  • The Cayman is gone. It's sad, I know. But I did some deep thinking over the past couple of weeks and, in the end, got the best deal on a brand new GTI. I explain everything in the video.

    It took courage to make his move and I applaud you for it. I have owned a 16 autobahn gti and now an R, and I firmly contend that VW is the most under rated auto brand on the market. I reached for the 16 R because I felt it would depreciate less than he gti. But if you don't buy an autobahn, listing at 37255, depreciation isn't as big a concern wii the gti. The greatest all arounder in the world, the golf family.

      How is VW underrated. They are among the top 3 best selling brands in the world. Obviously they must be making sales to reach that level.

    I got the Mk7 as well and I must say, really regret not waiting to get a Golf R instead. These beautiful pieces of German engineering were built for speed and this car sadly doesn't have anything on the R :(( it is fun to drive tho but I always shed a single tear everytime I pass an R

    just got a 2010 gti two weeks ago! I'm in love with it. It's back at the dealership now, had a slow coolant leak and they've found a few faulty components. Hoses, pump, coolant temp sensor, and something else I forgot what he said. I suspect it was from the freeze and snow storm we had 2 days before I bought the car. When I test drove it, it threw a low coolant signal. They said that's weird, we should have caught that in the inspection. So we topped it off, thought nothing of it, and I took it home.
    The very next day after work, I got the low coolant signal again. Drove 30 mils to the nearest store that sells g12 coolant and filled it up, 2 days later low again.
    Took it back and they're replacing all the bad components with brand new ones completely free. Their 2 month used car warrant usually only covers power train but because their inspection sheet said it was all good to go when it was not, they're gladly covering the costs for me. GREAT dealership.
    If anyone is in colorado springs, Al Serra is a really good dealership. I believe they have a Chevrolet and a Volkswagen dealership here in the springs. Both new and used, in the same lot.

    Hey Chris, I just bought a 2017 GTI S from VW of Northampton, I love it! I wanted to let you know it's already going in for part replacement on Wednesday, the red led strips on the driver door stopped working. I brought it in to have it checked out and they don't just manufacture the led strip so I'm getting a whole new door panel.

    paid 25.8k with options like door guards, monster mats, roadside kit, infinity mirror. they also helped me with my upside-down trade... so not too bad in my mind. I think the only other tempting option was them offering me the APR+ tune that comes with warranty for $1500. they let me test drive their base S model with the tune and it's definitely awesome. once the car gets broke in a bit more I might do it.

  • @YasumotoUS

    Congratulations on your purchase. All solid reasons to divest yourself of the Cayman. I've considered a used Cayman, but my vehicle is currently not garaged, so I'd share similar concerns even living in the Mid-Atlantic.
    Shopping this model, I noticed that it has a front LSD. I am curious on how you find that additional drivetrain element in wet and snowy roads when applying [modest] power. Also, do you think that the LSD will make difference in how well the vehicle will handle the potential 300+ hp from an aftermarket chip? Thinking of the torque steer...

    • @YasumotoUS
      @YasumotoUS Před 7 lety

      In retrospect, my question was unfair as you've barely gotten through the car's break-in period. Good to hear re: snow as that's a major concern with that amount of HP / Torque and only two drive wheels. Look forward to the update in a month or two after you've had more behind the wheel time!

  • @Bayne83
    @Bayne83 Před 7 lety

    welcome to the MK7 family. I have a 2015 SE and i love it. As for tuning options you also have companies like Unitronic, and eurodyne which will allow you to flash back to stock at home with out having to go back to your tuner to remove the flash. But if you don't plan on upgrading the tune or needed to remove it then APR is a good choice. I went with unitronic because if was more of a mild tune compared to the APR one.

    Love the rawness of the 997. I could have gone 991 but I appreciate the 997 more. Friends with 991's had many issues with 2012/2013 991's.

    I sat in this car when it was in the showroom. Nice video Chris. Dose the DSG hesitate and jerk at low speed, especially when downshifting? I'm still debating to get a manual or DSG. It is a nice car in every way. Cayman 's clutch peddle is too heavy for me and the break too light. Visibility and practicality are nowhere close to GTI, and for daily drive, it dose not feel more fun either. The GTI doesn't come with auto light though, which is odd.

    • @qqsrx
      @qqsrx Před 7 lety

      Chris On Cars I like the Sport more than SE and Autobahn because of the plaid seat and the 5-spoke wheels, which look even nicer than the ones on the R. For a pure fun car, I would like to get a MX-5 (I know Chris Harris hates it). I test drove it. The ND Club is almost perfect. BMW M2 is another great choice, but I still prefer a naturally aspirated light weight car. Love to see more videos of your GTI VII.

      The R isnt the same price, its £4,000+ dearer - Its also considerably less well equipped than the GTi and based on most reviews not as nice to drive.
      But yes it is faster, realistically though in a GTi if you pull up at a set of lights 9/10 times you will have the fastest car there, which is good enough for most.

    • @acchaladka
      @acchaladka Před 7 lety

      You sound practically Canadian with all this perspective and patience shit. :) It's going to be _two bloody years_ between Euro release and us Canuckians getting it - we get things usually a full 18 months after the US gets whatever new model. It's infuriating.

    • @acchaladka
      @acchaladka Před 7 lety

      The release schedule is not much better with other brands; we also get inferior warranty offers compared to the US.
      About alternatives, good idea. So far I've test-driven:
      Mini Cooper S - too unreliable longer term, mediocre value for money and bad cargo space. Great drive and exhaust sound.
      Mx-5 - fun, but not for me
      Fiesta ST - super fun, but not for road trips
      Focus ST - Ford already went to Trump to complain about CAFE rules, so Ford is off my list
      Jetta GLI - fabulous for the girlfriend
      GTI - pause. hmm.
      Golf R - serious pause.
      Volvo S60 or V60 T5e - my heart goes pitter pat for the T6 R version. Very pretty exterior.
      Volvo V40 with new engine is coming to Canada in 2018/9 allegedly - I'm extremely interested.
      Of all of these the Golfs are the best all around. Not usually a winner in any single category but nothing really is the full package the same way. I'm going to stretch my TDI buyback for as long as possible before I get either the GTI or a Volvo - literally been trying everything else to find something better but only Volvo has piqued my interest so far.
      Suggestions always welcome.

    Dude, if it;s just winter that prevented you from keeping the Cayman then you should've gotten a $2,000 beater Subaru for snow days. It is obvious that the Cayman just did not click for you. Porsche is like that: You either fall in love instantly and never get bored, or you never quite get it but keep telling yourself that you do like it just to justify the purchase. I think you did the right thing and on time got rid of something you did not quite like. Hopefully it is not a slippery slope where your car ADHD takes on an expensive journey of constantly trading and moving depreciating assents around a.k.a cars. That's a recipe for poor house and eventually divorce.
    I traded in my 2013 GTI MK6 autobahn addition (APR stage 1) fully loaded for my 2008 Boxster S and never looked back. I wanted to get a beater as a daily, but I love driving this thing so much so I gave up on that idea. I drive it everywhere. I personally don't like lot of electronics and gadgets in my sports car. I like to take stuff out. Subwoofer, out. Radio, out. No power seats or any other distractions. My Boxster is as plain as liberating as it can be, which is the essence of Porsche. Raw, efficient, plain, but quality sports machine. It is the only car that I love driving even more now, than the first day I bought it. Like I said, yo either fall in love or you don;t. I certainly did and still am :)

      Chris, it sounds like the Cayman was not the right car for you. Seems like you value acceleration/stereo/technology/fun commute car/deep exhaust note/practical storage space. Why don't you take a look at the Macan Turbo instead of the 911? Seems like that would fit all your criteria.

      Chuy Cruz I'd pass. You'd be better off just buying a new GTI then having to pay that much for used. 24k is somewhat high in miles imo for a performance car. For all you know it could have issues.

    I wanted a 911 and drove it several times, maybe 5-6 and just couldn't pull the trigger. Drove a Cayman S and bought it on the spot. I did some minor mods, catback and corner balancing. That car would hang with ANYTHING if there were a bend in the road. I have since had a 911 and still enjoyed the Cayman more. I also have a 17' GTI, great car too!

    I tried to buy a 2dr GTI S 6spd from Colonial on Aug 27, 2016. They made offer, I took out my USAA credit card....AND....they refused to sell me the car. It was all cash, yet I needed @ least 4-5 biz days to have balance of $$ transferred. They thankfully they refused "Must be an August car, Incentives go away!!!". Curiously, Incentives go away before Labor Day Event? No incentives existed on GTI. They refused the sale. I waited to Sept 1...car was still on Colonial lot, but I called Dealer closest to me, Minuteman VW. They had no 2 doors and basically brushed me off....however I told them to look. Ultimately Wellesley VW (Part of the Colonial Group) offered same car @ $225 less. I texted Minuteman, "Thanks for efforts". Response was "That's a very nice price..." (pause)..."We'll be it by $500". So due to Colonial not selling me the car, I waited 5 days & saved $725.00+ (prices were "in my driveway). Funny thing was that I had the liquidity, it would have been a 5 min wire transfer had I called financial folks. The people at Colonial were exceedingly friendly and pleasant, yet their "sales technique" and "dealership needs" usurped all. Minuteman VW is by far the best VW Dealership in/around the Boston Metroplex. No matter what, VW is a fantastic brand. Enjoy!

    • @davidfuhrer6679
      @davidfuhrer6679 Před 7 lety

      Thanks Chris & Bernard. I didn't dislike Colonial VW, however it was too heavily branded & antiseptic. It "felt" corporate & all about arithmetic, but very professional. Minuteman VW was the best "walk in" Car Dealership experience I've ever had...and I only "walked in" AFTER buying the car. VW is a fantastic brand, but its obviously been tarnished very badly--& to an extent too much so (My Wife got an Audi Q7 in Nov, I only visited Nashua Audi once, and they had a "TDI Clean Diesel" ball-cap in a case, which I was more excited about buying than the car!!). My personal opinion (yes, worthless!) is that the VW Brand needs Dealers like Minuteman as Ambassadors...far more personalized, relaxed, and engaged (I was absolutely not a monthly statistic). The next couple of years is going to be doom and gloom in the auto industry and perhaps the economy as a whole. Just like housing was the bubble to the "Great Recession", a slew of sub-prime auto loans exist and leasing has skyrocketed. Ultimately, those sub-prime loans are going to burst & used car valuation is going to crater. For the mass-market Brand's (Honda, GM, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai...and VW)...it's going to be survival of the fittest, and VW already has a "broken nose". Interesting times! Keep up the cool channel Chris!! -David

    • @davidfuhrer6679
      @davidfuhrer6679 Před 7 lety

      Spot-on Bernard! Apologies Chris for "hijacking" your channel comments. I remain clueless as to why US/CAN are "tossed" exceptionally soft cars from fantastic mass-production manufacturers...all of whom possess & sell far more engaging models on their home soil & in Oceania, etc? Literally every car resource that reviews a true drivers offering, does so in Europe and concludes "But, don't wait for it to arrive on US shores, because it won't be coming to our shores". VW Scirocco!!! BMW has just gone off-kilter soft...the trade on the Q7 was a '16 BMW 3 series "Touring"---thankfully a Company bought car, so I didn't take a "bath"...but it was horrid & optioned out to the maximum...steering feel was akin to an '82 Buick Century. I lack the requisite PHD in Electrical Engineering to drive the Q7. Finally, my "gut" tells me that, US/CAN consumers are "over" researched/poked/prodded by Manufacturers...and the belief is that we WANT soft cars, thus they avoid incurring the cost of introducing a new model that the market analysts tell them will "fail". You're correct, the cost of diesel is too low in the US & the cost of going "clean" is obviously too great. Yet, how do you explain BMW having a single "touring" on offer in the US, and the ability to have it w/ a diesel? Please....name a brand/model that fulfills my very basic requirements---European, Manual, Cloth Interior, No Sunroof...VW & Volvo(?)

    I used to drive a Mk5 GTI. I had the ECU upgraded with APR for 91 octane to approx. 250 hp. It was no fun to drive as the front tires spin even on slightly damn surface. Your Mk7 S has better LSD, but with APR at 316 hp, I think you will have a hard time to put the power down. Now I drive a 2016 Golf R, there is no problem full throttle on wet surface. Probably next summer I will upgrade the ECU, and I will be looking at around 360 hp!!!

      Jake Reese the VAQ locking diff actually improves traction so much that acceleration times sit between a normal fwd golf and the 4motion system in the R on slippery surfaces. I've driven mine in 20 inches of fresh snow without issue. Mind, using studded tyres in Sweden - never go cheap on tyres!

    • @ReesesHistoryPieces
      @ReesesHistoryPieces Před 7 lety

      onehorsepower tyres are a huge factor. So you are saying that you drive a fwd GTI and have very little issue with traction? This is the type of things I need to hear about in my decision between the GTI and the R.

    • @onehorsepower
      @onehorsepower Před 7 lety

      Jake Reese Of course in snow, fat chance in getting all the power down in either car. Also a R will spread the power evenly which is an clear advantage in a curve in slippery conditions. I have a fun snow vid in my channel with a R32. But in a GTI you still have a hand brake which evens out the fun stakes a bit. At the same time in summer time, the 4wd makes the car a bit dull imho, the fwd is more alive. Either way, with good winter tyres, winter traction to get to your destination is absolutely no issue. Most owners here skimp on tyres when 4wd so that, again, evens things out. This is coming from someone that drives a GT86 in scandinavian winter, compared to that, the fwd vaq feels like 4wd traction ;)

  • @adammarkowitz7944
    @adammarkowitz7944 Před 7 lety

    Okay, people. I hear what you're saying about a manual transmission. It's just that modern double-clutch systems like DSG are quicker than manuals. But it''s not just that on paper you're half a second ahead--it's that it's so much easier to extract more performance--because most of us are not going to shift from third to second in a manual if in second you're turning 5000 RPM--but with the DSG you do. There's no clutch to worry about and no rev-matching to do. In this car you can use 100% of the power; yes, a highly skilled driver might take the same liberties with a manual, but, probably, less of the time. The DSG shifts so much faster than any of us can shift a manual. The Golf R is a good example--.7 sec quicker with the DSG, and so much more fun. I test drove both before I bought my 15 GTI. No contest.

    They didn't "take care of the sales tax for you". You only pay sales tax of the difference between the trade-in value and the price you paid for the car. I'm guessing the trade in was close to the price of the GTI ~26k so you weren't obligated to pay any sales tax.
