Dominic Cummings tells MPs Johnson ‘unfit’ to be PM

  • In an epic session to MPs, the prime minister's former chief adviser Dominic Cummings turned on his former boss, accusing him of not being fit to run the country. He compared Boris Johnson to a broken shopping trolley, and claimed chaos in the government's Covid decision making resulted in tens of thousands of people dying "who didn't need to". (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Herd immunity, in which hundreds of thousands more would have died, had been the policy until he made them change it, he said.
Mr Cummings painted a picture of an imploding government, lacking data and following bad scientific advice. He went on to accuse the health secretary of lying repeatedly about PPE, medical treatment and the supposed shield around care homes.

The only thing is that, yes, they have been pushing the vaccine for all they are worth, but they have at the same time been actively suppressing other far more effective remedies.

On contracts he seemed to take the view that governments should be able to ignore the rules when there is an emergency. The rules are there to ensure good value and protect against corruption. There is usually a procedure for fast track contracts in emergency, and of the £37bn contracts that the government handed to friends and supporters, without competitive tendering, the only legal requirement on them was to publish the contracts afterwards for the public to see, but the government has not done that. Also there's usually a list kept of approved contractors who are already checked according to various criteria before going on the list. They should have picked contractors from the approved list if they were not going to have competitive tendering, so I disagree with Cummings' attitude there that in an emergency you just throw the rules out of the window. Part of the problem is the huge cuts the government made to civil servants since 2010. There's no spare capacity now. The Department of Health and Social Care is only about 2000 strong in terms of permanent staff (civil servants) and with Covid and Brexit on top of the day job in the same year they would be overloaded. It's a false economy anyway because the government now deals with demands it can't manage by bringing in expensive consultants on separate contracts.

There comes a time when people should be 'judged by the company they keep'.
Cummings is a deeply loathsome person. Johnson surely knew that by the end of the referendum, yet Johnson still chose to delegate enormous power to Cummings after becoming PM. What was Johnson thinking? Did he think he could control Cummings? That would make him a bad judge of character too.
