    More 4014 & 844: • UP 4014, 844, Frontrun...
I had the amazing opportunity to fly to Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah and see Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 and the Living Legend No. 844. 4014 was restored after a 5 year project for the 150th year of the railroad operating, and was a childhood dream of mine to see in person. 844 is the longest running steam locomotive, never being officially retired from service since it was first introduced to the railroad.
This was filmed on May 10th, 2019 in Ogden, exactly 150 years after the Great Race between the Central Pacific from the West, and the Union Pacific from the East, met at Promontory Point, Utah.

Love these old steam locomotives, they are a thing of beauty. And their complexity is a testament to human ingenuity. It's amazing to think that we went from the ancient Greek engineer Heron creating a steam engine or as it was called a Aeolipilae over 1000 years ago to these steel behemoths belching smoke as they thundered across the land. While I have ridden on modern bullet trains in Japan with their quiet and smooth ride there is still something about these old trains that new trains cant recreate, it's that rhythmic sound of the engine, and the click clack as the train rolls down the rails. Steam locomotives helped build this great nation and many other nations around the world, they are part of our shared history and should be preserved for future generations.

Design is simply seeing something that does not exist,....yet. Some brains have that quirky ability. A smaller number of these quirky brains have the ability to see such non-existent machinery moving and operating in three dimensions, long before the pencil hits the paper. These brains can see it from any angle and can make instantaneous (virtual) changes to individual parts, refining its operation. Drawing the final version on paper (or AutoCAD) is just a tedious drudgery to such an impatient, quirky mind.
My short term memory sucks. I can't visualize two dimensional letters and suck at spelling. My long term memory is incredibly crisp though, even decades later. I'm impatient. I also have one of these quirky brains, described above. It's in my DNA. My paternal side of my family includes many inventors, including Lorenzo Langstroth (Father of Modern Beekeeping). On my mother's side, there are many inventors, including Glenn Curtiss (arch rival of the Wright Brothers).

I've got a riverrossi H.O replica of number 4005, i like to run it light engined on me o.o scale track blasting threw the english country side pretending to be going from london padding down to torquey devon( i'm a limey) it dwarfs the big stations. Big Boy could pull a 5 1/2 mile long train on level or flat track not up a grade though. However Big Boy could and would muscle trains over 100 cars long over the Wasatch Mountains and Sherman Hill (track 3) unassisted. After the Harriman cut-off (track 3) was built Big Boy was rated for 6,000 tons (unassisted) over the new line of Sherman Hill ( Union Pacific would keep tonnage between 4800 and 5800 tons to ensure faster running times)

American magic muscle. Epitome of an era gone by. Bring them back. And I'm a kiwi. Is there any other 4.8.4 big boys still breathing out there? When I hear the whistle, it reminds me of a giant crying out to be let loose again. A forlorn sound, a forsaken and sad sound. Will this excursion be a regular thing?

God Bless the UP and other railroads that have restored these relics of American Invention and Industry at their own cost, just to get them back out and running. We must never forget our past.
