Natural World: Weasels - Feisty & Fearless
Members of the weasel family are often portrayed as the villains of the natural world, but do they deserve this reputation? By following the adventures of a tiny orphaned weasel named Twiz, this film reveals the true nature of these pocket-sized predators, which relative to their size have a bite more powerful than a tiger's. In Yorkshire, a unique garden rigged with over 50 cameras gives a rare insight into the dramatic life of a mother stoat as she tries to raise her first family. And new science uncovers the problem-solving abilities of the honey badger, the secrets behind the ferret's legendary flexibility, and the remarkable sense of smell of the wolverine. Together, using their extraordinary skills, this feisty and fearless family have conquered the planet.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

Years ago, my dad ran a restaurant in the middle of the city, and it became clear that they had a serious rat problem. After filling the place with traps and sealing off every single way into the kitchen bar one door (including the fire escape at the owner's insistence), they realised that they had to be coming up from beneath the floor somehow. So they hired a ratcatcher, who came in with a single ferret with a bell attached to its collar so he'd be able to hear it if it didn't come back up. Long story short, ferret disappeared and the guy, presuming it had gone into the sewer and drowned or gotten stuck somehow, refused to send another down. However, they started seeing far less evidence of rats. Months later, the staff could on occasion still hear the sound of a very faint bell from under the tiles. They'd leave meat out to try and coax it back up but evidently it was having its fill of rats down there, because it never did.

An important thing to consider: Ferrets are a domesticated species of weasel and intentionally have weaker bites than their relatives so they should chase prey out of their holes instead of killing them within. So if you've been bit by a ferret, just imagine how much worse the other mustelids are.

A weasel jaw doesn't snap shut under full tension like a trap either, it nibbles around, positions a hold then squeezes shut with increasing force like a channel-lock pliers. Experiments to see how long they can maintain full pressure, how they kill and what techniques they use in nature would be interesting. Joseph the Minkman trains mink to kill rats and they are brutally efficient.
