Big boy just came through town. i didn't know it was coming, but i live two streets away from a massive rail yard, and i HEARD it come in. i was SURE that was the sound of a steam locomotive coming in. my 3 year old so (who loves trains) and i chased it for several towns unsuccessfully only to find out it was in town for two days. i took him to see it and the first thing he said was "daddy, thats a steam locomotive!" good boy! when it left I woke up to the sound of its howling whistle for a half an hour. best wakeup call ever...
WOW BEAUTIFUL I TOOK A PICTURE OF A BRAND NEW CSX IT WAS BEAUTIFUL BLUE AND YELLOW COMING DOWN THE TRACK JUST FOR ME. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR AWESOME VIDEO.
I remember as a little boy getting on the steam engines with my dad who was an engineer between El Paso and and Toyah , Texas. I even had special RR overalls shirt, cap and even the black arm covers for protection. Years later I followed in his footsteps and worked beside him as a switchman, brakeman and conductor. For the next 33 years I worked from El Paso to Texarkana,Texas on the (Texas and Pacific RR,Missouri pacific) and now the great Union Pacific. Even though I’ve been retired almost 20 years I still live near the the tracks and still listen to the trains go by with pride.
Cornell Green that’s really so true. I’ve even got a head lite off an old wreaked steam engine my dad helped clean up and a seat out of an old caboose Thanks for your comments.
I fully agree ! We here in old Germany got some hugh steam engines called ,, Kriegslokomotive,, = Engine model 50 , around 2000 horsepower, built during World War II to get the ,,Tiger Panzers,, ( tanks model Tiger) to the front. However, not comparable with this monster in your video, that US locomotive is the biggest thing I' ve ever seen ! Looks like minimum 3000 horsepowers and most probably it can pull 100 cargo waggons. Diameter of only 3 driving wheels is relatively small, means designed for high speed but on flat countryside only ( the model 50 here got also only 3 drive wheels but ca. 2m diameter for climbing mountains ( for example 2500m high swiss alpine mountains = Gotthard pass to Switzerland). Some railroad enthusiasts keep civil version model BR1 and very few model 50, hard time finanzing it because of excessive inspection/ approval costs because it is a pressure vessel. In your country may be same problem regarding ASME certificate. Let's cross our fingers and hope, these monuments will survive !!!

More steam trains need to be put back into service for short and cross country travel. If I had my way, all working steam trains would be. I would also have all of the forgotten, abandoned steam, EMD diesels and other rare trains found, restored and put back into service. More people today need to experience what it was like to travel back in the hey day of steam and early diesel trains.
What did in the steam was the maintenance costs. Maintaining a boiler in safe operating order is a lot of work, and a steam locomotive requires far more maintenance to both itself and the track it runs on than the diesels that replaced them. In revenue service, the boilers were fired 24/7 except when preparing for maintenance. Every 3 months it would shut down to be cleaned inside and out, the work done wearing asbestos suits while the boiler was still as much as 140F inside. Then it would be filled with hot water from the roundhouse steam plant and fired again for another 3 months on the road, unless issues were found that required a full cooldown and inspect/repair plan. Whereas a diesel, change the oil and filters, run it through the wash once, and back on the road it goes. Total downtime less than half a day.
Geeze, I thought it took so much intelligence for people to stand on the rocks, both sides of rails. Kids running around. the guy in the blue shirt holding camera up-I'm like well he's going to fall. And he slipped forward. Police saying get back. They did-for a moment. Can people get dumber? I didn't know I could hold my breath that long! Now that heart attack aside, That engine was so aweinspiring!
The one that they just finished restoring in Cheyenne Wyoming. If nothing goes wrong it will be sent to special events throughout the UP system for the next 10 years- at which time will need a FRA1462 overhaul to continue in service.
Josh, the train you saw was probably the original as it was sitting on tracks, instead of some type of platform. The one inside was the half model size so people could get up close and personal to really see it. They were huge in their day. Here is one of the Big Boys still running today. For perspective watch for the train service men standing next to it. The train towers over them! you.be/35NtV6abR2w
@@georgeharris6571 The majority of UP's locomotive roster is not equipped with head end power, and the consist used for this event had a dedicated generator car for the purpose. The diesel was there for dynamic brakes, which neither 4014 or 844 can do, and to conserve supplies of fuel and water between events by letting the steamers drift along while the diesel provides a portion of the power to move things.
I am 78 years old. During WWll the lead ore trains ran 24/7 only a few yards from our farm buildings. Never once did I see a diesel engine helping the steam locos. When will 4014 do a days work on her own?
The disel engine is there as a failsafe countermeasure. It's doing none of the pulling power the big boy is doing all of it. It's there for air pressure, electricity and brake failsafe. The cars it's pulling is a mobile workshop, I saw it in West Chicago 3 days ago. Amazing peice of machinery
My wife and I rode steam trains all over the country for several years. These UP steam restorations are the only ones that use a diesel in addition to the steam loco. The narrow gauge locos at Durango Silverton have a small steam turbine for electricity. That allows for modern day communications. But the train still does what it was built for by it self and much steeper grades then the flatlands we have here in Wisc. When Big Boys were in service they hauled very large trains over Sherman Pass unassisted. Having said that I am very thankful that UP has put one of them back in service. Before I lost my wife we were in the cab of the one on display in Green Bay. We both commented how nice it would be if a Big Boy could ride the rails again. ..Arnie
Arnold Alt, Jr. If I am not mistaken, U.P. also has another Big Boy, #3985. 4014 has a higher profile because more people see it more often. Would love to see 3985 together with 844. Let's be thankful that 4014 is not the one and only.
3985 is not a Big Boy. I think all Big Boys numbers began with 4 and were articulated engines. 4014 is the only one in operating condition. There is one on indoor display in Green Bay, Wi at the RR museum. You are allowed in the cab. Also the Eisenhower loco is there along with many other items. A worth while stop.
If I was there, I'd pay some kid $10 to hold my Ipad up in the air and vid the thing while I watched it pull up like a normal person. Who came to see it in person.
And then shed a single tear as the locomotive pulled away. And then a flood of tears as you realized that your $10, your iPad and the kid were long gone.
Its amazing how many people don't realize that the train is wider than the track. If you're on the gravel you are too close. Especially with the Big Boy, when going around the curves the boiler hangs over the outside of the curve a considerable amount. Fortunately low speed moves like this the risk of an accident is fairly low, since people have time to get out of its way.

I wish I was there.
Steam train videos
I assume it's a hot day as no steam appears from the whistle although it is coming from elsewhere on the train.
No, I think it's because the whistles are operated on superheated steam, so you don't see any white clouds. At least, not very often.
