I disagree with him. His best live performance ever of this song in my opinion was their 'Queen at Wembley' gig in 1986.. Totally amazing! But I understand why, The Rock in Rio gigs were some o the biggest in the world and the crowds were wild and that is a pinnacle for rock bands, But their performance at Wembley was far better.

38 years ago January 11, 1985 I was there. One of the most memorable records in the history of rock was the British band's participation in the festival. The group's first day of performance brought together around 300,000 people, the biggest audience for the show that year. “We Are The Champions”, “Love of My Life”, Radio Ga Ga” and “We Will Rock You” were part of the show. Such a historic milestone, the presentation was portrayed in the film “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

You can almost imagine that promoter saying "it's a tough audience tonight" Freddie "hold my beer", he then proceeds to command every single person with a movement of his hand. That is why Freddie Mercury is the greatest frontman of all time. There was nobody like it before him and nobody like him since. To have a crowd of that magnitude sing one of your songs word for word perfectly is the best thing to hear. Freddie & Brian so humble to let the crowd have their moment. The greatest rock band ever. I saw Freddy and Queen on several different uk tours in the late 1970' until 1986 at Wembley. This song is a favourite of the crowd and is sung word for word with Freddy and Brian May by the crowd. Its always a very very special moment as it shows Freddies command over the crowd and the love everyone is feeling.Freddie was the greatest frontman ever and this song demonstrates that to perfection .
I have been in crowds of 70,000 when this has been sung by a largely English audience so for this song to be sung word perfect by 300,000+ by a largely South American audience who first languages are either Spanish or Portuguese demonstrates Freddie talent, personality and character and the world wide success story that Queen was and are

When they did Rock in Rio again in 2015 I believe and Brian May played the guitar and sang the song with the crowd and then asked them to turn on the lights on their phones and Freddie comes on the screen to sing the last verse. "Rock in Rio" festival that was headlined by Queen in 1985 had approximately 250 000 people in attendance. They actually played two shows at this festival in the span of a week in front of such vast audience.
As to "Love of my life" - live versions are very different than a studio one (I HIGHLY recommend it - it's gorgeous). And every live performance you'll find on youtube is pretty different than any other one.

The most impressive thing to me was that in a recent research made by a federal departament here in Brazil, we were presented with the information that less than 2% brazilians compreehends english, even to speak. That statistic by nowadays, so in 1985 we were less than that for sure (I am brazilian).
So, having that crowd singing along, makes this much more incredible.

The thing with Freddie, was not just that the crowd worshipped him, but that he reciprocated their feelings, which in turn drew their best response. A true entertainer. One of the very best in history. I have been a massive fan since I first heard Queen back in 1973. That they named their '75 and 76 albums after Marx Brothers movies was pure genius and are probably my favourite Queen albums.

I cried. This is love and it Is powerful. I dont think queen has done a better performance then this, but I have to say that every song they did is a good one.

I am Brazilian, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, site of the Rock in Rio festival. In 1985 I was only 4 years old.
It is estimated that over 300,000 people attended Queen's concert on January 11th and around 250,000 more on January 18th.
Freddie Mercury was unique and we will never have a voice as memorable and unmatched as his. There would be no replacing the legend, the voice comet called Freddie Mercury.

I was there! 😎 The first, and the real, Rock In Rio. You have no idea what was that. 10 days of attractions. Bands we only knew from far away, without internet and cellphones! That images didn't get half of the people. In total was 300 thousands person. Only in this show, singing along with us, there was 100.000 people!! It was the end of 30 years of dictatorship in Brasil, and we came from all around the Country to this shows, celebrating freedom and love. ❤

Freddie amava davvero tanto Mary.

    Bisscute Darling,
I ALWAYS love your reactions to Queen & to Freddie... This may be my FAV of your reactions so far!
As others said, the audience was at least 250,000. (The maximum would've been 400,000; at the festival, there was an "open gate"... ticket holders could come and go, and still listen to the music outside as well.)
Oh, AND... this audience did NOT speak English!
