- Following the disaster of my boat sinking, I decided to take it as a positive and use the time to make my boat better than ever been before. Throughout this short video you'll see step by step how I renovated the boat back to full health.
What a blagger! The engine just needs new plugs/filter, drop any fluids, crank it without the plug in and then a good clean.
You could even do it yourself!
Love watching your videos and great to see the boat running smoothly - Dom has done an awesome job but I think you were turned over by the marine engine guy. I have refurbished and repaired multiple outboards for my local rowing club, including fully submerged whilst running, and they don’t cost the earth to do - certainly a heck of a lot less than £1400. What the do take is time and a bit of space to strip, lay out, clean and replace as required then rebuild.
Need to put a auto bilge pump in with a battery and solar panel so that when it rains it doesn’t sink again
as a small engine mechanic just because the engine has been water logged dosent mean it would cost lots to fix just clean the carb and make sure the cylinder is dry and i reckon she would fire right up with a bit of tinkering but the guys gotta make money some how
That dealer did well. Sold a new motor. Easy outboard fix, it's not salty water.
Used motor, but still. His motor will be for sale next week
I'd of done the same when a man comes in that looks like he does don't have no clue so you take advantage of someone being so thick it's his own fault just chuck money at it without learning anything

Tbf yes the engine took in water but it wasn't running when it sank so its not a scrapper engine . Id pull it apart an put a major service on it .

Hi Jacob, shop around for a service on your outboard, don't trust the dealers they will always come the negative and want to sell you another motor..
Agreed, in freshwater that may well run again.

There designed to be repaired after water damage he got Jacob hook line and sinker, that marina guy was a salesman not a mechanic.

You should see if u can get a automatic Bilge pump in case it fills up again so if u wasn’t with the boat it would pump the water out and not sink

That engine was well able to be saved with about 2 hours work, bloody hate salesmen ripping people off
Yeah, you could see old mate wasn’t even interested in salvaging it. That’s the problem with big workshops like that, their labour charge is massive and they don’t want to touch anything that’s old or too difficult.

Put a proper cover on the back of the boat and get a good bilge pump in there with solar panal and battery

Mate that engine is 100% you won't need any new parts.
It was completely submerged, which most might think is bad but is actually what would have saved it. In addition it wasn't even salt water..

You got flossed on the motor, as others have mentioned. I sank a quad and a sled; both still work today. You can get it running for little to no cost.
Sorry to break the news to you bro but that motor would of been fine that dealer at Walton on Thames west London is a con merchant me old mate good service that old Honda would of purred like a kitten.
Absolutely spot on, I dropped my engine in the harbour one night coming back from a trip, dried it out with a hair dryer next morning and it started first pull .

Good move on the new engine but your old out board motor man really did a hard sales job on you your old motor it will need of a real service and a few parts changed for sure but should run like it did better get a other outboard service man and asked around who is best even if he is miles away a second engine is nice to have while the other is getting serviced or two onboards for long trips

Get down the marina and get your outboard there designed to be repaired after water damage they live there life next to water son.

maybe fix those windows.. also put a small solar panel and a bilgepump.. that way its a lot harder to sink it! Also just clean the engine up a bit, replace all fluids.. clean the carb and then just run it what gives.. its just a simple engine..edit i see u replaced it: atleast give it a service every year.. and try to keep it out of the water so u wont get it all green.. ruining the value.. It must be so hard to find a boat in the uk though.. I live in holland where there is so mucht water/boats around...
Typical dealer tell you its junk so he can sell you another motor , sank in fresh water totally salvageable with a bit of work , he will have that up for sale in less than a week for 1k plus

Miss my Shetland 535 awesome boats wooden sandwich resin transome most need replacing as they rot inside to out so watch it, last one came of production line in 1975 so they are getting old now

hi can you tell me what you gave for your boat of your mate before you did all the work the first time,also try to put some easy start and boost your old motor it should work again
100% , bit of carb cleaner, a engine flush , new oil , fuel . And a prayer to the gods that the wiring is still sound . 🤣

Don't let him bulshit you all you got to do is flush the motor out oil it up the cylinders and re-oil the bottom and clean the carburetor and to be honest I was just going to cost you is the time and the oil the refill the bottom end of the motor. I bought an engines that were under water before and just cleaned them out and fired right up
Get some beach and put one at the back one so even if they do take the cover off your beach pumps will start pumping the water 💦
Pull the spark plugs and crank it over, itll spit any and all water out. Ensure you still have spark, clean carb and you wont spend a dime.

I can't believe you've just put decking as a floor 😮😮😮😮 Space between stringers and floor MUST BE DRY!!! And ideally filled with floating foam. All has to be fibreglassed and the floor must be absolutely waterproof and made of marine plywood and fibreglassed. Talk to any boat builder for advice, they will help for sure. Now the boat is extremely dangerous when filled with water on a rainy day. Water should be collected only in the bilge well not under the whole floor😮😮😮😮
Can I buy your old engine? That man was bound to rip you off ,wanker. It wasn't running when it went in ,sometimes it will actually cost you just a little patience and a few quid to get them running as good as ever. Seriously I would buy the old engine but I bet that nice dealer has it
Totally agree I work for a Yamaha main agent called the boat shop ww ltd and I think to just write this engine off without even looking in to it is totally wrong it should have been checked properly before that diagnosis

Yep dealer has it I bet, plug out turn over if not seized it can be fixed easy I have fixed loads of engines sat on the sea bed for longer.

Get your old engine, drain every bit of fluid out of it take spark plug out and keep turning it over, fresh oil new plug be fine. I’ve sunk a few crossers and never had a problem after all dried out!
More than likely the dealer ever so kindly offered to dispose of the old " scrap " engine and might even have offered a slight discount on the new one, then as you said got it working in less than an hour gave it a service and then put it up for sale a few days later.
Disagree with the verdict on the old engine. Dump all fluids, pull spark plugs and inspect the bores with a camera, and I would put some lightweight machinist oil in each bore and then wind the motor over by hand. I don’t see it requiring much more than half a days work to get running again.

Dang Jacob got proper scammed by that dealer, I have seen engines submerged in fresh water for years and come back to life with minimal work less than 30min and usually if it is a 4 stroke its as easy as draining the oil out removing the plug and turning the engine over to eject water in the cylinder then draining the carbs float bowl and flushing with fuel replacing the air filter if it has one and refilling with oil and replacing the plug with a new one and 2 strokes are even easier as there is no oil to worry about then you start it up run it up to temp and burn of the remaining water, yours looks like Honda f stroke 10HP so guaranteed if that guy is keeping your engine he is going to spend 30min tops draining the water and oil out out spend a few pound to flush the oil system a few times then clean the carb power wash the engine then it fire it up letting it run up to temp as he goes off for a cup of tea and a laugh that the engine will be on his sales floor tomorrow for £1000.

The canal is about 4ft deep, still moving water, pls we are all confident swimmers. However I appreciate your concerns.
At about 5:50, you mention that you need to go back to measure the transom to know if its a short shaft or a long shaft that you need for your boat..... You just brought him an engine, he could've measured it super easily... I wouldn't trust him just for that fact alone, unless you told him you didn't know if it fitted your transom... but that's about a 5 inch (127mm) difference in length, so you would know...
Surprised you didn’t use a marine sealant on all the wood.

Is that a Shetland 535? That was my first boat absolutely solid units meany a happy time I had on mine even taught my kids how to fish sad day when I had to sell her 😢

The mooring is cheap if you keep on in a continuous cruising licence. Mine is around £300 a year👊🏻

Funny how you say final thing to do is mount the gearbox... coughs.. did you mean the remote engine controls perhaps?
The gearbox is on the lower part of the engine's leg and also.. you only got 2 gears, forward and reverse.
and that is a tiny engine for that size boat, my shetland 535 (almost same boat) has a 70hp Evinrude on it but then i fish on Cardigan Bay and further with it.

Yeah I have a 13 foot tinnie that’s probably 3 times lighter than that and it’s got 25hp on it. I wouldn’t run under 50hp 4 stroke on that size boat.
4mph speed limit on UK canals, and only 6mph on UK rivers so a 70hp on that boat would be a bit pointless, and anyone who doesn't know that his engine only has forward and reverse, and goes out with the remotes in his bloody hand should probably stick to a rowing boat. The original outboard would have been fine, I'd have had that running in less than an hour.

Outboard guys like a car sales man he's only intrested in selling you a new engine bet he bought the old one for peanuts or free . Make sure not to leave the petrol connector on the engine all the time only when your using it as it allows gasses to build up making it very hard to start
