  • Turn On The Haunches Dressage. In this video, I will show you how I start to teach a horse turn on the haunches. I start with groundwork exercises to help him understand the aids and then I move on to show you in the saddle. These exercises show you how to steer and turn a horse and are the beginning of shoulder-fore, shoulder-in, and walk and canter pirouettes. These are basic horse training groundwork exercises for horses.

This was one of the hardest things I had to learn to teach my horse but it really helps their suppleness. I hope this video makes it a little easier for you to understand how you can teach your horse to move his shoulders. Thank you for watching.

another wonderful video, I'll be trying this tomorrow. Bending the head was a great piece of advice, I would never have thought it so useful. Thank you so much!!

Excellent video! I always enjoy them! So straightforward and easy to understand. I completely agree with using a combination of riding or groundwork to help the horse understand what you are asking. So much frustration can occur with just trying to teach in riding alone. In teaching my horse to side pass, I often had to get off and do it from the ground to reinforce what I was asking. Love your videos!

Thanks so much fort this Josie. I am training a young four year old and really appreciate your perspective on how horses "first" learn certain of these movements. Your early ride on Rebel that you video'd was so helpful for me. Thanks!

Would this method with the crop tapping help with a horse falling to the inside as well? My young horse is bad about drifting in but with his outside shoulder bulging out so my outside rein helps him go straight again but he will still flex inside and drift inside still. Mostly on when tracking right but I’m struggling with how best to help him. He understands side pass and half pass aids so will just stay drifting 🤣

Keep working on it. Our horses, like us are a work in progress. 🙂

Total load of rubbish. In shoulder in, the rider controls the shoulder and the horse moves away from the bend. Much better to do it ridden. If that was what you were explaining, sorry, was very convoluted explanation

I was teaching turn on the haunches (hence the video title)and not shoulder in. I was showing the VERY beginning of how I teach shoulder control to young/green/confused horses. Calling this rubbish is both rude AND shows your lack of attention 🤨
