    The reason this movie is set in 1981, aside from wanting to capture the feel of the grungier New York City of the 70s and 80s, is that the 80s was when the US government slashed funding for mental health. All over the country, publicly run mental health institutions closed down, and programs like the one Arthur is portrayed attending for therapy and medication WERE shut down when their funding was pulled. I think one of the strongest thematic messages present in Joker is that our society doesn't care about people who struggle with their mental health...that we only acknowledge them when they act out violently.

      Amazing how the gov didn’t have money to continue to fund mental health, but it has trillions for the “war on drugs.” That’s because as long as the alphabet agencies continue to place drugs on the streets, the military and LE will have a blank check to “fight” drugs.

    What I like about Joker is that while it does it's own thing, it has some hallmarks from the character. Like how the Arthur Fleck as a person is a complete mystery. By the end, he's neither a Fleck nor a Wayne...

    As many times as we've seen the death of the Waynes on film, this is the only time it's been an assassination. Also, Batman and Joker are both on the same night. After shooting Murray, Arthur laughs his first genuine laugh. Not a fake laugh, not his condition, but a real, honest laugh. His transformation into Joker is complete. And within hours, the Waynes are murdered, and Batman is born.

    Great reaction guys. I have one main thing to clarify instead of listing things. In 2 out of the 3 major mainstream versions of Batman, Joker is way older than Batman. Romero was about 20yrs older than West in the series and Nicholson was about 15yrs older than Keaton in Batman 89. Only in the Nolan one's was Bale older than Ledger. So it bugs me when people say that joker is too old here to be the Joker. If we take it at face value that Arthur's mom worked for the Wayne's when she had him 30yrs ago, Arthur is in his 30's here and Bruce looks like he is around 10. When Bruce becomes Batman in 10 years, he will be in his 20's and Joker in his 40's. So the age difference definitely works here.

    • @tonysoto8949
      @tonysoto8949 Před 2 lety +14

      Great points and I have argued the same with all the whiners who complained about the age difference. Take also into consideration that although Arthur is in his early 30s he looks much older because of the hard life he has lived to that point. Not eating much, the stress of taking care of his biological mother cuz no way he was adopted. People also say Arthur was not smart and maybe on the dumb side but if you see his progression by the time he is on the show he talks very intelligently and well smart enough to see that the show brought him there to humiliate him.

    “All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy.
    That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.”
    It's a quote from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke graphic novel. It's clear certain parts of the film were inspired by the comic book, especially the Joker's slow slide into him becoming the Joker. It also has the fact the Joker always changes his story on how he became the Joker, not being a reliable witness.

      @@fynnthefox9078 Well yeah, the Joker thought he could break Gordon and make him just like himself, but he was wrong. He even tries to compare his own situation with Batman, but Batman took his brokenness and his pain, and used it to help others. While the Joker only uses his own pain and broken psyche to harm the rest of Gotham.
      It's why I've always liked the Batman comics, it's a pretty optimistic view, to use your trauma to help others and not allow it to ruin you. All of Batman's villains are broken people, just as Batman is, but it's how they each deal with it that makes them different.

    • @Torthrodhel
      @Torthrodhel Před 2 lety +3

      @@My-Name-Isnt-Important yeah the moral of the story is a pretty good one. It doesn't only take a bad set of events to turn you into a monster, you have to have some of that inside you to begin with, it's a necessary ingredient. People with that ingredient might go into denial and not want to think it's true, and so might seek to 'prove' otherwise. I mean damn, isn't that the common self-justification behind any and all evil acts, pretty much most of the time? To imagine that nobody else is any different "deep down". When in truth most of those justifications aren't ever tested, and whenever they are, are usually debunked.
      I personally interpret Batman's ramping insanity at the end as a sort-of admission that he has that monster inside him too (but doesn't want to give in to it like the Joker does). He's a guy who controls it and focuses it as a utility for justice. He keeps to a code in order to not fall to the lack of one. But he's definitely out-there too, and that's kinda funny in the moment, and he lets go of a little bit of control from just how unusual it is that he's amused in that way. Of course we're not shown the end the result, but maybe that's the point, to not truly know, as perhaps Batman himself can't.

    A majority of the NYC/Gotham settings were true to life events. NYC was broke in the 80s and it was a very violent decade. Broadway was a dangerous area filled with porn theatres. Social services were cut, the murder rate was at all time highs. The piled up garbage was due in part to the 81' sanitation workers strike. In 84' four men were shot and killed in the NYC subway after a botched robbery, which Scorsese references. They really captured the ambiance of 80s NYC.

  • @Mr.Batsu12
    @Mr.Batsu12 Před 2 lety +15

    I've always viewed the scene after Arthur shoots the guys on the subway as the first time in his life he's stood up for himself and won. He's overwhelmed with the joy of doing that even though it resulted in three deaths. It's like he's taken the step past the point of caring about others and finally realized he needs to care about himself most of all.
    I hate the idea that they are making a Joker 2. This movie succeeded because it walked that thin line of being given the OK to make it and the studio not thinking it was going to be able to do much so the higher ups didn't get involved with creative decisions much. Since it was such a success you know the higher ups are going to be all over this and ruin it.
    Since Spider-Man No Way Home was such a success Hollywood has decided that cameos are the latest fad to make movies a success. They will likely put tons of random cameos into Joker 2 and absolutely ruin it - just like they ruin 90% of all movies about superheroes.

There's a very famous line of dialogue from The Joker in that story where he says to Batman " sometimes I remember it one way sometimes another but if I'm to have a past I prefer it to be multiple choice" so yeah basically confirming that even The Joker himself doesn't really know what was real and what wasn't

    Oh my dears, you're reaction seems like it was exactly like mine the first time I saw it. I tho cried throughout, off & on. It was such an epic, absolutely phenomenal movie. Taking a comic book character and making him real and feel empathy and love and caring for him was so amazing. It took me awhile and watching it a few more times, to let it all sink in and wrap my head around it all. I absolutely loved it!!!! 😍❤👍💛👏👏👏👏👏 Joaquin winning the Oscar was SO well deserved! His performance and the music and directing and cinematography and lighting was just all spot on and sent chills down my spine and goosebumps on my skin, even when I just saw the trailers of this. I think it touches so many of us, as you said too, bcs there are these issues and problems going on in our world & societies, esp where mental illness or poverty or even bullying etc... Gets swept under the rug and not dealt with properly and there's never enough funding from Govts to help those who most need it. So we end up with all these mass shootings going on and homelessness is rampant in the mentally ill community. It's a disgrace and I'm so thankful this movie was made to put a spotlight on it, using Joker. Cuz it reached millions more then if it was just a movie about a man with mental illness. Of course he suffered from many issues, childhood PTSD, his laughing disorder, he naturally would be narcissistic (since his Mother was, and he had all his grandiose delusions). So basically he started out a good person, but his childhood and society turned him into a serial killer who finally felt like he mattered and had numbed his truest nature of goodness. It's a heart breaking yet truly beautiful movie to watch. Even the ending, you were like me, almost feeling bad for smiling and cheering on the chaos ... Yet I don't think any of us should feel bad. Cuz I think so many of us kinda related. Maybe some moreso. Even tho we don't condone violence.. It just seems like redemption for him. And it does make you smile. ☺ Peace and wellness to you sweet ladies. Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed it and hope you read this. 🤗
    Edit add-on: I agree about everyone has some craziness, we do but most can control and handle the madness, for some i think it's too much and they tip over the cliff of craziness to madness... Then you have serial killers, mass shooters, etc... They can't handle the craziness and want to end it all. So they hurt others bcs they hurt, and then they get caught and consequences. It doesn't make what they do ok, never, but this movie so eloquently shows perhaps the process of creating a madman. Taking a tiny soul,child and putting them in a violent, neglectful childhood then sending them into a cruel world where they are bullied and perhaps can't cope or associate. It's really a dreadful synopsis of events that lead people to these deeds and actions. I, along with millions, was cheering Arthur on! Would I cheer on a mass shooter or serial killer in real life... Prob not. But this movie just helped us understand those who suffer, truly suffer with conditions out of their control and have empathy and yes, give a cheer when they get a bit of redemption. Ok.. I'm off my soapbox lol 😄
    Truly a masterpiece, epic. And Joaquins performance was phenomenal. Cuz it was SO physically demanding yet he barely ate to get so skinny for this role. And also the emotional toll it must have took for him to master this character with all its many layers. Absolutely the best performance I've seen.... Ever! ❤

    There are some multiversal stories that shows either we dislike or like the characters. For example; this Joker movie is one of the best. Shows an example of what creates a reasonable villain. My thoughts: being ignored and bullied by rich and oppressive characters, killing is good enough for him to cease the corrupted life between rich and poor. One great quote of him being good is "I just don't want to feel so bad" and what do other people do? They either tried to reason with him or being an ignorant and heartless citizen. It is a great video, shows of how the world itself revolts to one another.

    1:58 I like that viewpoint! Reminds me of this one recent interview that Kevin Conroy did with a few fellow voice actors pertaining to Batman: ultimately there's a version of Batman that someone is always into! Whether it's the comic 60's West vibes, or the dark and vengeful vibes of Pattinson, there's a Batman for everyone to enjoy!

    3:58 "This isn't going to be a movie that makes me cry is it.....?
    4:06 "Is he laughing instead of like, crying?"
    I had to stop it there and let you know that, yah, that's laughing instead of crying, or as Forrest Gump once said, "Maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time....."
    I can relate to this way tooo much right now but let's go for the ride again shall we? Better than sitting here crying, instead of like, laughing, right?
    is it a crime to try and kill two birds with one stone and feel em both for the same price?

    Next time you re watch this film I recommend looking out for clocks because most of them say a specific time which if I remember correctly is 11:11 which is seen with a quick flash of Arthur in the hospital banging his head near the beginning of the film when Arthur punches the clock clearing out his stuff after being fired and also just before he shoots Murray on stage but that third clock is half an hour before 11:11 which makes me think he goes on stage and then ends up at the hospital for 11:11 and the scenes with the psychiatrist at the Beginning aren't real because that clock in the background says 11:11 as well it's tough to work out completely what in Arthur's mind and what's real but keeping an eye out for the clocks i believe is a big help

    I know it’s simple and sort of cliche, but I like the symbolism with the stairs comparing Arthur’s mentality on life.
    At the start he’s ascending though painstakingly slow and sluggish. Then later on as the Joker he’s cheerfully dancing down the steps happily spiraling into self-destruction. Funnily enough with the cops now chasing behind him.

    I was in a car accident in the late 90's.. I had a severe concussion, amnesia and permanent memory loss. I had to 'relearn' my entire life and forgot A LOT of it. To this day, if I don't speak to you within a couple months, I forget you exist. Literally.. Seeing the 'they treat you like you don't' quote really hit me.. People don't understand I'm NOT normal in my head. What is normal for people doesn't work for me. I need a routine, boring existence. I tell people at work I have brain damage and my memory is poor. It's just a joke and they say 'oh, me too! I'd forget my head ...".. That pisses me off so bad! Nothing I can do but cause drama so I just tell them they've been warned, repeatedly. Then, I forget something and becomes me not caring about the situation.. Nobody cares to understand because you don't really matter to them... It is what it is.

    Hey guys! first of all, I loved your reaction, you had such interesting commentary on it and a fun, genuine reaction, I felt you were genuinely interested by the story and the movie, overall great video! I just have a few comments in regards of the movie about things you might have not gotten or you didn't get at first probably as well as things that are impossible to guess without some prior contextual knowledge.
    In regards of Arthur's origin/parents the ending is open ended, one could say that since Penny Fleck had mental issues she could be making all of that up in her mind since she has many problems and has suffered through a lot, incluiding abusive relationships which she is in denial of; but on the other hand this could all be a setup to cover Thomas Wayne's relationship with Penny, first of all because he doesn't want the rumour of an affair tarnish his prestige and name in Gotham and in the industry and also because he doesn't want to be linked in any possible way to a mentally ill woman or that someone can suspect of it, that's why he fired her in the first place, even moreso now that he's running for a public charge or positioning himself for a pre-candidate position in an upcoming election.
    It is possible that Thomas Wayne did father Arthur and with his power, money and connections he hid it all, besides this, the doctor you see interviewing and filling the forms with Penny is Dr. Stoner who is one of the most vile, criminal and corrupt higher ups at Arkham at that time, he would take bribes and accept money to beat up and put criminals and mental patients in terrible conditions, mess with people's minds and deprive them of food, water, medicine, basic needs, so it's not an outrageous thought that he could have accepted money to errase Penny's records and fill her file with different information, mess with her mind and lock her up for a time there.
    There are also other hints in the movie, like the adoption papers, which were much less worn, wrinkled, aged, that the other documents on Penny's expedients and records (which could be a way of saying that it was a much later added document to her file or a forgery) and also the picture signed T.W. which was on Penny's dresser which Arthur wrinkles in his hand towards the end. Those are just a couple of examples of this.
    Besides this, talking about Arthur's condition, it is said (not specified) that he has multiple metal conditions (which were intentionally made difficult to tell appart in the script) and of them was the laughter condition Arthur experiences and that is a real nervous system and mental health condition called Pseudobulbar Affect, you can look it up yourself so you don't take my word for granted.
    I also think this is a great movie that reflects the downward spiral of a person brought down by society, beaten down by the upper classes and left to fend for himself with no-one to rely on, to care for him nor to show him the right path through life, it's pretty sad and shocking and it's exactly what it should be, what a raw movie or a Joker movie should be. Also well, Joaquin Phoenix's interpretation was amazing, he rightfully deserved every ounce of that Oscar he got.
    Sorry for the long comment, I hope this is of some help to you or you find something new or interesting, also, again, excelent, amazing reaction to a movie that is barely reacted or talked about even to this day. I just stumbled upon your channel today and I will definitely watch some more, thanks guys!!!

      Thank you so much for the kind words and interesting thoughts! I like how ambiguous everything is regarding Thomas Wayne-it's frustrating to not know the reality of the situation, which I'm sure is similar to how Arthur feels.

      @@EricSarahReact Thanks! Yes, it's an intentional callback to how in different comic and storylines Joker's backstory is always blurry, messy uncertain, multiple choice, open ended and/or open to interpretation, it was definitely an intentional choice and again, great reaction guys!!! I'll stick around for sure!
