Korea was never a colony or ever colonized. It was annexed by Japan after Japan executed the south korea monarch. It was labelled a colonial protectorate by japan attempting to mimick european colonial powers. There was no migration of japanese colonialist to korea, just suppression and policing of the korean population. There was no recognition of an independent people, history or culture, but a systemic attempto wipe out everything that was korean to be replaced what is japanese. There was no colonial economic system, japanese simply took what they wanted, stole what was valuable, and killed everything else.

I think that it may have been nuked after Korean unification during the Fourth Corp War by Militech. Just like when Militech nuked Arasaka Tower in Night City by using Johnny Silverhand as their agent against Arasaka. Militech seems nuke happy. How is Arasaka more evil than Militech who nukes everything and takes over the NUSA military and their CEO becomes president?

    • @andrewcarter1747

Second Korean War? That's the wrong idea you got there. The Korean War NEVER ended. They never signed a peace treaty or the sorts, with the closest thing being the supposed Armistice. They simply stopped firing at each other, and the Armistice is simply a proof of that (Which the North had violated more times than you'd expect). So, at this point, the Korean War is still ongoing. It's simply a matter of who'll fire the shot.

There are lots of other wars in history that are sometimes classified different by different people. WW1 and 2 don't match up in East Asia and Europe, some argue that they were one war with a ceasefire, or war a European Civil War (or at least the part involving Germany. Personally I think these is kinda bullsh*t. A better example is the Hundred Years War, which was really more like four wars.

This scenario isn't that realistic, even considering the 90's, if that circumstances really did happened the possibility would be a uneasy diplomatic reunion for both sides rather than war, which would ultimately end in something similar to the Chinese government, but with more political parties (yep, NK has more political parties), war would be really unlikely, even the far-right South Koreans at that time weren't as stupid as to side with the Japanese, they did in the end of the WW2 as the US also support, but without the US, considering Japan expansion in this alternate universe? Definitely they wouldn't risk a war, uneasy reunion would be the way, and a cold war with Japan would ensue, which probably would just go south and take every US assets in the region regaining their colonial power in southeast Asia.
But, it is understandable considering the world building, they do need a over the top highly "corporatized" world full of wars in every aspect, hence why they did went beyond the real possibilities, but still more believable than Fallout.

The USSR doesn't seem to collapse at all in Cyberpunk. Also worth noting that Korea is caught in the Fourth Corporate War and apparently Busan is destroyed by Militech nuclear bombing.
Cyberpunk geopolitics are very interesting because they are nuanced. For example, Saburo is a stable leader, but also a Japanese nationalist who favours a fractioned North America. He supports Night City independence and the Free States against NUSA's ultimately failed attempt at American reunification. By 2077 Militech is too outmatched by Arasaka to do much of anything about it, and Arasaka seems to be looking for any excuse for a new war, perhaps to weaken them further.
Yorinobu, by contrast, is actually portrayed as 'pro-Western' (Saburo condemns him as a traitor). I wondered what this meant in practice for Arasaka policy? Saburo didn't seem keen on any Westerners, granted, but Militech and Netwatch are also at odds in Cyberpunk, and Netwatch seems to try to remain neutral. There is no 'West' per se, at least politically. I wondered if Yorinobu wanted to cut a deal with Militech to cede some land to them and perhaps turn his attention against the USSR, but Yorinobu doesn't actually seem keen on helping Militech either and after Saburo is assassinated there are non-stop rumours of an imminent war. So by 'the West' maybe they mean Europe. His planned deal with the relic was with Netwatch, which seems to control whatever is left of the European Economic Area (apparently not the Netherlands or Belgium, since Sweden are sinking their refugee boats xD).
It's a complicated setting. To make matters more complicated, Hanako is portrayed as a conservative, basically Saburoist, but Yorinobu clearly hates Saburo's vision, yet it is never made entirely clear what his vision is. The reasoning behind his original plan to make a deal with Netwatch is not clarified - at least in my first playthrough. I will have to try saving the Netwatch guy in the next one. ;) Michiko is mentioned as a "liberal" (whatever that means - she is also said to be sympathetic to NUSA, which seems to be a fascist dictatorship), but she seems to have little influence anyway. It's clear Yorinobu wants Hanako to die because she is potential competition and that Hanako basically wants to keep things as Saburo did, but it is never made clear what exactly Yorinobu wants to do so differently that he hates his father so much. Only that selling Relic to Netwatch is somehow involved, Saburo sees it as treason against Japan and pro-Western, and, whatever it is, it doesn't seem to imply any significant change to policies with Militech or NUSA, more a European deal, and it draws Voodoo Boys attention, if only because they are at odds with Netwatch.
This is one of the only alternate history settings I've seen that is confusing enough that I can say it really does feel like it could be the real world. ;)

@@toade1583 Not in your dreams. NUSA has trouble even keeping Texas at bay, let alone Arasaka. They lost the Unification War basically because Arasaka decided they would. That is why Arasaka has been welcomed back into Night City - they backed the free states and Night City in the war, and stopped them from being reconquered by NUSA/Militech. Arasaka was expelled over half a century prior, in another time, when Arasaka and Militech were more evenly matched. By 2077 it is clear that Militech is nothing more than a regional power. Arasaka is a global superpower.
It is Arasaka that is looking for excuses to go to war with Militech, probably to further weaken them, and Militech that is trying to avoid it. A single Arasaka carrier in Night City is enough for NUSA to back down from its pretensions of annexing Night City, and Arasaka has a hundred of them. There is no US west of the Appalachian mountains in Cyberpunk 2077. Culturally people obviously still remember being part of something called the US, and clearly retain a degree of cultural affinity, which is normal, but administratively and militarily they are separate countries, and both Saburo and Yorinobu seem keen on keeping it that way.
It looks a lot like Europe about 100 years after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

Cyberpunk 2077 Americans, at least the ones we see in and around Night City, are remarkably well educated, even the lower classes. Panam has a diction and command of English bordering on the poetic at times, and the rest of the nomads seem very well-read - better than Night Citizens, in fact. But even your average gangoon seems to have a reasonably coherent grasp of the world they inhabit, if you compare them with today's gangbangers. Those coprocessors must be working overtime. ;)

USSR seems not to have changed much at all. You meet some Soviets in Night City. From their descriptions we can surmise:
Soviet Union is a more stable, more peaceful, less violent place - mind you, so is Antarctica, and their murder rate is at the level of Caracas in our world, so may still be worse even than modern Russia. xD
They have more equal access to health care and basic needs.
They still seem to struggle with shortages of reliable consumer goods, as you come across a mission to klep cyberware from the corps and smuggle it back to the glorious motherland. ;)
But since things are so genuinely bad elsewhere in other ways, they seem more accepting of their system. And USSR was run like a corp anyway, so I'm sure they fit right in. Question for me is what is SovOil's role.

Our country is going broke and we are pushing more outwards instead of isolating ourselves and rebuilding our economy
Regardless of what many people think the world as a whole still revolves around the American consumer
If we don’t have money to consume things China fails, Europe Certainly has a economic depression, and the Middle East has no one to but their oil
As a result of worldwide economic turmoil we will have a 3rd world war
We as Americans simply need to keep making money and buying stuff or else the world collapses
