HIKING IN SERBIA - Adventures across villages and the Stara Planina mountains

  • Arriving in Serbia on November 22nd meant discovering the country during the wet season when the days are almost the shortest of the year. Honestly, we did not put all the chances on the side of Serbia to seduce us. Gray sky, plucked trees, night at 4:30 PM and mud from beginning to end... But you know us, we decided to make the most out of it anyway!
    The beautiful Rosomac canyon, near Slavinja, has been a great surprise. The huge lake Zavojsko was a bit depopulated but we enjoyed our quiet night on its shore. Climbing the Babin Zub mountain definitely worth the effort, especially because of the incredible view we got from up there. The last natural highlight we got to see is the Vodopad Bigar; this succession of waterfalls and ponds in the bed of a river.
    In Serbia, the situation is the same as in the rest of Europe: abandoned houses, dying villages and large cities overflowing, but our efforts paid and we got to make great encounters anyway!

      When you travel on foot, you have to make choices! And we were running a bit out of time to cross the Stara Planina in Bulgaria not too late in winter. Which places would you recommend ?

    Yes, very sad story about all villages in my country! I’m hiker to, and I spend a lot of time in mountains of Serbia. We figjt for every inch of that ground, but dictator Vucic are selling our country and our kids leaving the country. We have a lot of beauty here.
    If you eva back in Sebia check the Tara Mountain also and Zaovine lake on the mountain. 🙂
    Bdw, soooo nice video. Tnx for sharing that beauty. 🙏🏻

      Thank you so much for those words. We left Serbia feeling like there was more to see and maybe it would be more joyful in spring or summer but it has for sure a lot to offer !

    Great video as always! Merci! Serbia is on my bucket list too. :) How well are the hiking paths marked , was it easy to find maps, gpx tracks? Are Serbians tolerant about camping or did you went full "stealth mode" with the tent? Minefields/mines are still something to look after? Any wildlife encounters (bears, wolfs)?

    • @FurtherStories
      @FurtherStories  Před 4 lety +3

      Thank you!! Yes some trails are marked and the online maps gave us all the information we needed. We tried to be discreet when camping as always, just not to annoy anyone but it feels quite open and free.
      I don't think that landmines were ever a problem in Serbia, looking at the maps of the current situation, it seems quite okay 😊

    Unfortunately more and more mountain villages and normal ones (but in a smaller scale) are suffering the same fate as these ones in the vid. No nearby work opportunity, hard access to houses (especially in winter when there's like 2m of snow) and overall bad infrastructure. People are leaving for a better life, not necessarily easier. Can the country do something, fix or help at least? Yes. Do the politicians care or want to help. Wellp.....
