  • Hauk Buen was born on May 11, 1933, on the Buen farm in Jondalen, Kongsberg, as the son of the fiddler Anders A. Buen and the singer Margit Buen, born Tjønn. His maternal grandfather, Hans Johnsen Tjønn, engaged in theoretical research on folk music. His uncle, John H. Tjønn, was a renowned fiddle maker, and his aunt, Bergit Tjønn, was a well-known Hardanger fiddle player from whom Hauk received his apprenticeship. Hauk also learned folk music from his parents and recorded performances of well-known fiddlers of his time. Olav Løndal and Svein Løndal were also influential mentors. He was the brother of folk musicians Knut Buen and Agnes Buen Garnås, as well as the sculptor Kari Buen.
Hauk Buen continued the tradition established by his father, Anders A. Buen, and learned from older fiddlers from Øst-Telemark, including Myllarguten, Lars Fykerud, Håvard Gibøen, and Knut Dale. He won the B-class at Landskappleiken in 1953 and later advanced to the A-class. Buen achieved multiple victories at Landskappleiken, including Odda in 1962 and Notodden in 1963, and triumphed in various local competitions. In 1973, he received the Myllarguten's Gold Medal.
