    I saw The Carpenters live in New Jersey about 1974. Karen was no longer drumming; she stood out front and wore a long red dress. I have never heard such a beautifully expressive voice as hers and doubt if I ever will again.
    I remembe I was sitting at my desk at work that Winter of 1983 when news came over the radio that she had collapsed and died. I cried then and I still cry when I hear her recorded voice, especially this song. Rest in Peace, Karen. We'll always love you.

    At age 10 , she was 21 , and I was whooped on Karen , that whooped grew bigger over the next 12 yrs , then at 21 the news left me heartbroken , still I pray the day I leave this earth , and be reacquainted with her heavenly voice. I can listen to her for endless hrs as I drive 18 over 47 states , the calming effect she has on this trucker is beyond what words can explain. When everyone these days seem to be in a driving frenzy to turn their ride into their caskets , Karen so often helps me to keep it all in perspective. Although she left us 31 yrs ago , still she often helps me to find that peace in a mad mad world. The thought of the after life if it exists , makes me wonder if one day , I find her singing in the heavens as heavenly as the day she left us , and it become something to embrace and not fear.

      Good stuff. About listening to Karen while driving "on the road," check out Dave Alvin's "Downey Girl" (it's on CZcams). Written and sung by an aging "alt rocker" who came to appreciate Karen as he matured, and learns to enjoy her "sweet suburban songs" as he drives along the highway "a thousand miles from home." Alvin was from Downey also.

      actually many singers to tout her as both their favorites and a influence, there is a video here on youtube where the list of singers tout her greatness, i love k.d. lang comparing for example her to a "female nat king cole"... allegedly, sinatra said she was the only female he would ever pay money to hear sing, she was the favorite singer of engelbert humperdinck, shania twain, gwen stefani, and more... paul mccartney said she had the greatest female voice in the world when she was alive, john lennon told her, her voice was fabulous", streisand told her she had a 'marvelous instrument"... justin haywood of the moody blues, also like mccartney thought she had the greatest female voice in the world, donna summer loved her, petula clark said she her voice had mystery and had something that she her voice didn't, dionne warwick compared her voice to smoky wood and great that is, so the list goes on and on from other well known singers to today's singers you just have to look for the compliments..

    Karen Carpenter really knew how to sing and perform. In this song, she holds everything in reserve until about the 3:19 mark, then she "lets loose" there for one note. Contextually, it's brilliant, yet so understated.

There are extremely talented individuals working their entire lives and doing amazing things. Streep's been acting for 40 years, same with Dustin Hoffman. Rolling Stones are practically in their 70s and still working! Jeff Beck and Clapton - in their 70s. Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone. All and many others have enormous bodies of work and were at the top of their games for nearly their entire lives.

  • @jezkn
    @jezkn Před 9 lety +28

    I love THIS performance of Superstar - it's about the best there is of her performing this classic on CZcams. She's got a bit of life in her on this ,a bit of 'bounce' - her movement is great and she let's herself go, rather than being stitched up (yeah - in spite of the dress!). Richard is 'up front' with the Wurlitzer - not lurking in the shadows and that's good to see. Love her fringy, glossy black hair on this - almost in her eyes and she's clearly loving singing it - and it SHOWS..
    I've got the very same vintage electric piano here (in storage). Unmistakeable sound.. Magic stuff - magic period, and yeah. .... unrepeatable.

    • @jgwynn370
      @jgwynn370 Před 8 lety

      +jezkn She always looked uncomfortable when she was fronting and not behind the drums. This isn't any exception. Great tune, but she looks wound tight.

    • @jezkn
      @jezkn Před 8 lety

      +J gwynn Completely disagree - I mean the dress doesn't help, which does 'wind her up tight with those 'Mr Spock' shoulders and wraps her up like an Egyptian mummy. But it's a BEAUTIFUL and relaxed performance. Look at the hand movements at 1:06 leading into her starting to bounce around a bit at 1:14 as the rhythm picks up and the telling facial expressions. Then she swops the mike round to the other hand at 1:48 and starts to sway around a bit there. She really OWNS this performance. It's such a moving song and she FEELS that emotion in it here - you can see it in her face, her movement and her voice.Of course she's 'wound up tight' dress-wise because she's got immense body issues going on under that - and she needs to keep it all under wraps but it's still a wonderful performance. One of her best. And without those unrevealing 'Victorian dresses' -' it just wouldn't be Karen would it?Clearly - others here feel the same too. But she's never going to be doing a 'Rhianna' is she? (and would we want her to)

      +J gwynn It had to be this way, because Richard and their manager knew that she was only 5'2" or 5'3", and as the crowds got larger, it was time for her to take a back seat as the band's full-time drummer, and focus more on her vocals, since the drums were obscuring her appearance from the audience. When you are trying to give the audience their money's worth, life in the entertainment industry is a real itch!!!!

    Probably. He did the majority of the arrangements. He is definitely the underrated part of her success since he really understood how to get the most out of her voice.

    There are no singers with the range of Karen Carpenter in this world today, she was the Michael Jordan, and Tom Brady of her profession, once in a lifetime!

    You're just a bit younger than me - I fell in love with this song/voice when I was ten or so. This woman's voice can take you places like none other. I long for the (apparent) days of youth & innocence. I've got a large majority of their songs on my ipod as well.

    Karen was 20 yrs old when she recorded this. This is a clip from a summer replacement music/variety series called "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" which ran from July 6th to Sept 7th 1971. Superstar was released as a single on August 12, 1971. Never intended to be released as a single, it was just an album cut. DJs starting getting requests to play the song. This demand fueled the Carpenters to release it as a single. It reached its peak, #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1971.

    This song is not known, comparing with their other songs. But it gives me such a positive-melancholic and nostalgic feeling. This song was original written by Leon Russell. But Richard rewrote its lyrics for Karen before they released their cover version. "I love you" by Leon means "love" after physical relationship. But "love" by Richard means "being a big fan" of the superstar. I like the lyric version by Carpenters because I can imagine that a girl admires him as a plastic love.
