  • In this video I will walk you though some basic spark and injector pulse testing before we find a no fuel pressure problem. Fuel pump power and ground testing will be shown as well as operation of the ASD and fuel pump relays. Trouble codes can be misleading. The cam sensor fault in memory had nothing to do with this no start condition.

    ScannerDanner:
You have just added one of the most important aspects of effective teaching/learning to your videos!
That is, a summary with diagrams.
Please continue to do this for all your future videos if possible.
The six steps to effective teaching/learning:
    1. Tell ‘em what you are going to tell ‘em. (Overview)
    2. Tell ‘em. Using diagrams and examples. (Content)
    3. Tell ‘em what you just told ‘em. (Summary/review with diagrams.)
    4. Answer any questions the students may have.(Clarification.)
    5. Have the students do it. (Hands-on)
    6. Test ‘em. (Evaluation of teaching/learning process.)
    Lasting knowledge comes from:
    Reading it.
    Hearing it.
    Writing it. (Note taking)
    Seeing/smelling it.
    Feeling it.
    Understanding it.
    Doing it.
Your method was excellent before....now, you are a true Master!
    Thanks!

Had nearly the same problem in a 92 Dakota V8 checked all the way to the back. 100% sure its the pump, dropped tank, changed the pump, NOTTA... dropped the tank again suspect bad pump from part store. Decided to go a little further, turned out the wire to the terminal at the plug inside the rubber plug was broken. hard lesson learned, as the after market pump was $118.00, and was not as good as the original. FYI dble check at the plug terminal ends before buying the pump. Even probe the pump terminals once you drop the tank to prove it's bad. Love your videos..YOUR A COOL DUDE. Wish I had found your channel years ago. Keep up the great videos.

I know this is a old video but as a 6 year ASE mechanic that fixes and flips cars, I always love watching these videos. They remind me of my beginner days when we had what I call the Ol' Original Gangster mechanic's that have 5 massive tool boxes filled with mostly custom made tools and they would always be in the back corner of the shop lol. when you dont know how to get to something or cant trace something down. They'd show you a thing or two and have it fixed in a fifth of the time it would take me but I'd learn old and new techniques which was priceless haha then I'd owe them a 30 pack of beer. Great video guys loved it.

Good video! A note on the Power Distribution box lid diagram to others working on a Dakota - the fuses and relays are in the positions shown, however, due to the shape of the box, the (A) bank is printed on the opposite side of the main bank (B) from where they are actually located. It's confusing, but if you look at each bank diagram as a separate entity it becomes clear.

Good job Paul! I was thinking about the slowly dropping voltage at the positive feed of the FP coil, when you took the jumper wire off and I belive that is another method that confirms what you said: that indeed the winding of the fuel pump is opened. The energy stored in the solenoid (by autoinduction) shoud dissipate faster with a low resistance grounded path through the coil (with a good pump). Of course, when the only path (through ground) available is your high resistance voltmeter, it takes longer.

You've got me into excellent habits, brother! I just repaired a short in one of those yellow dual rotating beacon light bars on a contractor's pickup truck - was thinking of everything I've learned from you along the way. Went down the wire, section by section, and eventually ran into a BUTCHER job on some wiring connectors, lol - turns out the owner's son hooked that light up for him. There were bare strands of copper hanging out of those cheap blue box-store connectors, and shorting directly into the cheap blue connector for the ground! Only mistake I made was doing an amp check with my meter - I briefly saw 29A before it nuked the fuse, LOL. It happens - 18 years with that meter, and I've nuked my share of fuses over the years. :D After I cut a couple feet of un-needed wire, bad connectors, and an un-needed switch, the lights drew 5.56A. Fixed! He took that off the excavation bill for my barn addition (where my new lift will soon reside!!). Every dollar helps. THANK YOU Paul!! :)

Almost 100%! They only bit I would add is the multi plug on the fuel pump, sender unit? You probed the wires close to the plug but without actually undoing the plug and checking on the contacts then there is always scope for a problem here. I speak from experience, pushed back pin in a plastic molex multi plug that stopped a fuel pump from running! I was convinced after doing very much the same as you that it was the pump. Only when changing the pump did I find the pushed back contact.
Like you I carry a full load relay tester in my kit. I runs a cycle of ten operations and carries out a milivolt drop check on the contacts and gives a pass/fail status. I also have a relay break out box kit that comes in handy. Sandwiched in series with relay it gives readily available test points.

no argument here my friend, but for us, getting to that connector was not possible so the tank is coming down regardless and these would be standard tests when installing a new pump (if I'm dropping the tank, it's getting a pump)

The best way to understand that fuse box lid is to think to yourself that the lid itself is a stamp , like you would use on an envelope. If you imagine pressing it down and getting an imprint and looking at the underside of the lid it will all fall into place. Diagnosis begins at 28:40 😁. Great video and great way to show why we don't fix codes , we fix cars .

Not true, the first 15 minute were good too (spark and injection pulse testing etc), so only 15 minutes of me chasing a fog light relay , not 30 as you're suggesting

It absolutely wasn't just a mirror image was it? Part of it was and that was the issue, only part of it.

I bought Paul's book and secretly thought I'd watch all the premium videos and unsubscribe before the end of the free trial. I did watch them all before it expired, due to a couple of weeks off work and my wife and family gone at the same time, but I was so blown away by how good it was that I'm still a premium member today! You will not be disappointed! Subscribe!

That's awesome johnaclark1! Thank you for your honesty. I do have a lot of turn over with the 14 day free trial and that's to be expected, but even with me paying for bandwidth now, it is still worth it. I need people to see what is there. I'm convinced that most stay when they see what's really there. Your comment cements this thought process for me. Thank you so much again.

Its so good to see videos like this to refresh our memories and learn few others things and to see how other techs deal with problems like this. Thanks for the great video lecture. After years of watching your vids its so great to see how passionate you are on what you do it gives me motivation to learn more as I progress and makes me more efficient as a tech. Anyone reading this I recommend purchasing SCANNERDANNER BOOK it comes really handy and great over all book.
I've worked on a vehicle (mazda) with a bad fuel pump. Checked power 12v and ground to be good by back proving connector from pump. As I removed fuel pump connector I also found connector pin burnt out and harness needed to be replace. I then rechecked fuel pump and both needed to be replace.

Nice vid. It looks like the legend on the inside of the fuse box lid is depicted as a mirror image. No idea why they'd do that, but I've heard that Ford do the same thing these days. Sometimes, you just have to look at the physical layout to work out how to decode it all. :-P

Great video....I have a dodge Dakota (been sitting for about 4 years) now wont start... it tries to crank just like this one in the video... sadly I cant do the work myself, but I'm now knowledgable so I wont get ripped off by a repair shop.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  Před 4 lety +1

Step one. You will need to drop the fuel tank and get rid of all the gas and change the fuel pump and sock strainer and in-line fuel filter. It is possible the pump is still good. So a psi check would be first. But I wouldn't drop the tank without also replacing the pump.
Step two, Your injectors are most likely stuck shut from the varnish build up, you may need to replace those too. If you are lucky you may be able to get them to start firing again my tapping gently on them BUT you HAVE to get rid of that old fuel!!!!!!

Awesome. Now I know how to check my 91 when it has its intermittent no start. Odd last time it died on me I banged tank, swapped relays. Nothing. Ended up having a gal of gas in back, kept feeding throttle body with a squirt to get it running. After 5th or 6th time it stayed running. Thinking fuel pump in my mind. Only does this when it's hot out and just under 1/2 tank of gas

Spray first, check pwr to pump, pull tank if good pwr. If no pwr, dance with relay operations....
I see some Chrysler use mirror image on PDC lid and others are as they are. To make us good and nuts! I'm 62 and been driven nuts from these. CK the pwr to pump first, then if you want to know what relay controls it "pull relay's". I find a power probe will knock out these uncertainties in seconds,, not even minutes. It's a good little friend for measuring voltage numbers as well....
    THX..

Once did a FP on a 90 Chevy pu w/454 tbi. I put a fuel line adapter in place, and proved to the owner that it was indeed a FP issue!! It was hot as blue blazes! There were multiple wasp nests! I ended being chased out twice by brown recluse spiders, one was right where I had been touching in the darkness, the other crawling on my overalls as I took a leak!! Was a hard job, took a long time, got the new pump in, and he wanted to see fuel pressure!! WHAT?? NO FUEL PRESSURE?? REALLY?? I crawled underneath, and disconnected the line at the filter, and SPLOOSH!! I got hit in the face with pressurized fuel!! In my eyes, in my ears, I was almost taken to the hospital because it was so bad!! Took me two hours to get back to it!
I had lost the little nipple inside my fuel pressure tester, the one that depressed the valve!! Oh, the fuel pump was bad, and I replaced it. After the fix, it started and ran, but before I started it, I showed him the NO PRESSURE, and took that as truth!! GOT LUCKY???? Not a chance!! Wasps, spiders (I am deathly afraid of spiders), fuel in my eyes, ears, nose and mouth, worked for hours in the heat and sun! I got stupid, not lucky!! But the parts cannon worked this time, just for the wrong reasons!!

This being a California vehicle, they ran a separate relay for the O2 sensor heaters. On the older systems, they did not, the ASD or the Fuel System relay did. Also if my memory is correct, the Alternator field power wire feed was shared with the LDP.
