Park Tools: no one will ever watch a 10 minute bike tool commercial..
Seth: hold my beer
You should change this comment to Seth: hold my knobby knife
Hold my baby*
Park Tool actually _does_ make tons of videos that are essentially detailed "tool commercials," along with some more general educational and entertaining content.
Hold my LaCroix...
@@chrislukes9037 true. I use those vids to know how to use my tools to fix my bike
CM originally stood for ChainMate when we introduced the CM-1 in 1986, but Chain Massager has a nice ring to it đ€
why didnt you tell him its a 4th hand tool, not a 3rd hand tool? also gimme a job, i love u.
â@@Paios That's true! Our cable stretcher is known as the "fourth hand" as we had already introduced a "third hand" brake tool. The third hand was a device that held brake calipers together to make it easier to install the cable. Similar end result, different approach.
Hi park tool whatâs a good starter bike

The knobby knife was really intended for motocross knobbies that get worn down rounded really fast on rocks, and square knobbies give much more traction in mud and sand. It can extend the useful life of the tire. It's not that motorcycle tires are more expensive, they're just much much harder to change.
I was just about to make the same comment, I saw it and figured that would actually be really nice for motocross tires which have much bigger knobs than Mtb
Used to square up the knobs on my dirt bike using a hacksaw blade
Oh for sure. Have you ever tried to change a rear pit bike tire? Man, itâs hard.

The tyre knob cutter is mainly used for dirt bikes, the knobs are alot bigger so tyres last alot longer but the knobs round off pretty quickly so it helps to keep them feeling new.
A lot
That makes way more sense
I was thinking about my dirtbike while he was using that...
That explains the wide blade
Yeah Iâve got one for the dirt bike, I think itâs called the Tread Doctor
"If you use your screwdriver as a pry bar, you won't have a chisel when you need one..."
My chisel is a pry bar.
Lol
I've got a couple things to add as a bike mechanic
-there is an attachment you can get for your truing stand to true disk brake rotors, it can either be an arm that you can adjust in tiny increments and hear when it's rubbing, or it can be a gauge that has very fine measurements that are felt by a spring-loaded piston.
-Another thing that can work for pulling cables through a frame is a vacuum and either dental floss or fishing line. Feed it into one end and use the vacuum to pull it through the other hole, then similarly tape it to the cable.
Save yourself money and just use an old brake caliper on your bike as a truing gauge. That way however you tune or tweak it, that's how it will be on your bike.
This guy really knows how to make the most uninteresting ideas into the most interesting videos
wdym it's Hella interesting
I love specialized tools
@@NorroTaku not for everyone, like me i kinda dont care for the specialized stuff but i still watched this video lol

I don't think this video is the best example but you are right
I don't even ride, but Seth's video are always very interesting to me. I know a pretty good amount about a sport I don't part take in because of Seth. He makes great videos.
I just wanna state that the tire knob cutter thing, was originally designed for Dirt Bikes since the knobs wear out quickly and make a drastic difference which can often save you from injury.
Flat track riders never use stock tires, they cut their tires all the time.
9:22 me: *-looks at seth fixing tire knobs-*
Your knobs get rounded? Since when? Mine just disappear!
It was designed for dirt bikes because rocks round off the knobs more which are needed for corners
@@Hazeder422 ah yeah, that makes sense, cause my tires end up smooth instead of getting rounded knobs
@@Its_Captain_Jack_Sparrow noice, tho the street will become a slip n slide during rainy days
The third hand tool actually has a much more practical application. When you replace housing, it can be hard to get new ferrules seated all the way. Customer picks up their bike, shifts it, ferrules settle on there more, and now the bike shifts like garbage and the customer is unhappy. This is what a lot of mechanics call "cable stretch" because it makes it sound like it isn't their fault. The third hand let's you put tension on the housing to seat those ferrules completely so you know it is going to keep shifting well when it gets picked up and ridden. I use it on every new bike I build and every time I replace housing or ferrules.
It's not a third hand; it's a fourth hand. A third hand is a different tool
There are an incredible amount of bike tools, especially from Park Tool. While it would take a lot of work to make, it would be cool if you could review all of your maintenance tools, or at least the ones you use most often so that people new to mountain biking can take care of their bikes and enjoy them for longer.
A lot of home bike mechanics have a fair amount of tools, but that type of video may also be able to help them if they want to complete their collection but they don't quite know what they're missing.
He has done a video covering all the essential tools before. That's still very good and pretty complete
@@northbayoutdoors1408 but Seth does own a fair amount of tools...
That's a great idea! There are so many different tools out there for bike maintenance. It's easy to wonder which ones you need and which ones, like bottom bracket tools, fit your bottom bracket.
Video idea for Seth, Seth goes through tools he uses in his workshop and tries to recreate them/make them his self. Idk I just think it would be interesting to see his general DIY skills
This is a GENIUS IDEA!
GCN did something like that with a chain whip. On their show, hack or bridge section is replete with dummy hub hacks, which always get ruled a bodge.
If you like Seth's channel, you'll like GCN. Yes, it's for roadies, but they're fun.

Great idea! I never thought of that but it does seem quite convenient.

@@chalocolina3554 It will be a 3rd hand to me, as I don't have the other tool. Literally amazoning one right now. Never knew it existed and I am always fiddling getting the brake cables the way I want them. - Cheers
There is a tool that pulls tie wraps really tight and then cuts them off flush. I use them at work as an industrial electrician. They are really nice, but a good one is really expensive, upwards of $450 for a 1 trick pony.

I like it! Do another one. You are showing how technical bike repair can be but also how manageable it can be if you have the right tool for the job. Kind gives respect for the mechanics at our LBS and explains why they deserve a real wage for their efforts.
What a perfectly timed video. Im helping open a new bike store in Dallas, and we just got a bunch of these Park tools . Thanks for explaining/demonstrating these Seth!đ

The hot knife or tire-knob cutter you showed us isnât too uncommon in the 4wd community, in one shape or another. Itâs pretty cool. Iâd definitely consider it for shaping knobs on a work out tire that i could use in mud or something
I love these type of tool reviews! Great job Seth đ
Love these videos Seth, New MTB rider here and I've learned so much from you, thanks for everything.
The WH-1 is the most useful, underrated tool that Park makes. Literally all tasks involving a wheel are improved by using it. It boggles my mind when I walk into bike shops and see mechanics trying to set up tubeless or change a rotor with the wheel on the ground.
I agree. I don't have one, but it's on my wish list now!
1:46 - I have an old Park Tool CM-3 and it is called the "Chain Mate"
The Park DT-2 rotor truing tool is one of my favorite tools - it's surprising how many times I reach for it to get my rotors 'just right'
spoke wrenches also can remove presta valve cores too,
wd-40 in the chain cleaner works great for getting a dirty chain clean
Tire knob cutter - mostly for dirt bikes and flat track race bikes....far fewer knobs than a mtb tire!!!
2:34 this is one of my favorite multi-tools that I talk about in EVERY VIDEO EVER
There is lots of truth behind that
I've got the M19. Absolutely love it!

Yep I'm a proud eavesdropper. This stuff is fun to watch.
That tread cutting tool is really designed for dirt bike tires, Iâve seen people use it but itâs more or less the same thing you had to say about it.
tbh tho u can just flip the tire around and know you have another sharp edge on all the tiers so don't really know if the knobby knife or other similar products are worth it , especially considering you could just replace the tier for ÂŁ20
I am one of those eavesdroppers from outside the MTB community. I havent ridden a bike in literal years, I loved it and everything about it, I just never got another one after someone stole mine like 10 years ago lolol. MTB is dope though and I love watching yours and SingleTrackSamp
That chain cleaning tool works VERY well. I love it.
A bigger version of the knobby knife is actually used on offroad motorcycle tires to improve grip on them, since they dont have that many knobs it wont take as much time.

Used to use the tire knobby knife on dirtbikes sometimes, come in handy when you didn't really want to put a brand new tire on for a certain race but needed a bit better traction, or we v'd the knobbies for mud race when I only had a hard pack tire, surprisingly worked well in that situation.
I was one of those people that liked to eavesdrop on your activities through your videos. Now Iâve turned my Huffy beach cruiser into a bike for the local bmx dirt jump course and do my best impression of trials at the park while my kids play.
I can just imagine people using the knob knife on Nobby Nics, then turn them into Nobless Nics.

Seth you have helped me get into mtb and I am loving it thanks for the tips and tricks
I havenât went mountain biking a single time in my life but I enjoy watching your videos and Iâve been subbed for a couple years now
The Tire Knob Cutter would be more useful on a offroad motorcycle, much larger knobs that get round way faster
I'm curious as to how the knobby knife would have handled those hairs on that tire a couple videos ago.
When I'm doing internal cables, I use an old brake or gear wire and a magnet to guide the outer cable through the frame. Works like a charm, and it's way cheaper than the Park Tool one.
You left out a number of incredibly helpful tools such as a tube expander, spoke cutter (phil wood being my favorite), spoke punch, ultrasonic parts cleaner (far superior to the chain cleaner with the brushes), vernier calipers, impact screwdriver, riv-nut kit and seat tube reamer. Yes tube expanders are a real tool.
Even when we is sick with allergies, he still gives it all to make a video for us. People should respect you tubers like Seth more for working so hard!!!

Youâve developed the new child cave man look. Lol. Congrats on the new addition to your family.
I have at least half of those weird tools and they are quite useful. Nice video and I am sure that will help a lot of people. Thank you, Seth đ€ See ya
You can easily DIY that headset cub removal tool. Just use a piece of metal tubing, saw a couple of slots, bend them out a little and insert it like Seth shows. Not the most durable tool but it works really well for the odd time you need it!
Tried once with copper pipe and first attempt just destroyed it and I wound up getting the Park version.
Well, looks like Seth has just stepped up his rc crawler game with a tire cutting tool. đ
I use a dremel to freshen up the tires takes like 10 minutes each tire and the results are amazing
That tyre knob cutter looks like someone thought âWhat can I do to modify a soldering iron?â đ€ And bingo here it is.
Always fun to watch you bike tools videos, itâs helping me build up a toolkit (mostly Park Tools) and my latest addition is the Third hand Tool for the cables, got it on eBay (new but unused) for ÂŁ28 for my Brompton and my â94 Kona Cindercone. đ
Seeing another videi about this stuff would be awesome. Not that id buy anything but these kinds of old Seth bike hacks are just entertaining. And we all know that we would literally watch you doing the laundry.
Never been this early before damn
The knob knife is actually quite often used by pro mechanics. They cut down the middle knobs of heavy mud tyres in order to decrease rolling resistance (and therefore increase speed) without sacrificing cornering grip.
re: cable puller, yours and mine both have a locking mechanism which allows you to pull the cable, lock it in place at that tension, letting go of it completely, and doing fine adjustments on cable pull, testing travel at the lever, before locking it down. This allows you to start the barrel adjusters all the way in, for maximum adjustment as the cable stretches and brake pads wear off.
It can be especially nice when working on cheaper friends' bikes, as the cables on these can't take more than one or two clamping down, so it's nice to just have that brake cable tension dialed before even clamping once.
I would dare say this is a tool that's more useful the cheaper the bikes you work on! With better bikes, hydraulic brakes don't require this, and shifter cables don't need quite as much force.
When he said a lot of home mechanics dont have the cable puller, I was genuinely shocked. I use my cable puller all the time. Always when adjusting cables or new builds. That tool is a must have. As needed as a chain tool.
First hahaha, almost broke my finger clicking so fast

Ok, the 3rd hand tool rocks, I must get one! I usually grab with vise grips then pull and try to hold while I tighten the nut etc...that tool would make it soooo much easier.
The knobby cutter I would just make with soldering irons I already have. Most of these tools look decent and any job is easier with the right tool. Some of us don't do enough to have all the tools, but some of them would be a good idea.
I would probably fill the chain scrubber with oil, and let it rip. Scrape of the gunk and put on fresh oil. Good enough for me! I am not much of a bike cleaner, although i have not hot any really muddy trails. I tend not to ride those conditions.
I don't have any background in mountainbiking at all and yet I've watched Seth since the days before Berm Peak! He makes it so fun!
Wh-1 is the best tool you can have!! At our workshop we have for!! One for each mechanic!! We use them all the time! Tubeless, tubes!! Kassete, and and and!! Amazing tool!!
My shop got the CM-25 a few months ago and it was used a grand total of 2 times. Nothing beats spray-on degreaser and an air compressor to dry it off.

I have owned the crank brothers multitool for about a year now, and only until now did I know it has a spoke wrench. Seth... thank you brother amen đ
When doing spokes I have done them by sound before. The wheel I was working on was a high strength 20 inch wheel with spokes straight from the hub to the rim without crossing, I would flick each spoke and listen to the pitch it rang. If it rang low or didnât ring I tightened it and checked the spokes near it, if it rang high I loosened it. In the end I had a perfectly true wheel that would ring harmoniously when struck, the most satisfying thing Iâve done working on my bikes.
3rd hand is literally a hand saver. Itâs not my most used tool but when I need it Iâm so glad to have it
Thank you for showing me a tool that will help me with removing head caps I have been looking all over the place
