I’m so proud of you. You not only pointed out all of the details on the naval coats but even called them by the correct names and got the correct ranks. I love history specifically the nitty gritty details on uniforms and to see this amount of effort put into a video maybe by a channel such as yourself that didn’t need or have to brings joy to me. I am also a person who loves history but he forgot one thing: the U.S navy uniform image he used was the dress uniform of the KRIEGSMARINE. Pretty big mistake imo.

Something I think is important to note is that he's known (at least on the box) as "Cap'n", not "Captain" or "CAPT", which might be a whole legal thing. Another thing that is probably important to notice is that there's no star/leaf above the stripes on his sleeve, which (at last in modern times) are present on officers' uniforms.
Alternate theory - we're watching adverts from an alternate timeline where everything that's been said in the video that says he *isn't* in our world's military is the opposite in Cap'n Crunch's timeline. In his world, he *is* an official member of the military.

Privateers(pirates.. oohh scary) held to a very vague concept of the Navel ranking, possibly to mock them. A Captain helmed a sigle ship, an Admiral helmed a ship while overseeing one or more additional ships.

Important clarification: "Captain" also refers to a non-military commander of a vessel, a position which does not require present or former membership in the naval forces. While a ship's captain must be a licensed mariner of Master grade, the rank is otherwise unrestricted.

Captain Crunch is a Privateer and if Matpat ever told the truth he would have told people that. A privateer is a civilian contracted by the government to act as a military officer. Also that woman is a Private which is the lowest rank of navy you can be meaning she has no access to actual records nor any actual ability to discredit any information and that exact woman was dishonorably discharged for faking her credentials of being a higher rank than she actually was.

When I went to JROTC camp this summer, we were issued uniforms for the camp. And were told to not try them on at home, and NOT to whear them outside. At the time I laughed it off but i had no clue it was a fedral crime! Sife note: not I did not whear the uniform outside of the hellhole known as camp

As quite literally being an active duty nuke student in the US Navy, this has gotta be the most applicable video to myself. It's crazy, it wants me to freakin boycott one of my fave cereals, just hearing about Cap'n Crunch's impersonation... I should really do my own research, but I do really appreciate MatPat for opening my eyes with these thoroughly researched and meticulously crafted videos.

“Captain” can only be his Nickname. Captain James Cook was never a Captain, only a Lieutenant, and then later got promoted to Commander, however because he was the leader of his Ship, he naturally got referred to as “Captain” (like how a Pirate ship’s leader would also be Captain), and that’s how he got remembered!

@@kusaisama He was a famous explorer and cartographer (mapmaker) in the Royal Navy. He was killed in 1779 in Hawaii while attempting to detain the ruling chief of the Island. Oddly, he was killed by the same person that killed Captain Crunch. Cereal killer.
He spedifially said that capn crunch broke the stolen valor act of *2013* and James cook died in like the 1700s so that doesn't really match.

Merchant navy uniforms are modelled on generic military uniforms but aren't standardised so stripes can be any form. In addition companies often drag feet issuing uniforms and its standard practice to hold onto gear as long as possible.
No USA or military insignia on uniform means its not military for USA. His ship flies company flag and civilian prefix so he's merchant navy with a naval inspired uniform from his company.

Captain Crunch is officially a captain
I can explain the discrepancies. First he could be a privateer, which would make him be considered a naval officer but also means he doesn’t need to have any records. The second option is back in the 60’s or 70’s the building where they kept many military records caught on fire in St.Louis and lots of the records were destroyed.
