding whether I should speak my truth as everyone else is, or keep quite to keep peace. During those moments, all I wish for inside is to be understood like how Ellen understands them. She recognizes her privilege, her power, and her duty, and I love her so much for that. My goodness. This was amazing.

I think this perfectly sum up Ellen Pompeo ❤️ and i love that all the women are discussing the truths. Sometimes as a viewer we don't think that they would have to go through this kind of problem. (Or its just i am ) But they do too. And it's heartbreaking. May all the women break this cycle. I loved this conversation .love how Gina and Gabrielle put their opinion. And i understand that Emma is youngest of them all so she just listened to them. Its actually wise. Loved these conversations.❤️❤️

Your diversity is truly inspired by love. I work daily to open my heart and mind and vulnerability as you have. It's not just like this in hollywood, television and movies. I work in a hospital and it's exactly the same. People getting hired in making more money than myself and others even though we have the experience and the seniority. Human resources tells you if your not happy with what your making find another job. It's like what do you do? You give your all and don't feel appreciated!!

      Lady ARH... you are so right. You want to speak up and stand for what you know is right. But it difficult because wen you do a lot of times you are standing alone. Even wen ppl around you see the issue we all have been conditioned to be appreciative because we are women of color. This is very much so an a conversation everyone should be having. It’s not fair and it’s been past due for something to be done about it.
