In this GMBN Vs EMBN, we're looking at three aspects of speed! Climbing, technical singletrack and descending. Which bike comes out on top? As we sum up in the conclusion, any bike has the capacity to be fast...it all depends on who's riding it...but this sure was a fun test!

Before I switched to eMTB I felt like an alien in the forest (of Dean).
On the parking lot I see 90% driving a diesel, 40% smoking (fake) cigarettes and 30% are overweight (and 20% are wearing ridiculous armour).
Pushing up the bikes takes them half a day and than they make it down and drink a beer to celebrate.
When I pass by pushing pedals a max to speed up the push up trail some moan "you are cheating".
Well I'm cycling and you are pushing my friend.

I've been riding MTB and Road bikes since the mid 1980s. I have a great baseline fitness, and I can't wait to get an ebike for some of the longer trails I have ridden for years. I'm assuming, based on the mode used, a person can still maintain their baseline fitness, with an eMTB. I have never understood the hate for ebikes. It doesn't make any sense to me. Who cares so much about how or what other people ride, unless you are in a competition with them? I'm getting to the age I can't push like I used to, and still recover well. I ride moto cross and technical trails on my motorcycle, and after a full day of that, I feel almost as hammered as I do after a full day on my regular MTB. When I have the power of my motorcycle, I ride harder, tackle much more technical terrain, and still get my HR up to where I get it on a bicycle. Granted, if I want rest, I can get it and still fly down a trail. I would think an eMTB would be harder than a motorcycle, but easier than a regular bike. I would like to have the option. Especially when I ride with my friends who are 15 to 20 years younger than me. Thanks for the channel and the great videos. I plan on buying an eBike for my 50th bday present! :)

Love the comparison and am glad that those E-bikes exist. Steve is a bit older and I'm sure he could not have gone up that hill as "fast" as Neil did or enjoy the downhill afterwards as much. Therefore this bike is amazing and this ride was great fun for both. That's what you want with your friends, isn't it?

Loved the banter and the comparison, very enjoyable video Steve and Neil. I'm a new subscriber and I enjoy waking up to have a coffee while I watch the latest shenanigans from your channels - whether GMBN or EMBN. I've recently returned to the sport of mountain biking after a 15 year layoff . . . and EMTB's have got me back into it! I don't have one at the moment, but I had a chance to sample both a Merida and a Specilized Levo while I was in Tasmania on some beautiful classic trails @ Derby (in Tasmania) and oh boy . . . hasn't tech come a long way! I was super surprised that I was still getting a great workout on the EMTB's; and I felt like I could really enjoy the climbing components of the trail without being completely knackered by them. Thumbs up and keep up the great vids :)

On my enduro bike it feels more nimble, much easier to manual and bunny hop. The e-bike gets me more runs and is still a ton of fun. No way would I give up either bike :-)

Ride what you want. It’s damn near childish to get all huffy n puffy toward another rider based on what floats their boat. And those idiots who actually get emotionally distressed over someone riding an Ebike shows legitimate mental deficiency. I couldn’t imagine watching somebody doing something they love (like ride an Ebike) , and feel the need to knock them down a pin. There’s one thing we can judge each other on, not which bike, but how we treat one another while we’re out there.

Great stuff, I put my self build ebike up against my mate at the black runs on Llandegla at the weekend, he was on that exact same standard bike, I was on my 50lb hub drive, it's a tank built for ground clearance more than anything.
Wooped me downhill, more due to me constantly overcooking the power trying to reel him in and ending up missing the bends.
Uphill, just a joy to behold as I have just as much fun dealing with the terrain, meanwhile my mate arrived a good 15 mins later on the full climb, he was destroyed, mentally as well.
The hub drive gives a different ride, the pedal assist gives a smooth gearless push regardless of the chain gear and is good for climbing over difficult terrain, but the unspring weight is nasty.
Passing everyone on the climb just doesn't feel right though, and I can see it causing problems between the two camps.
Ebikes are going to need some concrete rules of behaviour.

I earn 5 downhills with my ebike. Do you use a push motor to mow your lawn? Manual garage door opener? Come lift with me some time. I use free weights at the gym. I am fit and accomplish more in the gym in one day then most pencil necked push bikers.

Having spent time on an ebike, You get just as much of a sense of accomplishment, you can climb steeper more technical sections than you ever could without the peddle assist. You don't have to go everywhere on full assist either. Just 10% is enough to keep you going when you would normally be finished. Running them on turbo all the time is a party piece for videos like this, you cant do that all day on them. Also I am equally exhausted at the end of the day they are not cheating at all. Use one correctly and you are battered at the end of the day only difference is you have done 3-4X the amount of actual bike riding

I will never own a non e bike ever again in my life i have never ever had as much fun and I have been riding for 27 years. I now call it e adventure riding because you can do soooo much riding cover huge distance do a run 5 times for every other riders one. I have heart rate data going back 20 years the average hr is exactly the same so fitness same but distance per hour covered about 30 to 35% more just more fun for me. If you don't like e bikes don't buy one but don't hate them they are the future. I promise if you use one for a week you will never give it back.

The question is would you rather a Road E bike and a normal downhill bike or a E MTB bike ?

    • @kingerz
      @kingerz Před 3 lety +1

You cannot do 5 runs to their one that is a ridiculous exaggeration and not even a good point if it were true since the trails will erode 5 times faster (more due to the heft). I do enjoy my Turbo Kenevo but it IS cheating and feels like it. The bike gives 4X power so it massively easier. That is literally the point. Best for older or injured riders, or those with no shuttle service doing DH.
I think lots of people never had a motorbike and get the slight thrill of that from an Ebike.
They are good fun, just people need to get real even if they are justifying a mega expense.

    • @turbolevo8703
      @turbolevo8703 Před 3 lety

@@kingerz You haven’t properly read what rational thinker said.
An Ebike can be used as YOU + EBIKE. If YOU have an FTP of 300watts and the bike (Levo) gives 560watts that gives a total of 860watts.
This is a much faster riding experience than one would normally get given an FTP of 300 watts.
I have the same heart rate data over 15 years of hard XC training and can confirm the data shows a similar effort but greater speed.
Of course one can be lazy if one chooses by using the highest power mode and soft-pedalling everywhere, but you are WRONG to assume
all Ebike riders use their bikes in the same way.
Some riders give just as full an effort on an Ebike as they do on a non Ebike and use the extra power to ride faster rather than easier.
Does this make sense to you?

In Lisbon, there’s an uphill bike race called “subida à glória”. For the first time, this year, e-bikes were allowed, but the best time is still on a regular bike: 35 vs 39 seconds. It’s a 270 meter climb, with 17% gradient average, on cobble stones and a lot of cable car tracks. A cyclists nightmare, but a lot of fun... to watch :)
This to say that I think a regular bike can often be faster than an ebike.

I have to say, it's not really the bike that's fast (as was mentioned in the video) it's definitely more to do with the rider. I ride on MTB club rides weekly, and there are a few riders on non-ebikes that I literally cannot keep up with (apart from steep climbs) on my Levo. A couple of them are even on single speed bikes. I'm quite an average rider, but perhaps a more advanced and fitter rider could keep up with them.

What a pitiful world we're becoming when people can't ride a bike any type, for whatever reason, without some douche being negative because their opinion differs from yours about how you should ride a bike. FFS. By the way Lads you got a fantastic channel here so keep these great vids coming. You got yourselves another subscriber.

Great fun video The battle of wise age with battery power and youth on moving on his quick skill to stay ahead of the E bike....my only thought I am torn between a Giant E Mt Bike 2019 model $5,300 USA 🇺🇸 💰and a Trance $8,000 2018 model reduced to same price point as the E which in my eyes 👀 is now a tough choice .My thought is once the battery dies and I still want to Ride I’ll just be carrying a extra 15lbs of stuff it seems I don’t need out in the woods 😎🤔🇺🇸🇺🇸. Cheers Keep up the great videos 😎👍

I'm wedded to my old fashioned hardtail which is always overloaded with shopping/camping gear but whenever I talk to e-bike riders they are usually saying their knees prevented them from cycling UNTIL they got the e-bike. (They're often fat or old).
The great thing about them is they make cycling accessible to those who otherwise would just drive everywhere or worse - get the fucking bus.

if you say e bikes are for lazy people, it's because your mind is locked up in a bike park, simply said. I have a traditional XC FS bike and I use to go out and ride with my friends on natural trails and we do also ride our way to them on the road, no puny cars to get there. We use to spend a whole Sunday from 8am to 5-6pm and we have much fun discovering new places, but the distance is a limitation on the given time. With e bikes we could do the same, but for a longer distance and have more fun the whole day without going off the bike! Seriously try one and set your mind to exploring new grounds.

Love seeing all the middle aged men who are trying to prove their worth by competing in any and all things, hate on people who own e bikes. Not everyone rides a bike for competition you know, there are people who just ride alone for fun or with their family. Just because someone on an e bike is faster than you doesn't mean you are not good anymore and need to attack another persons choice.

I was going to buy the Levo Turbo Comp eMTB but the €6299 price tag just stuck in my throat, I ended up buying the Focus Jam2 6.7 nine for €3799 (list price €4299). I was out on it every day in the hilly forests where I live and loved it but it started feeling just a bit too easy even in ECO mode, so I bought the Focus Jam 6.8 (normal MTB) with full XT group set and must admit I'm loving this more than the eMTB. Although the eMTB is so much fun to ride, it just feels like cheating (for me) but I would not begrudge anyone who uses one. I'll probably use the eMTB a lot more in the winter when cycling is less fun as this will even things out.

Late post here.... need some insight.
I’m about to pull the trigger on a ‘19 Kenevo. I currently ride a ‘17 Enduro as my daily driver.... the Enduro suits my riding style and local terrain very nicely.
Curious about the Kenevo vs a typical enduro bike on the descents. Looks like Neil is having a bit more airtime and lifting the front end whenever necessary. Steve looks more planted. Is that due to the bike? Or more due to rider style.
My climbs and descents in Pennsylvania are usually steep and technical. Medium sized hits and little senders everywhere. I’m trying to decide between the Kenevo and the new Levo as my first ebike. Penny for your thoughts?

E-Bikes are a great solution for aging riders who simply can't operate a standard MTB anymore. We all age and we'll all need assistance sometime in our life.... so... you either quit riding or use an e-bike and gain many more years of riding.

#EMBNQuestions I would like to see a real downhill test ie; both bikes,1 hill paved, same rider, coasting(motor off). As i understand it physics says that the ebike due to it's weight would be slower to accelerate but would reach a higher top end, but what about the motor/gear drag, how does that affect the results.
Second question; You have been dealing with mid-drive bikes so far. Can you put a front drive hub on one and make it 2-wheel drive? How does that affect handling/performance? We all know the battery will die sooner.
Lastly as this video proved Steve used less energy going up the hills and so was able to narrow the gap with a greater burst available since his legs were not as depleted.(?)

E-bikes will probably in a near future dominate the market for recreational cycling. They getting cheaper and better every year. For competition unassisted bikes will still be the norm. But there will probably be some e-bike competitions as well. Normal bicycles will be something seen in a museum, just as hand saws and double axes to fell trees.

    Hi,
I”d like to see some better budget options for ebike converters or less expensive ebikes reviewed. I live in the United States and would love an ebike but the price is too elite for my desire. I’m 49 years young, but I’m 5ft 8inches and weigh a whopping 200lbs. So I love mountain biking here in Connecticut, but it is very hill packed and endurance to ride for the day in woods is quite difficult. To me I’d love to have that confidence to know I could push myself longer because I”d have a little help if I needed it.... I could focus more on enjoying my ride, rather than the the fear of trying to over exerting myself trying to get through it all.
Sadly $1,500+ is not in my budget.
