VW Golf mk4 TDI relay 109 removal and install

  • In this video, I show where the relay #109 is located and how to remove and install it. If your VW is cranking over but won't start, then this could be the problem. The part number is 1J0 906 381A. Fortunately this relay is inexpensive and it's a good idea to carry a spare just incase.

    Hi don’t no if you can help fitted a new turbo now the actuator is not opening but opens when I do it with a computer

    2003 TDI ALH , wont crank over at all, battery volts drop a bit when i turn the key but no starter or starter solenoid sound at all. New battery and fuses checked. If i jump the solenoid the starter spins but wont engage

      Matt BozAwesome - Maybe you have a bad starter? I've never had that happen to me before. When was the last time that it started? Have you replaced anything recently?

      @@Corysdiyauto it started and then died for the last time on video. Sounded like the battery was dieing right before it stopped, then i put in new battery and nothing. No click nothing. I thought the same, but was weird the starter still rotated when i jumped the solinoid

      @@BozAwesome - Maybe you have a bad connection somewhere? I would check all of the wiring that is connected to the starter. Look for frayed wires and loose connections.

    Thanks for the video. I'd like to see the exact position of the pins when presenting the part for re-installation - it's a real fiddle in a confined space. Do you know whether it's the same position for a right hand drive Golf?

      nickythom5 - I am not sure if the relay would be in the same position in a right hand drive model. I would just look in the same place that I did.... just on the opposite side. Look for that gray relay that's labeled 109. Hopefully yours is easy to find.

      Malvis Millers - Relay 109 is the main power supply relay. If this has failed, then your engine will crank over, but not start.

    My car is cranking over but not starting but my windows and dash lights also aren’t working... I have battery power and a new alternator but people told me to check the 409 relay because for a couple days I could pull that out and put it back in and my car would start. Now it just cranks but won’t turn over. I have a 2000 vw golf

      Foxy Venom - I would definitely replace the relay because it sounds like it's faulty.

      No codes were present. This was replaced as preventative maintenance.

    Hi I have a golf 1.9 tdi
    I touched one of the wires near the relay and there was a spark....
    And now the car's lights are working but the car won't start

      Kurt Vella - These diesels don't have fuel pumps in the tanks. The injection pump pulls fuel from the tank. This has nothing to do with relay 109.

    Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI ALH 2005. I had a sudden engine stalling, engine vibration, misfire, Fuel quantity adjuster N146 upper and lower limit reached errors. I checked everything and all are good. Finally figured out that the relay 469 is Faulty. Part number is 6Y0 906 381. I could not find a new relay. Can I buy relay 109 with the part number 1J0 906 381 A in lieu of 6Y0 906 381? Are they the same?

      Hmmmm interesting. It looks like they have the same pins. Maybe they are interchangeable? I'm not 100% sure on that though.

    My glow plugs were all bad . I replaced them all. I replaced the wiring harness. The relay seems to work. I can see it working with the cover off. When I turn the key on, the voltage at the wiring harness reads 12 millivolts, and the amperage reads 45 amps. I thought it was supposed to read 12 volts. Any ideas?

      Kevin Muth - Could be a faulty glow plug relay 180, not 109. Relay 109 is the power supply relay.

    Anyone able to help me .. when I turn my key my clocks are dead and fuel pump dosent kick in ..
    But lights radio and everything works even if I turn on my lights it shows on my clocks .. the engine sounds healthy when I turn the key and batter is brand new and all fuses are perfect

      @@edyerh9287 - Relay #103 is a glow plug relay. I'm not familiar with the mk5 setup, so I don't know where your 109 would be? I know that sometimes people take out relays and don't put them where they are supposed to go. The same goes with fuses too. When I first got my mk4, there were so many things that weren't right due to unknowledgeable people working on it. These are great cars if maintained and cared for properly.

    Hi I drive a a Polo 1.9tdi (ATD)The car cranks but doesn't start and there's no power to the injectors...could the relay be the reason??

      Modisha Jobo - I'm not familiar with the ATD. Are you sure that you are getting fuel? The relay could be the issue, but there are other things that could contribute to a "no start" problem. Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? The relay is inexpensive, so you could replace that first.

    Hmmm my mk4 is different from yours , i got a OEM ECU fuse but mine says 428 on the fuse and its Gray colored .

      @@Corysdiyauto same spot as yours in the video , mine is supposedly in the number 12 fuse spot , the old one i see is a large black one like the one in your video , J317 Terminal 30 voltage supply relay .

    so which relay i need to change?

      I'm not familiar with the 1.6sr, but it's definitely not relay 173, because that's for the daytime running lights. Do you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key on?

    My Golf IV is shocking while driving sometimes. After a while the engine is going off. I can restart again but the shocking becomes worse and then the Bobine dies. This happens over and over again. Can this be the 109??

      @@Corysdiyauto thanks for the video. i have a 2000 golf gls 2.0. mine has literally been dying as i am driving, i swapped in another used fuel pump and it did it as well. now the original pump has 210,000 miles and the one i swapped has 155,000 miles on it. i ordered a new pump, because by simply tapping on the fuel pump gently car fired up for both pumps when they failed. but i will order new relay to throw in the glove box.

      my car will crank but wont start , it happened randomly, idk what to do i dont think my relay is shot bc i see the glow plug light as well as every other light , im tried alot of things and nothing seems to work i even did the fuel filter as well as primed it

      @@tomgreen749 - Alright, relay 100 is for the indicator lights, turn signals, etc. That one isn't your problem here. Relay 109 is cheap, so I would just replace it. You can try to take it out and tap it on something hard and then put it back in to see if that works. Sometimes these relays just get stuck. That could be the case here?

      On mine it’s not the case. One side seems to be a latch that you need to get a nail in to push away from the relay. Meaning two hands awkwardly pressed together, a dislocated shoulder and it slips out nicely…. Honestly VAG don’t make it easy do they.

      Eric Mkhonza - No, it's the main power supply relay. When you turn your ignition on it sends power to many different areas to allow the engine to start. I believe that it does send power to the glow plug relay (180).
