An update worth the wait? 2024 SsangYong Musso XLV Adventure review (4x4 dual-cab ute)

  • Is the 2024 update really an improvement for the SsangYong Musso?
First thing, you'll notice that it's not the KG Mobility Musso. It's still a SsangYong, and the brand says it's sticking around here in Australia.
But is this - the only dual-cab ute currently on the market from South Korea - worth considering against some of the best cheap pick-up trucks on the market? Namely the GWM Ute and the LDV T60 Max?
Well, in this review, you'll see what the changes have been, whether they've been worthwhile, what the Musso is like to drive, what it costs to own and run, and whether you should buy one.
If you are interested in checking out the other reviews mentioned in this test, here they are:

Faultless ownership experience over past 21 months and 42000 km in a Musso Ultimate Lux XLV. Suspension and dampers a bit soft, tows 3.5T surprisingly capably. As an open road tourer, and occasional trips to Fraser Island , etc..superb vehicle for the money. Quiet, refined, spacious, good on fuel. More enjoyable to drive than a prior Toyota Prado Kakadu( more involving and better tech)

My 2023 Musso is heaps better than the MQ Triton that I had which the wife hated. SWB with coils is fine for us. No problems with the ride either. Power is ok for us, last small trip I got 6.8 lit/100km a lot better than our Forester. No auto stop start, great, no overpowering lane centering, no beeps telling you to keep your eyes on the road, life is good in our Musso. Oh and the dog doesn’t mind the lap sash seatbelt.

Ive got an MQ triton as my work ute.
      Issues listed below.
Suspension is poor and unable to deal with the weight of the car correctly over rough surfaces.
      Engine runs sooty.
Manifold prone to clogging and requires regular cleaning.
Factory intercooler hoses split easily .
      EGR prone to clogging/carbon buildup.
Headlights are poor and require a light bar etc.
Paint can peel on some models and is of low quality from factory.
Manual gear ratios are too high for normal comfortable driving and average for off-road use.
Torque band in the manual is too small (really requires a tune to fix).
Fan clutch issues can cause overheating under load (apparently only lasts 60,000km).
MQ Triton's suffer from turbo lag or lag in general especially when starting from standstill and the manual transmission makes this worse with high gearing.
Vinyl on floor easily splits over time around seats and floor areas.
      Needs a catch can installed
Everybody says "Triton's are a great, reliable vehicle" but then are like oh yeah but you need to upgrade that, oh you need to fix that, yeah that needs replacing etc etc.
My experience now tells me that an auto MQ triton may be the way but that doesnt fix the 70% of other issues

Good review and great reviewer, awesome in fact. Now subscribed 👏
Ssangyong have done a great job with the musso. This update needed to be better though. The creek should of been sized like the ranger. The wheels look too small on these cars especially the lwb. Maybe being black rims doesn’t help but they need to be at least 19’s or better designed/coloured? The elf rims are woeful and look aged already. $375 servicing is not cheap to undo a nut and change a simple filter and I would be doing an oil change every 8000 to 10000 kms rather than 15000.
Wish they imported them with the Khan badge on and wish Merv Hughes wasn’t doing their advertising. Don’t dumb your brand down Ssangyong, not everyone, in fact not that many Aussies are sport/cricket drongo’s in Australia. You could of not used him and spent his fee on that centre seat belt upgrade 😊

Both work well and makes it comfortable to tow and level, vehicle is so comfortable very smooth totally love the vented seats plenty of room inside best vehicle I have ever owned zero issues with it.
Got mine with 6k of extras for 48k extremely great value for money as far as the lap belt in rear goes don't have those kid problems to worry about so that is not an issue I don't cart passengers in mine, fantastic vehicle love it..

Looks like a contender for me. I would like a ute without all those interfering and beeping technologies. I don't want to have to turn anything off every time I start the car. I want simplicity and reliability. Safety to me is crumble zones, side protection, air bags, seat belt pretensioners, ABS brakes and stability control, rear view camera, not beeps and farts. I also want smaller wheels with larger tyres that will give me some protection off road.

I own an LXV Ultimate and like most utes it could do with more tie downs in the back.
Interestingly, there is full power supply for 12v behind the tub liner to the rear of the passenger side - look for a rectangular indentation - you can buy the Ssangyong weather proof plug kit and install it.(great for a fridge).
One downside is the lack of fixed install points for roof racks - it is a naked roof so you must use clamps.
Compared to my previous 2014 Amarok the aircon and heater fan is weak - doesn't really pump air out, but the Musso wipers and windscreen spray is better.
Surprisingly the radio is not DAB. There is no way i would connect my phone to the Apple Play or Android play in any vehicle as the car company then has 100% access to your phone data and you agree to let them do whatever they want with it.
There is no GPS sat nav in the Australian import, so i just use my phone as a stand alone GPS Nav. It is not connected to the car!
I enjoy driving it the Musso, it has enough power and rides well, the seats are comfortable.

We need a new ute as our 2015 Colorado LTZ is falling to peices after 250k. Been in the shop 3 times with engine issues , time for a new one. Going to get the Mussi Ultimate XLV as we have horses. The 7 year warrenty is a winner and 3.5t break tow is what we need. Looked at the base level Amorak Core its plain and lacks features and costs 55k in WA. To get the same festures the Musso has, your paying at least 70k way outside our price range. Hilux and Ranger all simila price for same features. We are not cashed up mining people so cannot afford to spend 70 - 80k on a ute,

There's no metal tub behind that tub liner and as a tradie its tough and easier to slide in tools and bags of cement etc than spray in type grip paint.

I like the steering, better around town than my previous Triton and Navara. The cruise control is not very responsive, old media screen is poor in daylight. I only use it for light loads, not heavy towing. I would buy another if reliability holds up.

Have had my Rexton Ultimate for 15 months of trouble free motoring! Watched all other major manufacturers issue recalls, Ranger, Toyota, Mitsy and the Ssangyong has given me good feeling inside just going about its business in total confidence. Rides well, tows brilliantly (I did get ironman suspension fitted) quieter than most of its competitors and 7.9l/100 on the highway with standard 6x 4 trailer loaded to 500kg max. Was initially hesitant because of Ssangyong financial woes but new owners KG have sorted this out once and for all. Tech is first class and seats are bigger than both Hilux/Fortuner and Triton. Best value 4WD on the market without a shadow of a doubt. Is it a Landcruiser-No it isnt, but I could almost get 3 for the price one pays these days for a LC300 and the 300 is barely one and half times the car in respect of capability and ride. I've owned two Ssangyong Mussos in twenty four years sadly I am amazed that in all that time they have not taken on board the issue with the rear central seat belt my old MK2 had this even though it was a five door estate in the twenty four years between my old MK2 and the new Mk6 they have not changed this.
Yet Ssangyong did listen to the owners club and dealer's in regards to the placement of the handbrake which for some unknown reason they stuck on the left hand side of the centre console in the MK4 which on a right hand drive vehicle was ridiculous I had a test drive of a MK4 and at six foot one even I found awkward to use this put me off but from the Mk5 they changed this .
It is noticeable that there are differences in the specs between countries, my new one is the Saracen short wheelbase below the long wheelbase called the Rhino (from the Mk7 called Saracen+) there is only one model in the long wheelbase.

Even with the optional ironman lift kit it only adds 40mm of lift. I know you can get a body lift for them as well but not really something I want to have to do.
