Natural World: Weasels - Feisty & Fearless
Members of the weasel family are often portrayed as the villains of the natural world, but do they deserve this reputation? By following the adventures of a tiny orphaned weasel named Twiz, this film reveals the true nature of these pocket-sized predators, which relative to their size have a bite more powerful than a tiger's. In Yorkshire, a unique garden rigged with over 50 cameras gives a rare insight into the dramatic life of a mother stoat as she tries to raise her first family. And new science uncovers the problem-solving abilities of the honey badger, the secrets behind the ferret's legendary flexibility, and the remarkable sense of smell of the wolverine. Together, using their extraordinary skills, this feisty and fearless family have conquered the planet.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

Ferocious!

"The most ferocious predator on the planet." Proceeds to show the most adorable footage of the little weasel.
Lol makes me think of when honey badgers were a huge meme. Like k it's fierce and all but I can still bootfck it into next fiscal year
Yeah if they where size of a dog oooo boy not fun.
Watched the vid expecting amusing weasel hijinks.....will now never trust a mustalid (sp?) again.
💯
@@johnr797
Yeah, I think its a bit more tricky than that. You can definitely kill it with you bare hands, but theyre fast. You wouldnt come out of that without some gnarly bites and scratches.
"Imagine what it would be like to be chased by one of these fearsome predators" 4:05 makes the cutest noise known to man
yeah, makes a cutesy noise just before sinking his teeth into your brain and then eating your brain.
@@timlabeaux8123 its the size of a fucking pencil
@@stanferrets3827 yeah well if you are the size of a mouse you'd be terrified.
That was my favorite part it was cute and ironic! X3
Years ago, my dad ran a restaurant in the middle of the city, and it became clear that they had a serious rat problem. After filling the place with traps and sealing off every single way into the kitchen bar one door (including the fire escape at the owner's insistence), they realised that they had to be coming up from beneath the floor somehow. So they hired a ratcatcher, who came in with a single ferret with a bell attached to its collar so he'd be able to hear it if it didn't come back up. Long story short, ferret disappeared and the guy, presuming it had gone into the sewer and drowned or gotten stuck somehow, refused to send another down. However, they started seeing far less evidence of rats. Months later, the staff could on occasion still hear the sound of a very faint bell from under the tiles. They'd leave meat out to try and coax it back up but evidently it was having its fill of rats down there, because it never did.
It found what we call heaven but underground
Such a silly idea. When a ferret disappears to an interesting spot it's never coming back lol! They're not like dogs; they don't care about loyalty.
Lmao that’s awesome they got a free pest control bro for life
@@murph_mustela Apparently it used to be a very common pest control technique. The ferrets were trained, they weren't just hoping they'd come back on their own initiative. I suppose the story shows that in some cases, you're right, they really don't give much of a damn.
I used to watch this CZcams channel who had minks or weasels and would go clear out peoples barns for them it was insane how trained they were and how they attack
4:05 truly terrifying
Lol
Wait till it bites your foot
what i see: floofy noodle
what prey sees: the last thing they ever see
True
An important thing to consider: Ferrets are a domesticated species of weasel and intentionally have weaker bites than their relatives so they should chase prey out of their holes instead of killing them within. So if you've been bit by a ferret, just imagine how much worse the other mustelids are.
Animals in the Mustelidae (Mustelids) family are some of the most ferocious predators. Examples are Badgers especially they Honey Badger, Wolverines, Martens, Stoats, Minks, Otters, Fishers, Ferrets, Weasels, and Pole Cats.
As someone who's been bit by a weasel and is now missing a bit of my finger, can confirm you *do not* want to get bit by a weasel...
I love you so MUCH! Ma got a piece of her finger chopped off working in a factory (making barrels) at war time! I can imagine it's the same pain! 💓
Did you explode in a shower of dry bone particles? (Answer carefully because this whole video is a massive disappointment if not)
@@joechapman8208
I love you so MUCH! 😄💓
@@SOULRELIEF22 Love to you too :)
@@joechapman8208
🙏🙌💓
Having owned, raised, bred, and owned a ferret association in the past, I can confirm they have a powerful bite.
But it is completely hilarious when a ferret gently takes your finger in its mouth and trys to drag you under the couch because it thinks you are one of its kits.
🤣
Or grabs your sneaker and tries to drag that under the couch.....while you are still wearing it 😂
Carpet sharks are better entertainment than tv, for sure ♥️
True about Weasel: czcams.com/video/x321iHjHOnQ/video.html
I love ferrets, and cannot tell you how happy I am to see more videos on BBC Earth about weasels and other mustelids!
Ok ngl, the idea of a tiger sized weasel is legit terrifying.
There used to be a gigantic non aquatic otter (otters and weasels are in the same family) it was about 7 feet long and 4.5 ft tall. They weighed 450lbs and lived 3 million years ago. It ate anything it wanted, including early humans logically
What a ferocious, yet adorable predator! :D
Kind of disappointing how few weasels we see compared to how many nuclear rat traps we see triggered.
A weasel jaw doesn't snap shut under full tension like a trap either, it nibbles around, positions a hold then squeezes shut with increasing force like a channel-lock pliers. Experiments to see how long they can maintain full pressure, how they kill and what techniques they use in nature would be interesting. Joseph the Minkman trains mink to kill rats and they are brutally efficient.
"How would you like to be chased by one of these fearsome predators?"
Shows is frolicking through the forest looking like the cutest thing we have ever seen. UwU
I dont know if BBC was trying to be ironic but that scary "fearsome Apex predator" clip of that weasel at the end was so cute.
4:05
Humans: Aw that's so adorable!!!
Small animals: OH M-.....
Interesting (4:10) just like cats, Weasels can automatically twist their spines mid-air in order to land on their little feet.
50% of the video: Footage of weasels and their impressive bite force
The other 50%: _Slomo mousetrap_
You think he just saved a bunch of chicken bones from dinner and cleaned them up, or were those specifically sourced for science?
Due to square/cube law it’s easy for small creatures to be strong for their weight.
ikr. Imagine an ant the size of a bear or a tiger " HOLY SHIT GUYS I JUST DISCOVERED THAT ANTS HAVE THE STRONGEST BITEFORCE IN THE WORLD"! Yeah right, and you could say this about any small animal...
@@a1g0t070 exactly
Species of Mustelidae family are just amazing!
*Squeaks cutely, yet demonicly.*
My mom was right, I guess my uncle did have a few positive traits. My dad always called him a dirty weasel.
Lol 🤣
Was he a sneaky little bastard too?
Fun fact: the only mammal with a faster metabolism is your average shrew, consuming its own body weight every two hours or risk death.
Not true. According to Wikipedia half to two times body weight per day. Certainly not twelve. And it’s not “or risk death”, but “or die”. Risk does not enter into it.
Omg who is a adorable lil murder fuzzy noodle😍 did you all hear his or her roar🤣 so damn precious 😖I can't even😂
Too much use of emojis
what can you not?
Watching this after a weasel emerged from under my cabin and stared at me for 3 seconds and then ran off lmao.
It also has a really big brain case as a ratio both to the skull overall, and to the animal's body overall.
Yes, they're pretty smart
Having owned ferrets & especially , polecats , I can attest to the power of Genus Mustela bite force , with scars as reminders. My girls were excellent & savage ratters , miss them so much. Love this footage of the smallest , but most powerful for size , mammalian carnivore
Robert fuller has amazing work on stoats/weasels.
4:06 was the most adorable "I'm gonna kill you" ever...
The end was just amazing. Cutest squeaker with a furry belly leaping on things.
A zoologist told me that the lesser weasel's jaws run like a sewing machine, and if it weighed 60lbs nothing on earth would exist.
So cute though.
Giant otters look them up. Apex predators of south america
My ex has the most powerful bite force in the world. She took a chunk out of my wallet that still hasn't healed. 😀
When I first adopted my male ferret, I believe he was miss treated because when I first got him out and held him he clamped down on my thump with intense pressure, blood was rushing down my arm and he was just hanging off my thumb and wouldn’t let go. I had to flick him in the nose to make him give up, we now have a very good relationship and I am able to trust him to even lick me on the face without worrying about him crunching down on my nose or lip
"Tasmanian Devil" - Hold my beer, I'm #1 in this category
One main difference though is that Tasmanian Devil's are not predators.
I wish there were far more documentaries on the entirety of mustelid. Even then the north american badger would probably get less screen time. They are amazing in so many ways.
There are really cute dance moves 😍😍
This thing is so feral where I live. It kills fowls and poultry.
Congratulations for 10 Million 🤩🤩🤩🎉🎉🎉🎉
Next time someone calls you a weasel, you say “damn right”
Can confirm. Having to rehome a ferret because he wouldn't stop demonstrating. Not sure my hands will ever be the same.
Stories to tell to the god kids: oh yes before your daddy and I used to go on a Tyrannosaur hunt, we had to do a clearing patrol with bazookas to make sure we did not get gobbled up by a Big Bad Weasel. True story.
I Always imagined we were doomed If a weasel or any member of the mustelidae Family would get as big as a big Cat.
Just Take a Look at the Wolverine
Watched a documentary on the stoat, narrator said if they had evolved to weigh 60 pounds or more, no other land animal would be alive today...
@@swampmonster8626 Basically a furry Terminator. Kept ferrets & polecats ...they can bite ...& their strength is phenomenal, esp poleys.
Super predator: "sqweeee!"
“Imagine what it would be like to be chased by one of these fearsome predators.” *squeak, squeak!!! I would love to be chased by him 🥺🤗
weasel, ferret, stoat, mink, badger, wolverine, all part of the weasel family and all formidable.
The cutest harbinger of death I've ever seen...😂
Theyre on standby as a yessir cover as the kangaroo and weasel are the same as they all have the same 77 ears
I’d highly recommend the book Kine By A.R Lloyd. Great piece of fiction detailing a weasels fight against a sinister tribe of Mink.
Woah cool, thank you so much. I love weasels!
Such a gorgeous end credit screen.
I came here because I couldn’t find any info on a ferret’s recorded bite force and I was curious about mine, and this is pretty accurate for them. Thankfully she doesn’t use all of her strength.
gotta love the stoats
Well this great to learn that Weasel, have the "most powerful bite",also cause this show is great too
Wow!
I did not know that!
Amazing the feisty weasel, right?
Taking note, no kidding.
Wolverine, and Honey Badger left the room.😆
Perfect example for don't judge a person by his looks.
This isn't fair, I didn't know this was a job when I was a kid. I wish I could tell my 6-year-old self, dude you want to be an animal bite scientist. I would definitely know what I mean and would be so excited.
A BBC produziu vídeo tão incrível e pormenorizado... que nos deixa espantados com o poder desta espécie tão linda pequena, poderosa e predadora!! Fantástico...lá está os poderes dos animais não se medem aos palmos de tamanho!!
He attac,
but he also protec.

a weasel the size of a tiger would be scary. dire weasel
🎶Weasel stomping day!🎶
WHY DOES IT SCREAM LIKE THAT
a pet ferret has enough bite force to crush a finger.
Very very outstanding presentation

Congrats for 100k biggest family 🥳🥳🥳
this guy customizes mouse traps and uses them to destroy the bones from his buffalo wings.
I too welcome our new weasel Overlords!
It's so cute though!!! 😆💕
chase you say? a scaled up weasel chasing you would have fun running on its front legs just to give you a tiny chance.
Learned something new there 👍🏻
Amazing 👍
Moral of the video ; ....get a weasel for security 🤔
Whoever did the audio on this video should be handed a mop
Never been bitten by a weasel but I've owned ferrets in the past and yea it hurts like hell when they bite ... and don't let go.
Someone once wrote, we are lucky weasels are not the size of wolfs.
AWESOME!!!
Good job on 10 million
Weasel went flex mode : 4:05 - 4:15
"As a force disperses across a surface, the pressure at each individual point is shared around. Concentrate all of that force into a smaller area, and the pressure becomes much greater.
So you're telling me sharp teeth hurt
Nice try… but whatever you say, weasels will always look like little fur noodles.
If the bone is not dried it won't get broken like this .
One of my cats brought a young weasel into the house. I managed to rescue it but it wasn't very pleased with me and I kept well clear of its mouth.
Need more weasel
I wonder how a wolverine would stand up considering they're the largest of the weasel family.
WOOZLES!
Now I know how Weasel killed so many kids. Yikes.
Weasels Ripped my Flesh
good experiment!
Tassie devils have the ultimate bite
4:01 YOU DIED
Very good
Too bad reality can't scale like that. Those long and thin teeth would snap pretty easily. Still cool as hell knowing it's so strong pound for pound
Most adorable murderer
Thanks.... now i cant sleep at night.
I have one on my garden its killed several birds ,and frogs ,but has a sweet face.
