More 4014 & 844: • UP 4014, 844, Frontrun...
I had the amazing opportunity to fly to Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah and see Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 and the Living Legend No. 844. 4014 was restored after a 5 year project for the 150th year of the railroad operating, and was a childhood dream of mine to see in person. 844 is the longest running steam locomotive, never being officially retired from service since it was first introduced to the railroad.
This was filmed on May 10th, 2019 in Ogden, exactly 150 years after the Great Race between the Central Pacific from the West, and the Union Pacific from the East, met at Promontory Point, Utah.

Love these old steam locomotives, they are a thing of beauty. And their complexity is a testament to human ingenuity. It's amazing to think that we went from the ancient Greek engineer Heron creating a steam engine or as it was called a Aeolipilae over 1000 years ago to these steel behemoths belching smoke as they thundered across the land. While I have ridden on modern bullet trains in Japan with their quiet and smooth ride there is still something about these old trains that new trains cant recreate, it's that rhythmic sound of the engine, and the click clack as the train rolls down the rails. Steam locomotives helped build this great nation and many other nations around the world, they are part of our shared history and should be preserved for future generations.
It's Hero, not Heron.
They are neat machines but way outdated. These were even outdated when built in the 40’s
The Big Boy always speaks when the whistles blows. He is truly a living entity. I love this Train.
I agree.
Me too
Man those whistles make the hair on the back of my neck stand up!
What a beast! Great to see such a symbolically important locomotive in steam again. Hope it will inspire more.
1mill tons latter
the complexity of this thing.............i mean how the hell did someone even start drawing the blueprints for it ?
Coffee lots and lots of coffee
Angry Welshman UP Challenger. That’s how they got started.
Design is simply seeing something that does not exist,....yet. Some brains have that quirky ability. A smaller number of these quirky brains have the ability to see such non-existent machinery moving and operating in three dimensions, long before the pencil hits the paper. These brains can see it from any angle and can make instantaneous (virtual) changes to individual parts, refining its operation. Drawing the final version on paper (or AutoCAD) is just a tedious drudgery to such an impatient, quirky mind.
My short term memory sucks. I can't visualize two dimensional letters and suck at spelling. My long term memory is incredibly crisp though, even decades later. I'm impatient. I also have one of these quirky brains, described above. It's in my DNA. My paternal side of my family includes many inventors, including Lorenzo Langstroth (Father of Modern Beekeeping). On my mother's side, there are many inventors, including Glenn Curtiss (arch rival of the Wright Brothers).
Superb, so nostalgic, quite marvellous. 👍👍👍🇬🇧
Truly one of the Wonders of our World! Oh, to take a cab ride in it...breathtaking!
Die Sopfbuchse vorne am linken Zylinder ist gans schön undicht, mich wundert das mann so weiter fährt. 😎
Alfi Alfi Das hat mich auch überrascht!
Weiß doch kein Mensch, Schnauze jetzt halten und einfach weiter machen, verstanden ?

Gaylene Morley Did 844 go in for it’s overhaul?
Gaylene Morley what happened to 844?
WHAT A BEAUTY! I've got a riverrossi H.O replica of number 4005, i like to run it light engined on me o.o scale track blasting threw the english country side pretending to be going from london padding down to torquey devon( i'm a limey) it dwarfs the big stations. The real thing is truly a contender to be the one of the 7th wonders of the modern world👍
Very fine photographing.
THE WHISTLE IS JUST BEAUTIFUL
Spurntine , absolutely awesome , I'm a diesel man but this is raw power 😝

Od dětství milují parní mašinky. V Brně v Československé republice jezdily. Bylo to úžasné ❤
ano, parní vlaky jsou úžasné! Děkuji :)
24" pistons producing over 6,000 HP that could pull a freight train 5 miles long up a mountain grade.
Um... no. Maybe 1 mile.
A five mile train up the steepest grade at a speed of thirty or so miles an hour
I know it can pull a 5 and a half mile train on the flat.
they dont need engine for more than 50car train on curve down track..
Big Boy could pull a 5 1/2 mile long train on level or flat track not up a grade though. However Big Boy could and would muscle trains over 100 cars long over the Wasatch Mountains and Sherman Hill (track 3) unassisted. After the Harriman cut-off (track 3) was built Big Boy was rated for 6,000 tons (unassisted) over the new line of Sherman Hill ( Union Pacific would keep tonnage between 4800 and 5800 tons to ensure faster running times)
Magnificent.... what a wonderful machine!!!
Wow! The Big Boy, It is a beautiful loc
The old train is very good . It is recovered For travel and passenger , very interesting and beautifull.
A symphony for train lovers to be sure.
Yes... It's alive. Magnificent!
They both look brand new!
Both were rebuilt to such a level, particularly 4014, they pretty much are!
Un véritable bijou cette locomotive.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Beautiful!!!!!
Wow I saw this in St Paul Minnesota last summer before the coronavirus pandemic
Fajnie, że znowu jeździ😊.
I happen to help with the event back in 2019 at union station. Ogden utah yup
That’s loud enough to be a Ship Whistle!
Well, they aren't called steamboat whistles for nothing. Good Ole Hancock 3-Chime Longbell
Those turbine generators make a racket!
Beautiful.
Truly a beast.
Thumbs Up liked, Merry Christmas to you also.
Big Boy 🚂... Lovely ❤❤❤

Only two words come to mind... MAJESTIC FURY!
Jestem zakochany w parowozach
It is more complex and bigger than the international space station!
火車氣氛濃厚!👍🔥

Lembrança da minha infância. C.P
A real IRON HORSE.
BIG BOY 4014 AND UP 844 HO WOW THAT WELL TRAIN BIG BOY 4014! TRAIN
844 makes a great companion for 4014 . Wales UK.
PERFECTLY!!!
I enjoy 844 engine ghostly whistle. I help at that 150 aniversary in ogden utah may 2019 yup
American magic muscle. Epitome of an era gone by. Bring them back. And I'm a kiwi. Is there any other 4.8.4 big boys still breathing out there? When I hear the whistle, it reminds me of a giant crying out to be let loose again. A forlorn sound, a forsaken and sad sound. Will this excursion be a regular thing?
There are other static displays, but 4014 is currently the only operational Big Boy.
Big Boy is a 4-8-8-4, the 844 is a 4-8-4. Personally I would love to see the Challenger as well as the 2-6-6-2 Alleghany running again as well. God Bless the UP and other railroads that have restored these relics of American Invention and Industry at their own cost, just to get them back out and running. We must never forget our past.
magnificent beast , but what a maintenance night mare, I worked as an electrician on the C&W RR
My home town Ogden Utah is so cool but not the half the people there.💯💯💯💯
Right here in my hometown
Awe-inspiring!
Engineering at it's best
Impresionante maquina
I would love to have a smaller version of the 844 steam locomotive
So it's like two locomotives fused to be one. Impressive train 🚂. Love the mountain view background. Put usa flag 🇺🇸 on the front, it'll look amazing.
Is it me or is it missing the original Alco name plate on the loco??
Mr. Fix It yeah, you’re absolutely right! I didn’t notice that, but you can see the outline where it’s supposed to be.
Yeah they said it'll be attached soon, not to worry
is it just me or did number 844 started to sound like challenger 3985
amayzin power!!!
You think modern fighter jets are complicated, look at this beautiful monster
Он сложней и больше, чем международная космическая станция!
O apito dela, parece um dinossauro berrando faminto...da série " Elo Perdido" rsrsrs... linda
you got the same background noise I got on my, I did not even noticed my until I was @home
When did the modern diesel locomotives come into existence? And when did the coal powered locomotives retired?
Raymond Bermudez I believe the “transition era” of railroading happened in the 1950’s. It wasn’t an overnight thing, as steam was phased out over the course of a decade or two
Daniel Zombori
Thank you 🙏 Daniel for the information it helped a great deal and I will be subscribing
The EMD E7's came into existence in the late 1920's. I believe those were the first prominent Diesels, to start the transition. The bulk of steam locomotives were phased out by the end of the 1950's.
Para su antigüedad que tiene fue muy rápida y fuerte en sus tiempos bueno sigue siendo
Shes looking good boys
Big Boy.
Красотища!!!
Алексей Е спасибо!
sounds like 4014 is a little under pressure not enough steam to give a big enough blast of the whistle ? or maybe it's just the video?
MrHondanut100 probably just my microphone, was using the built in mic of my camera..
¡artística!
Nikad ne zaboravljene uvijek su išle
How old is 4014 ? Asfar as I understand this train/machines was brought back to life after an inactive period. Is that true ? Many thanks, JAL, from Brazil, South America.

Александр Ногин Хвала!
Still think we need 1218 back to go with it
Eles são mai esperto empurraram as elétricas em nós e ficaram com as econômicas.
Could somebody please explain that long *bicycle chain* on the leading running gear??? When they were towing it to shop years ago, I thought maybe it was just temporary rig to get it going. Now I see it is a *permanent* part of the running gear. - 0:21 , 1:10 , 2:05
JungleYT I’m curious about that too, I don’t think 3985 had one...
It is a part of the auto lubrication system
@@AlbertaTrackside OK, Thanks!
That drives part of the oiler system.
@@DanielZombori It drives the front set of force feed lubricators. That system was unique to the 4000s
Hopefully, they fix the leaks in the cylinders
O
Young Drummer they need the so called leaks so the engine doesn’t get ruined with a build up of water in the cylinders ,, it’s call blowing off the cylinders once the engine is on the way they are shut off
Dang it. Didn't know it was in ogden.
The Guy it was there near the beginning of May 2019!
I have heard 4014 is coming back again t o ogden ut i hope 844 comes too.
🇺🇸💪🏻
wow
Klasse Video, danke fürs Reinstellen, from Germany.
They haven’t repaired the leaking front piston
Que apito forte
I'm sure if dinosaurs ever made a noise it would sound like that. It brings up the hairs on your neck!

does it have an e-bell now, i don't see the bell moving
The Creative One from what I know, I don’t believe the bell itself has ever moved, but the striker inside the bell is powered to move by air!
Correct, only the striker moved, the bell is stationary.
ISTO É UMA CALDEIRA.A VAPOR NA HORIZONTAL
Are the smaller version of the 1225 polar express
I wish some neat up driver would give rides for 50 from ogden to slc soon on 844 pulling
The rides in the passenger cars range from $3,000-5,000 dollars
so why is the front of the engine so dull and the rest so shiny?
They hit a lot of bugs out west.
What's the top speed on this BadBoy !!?
The bad boy tops out at 78 mph I think.
What loco u on at the end?
Mini
think those machine were developed with pencil and paper.............
That whistle still doesn't sound right to flat.
Depends on the position
Here's a video of 844s whistle position czcams.com/video/BQQGKX5Ncx4/video.html skip to 1:16

Why this yellow Waggon between the Big Black Dinos?
Live Long and Prosper those act as extra water tanks!
@@DanielZombori Thanks for the Info. Than they have to paint it black. Yellow between black looks weird.
@@livelongandprosper169 black is the fuel bunker, and yellow is the water bunker.
