We know that Gordon was an apprentice before the third movie, Gordon could've saved Amanda if he was near the building of the game or was hiding. Also we saw that in the third movie Amanda has done something to Adam and John said her weakness was her emotions. Also when John said that he was forgiving Amanda for those people(Eric and Adam) We may conclude from that Adam is somewhere else where John knows and may have became an apprentice. Also we never learned the reason behind Gordon's becoming of an apprentice, it might be that John made an agreement for Adam's life if he becomes an apprentice.

@@TheShape45 There is a huge 'mistake' in the movie, if you watch the first and the third movie you can CLEARLY see that he is shackled from his left foot and not just that but John also SPECIFICALLY orders Amanda to shackle him from his left foot, but in the rest of the franchise his corpse is shackled from his right foot. It may be a 'mistake' but they specifically added a line to Tobin Bell's script to underline that Adam was shackled from his left foot.
