Natural World: Weasels - Feisty & Fearless
Members of the weasel family are often portrayed as the villains of the natural world, but do they deserve this reputation? By following the adventures of a tiny orphaned weasel named Twiz, this film reveals the true nature of these pocket-sized predators, which relative to their size have a bite more powerful than a tiger's. In Yorkshire, a unique garden rigged with over 50 cameras gives a rare insight into the dramatic life of a mother stoat as she tries to raise her first family. And new science uncovers the problem-solving abilities of the honey badger, the secrets behind the ferret's legendary flexibility, and the remarkable sense of smell of the wolverine. Together, using their extraordinary skills, this feisty and fearless family have conquered the planet.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

I wish I was the world’s leading expert in Ferret Locomotion….
Choose ferry locomotion instead. It's more profitable!
Don't we all😭
I shall become the leading expert in dachshund locomotion
@@Kenan-Z @@×211233
Ferret Locomotion was a great 60s song too
Anybody that's ever had a ferret and had one of those clear plastic tubes, they run in that's maybe only 3 to 4 inches in circumference, know that ferret can run through that tunnel, turn around completely in that tunnel by bending in half and run the other way at top speed, they don't slow down unless they're sleeping. 😹
Lmao. So true. They never stop until they drop
No but I really want to get one for them
@@Pikachew675 Amazon I think they're like 10 or 15 dollars. I kind of think it's overpriced, but most pet toys are. 😄
@@Pikachew675 if you do, ferret proof your house. they're worse than babies or cats at finding trouble you didn't even know existed and embracing it.
I know right. My girlfriend has 4 of them one of them is a bit of a fatty but god does he move.
Of course the leading expert in Ferret Locomotion's first words are "Ferrets are really neat !"
"an animal in liquid form", that's such an interesting way to put it
Like a cat but.... more
@razzle dazzle , exactly what I thought, lol
@@rqzzlldqzzls lmao yes more
That's basically what organisms are made off
Octopus: "... and I took that personally."
“Is the world’s leading expert of Ferret Locomotion”
Gritty, western music playing and a slow-motion walk. Finally, the people who actually do good in the world are getting the recognition they deserve.
*Gritty western music* "Ferrets are really neat 😁"
Soooo ferret basically an upgrade version of cat in liquid state
Mustelids like ferrets are in between cats and dogs in the evolutionary chain.
@@oliverm7138 interesting. I know I've read about this stuff before, and recognize the term, but could probably use a refresher. Might look into it but I've got to go grocery shopping I guess.
@@oliverm7138 similarly, foxes had me befuddled for a bit. But they're basically dogs or canines that (forget what the term is; could be either "divergently" or "convergently" depending on your perspective, but that's probably the ego loss from the acid trip I've likely been experiencing) with cat-like properties
Cat snakes.
@@seankelly8906 If I remember correctly Mustelids are more closely related to bears and seals than either dogs or cats but the carnivoran tree is a bit of a mess anyway so it doesn't really matter.
I have two ferrets and watching them play is endlessly entertaining. One of mine is actually a polecat/ferret hybrid and her agility and climbing ability is incredible.
"Dr. Angela Horner is the world's leading expert in ferret locomontion"
Peak apex predator specialization. Our species is soo successful we are producing crazy specialists at this point.
Easy to be the best in the world when you're the only one
Europeans have been doing this for centuries.
@@DIYToPen How would she be the only one? If the right methodology is used, there will always be someone who knows the most about any particular subject than another. For her to know the unique features of this creature she would have to know about the same for many other groups as demonstrated in the video. I can see her being a consultant in a science fiction movie about prehistoric creatures. Something like Jurassic Park and making the CGI effects look realistic and believable.
"Apex predator" we didnt get to where we are today by hunting. It was farming.
@@roth4916 We're still predators, if you didn't knew.
"ferret locomotion" isn't a term i thought i'd hear today
Love your username 😭😭😭
@@ichokedonadoritoonce7670 thank you hahaha i love yours too
My friend once called ferrets "noodle raccoons" and that's all I can call ferrets now
They're also commonly called "cat snakes".
The wild version are called _pole_ cats (skunks are named after ferrets, in fact), but surprisingly this isn't a reference to their length, but rather the fact that they like eating _poultry_ .
Stinky slinkies. Carpet sharks.

My friend runs a Ferret Rescue. These are such intelligent and cheeky little animals ❤️
@@JNL37Dyxce5 why are you tagging bird bath vids everywhere?
If it isn't too much trouble do you know if they do adoptions as well? I'd like to know the name of their rescue as I'd like to look into them.
Such a cute, and incredible animals!
Stinky little devils
I have the pleasure of owning 4 ferrets, and seeing them dash through their little clear tube (and sometimes going BACKWARDS because they end up trying to go in opposite ends at the same time) is always so crazy. They're like little noodley rockets.
I once came across a ferret someone had released in a woods in wiltshire. It came out of a hedge, sniffed my ankle for a few seconds and then bit down and held on. I shook my leg so much and it went absolutely flying
I hope you took your rabies vaccines.

Would have been interesting to see another level to show how they can compress rib cages to 1/2 an inch! Great video!

I thought it was funny that she’s the worlds leading expert but has never done this before when studying them? Lol
She probably has but "yea we have done that dozens of times and it's always the same" does not sound so good on film
@@Nico-od4yv a true expert doesn't lie. There is no need to lie and say that it has never been done before. You can just do it and say it's a great demonstration (which in my opinion still is not.)
The ferret wasn't after anything so saying that the ferret didn't loose much speed at all isn't a good conclusion. The ferret wasn't really running neither while walking nor when crouching.
Also you can clearly see that the "30% longer" part is total bullshit, and the diagram is as well. The point from the back went from in front of the hip to the start of the tail. They were trying to exagerate everything in this video.
@@panosmpasiourasserrano7449
Experts lie all the time mate….. scientists do it cause otherwise they lose their funding
The more specialized your niche, the less it takes to be a leading expert.
I myself am a world's leading expert in the black, left handed, female perspective in people who have completed Dark Souls and the original Amethyst, princess of gem world comic run at roughly the same time.
@@panosmpasiourasserrano7449 It always amazes me when people think they known more than someone who dedicated their life to studying a certain subject. Do you really believe the CGI Artist making the diagram cared if the points were accurate placed? I wouldn't trust it over the research. And why would they lie to begin with??
They mean, "up to 30% longer." Kinda like how humans can be up to 8′ 11″ tall, doesn't mean we all our. I'm sure they studied multiple Ferrets, not just the one shown, and one just happened to be 30% longer when its spine was strained out. It might have suffered from kyphosis. 😁
What's a Ferret's favourite ride?
The Ferret-wheel.
Rat: "I am the most flexible little creature ever! No one can touch me!"
Ferret: "Hi."

Almost 10 million!

Almost?
Every time I look at these videos, I have to go play with my ferret.
Soooo cool!!! Thank you for sharing and showing. 🐾🕊❤️
cat-sneks are liquidated mischief. they can turn into liquid the way vampires turn into mist to sneak inside and steal and hide one shoe from every pair you own then dance and laugh at you as you limp around with one shoe on, searching frantically because you are late for work.
Found someone else who has a ferret with a shoe addiction 😂 rocket steals my shoes as soon as I come home
The power of evoluation never ceases to amaze me..
Ha! Ferrets can go much faster than this. In fact, I'd say faster while in a tunnel.
When I had ferrets, when they'd go inside their clear "clothes drier hose" and I'd run my hand quickly over the hose, they would bolt through the hose even faster than when they are out in the open.
Stoats, weasels, minx, and ferrets, these are all super cool animals
That’s really crazy, thank you for this badly needed information
God i miss my Gus. He was a huge white ferret, and a total boofhead.
😢
in the future maybe you shouldn't let your ferret smoke weed
So lovely weasel
Soft and smooth
Great video, I love this kind of experiments.
Brilliant observation
The ferret used in this looks so much like mine (her mask is less prominent, and her nose is a darker color)! I love ferrets ^^
I had a weasel knocking my door trying to sell me an unwanted TV Licence,
A simple (primitive?) experiment setup though, very inspiring. Much could be learned about its locomotor flexibility, cost effectiveness etc., to name a few.
Yes youtube, i needed this
Very near to 10 million !
Worth watching. Thanks for sharing

legit i watched this cuz our ferrets can fit under the bathroom door 💀
An exceptionally flexible spine allows weasels to move within a narrow space.
Ferrets are such beautiful creatures. Theyre so cool! : D
90% of our time underground and 80% of our time asleep, yes.
What a clever experiment!
