    For our first six months or so, when we boondocked, we played the guessing game with our battery levels.
    Are we fully charged? What percentage are we at? How much time is left? Will our furnace be able to run all night?
    These are things you just don't have to think about in a house. But, the struggle is real in an RV!

    Consumer beware. This is why videos like this are so important. I as a rental agent will tell you the real deal. It’s up to you to decide what you want to do?
    I rent motorcycles. Even after I advise people of the coverages and their liability…..
    Too many don’t get the coverage then complain about their decision. Thanks for the info

    I was riding through the middle of Wyoming, pulled off to catch a photo of the scenery with the bike mirror in the photo. Hadn't seen a car for two hours and of course, I get the pickup in the mirror right when I'm taking the photo. To the guy's credit, he did ask if I was OK since there usually was not a whole of traffic through the area. Thanks for the info about the batteries - I'll be upgrading when I get my rig and I'll definitely get the battery monitor!

    Thank you for going thru all the differences in batteries between about the currents and amp hours. Last summer we had some batteries die several times while boondocking and that wasn't fun especially with no fan capability. Batteries are always a hot topic in the RV community and we have heard a lot of good things about the battle horns. Maybe when we upgrade our RV we will do that.

    Daisy the killer watch dog! lol... For the wet type batteries, I think that the best way to explain to someone why they are still rated as they are is that they can give that AmpHour, but go beyond 50% and you're doing damage to the battery. So they'll do it, but only once. Great video. As always, well presented and explained. Thanks for helping us out so much. Much appreciated.

  • @howard6798
    @howard6798 Před 4 lety +2

    I suggest a follow-up video ( "Part II") is required, Chad. At least in GD trailers, the stock WFCO converter is not the best for a lithium like Battle Born. Then the wiring from the converter to the battery must be considered. OEM's put the smallest gauge wire (weight and cost consideration) that may not be able to handle what a lithium-capable converter is capable of supplying to a lithium battery bank. There's a lot of "gotchas!" with this topic! Separate note--wish I'd had my solar and DC-DC Charger setup installed at the National Rally last year so I could have showed you (we were about five trailers down--I had the Goldwing). I'm sure you and I would have enjoyed geeking out talking about our configs. That is if Daisy allowed it. :)

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  Před 4 lety +1

      There are a lot of gotchas with the topics of batteries for sure.. Which is why we wanted to keep this video focused on monitoring. We will likely have some follow-up in the future to talk about batteries and charging, etc. For us, our stock converter is disconnected and we charge with our IC-3000 GoPower. We do also want to add solar at some point... and/or maybe take advantage of the second heavy duty alternator in our truck to charge while driving... 👍🏼

    You do amazing videos- thanks! I had read/heard that the battery bank should be fused close to the bank with an ANL or Class T (many prefer Class T). I see that your Class T fuse is after the battery switch and + busbar. I am very interested in your opinion on how one selects the order of those 3 things as I would have thought the order would be battery bank then 400 amp fuse, the switch, then busbar. Thanks!

    Love the informative videos.
    Just my $.02 here... I see a lot of people saying they want lithium now. As a word of caution, I would not cheap out on the lithium batteries without a BMS. The BMS on lithium batteries is absolutely essential, in my opinion. Improper battery management on a lithium battery for charging and discharging rates is a sure fire way (pun intended) to have a battery catch fire and/or explode. Do you remember all of those hoverboards and cell phones a few years ago that were burning up? Improper battery management was the culprit. Usually the fires/explosions are due to overheating and then thermal runaway, which results from charging or discharging too quickly. This will cause the battery to get hot. Without some type of BMS, there is no way to catch the overheating in time.

    You are cool, it's a pity that Russia does not develop the direction of large campsites. Looking at you I thought about the development of tourism infrastructure in my huge homeland, we have something to see and show tell us and show more how the communication system of campsites for vacationing tourists on trellers is arranged! Thank You!!!👋🏻

    Nice video, Chad. Curious what gauge wire you ran from batteries to the bus bars? Also, for the shunt....is the negative running direct to the shunt, then to bus bar? At what point are you connected to the chassis? (bus bar to chassis or negative terminal to chassis)? Thanks again!

    Great video. One clarification. Your Battleborn (BB) batteries are controlled by its internal bms that only allows 100ah out of the fully charged battery before cutting current. My understanding is that if you removed the bms and drew all the power from the batteries, it would ruin them. Kudos to battleborn for labeling their batteries for usable capacity unlike most other manufacturers. Keep making these wonderfully informative videos.
    Can you make a video on trash while boondocking? Especially for longer periods and in areas with preditors (bears)? Who doesn't like some goodhearted trash talk!

      As I understand it, the *true* rating under the covers is more like 110Ah. the BMS, like you said, limits it to 100Ah....
      On the trash question..Most places we've been have a dumpster in driving / walking distance. If no threat from critters, we can stage in the back of the truck...

    thanks! great information. we are selling our house now, and have on order a Fuzion toyhauler to live in for at least a couple years.
    The Fuzion is coming with a Onan 5500 watt gen, a 265 watt solar panel, a MPPT charge controller, and a magnum 2000 inverter. As you are aware the trailer ships to the dealer sans batteries. I cant decide if in 2 years, heck give it 3 the added cost of lithium batteries would outweigh the cost of fuel for the generator ( and or propane usage to operate the fridge ) i have been told the solar (assuming most everything else is off) will keep up with the fridge. its still a bit of a puzzle.
    Will most likely bite the bullet and get the Lithium after watching this.
    Maybe we can go for a ride somewhere sometime.
