Yabushige is living a life of not so quiet desperation. He's desperate to be more than his ability allows. He's reaching for something that is always beyond his reach and serves those who can give him that inch that he needs to reach his goal. Well that's my take on this.

The best way to watch Soldier is to watch it for the very first time, right after watching the dreadfully aweful trailer. Even though Soldier has a bombastically awesome finally (it's all one can ask for. Balls to the wall action.). Where the trailer kind of promises something like Rambo: First Blood Part 2 in space, what you get is somewhere in between a what-if Universal Soldier on the surface and First Blood at its core. A man stripped of his humanity, figuring out how to be human. And, my god, this concept is underused. Sure, there's no lack in movies about soldiers coming to terms with their lifes after they finished their service or go into retirement. Yet in "blockbuster movies" you don't get to see this too often. And, my god, for someone who has less lines than some veterans have toes and fingers, Kurt Russell shows how acting is done. It's not the Mona Lisa of movies. But I still praise it for the many good things it offers.

People have screwed up their planet, they kill each other, they lie, they steal, it's just their normal behavior, you know, everyday thing. Then they go to a foreign planet, where they again lie, steal, kill and destroy everything that comes their way, and the film clearly showed what they want and how they want to achieve it. Do I really have to mention Hitler? So, who exactly is the antagonist here? You write here about betrayal, but he didn't betray the whole race, you deliberately exaggerated and distorted it, he was just trying to prevent genocide. The film also clearly showed that they could have collected the shit elsewhere, but they specifically wanted to go to only one place. And as for love, I see you are mixing it up with sex again, as simple-minded people do. Well, it was a shitty video with a one sided view of things.

The diatribe given by the rebel woman flying the plane seemed like pretty canned late 60s hippie communist boilerplate. I don't think Carpenter believed any of that stuff, I think he put it there as a parody. The woman is a villain right out of central casting from the late 60s/early 70s era. Watch Magnum Force--same hippie wack job characters. Look at what was going on in the US around then--we had tons of bombings done by Marxist hippies. By the time Escape came out, those characters were pretty trite. The twist where the President kills the Duke was the best part of the film--the Duke tortured the President, the revenge was sweet. I really think you went too deep on the President and this film--the themes are not that deep. It's parody, lampooning dystopia.

LOL. WB is apparently against free advertisement. On another note. I struggle with the problem that Soldiers are doomed to be forever changed and haunted by the horrors they have experienced through war. I know it is a very real thing and any person who experiences it for the first time risks any number of terrible outcomers when they are unable to quickly adapt. That being said. There is little to no historical records of such conditions in ancient wars. and wars were frequent and common back then because empires were still expanding. But i have never seen writings or accounts of PTSD from soldiers from Ancient Rome, or the vikings, or even as far back as the revolutionary army, and those were every bit as brutal, if not much more so. I am not saying it didn't exist. I am merely stating that there is basically no mention of it. Were men just built different back then? Was killing so easy that it was basically sport? Where are the PTSD survivors from those times. Do you think the Mongolian horde, or Vikings, or english Knights, or the Samurai and Ninja struggled with PTSD? It doesn't appear that way. So why is it so wide spread now?

I liked your interpretation of soldier. I would also just add that the films "Soldier" and "The Professional" from roughly the same era were in a sense two versions of the same story. Both had main characters who at approximately 40 years of age still had no idea how to be human. And then they ran into situations and civilians who taught them humanity.

Capitalism and Socialism are specific, modern, theories and schools of thought; ones that make a commentary and judgement about what is valuable, and how access and control of that value is managed, distributed, thought about, etc. To reduce them down to just describing whether either individuals or the state own the resources or 'control' the economy is way overbroad. How can a story have a capitalist economy if the society just fundamentally doesn't have the concept of 'capital'? We can have our own concept and apply it to that economy from the outside and say that fundamentally they're essentially doing a capitalism but they may not truly think in those terms, and, it's us who only see the surface level similarities. So it's important for sci-fi authors esp if they're thinking about this question, to just try and imagine different ways of beings defining value, and the different mechanisms under which a society might decide to manage that value, and then the structures that prop up the capitalist and socialist binary fall away. But then you have to do the work to build a world in which those don't automatically re-appear.

As a soldier deployed to Afghanistan, our job was to every morning clear the roads of IED's (Improvised Explosive Device). It was a tough job, but it was up to us to clear the way so that others can follow. Every morning, on the road by 6am, no one would really talk to each other, because you may be dead by the end of the day. Every night when we got back from the 13-16hr day, with no days off, it was a fucking party, something that I would never forget. I never laughed so hard from the practical jokes, or playing Xbox with the guys, it was a great time. Then we go to bed and start the routine over again. One day, our truck literally got cut in half. My back was broken and so were most of my teeth on my left side. Anyway, I really like what you said about returning soldiers. We are defiantly not the same as civilians. There is no way to do what we do and have emotions like civilians do. WE still do have emotions, its just turned down, way down. It took me about 10 years to reassimilate, but everyone still can see the military all over me after talking to me for about 2mins. What I'm trying to say here is that so many people have said to me "Thank you for your service.". YOU Have No Idea How Much That Helps. I believe it's a big reason why I was successful in dealing with my issues. I cant imagine how bad it was for the Vietnam guys, the suicide rate will tell you all you need to know about that. Your soldiers are one of your greatest assets. Instead of being scared of one, you should think of it as "Damn, we got a bad ass on our team." A soldier is a super civilian, they can work harder, for longer, without complaint. All you have to do is let them know that they are appreciated.

The President is repugnant from beginning to end because: On the plane, he does not really seem all that concerned that all the people he is leaving behind will die. He just gives a halfhearted attempt to explore other options then jumps in his escape egg and bails. He only cares that he will live. In the final escape scene, the President doesn't just shoot The Duke, (although we don't actually see him do it,) he halts Plissken half way up the wall, dangling him like a piece of bait while he guns down The Duke. Clearly he is out for personal revenge, saving Plissken is a secondary concern, if that. Lastly, when Snake poses his question, it is clear the President really is unconcerned with all those who died saving him. All that matters is that he is alive and his plans can march forward. You get the feeling he probably would have forgotten Snake's name fifteen minutes after the press conference had Snake not destroyed that tape. Plissken and all the others were just pawns he used and, when necessary, disposed of to ensure his own survival. Death Sentence: Realize that NYC as depicted in the movie is not a prison. It is not constructed out of any intention to correct or rehabilitate those thrown inside. It is a death sentence. Once you go in, there is no coming out. This was not only inflicted on the criminals deposited there, but on the citizens who failed to leave in time. Forget the Duke, he is a tyrannical, murderous, prisoner torturing despot. He probably deserved to be thrown in that nightmare, which is why he was so capable of taking power and turning it to his own purposes. Think of Cabbie. All he wanted was to stay in his beloved New York. Had he attempted to leave, he would have been gunned down by the guards just like any escaping prisoner, no questions asked. How many more like him were now trapped inside NYC? Surrounded by the worst dregs of society with no power, no food, no hope of escape, death the only exit. That was the true statement: cold hearted fascism punishing the guilty and innocent alike with no hope of parole or appeal.

I've never heard a take on a movie more wrong than yours, and it's obvious you weren't around in the days when it was conceptionalized and made. Like everyone else who wasn't around back in those days you give too much credit to the hippie protesters of the late 60's and not enough to the "silent majority", by the late 70's even most of the hippies knew they'd been wrong about thing's whether they'd publicly admit it or not, by then they were all just like their parents with a job preferably with a major corporation, a mortgage, a car payment and 2.3 kid's, including John Carpenter. You're way overboard in thinking that what the terrorist leader reads on the plane after they take control of it, that wasn't Carpenter or Nick Castle who he brought in to finalize the script making some kind of statement about America, they were simply using the typical kind of nonsense everyone was used to hearing from terrorists back then every time they high jacked a plane and read some kind of manifesto, the Red Army Faction and the Bader Meinhoff were saying that "imperialist police state" nonsense all the time in the name of "the workers of the world" when in fact any worker anyone knew back then were cheering for their deaths, they didn't speak for workers, how could they have? None of them ever worked and the real working people knew that and didn't want any of those idiots speaking for them. And here's a newsflash for you, everyone cheered when the President shot The Duke (even me and my name is Duke), yea we wanted to see the President kill him, and it's not because "he's our President and that's one of his constitutes", that's another example of you over thinking things, everyone simply wanted to see him unload a full magazine into him after what he'd put him through just being some guy, not being a President, he may have been a typical low life politician but when it came to what he was put through he was just some guy and low life politician or not he was many levels above a gang leader. You get so much wrong in your take on this movie, Carpenter has said himself in past interviews that people have a tendency to over analyze his movies, people look for meanings where there are none, they even try making meaningful things out of simple continuity errors. What the terrorist reads on the plane isn't Carpenter making a statement about America, they were simply using the typical nonsense you'd hear coming from plane high jackers back in those days to build a quick movie character. Nobody "didn't want to see the President kill The Duke", believe me when I say it was a cheer moment if there's ever been one in a movie. The Duke definitely isn't a character who has been victimized by his government and that's why he's in the New York prison, he's definitely a hardcore criminal who is where he belongs just like some guy in a supermax prison. You overthink just about everything about this movie, you expect and therefore create messages where there are none, some things are just simple and should be taken at face value.
