- Here's my first attempt at a "driftwood" rearing horse sculpture (actually more like reclaimed wood). I used the CNC machine to help me cut out patterns to help guide and speed up the process.

Thank you for your inspiration I'm just starting out at 65, I will get back to you when I'm 80.
Use a dab of LEXEL adhesive on the underside of the small pieces which are covering up the "mistakes) aka screws and joints. Hot glue won't hold and it does turn cloudy and fall off eventually. Lexel withstands all temperatures and outdoor conditions and remains flexible so when the wood shrinks and expands, the little wood will stay put. I then secure the small pieces with an outdoor rated panel nail. Between the adhesive and the panel nail I've never had anything I made fall apart yet after 6 years outside.

I saw a full size mare and foal sculpture of driftwood like this about 20yrs ago. It was an open air art display in Salisbury UK. The most impactful work of art I have ever seen.

Amazing loving gift! Just beautiful. The only thing I’d do differently is use a power paint sprayer to thoroughly apply something like Thompson’s water sealer all over the horse to completely protect every bit of it, then do it again regularly to prevent it from decaying.

I love that horse! Could you make something similar by sand blasting wood scrapped trees and branches to get that old driftwood feel?
Hi Jimmer, interesting idea, I'm not sure but if you try that let me know how it works out! I think the best woods to use are dried/dead hardwoods that haven't succumbed to rotting.

I have seen onlu 1 sculpture. It is at the entrance of the SENIOR CENTER in Sandy Utah
Its protected under the canopy, I had no idea how to begin yo make one. Will start with a table top model. I have horses everywhere. Last year my Christmas tree was a salute to all my plastic toy models and some several feet high

That was great...how you assembled piece by piece..the upper part was great..it is just an observation had it been the butt been less broad would have been better.. somehow due to bottom parts give a delusion of a dinosaur standing..I hope you won't mind just shared my observation.. please don't judge..but it was great learning..thanks a lot.
For years I've wanted to build a horse. At first, I wanted rusty metal. But the house you have built is so much superior. And you have helped me understand that it is much more complex than I originally thought. I'm not giving up just getting prepared. Can you tell me what a CNC machine is and what attachments I need?
That's great Elaine, looking forward to seeing what you come up with. For this project a CNC machine is only a "nice to have". All it did was help me figure out the proportions a little faster by helping me build the frame of the horse. You could just as easily build your frame the old fashioned way by manually fixing pieces of wood together and eyeballing the result. If you ever do get into CNC, its a really fun and rewarding hobby. CNC stands for "computer numerical control" and is basically any machine (most commonly with 3-axis movement) that cuts precise shapes out of a medium based on instructions from a computer. CNC machines come in all shapes and sizes and it really depends on how much you think you're going to use it. Good luck!

I don't have a computer for the print out. Do you recommend any stores that can do this for me as far as the print out goes?
What kind of saw is that..that u used for cutting the pattern out?
One more question.. I have not made a sculpture as large as yours, so I use smaller driftwood that I get from the beach here is Texas. If nails and scres are tearing my wood up, would you suggest using a glue gun to hold it all together?
I wouldn't recommend hot glue for anything structural, over time there is a risk of the bond detaching especially if kept outdoors. You can probably get away with it if it's a much smaller sculpture (desk size) and kept indoors. You could use the glue to hold things in place for you and THEN screw/nail so the glue acts like more of a 'clamp' since it dries almost instantly. Also the glue could act almost like a mortar and fill in gaps between joints so there's less play where you connect the wood. Let us know what you come up with :)
How heavy were the largest pieces you used❓ .....I think thats the question I need to ask. I have five pieces of grapewood root that are twisty. It took me about 6mo to figure out how I wanted them put together, to hang on the wall as a sculpture.
Problem is each piece is fairly heavy. I bought them as "driftwood" but I can tell they are sandblasted. (because of the weight and obviously the texture)
I'm wondering if screws will be enough? I mean I guess they would as long as I use enough?
Its called down timber. Its wood that has fallen out or fallen down. Of trees.

You should spray it real good with 2 or 3 or more coats Thompson water seal and it will last forever if you do that
WOW, I learned a lot. I was using wood screws for my Rhino.. it was tearing up the wood. So I started using nails.. and I do use super glue but a lot of my nails are exposed so I like the idea of the little pieces to cover up. My toughest thing is when I start and where to start to keep the darn frame standing. I love using the FRAME, but I do not own one of those nice machines you have to cut it out for me... Any suggestions?
That's great Linda, it may take a little longer but you could always pre-drill your holes before screwing so the wood doesn't split. The CNC machine is nice to have but you could improvise a frame out of almost anything since it will be hidden. The easiest might be scrap wood or strong branches to get the approximate/rough shape, reinforce it with screws or even wrapped twine, wire, or coat hanger. Then keep adding your driftwood on top of the frame until it's hidden. Another option could be drawing your design on a large piece of plywood and manually cutting it out with a jigsaw. A lot of professionals weld up steel frames for more permanent displays. Another idea could be to hang your main structural body piece (think of it like a spine) from the ceiling and build on to that while it hangs so you don't have to be concerned with the legs/feet holding it up at first. I hope that helps, good luck!

@@shareahack I have begun collecting wood as my lake is LOW and we had much debris go through, dam to dam last summer...next will dry and clean...then create! I am so excited to get started on fastening together my very 1st piece! I don't have a huge supply of wood, But I wanted to practice on a small scale 1st may be a water bird... Any suggestions on getting started?🤔🕺⏳
@@kimm.-e.4963 That's great to hear Kim :) For smaller scale, maybe try to build the core structure with thick branches and then 'fill out' the rest of the body with various driftwood. Also if smaller, you might be able to get away with metail wire or tiny brad nails to connect all the pieces (you may need an air compressor and brad nailer handy). Can't wait to see what you come up with!
What have you done with the worms and ants in the wood? Aren't dangerous for the whole structure?
Once the wood is out of the ground they simply vacate the pieces and move somewhere new...Some users have suggested soaking the wood in a diluted bleach solution and then drying them out. Also the stain makes the wood pretty inhospitable to critters.

Use a metal frame and glue driftwood on the outsideif you’re gonna do it this way. …Fuckit, just cut out wood and age it for the “perfect piece” lol (it DOES LOOK cool, but just don’t find it nearly as cool as a 100% created organically from only driftwood pieces would be)
Kind of a cheat way like tracing a picture instead of freehand drawing…. But I guess ifyou don’t care the end is the same result
