I just finished reading Little Girl Blue. All Carpenters fans need to read this book. Karen loved needlepoint and made one for Richard that said, "Without RC, there would be no KC". Then in 1993, Richard was preparing to release her on solo album. He called "Itchey" Ramone to get the original artwork and any commemoration that when with the album. After a week, she called Richard back saying she found Karen's commemoration. It read, "To my brother Richard, with love". Richard burst into tears on the phone.

What a gorgeous arrangement. Karen was only 19 when she recorded this. To have that much vocal maturity at such a young age is a testament to her genius.
Throw some good genes in there also, as Richard & Karen were inherently blessed w/ talent. May seem like an anomaly in a way as they were really right out of middle America.
This is what everybody raves about with that incredible voice, a very rare lower-register (Mezzo-Soprano, then Soprano as higher for women singers), and her 3-octave range! I've never heard any woman singer able to hit those powerful lower-notes, and still reach the upper level as she did, and never have since her passing or ever will.
Somewhere buried in earlier long-ago comments on this video, someone paid her the greatest compliment: "Her voice was HD before there was HD." Truer words were never spoken.
This is the song that I heard on top 40 radio in 1969 while baking cookies with my grandma in her kitchen. I was 6 years old, and from that point on I was a ginormous Carpenters fan. I still am today, and I’m pushing 60!
The Beatles would be very proud of you singing this song. Karen you left us to early. I listen to your Awesome Beautiful outstanding Incredible music each day. I miss you 😢 you add incredible value to each of my days with your Golden Impeccable flawless voice of Angel. Rip your music will live for Eternity and all of the planets in the solar system.
Karen actually bumped into John Lennon as she was leaving a restaurant (and he was just arriving). He mentioned to her that she has a great voice. She ran off in tears as she thought he was being sarcastic but he was being deadly serious.
She was 19 when she recorded this well before her problems. This actually shows Richards great arrangement and Karen’s amazing ability to make it come to life.
Karen, I wasn't even born yet when you tragically passed but what a loss. I grew up on your music and still remain obsessed with this song, your voice and the sound of The Carpenters to this day. Now my kids listen to it to :) The Carpenters will always be remembered and never duplicated. Rest easy sweet angel.
+Shane Anthony As do I, both awesome in many different ways! I am so thankful to have these songs available as they are because the music today is slim pickings!
For women singers, could be, but there is Mariah Carey (19 #1's), [or Diana Ross, Supremes] just short of The Beatles with 20 #1s on the Billboard Hot 100 record. But for all, you have Elvis, John and Paul, and George to also compete with that "most recognizable voice in the world." But no doubt Karen is right up there with the others! What an incredible, magnificent talent, in both singing and drum playing! What a loss on Feb. 4, 1983; now 40 years ago! Hard to believe it has been that long.
Joy. Pure joy. I only wish I lived in an alternative universe where Karen were still here. That, I think, is the definition of heaven. I'll see you there KC (I hope). Rest it peace beautiful one. XXOO
I think she was a mezzo, maybe. alto, at the least. she has too much in her higher range to be a contralto. If you want a hear a great contralto, listen to Alice Faye, an actress singer from the 30s-40s
No, she's a contralto, because I can sing note for note with her and I am a tenor. I remember this song in 1969 while in college. I thought then that she had magic... and she did!!
No less a musical giant than Paul McCartney said that Karen was the greatest female vocalist--EVER! He is quoted saying about her, "the best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful and distinctive." Highest praise possible, coming from one of the greatest male singers ever. This song, fittingly a Beatles' classic, released in Oct. 1969, prior to "Close to You," the next year, illustrates perfectly her emotional impact on those who appreciate good pop-rock music. They sold well over 100 million records. Loved you and your most expressive contralto voice ever since I heard "Close to You" (1970), Karen. Nobody has come close to your voice since you shockingly went away the day your heart failed. Karen Carpenter, 32 (Mar. 2, 1950-Feb. 4, 1983). "Think I'm gonna be sad..."
True, but she was also considered one of the best drummers and was awarded such an honor over John Bonham, he of Led Zeppelin fame no less. People forget that she was an amazing musician not just a vocalist. Female drummers who sing and play like Karen have never ever been duplicated. I cannot think of a male who covered drums and lead vocals with such precision and quality for that matter, that is how special she was...
@@songshineoriginalmusic Well -- I'll put Phil Collins in there. He could sing and drum at same time. He didn't do that often though. My two favorite all time talented musicians are Karen and Phil. The two most angelic voices to me in popular music are Jon Anderson and Karen Carpenter. Can you imagine if those two angels made a baby? Wow-- mind blown:)
2023 and still the best way to jumpstart your positive mental health in the morning. She and her brother and their combined talents are truly unmatched and I think she actually sounds something like a special angel sent to bless us for a short time but couldn’t stay away from heaven for too long, he needed her back to lead the heavenly chorus. Dear sweet Karen, I miss you.
Even Paul McCartney said Karen carpenter was the best female singer with unique melodic and distinctive voice And she is my favourite singer 😊 I love her melodic ,cheezy voice
I love The Carpenters. I want to go back to the past to feel this again... I need a ticket to ride...Time machine...If you got one for me..Thanks for sharing.
Love & hate relation...every song she sang was angelic. On the flip side, tears roll out because of all the unhappiness in her life...you can hear it in her voice. Always wanted to see the Carpenters when she was alive. Peer pressure shut that notion down, as my friends were into Alice Cooper & Black Sabbath. So was I, yet to this day if you put me on a deserted island, I'll choose Karen over them!!!
This version and Karen was just incredibly wonderful. I wish she could have really known that and been strong enough to believe in herself and her incredible talent.
Karen had such a rich, melodic, pure, rounded & soothing voice that only comes around once in a million years! She was absolutely one of the best vocalists of our time! So sad she passed at such a young age and (we) missed the lifetime of her greatest potential. RIP sweet, lovely lady! Thankful you left us with music to enjoy.
I grew up on The Carpenters' music. To this day i find myself humming and singing their songs more than any other. Beautiful music, Karen's voice is still one of the greatest female voices ever, and their harmonies still stand out as some of the finest in music. I watched their special on PBS last night.....admittedly it brought tears to my eyes, with tears streaming down my face when it ended. I remember where I was and what I was doing when I learned Karen passed - I sobbed. Such a sad ending to one of music's most unforgettable voices. But I am so very grateful for the hundreds of hours of enjoyment I got from listening to their music and for the songs that are still very much a part of my life each and every day. Thank you Carpenters for sharing your incredible gift from God with us.
As an aspiring musician myself, age 14, I'd been steeped in the Beatles and the entire 60s, early 70s music scene. Then came the Carpenters. I recall hearing her voice for the first time. Regardless of my propensity for rock, I could not help being drawn deeply into her voice. Many years later I'd realize that Richard was the genius that showcased Karen's voice perfectly...choosing the right keys, the right songs, perfect arrangements. It's so sad that she, off all people, could not find happiness.
In recent years, when Richard was asked about the "Ticket To Ride" promo film, he cited it as one of the highlights in their career. Had Karen lived she would've echoed that same sentiment, but, typical of her personality, she would have poked fun of the closeup shots of her mouth!... Love you forever, little drummer girl. Rest easy... ❤ 🌹
This is one of several Beatles' songs (along with "Help" and "Nowhere Man") that the Carpenters did not merely "cover," but made their own. By giving "Ticket to Ride" their own flair, they made it as much as standard for themselves as it had been for the "Fab Four."
I respect that you are voicing your opinion in a non-derogatory way. You are entitled to like the Beatles version more and thank you for not trying to push your views on everyone else. It is very noble of you.
Reading a lot of the comments here is bringing me to tears. So much praise...so much love....so much appreciation....and lots of sadness... Karen was loved by many many people and several generations...those that grew up listening have done her voice justice by passing it on to their children. And why is this sad to me? Because everything everybody is saying about her is what I want to say also...and I'm sad she can't read what she meant to all of us and how melancholy we are about her passing 36 years ago. RIP our dear and loved, Karen Carpenter.
In terms of singing, I don’t think it gets better than the first few lines of this song. The purest, richest, most melodic and emotional voice I’ve ever heard. Spine tingling!!
Having heard The Beatles and The Carpenters versions of Ticket to Ride, and I love both versions, but if I had to choose which one is the best, I would go for the Carpenters. Karen had a voice that you could understand every single word she sang. A voice made in heaven. Even John Lennon once said that Karen had a fabulous voice. RIP Karen and John.
I'm not ashamed to say this but Karen's voice brings me to tears every time I seriously hope she is in pop music's hall of fame doesnt really matter now she's surely singing with the angels for eternity
This song was released in the Spring of 1970 when I was a CAP cadet doing search and rescue. I first heard it on the radio as we were returning home from a search in the Sierras in May 1970 in which 3 search volunteers were killed. The song hit me that three men had died, and after all these years I always think of them whenever I hear this song. Ironically, the search was conducted under winter weather conditions just like what is depicted in this video.
Karen feels like an angel was born into the world as a human, left behind many beautiful songs and then left for heaven. This is something I always feel.
I remember when I first heard this song when it came out in '69. I don't think it got the attention and respect it needed, as we were all hearing the future, a sound we had never heard before and hence could never have considered. So, it took some time for our ears to accept what we were hearing. And, that is witnessed by the fact that the song kept returning to the charts over and over again like few other songs have ever done.
I absolutley love the Beatles, they were and still are one of the most influential bands in the history of music, and to here this version of 'ticket to ride' is mesmerising! Karen had a wonderful unique voice and to here this version in their own style is just brilliant, they were a band that could get away with singing Beatles songs.
Feb. 4 will be 41 years (1983). Last Dec. 8 (2023) was 43 years after we lost John Lennon. Both, the most shocking musician's deaths I've ever felt. None will ever approach losing her at only 32, and he at 40. Nobody could have predicted their loss at such early ages, and for reasons that could never be believed or thought could happen.
Karen Carpenter is the most amazing women. Her voice is like that of an angel, and she will never be forgotten. I learned how to sing by listening to her, and I owe my voice to her.
The expression on her face and the look in her eyes says it all towards the end.......Think I'm gonna be sad......, Think I'm gonna be sad......., think I'm gonna be sad........, think I'm gonna be sad. Thanks for the memories, RIP
I am so glad I was a teenager during the 70's so I could be apart of the greatest music of all time. The Carpenters just made it perfect. Karen's voice was so unique, like no other I have heard.
Whether she sang the Carpenters' songs or others' songs, Karen's voice was simply angelic. A beautiful soul and talent lost too young in life. RIP, Beautiful Karen. Your music lives on. You will forever be a beautiful Superstar.
There was and has never will never be another Karen Carpenter voice. Her voice was magic. The Carpenters were a group unequaled to none other. Karen did not need to leave us so soon. She was a beautiful person both inside and out. It makes me very sad that her disease was not known about when she passed away. Karen Carpenter is still a legend. RIP
Karen Carpenter and Whitney Houston's voices will both never be matched by any singer. Such a Special unique style nobody will ever come close to touching!
You're an idiot. Neither Carpenter, nor (especially) Houston could come NEAR Garland, Lena Horne, Ella or Streisand. And I'm saying this as a Carpenter fan!
As I woke up this morning my eyes glassed up & a tear ran down the right side of my face that soon turned into a small puddle soaked up by a tissue. It was 30 years ago Today that we lost one of the most wonderful spirits the world has ever seen & heard, her name was Karen (Carpenter.) I could never express in words what Karen personally meant to me & to this day she still has a profound effect on my Life & always will. I Love You Karen , Love Vic
I like the Beatles and all their songs. This version of Ticket to Ride is one of my favorites of Karen and Richard. Course, all her songs are my favorites. I am grateful that we have CZcams so we can watch and listen to all the songs we grew up with. I am 63 years old and really miss the songs I grew up with , but wait, there's CZcams now. YES!!! We here all love Karen but lets not forget Richard. His harmony really added to the songs Karen sang. R I P Karen. You will never be forgotten. And neither will you Richard. I wish to thank them for enriching our lives with their lovely music . ^__^
I love this ballad version more than the one of Beatles. It used an arrangement by Richard Carpenter which drastically differed from the Beatles original. So beautifull!!
Song came out year I graduated from High School; of course The Carpenters were always one of my favorite group. Karen would now have been 65 and who knows what impact she might have had. Really loved her voice and songs her and Richard wrote.
My mother loved them, so she told me when I was 5. After I entered an elementary school, I quitted listening to these songs. I thought they are out-of-date. The time has past. When I was a high school student, my teacher recommended me to hear it. Then I noticed her pronunciation is very clear, so it's very easy for non-native speakers to understand. Moreover, I found her beauty seemed to shine though their songs. Since then, I started listening to their songs again. I LOVE THE CARPENTERS.
The crazy thing about her voice is that she makes it look so easy. That sound that comes out is so soothing to the ears. Those inflections are simply amazing.
When you compare this to The Beatles Karen wins hands down with this slow down reserved delivery and least we not forget Richard being the driving composition Force
The Beatles version is sm better than this, but this version is still incredible, and does the original justice, which says alot since The Beatles are the best band of all time
This is a lovely interpretation by The Carpenters. They did a great job making it their own. The Beatles version..well..it sounds like The Beatles!😅 They wrote it, of course, and their stylings are quite different enough from The Carpenters that each interpretation stands on its own. It's just a matter of whether you'd prefer to hear a "heavy metal-lish" version (Ringo's drums on this, according to John), or an easy listening version (TC). Both have merit, depending on your mood.🙂❤️
The greatest female singer ever!!!!!
I agree!
Totally agree from England mate. Voice of an angel.
You are Right!

It isn't genius, its a voice that was smooth as butter.

Yes, she was a great singer and drummer, and Richard was a great producer and arranger, technically. But, their actual music still sucks. It’s garbage.
It's a beautiful cover of a Beatles song ?
How can that suck ?
Much of their other material was by Bacharach and David.
*A voice like Karen Carpenter's only comes once in a thousand years. Absolute Perfection. 'Nuff said.*
Spot on and Eva C - Billy Holiday they where to dam good for this crazy world .

This is Paul McCartney's favourite version of this song and now I know why. Just lovely..
What a gorgeous arrangement. Karen was only 19 when she recorded this. To have that much vocal maturity at such a young age is a testament to her genius.
this is not the original recording of 1969, but a later remix (1973) with Karen singing the vocal track also new.
In any event, her voice is pure magic!
Still absolutely beautiful.
Throw some good genes in there also, as Richard & Karen were inherently blessed w/ talent. May seem like an anomaly in a way as they were really right out of middle America.

Incredible performance and arrangement ❤
Possibly the most inventive and original of all Beatles covers .. well done Richard and beautifully sung Karen

The Carpenters version of "Help" is good to, as is Shirley Bassey's version of George Harrison's "Something" IMO. 🤔🤯😊☺️🤗 🎶 🎵 🎤 📯 🎹 🥁 👊👍👏
totally agree, it gives the song deeper and sadder meaning
Judith Durhams version of "yesterday " is in a similar vein. 1960's pop audiences didn't want pathos, the Beatles didn't disappoint.
In my view, the best Beatles cover is The Fool On The Hill, by Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66, even Paul McCartney praised it.
Karens voice is pure perfection and Richards arrangement is beautiful. Thank you both for the music you gave me in my lifetime.
This music is as fresh as it was 40 years ago. I think the Carpenters will be around forever.
I couldn't agree more, I'm 18 years old and adore their music!

When John Lennon heard this he said it's better than their version and told Karen that she has the most fabulous voice.
I definitely agree💗🎵😀🙋
God must have had to have that perfect voice back, to teach angels how to sing.
God's an ass then.
Fantastic harmony that you don't hear much in today's music.
+Sandyn They sang harmony with themselves thanks to the then relatively new technology of overdubbing.
Every time Karen sings, she brings out the best!
..and the tears 😢😭
In recent years, when Richard was asked about the "Ticket To Ride" promo film, he cited it as one of the highlights in their career. Had Karen lived she would've echoed that same sentiment, but, typical of her personality, she would have poked fun of the closeup shots of her mouth!...
Love you forever, little drummer girl. Rest easy... ❤ 🌹
I can watch this video over and over again💗Even at 70 she would still sing this song amazingly👸Karen would have been 70 years old this year...r.i.p.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded.
Best female voice in the world ever! 😍
This is one of several Beatles' songs (along with "Help" and "Nowhere Man") that the Carpenters did not merely "cover," but made their own. By giving "Ticket to Ride" their own flair, they made it as much as standard for themselves as it had been for the "Fab Four."
Beautiful voice of an angel, harmonies are exquisite.
I respect that you are voicing your opinion in a non-derogatory way. You are entitled to like the Beatles version more and thank you for not trying to push your views on everyone else. It is very noble of you.
Damn...this version is so haunting. The vocal harmonies on this recording are absolutely incredible. Can easily bring a tear to your eye.
Karen's voice grabs your soul and wont let go ...
Karen’s voice was angelic . I highly doubt another voice like hers will ever come back for generations RIP Karen Gone way to soon ❤️
In terms of singing, I don’t think it gets better than the first few lines of this song. The purest, richest, most melodic and emotional voice I’ve ever heard. Spine tingling!!
Precisely, and you hit the target with Karen. Nobody did it better, even Carly Simon (joke pun)!
What a extraordinary, beautiful voice! Karen can give me the chills when she hits a high note and when she descends down into her lower range,
An immortal voice a perfect and profound depth of emotion no one can do this at 19 !
Right on
I thank God that my mother taught me music before the music was gone important the Carpenters were and how amazing her voice was
Karen Carpenter voice was like liquid gold she can sing a telephone book great love songs you'll never be forgotten Karen
I couldn't agree with you more. It is only in hindsight, sometimes, that we can truly appreciate a great work of art such as this.
*..HOLYhell??!* --> 'The Carpenters - Ticket To Ride'..??!*
You know, sometimes the person that writes a song should never sing it; they should get somebody else to, and Ticket To Ride is that song.
The Beatle's recording of this song is perfect as is Karen's cover.
@@suave-rider what a horrible take, John's voice is so good
It's so hard to believe this beautiful woman with the purest, most beautiful voice has been gone for more than 40 years. What a loss!
The unmistakable sound of Karen Carpenter ♥️
This song will and always be a classic! What a voice!
Simple incomparable!
It's not just this song. *ALL* her songs are classics.
@@ronaldcheng1857 indeed
Karen Carpenter is the most amazing women. Her voice is like that of an angel, and she will never be forgotten. I learned how to sing by listening to her, and I owe my voice to her.
I have spent most of today listening to The Carpenters music (10/7/2021), Karen singing this song is as crisp and fresh as the video imagery.
Vocal harmonies are hauntingly beautiful. Karen's voice was angelic...pure magic
Voice of the century. America's darling.
The best singer of the planet!
Whether she sang the Carpenters' songs or others' songs, Karen's voice was simply angelic. A beautiful soul and talent lost too young in life. RIP, Beautiful Karen. Your music lives on. You will forever be a beautiful Superstar.
That girl could hit those low notes.
No one had so a Beautiful contralto voice like Karen Carpenter!
She perfected the highs and the lows with her clear and crisp "FMstereo" type voice!
@@Darrigrande She was actually a mezzo, with really good lows
She could hit any note with clarity and perfection. She is sorely missed.
Pedro no she was a contralto which are very rare
There was and has never will never be another Karen Carpenter voice. Her voice was magic. The Carpenters were a group unequaled to none other. Karen did not need to leave us so soon. She was a beautiful person both inside and out. It makes me very sad that her disease was not known about when she passed away. Karen Carpenter is still a legend. RIP
Quite simply the best female singer ever!
Wonderful classical sound of Richard Carpenter on this and other songs are so beautiful.
Best version I ever heard of this song. Been missing Karen for many, many years - will never get over this loss.
Second best version I've heard. But very good.
One of the best female vocalists of all time. I don't even like people who KNOW people who don't like The Carpenters lol
Karen Carpenter and Whitney Houston's voices will both never be matched by any singer. Such a Special unique style nobody will ever come close to touching!
We've made progress. Glennis Grace's voice is 99% as beautiful & emotional as Houston's. Far as Karen, there's no 2nd place.
You're an idiot. Neither Carpenter, nor (especially) Houston could come NEAR Garland, Lena Horne, Ella or Streisand. And I'm saying this as a Carpenter fan!
@Bobert Wiltshire lol
Please don't ever compare Karen's voice with Whitney Houston's . Total insult to Karen
@@richardf.8793 ridiculous
The Carpenters and the 70s went hand in hand-great music for a great time!
Best version ever in my opinion!
Song came out year I graduated from High School; of course The Carpenters were always one of my favorite group. Karen would now have been 65 and who knows what impact she might have had. Really loved her voice and songs her and
Richard wrote.
Only 2.73 million views???? Such a work of art. R.I.P. Karen Carpenter love always XXX
The crazy thing about her voice is that she makes it look so easy. That sound that comes out is so soothing to the ears. Those inflections are simply amazing.
I have started to wonder if she wasn't channelling that voice from another realm, it's just so otherworldly
There is nothing like her ❤❤❤
She was so talented. They made some good music.
Awesome music💗🎵😀🙋
When you compare this to The Beatles Karen wins hands down with this slow down reserved delivery and least we not forget Richard being the driving composition Force
Michael Herpy yep
Nothing is better than The Beatles version, but this is nice.
