  • Petsmart just released their own line of Small Animal Cages and BOY ARE THEY JUST AWFUL and a setback in the appropriate care for our beloved pets! Watch as i put together their cage as i explain what a hamster needs and its proper enrichment. Get a good laugh out of me struggling to put together this cage, cause it was quite painful to do and hear the final verdict at the end of what i think about this Race Car design. As you can tell by the title, this isn't a cage people should use!

      Aka sai in fourth grade my class did an experiment with 2 rats to see how water and milk effect the rats in the cage. We didn’t have them as class pets and the two went to two different homes, now me being in fourth grade I didn’t do my research and my mom didn’t really either... and I didn’t have any electronics so that made things harder. She lived a solid 3 years in a small ish cage but she spent most of her time out of the cage with me....now that I have a phone and can do my research, (now a freshman in high school) I now have 5 rats in a double critter nation.

    Hello, long time mouse owner here! This cage makes me cringe, it's absolutely not okay for mice too. A happy mouse group starts at 4 animals and up, never keep a mouse alone UNLESS it's a male in which case it needs to be neutered and then reunited with the group, everything else is animal cruelty because they are very social. The absolute minimum cage size for a group of four is 100x50x50 centimeter. They will chew through plastic and hurt themselves, also they need larger wheels for the same reasons your hamsters do: so they don't curve the spine.
    Why are they even producing cages like this, no hamster, gerbil or mouse should be kept in one :(

    • @BedardJ
      @BedardJ Před 5 lety +17

      I disagree with neutering male mice. I have thought about it before, but they have such short life spans that it seems almost pointless because by the time their old enough, they've already reached adult hood. And here in the states there are hardly any vets that can do it, making it a very risky surgery. I find male mice are okay alone as long as they have plenty enrichment.
      About the wheel thing. I use flying saucers because I do not want his tail to curve. The tail being an extension of their spine which is essentially saying almost every wheel is not appropriate unless they can be running entirely straight.
      We do agree that these are horrendous cages!

      Male mice don’t need to be neutered. It is more recommended that Male mice are housed alone.

    • @maymagma
      @maymagma Před 5 lety +4

      not as much about the cage but about the statement "a happy mouse group starts at 4 animals and up". from personal experience i can only keep 2-3 mice at a time before they fight? i double the typical things like food dishes, water bottles and wheels. they also have a fairly large cage ( a 25 liter bin, a 46 liter bin and a critter trail attached by tubing, as well as other little containers and areas) from my research we were under the impression that groups should be of 4 or more so we got 4 mice. they came from the same pet store at the same time and still ended up fighting. unfortunately one passed away after around 2 months and they continued to fight but nothing too bad (no visible injuries). we ended up having the other 3 for a year and a few months before another one passed away (nothing to do with the fighting) we kept the other 2 until they passed away (we belive it was age). and then got all new mice, once again getting 4 mice. they fought quite a bit and one ended up dying after about 3-4 months( july 2018) and since then have had no problems with fighting. this is an extremely long comment but from experience do you know anything about this? we tried separating them a few times but when ever placed alone they would show signs of "loneliness".
      **forgot to mention, they are all female and came from a pet store that only sells female animals

    • @junes23
      @junes23 Před 5 lety +4

      @basic bedard
      I'm sorry but i have to absolutely vehimently disagree. Mice are not able to be happy alone and should never be kept alone. This might sound harsh but i think it's less cruel to just feed the male mice to snakes (as many people do) than keeping them alone. I don't know about the vet situation in the states, in my country it's also not the easiest job to get a good vet but that's certainly not the mice's fault! Please do not keep male mice alone and give them the chance to be part of a group by neutering them. Yes, a surgery IS a big a risk. But it's absolutely a risk worth taking for a happy mouse. Usually one or two castrated males in a group of all females can really balance things out and help with the group dynamic.
      I can't change your mind of course but i very strongly stand for never keeping a mouse alone. In my reply to Holly i described just one example of how much my male mouse changed when he had to be kept alone, it's really heartbreaking.

      That's why parents should first do the research on what an animals care should be. Then also have the child do the research. My son wants a Syrian Male and every time he asks I look at him and remind him he cant have one until he can give me the highlight points of owning a hamster. Parents shouldn't impulse buy pets for their kids. Make their kids know what they are getting into.

    As a child, I did have a hamster and I always thought it had a pretty good life with me. But after I saw the first bad cage review you mentioned stress biting the cage and I remembered my hamster always did the same. That was the first video of yours I saw and the more videos I saw the more I realized what a horrible pet owner I was.
    He was a really tame hamster and I loved him. but at some point, I got really annoyed at the hamster wheel and took it out. I did put it back in the cage in the morning as I somehow didn't realize hamsters are nocturnal. In hindsight, I now know how horrible that was for him and why he suddenly became more aggressive towards me. He was just incredibly stressed and stuck in a too small a cage while a little kid wants to pet him during the day. (I also remember giving him soft fibers for in his hidey hole)
    I feel horrible about it and wished I knew about this or had the sense to look it up back then. If I could, I would immediately get another hamster and give it the life my other one deserved but never got.
    If any parent out there has a kid that cares even a little bit about their hamster, then PLEASE, let them get a bigger cage then this and make them look up some hamster care information. Don't let a hamster suffer unnecessarily and make your child regret in their later life how they took care of their pet.

      I had a Syrian as an 8 year old named Scribbles, and had her in a 10 gallon fish tank with a water bottle, hide, food, chew toys (If I’m not mistaken), wheel, and bedding. I never took my wheel out, and I was able to sleep with the wheel noise. I also took her out every so often and let her roam in a little wire fenced thing I had (don’t know what that’s called). The small tank was the main problem, but then she got sick after having her for about a year and a half. We thought she would recover, but then she died from it. I wish I had known that she was sick, that she wouldn’t recover, and that I could find a vet (that would’ve been nerve wracking, no lie though).

      @llamalady Před 5 lety +2

      I have a very similar experience, I had a dwarf hamster and we transformed an old bird cage into their habitat. I thought I was giving her a good life and she was very tame. I'd take her out every day and build mazes for her out of lego and cuddle in the couch. I genuinely thought she was happy and I loved the little animal.
      However now that I think back the cage didnt have nearly enough floor space, and she'd show so many signs of stress. Such as biting the barrs of her cage and endlessly running her wheel which was way to small :(
      It was over a decade ago, and I didn't have access to internet. My dad had had hamsters when he was a teen, and so he 'knew' how to take care of them. In hindsight his information was so outdated, and I was just a kid. Im really sorry for the poor hamster :(
      Now I own a mouse who is in a very big tank. Everyone who visits my home thinks he has a very outrageous and extra encosure cause its so big and stuffed full of enrichment. I'd honestly like to upgrade it into something even bigger 😂😂

    This is really bad. I definitely see kids wanting to drive the cage around like a car. I recently was in Petsmart and a woman was trying hard to get her rambunctious 7 or 8 year old son intrested in getting a hamster. He kept calling them rats and was only interested in these cages. Thankfully the boy wanted to leave and didnt want anything. I totally feel hamsters are not good pets for children unless they are old enough to understand they aren't toys. I recently got my 3rd hamster after my 2nd one died of old age and he is very shy and has not been totally tamed. I am do glad he got a home with me because I have the patience and understanding of his needs. If he had gone home with a family with children I fear what would have happened to him. So glad he isn't in a cage like this. Great job on these informative videos!

    I work inside of petsmarts sometimes, as a blue buffalo food rep, and one of the stores I go to I have a very good relationship with the employees and management. When one of the old employees was visiting last week, she looked at the cages and went 'omg' then one of the managers came up and was talking about how cute they are and how much she liked them. Me and the ex employee looked at her, and politely explained why they are bad cages. That they are too small, and very difficult to actually clean. Not to mention that male syrians will likely get too big for the tubes. She thought about it for a moment, and shrugged it off but I haven't heard her rave about them to customers since when I am there. It's difficult because honestly only one of the cages in the store is properly sized for hamsters. THANKFULLY one of the managers, who is such a sweet woman, actually has a hamster she keeps, who was a baby one that came in with a spine deformity. Due to this, she adores hamsters and whenever she coaches new owners, I see her take them to one good cage for them.
    Sadly another petsmart I go to, I don't have this relationship with the staff. Due to this, it's harder for me to talk to them about these issues without risking them getting defensive and not wanting me in the stores at all. The store I have been in for...the past 3 years always love my advice, since I know a lot about many species(mostly bettas and ferrets, they always like to pull me over when someone has questions about those!) and I have helped many of the petcare people learn more about what is, or isn't, appropriate for their betta fish. Most of their 'betta tanks' are never, ever promoted by a single employee. If people buy them, it's because they just grabbed the first thing they saw and never actually asked anyone.
    I really want these discustingly small cages, and tanks to be completely gotten rid of. But money talks, and many people honestly DON'T care if their pet is happy. THey think the bare minimum is good enough. As someone who deals in pet food I see that with dogs and cats as well where people figure that cheaper is just as good because it's 'good enough' and their pet is 'fine' on the junk food. When I first swapped my dog from kirkland to Nutro I saw a MASSIVE difference in his enegery, and his coat. His poops weren't nearly as stinky, and he was silky soft. He is now 8 years old and people mistake him for 3 or 4 all the time.
    Thankfully there are many people who just don't know any better, and are glad to learn more. But...some just...don't care. It's not important to them if their pet lives their best life. They are just there for company or something to look at. And that's it.

      I feel you on the food. I rehomed a cat and her previous family fed her on nothing but Whiskas. She was underweight and suffering from diarrhea as a result until I switched to Iams which is actually good quality. God knows how long they forced her to eat Whiskas junk but you could just tell it was because it was cheap not because they cared about her wellbeing and it's like how would you like constant diarrhea because you have no option for better quality food.

Same with dogs, better than beneful, or pedigree, or dog chow/alpo/gravytrain ect.....if I get them to make even a slight change, I feel better. this reminds me... last week, i went to my local petsmart and i was observing the guinea pigs in their small glass tank. there was at least 5-6 of them there. i own a pair of female guinea pigs, so i know a lot about their diet at most and i aim to keep them the happiest and healthiest as possible. i pointed out to the lady who claimed to be the one taking care of the guinea pigs that they hardly had any hay and that they need a lot more than that, but she proceeded to give what seemed like an attitude and claimed that they ate all of it too fast.
      that's not justifiable for not refilling their hay or giving them an unlimited stock of it, though. they should have tons more than what they originally are fed.
      i get anxious providing advice or recommendations to employees now because of the attitude they seem to give towards others.

    It's definitely not suitable for mice either. Neither is a 20 gallon long imo.
    Mice aren't just very active, they're extremely agile. I think a lot of people, especially those who mainly have experience with hamsters, don't understand just how physically capable mice are, or how their minds navigate their environment. In short, they LOVE to climb and they need a decently sized cage which isn't just littered with toys and hides on the ground, but also in the air, with various ropes, sticks and ladders linking them. Basically, their cage should be set up very similarly to that of a rat's cage, just in miniature. They need that mental and physical stimulation and in my experience, they use every bit of space they're given.
    It can be hard to set up a mouse cage correctly with a tank, just because there aren't any bars on the sides to hang things on, but it's still possible. But just one glance at that cage is enough to tell me it would be cruel to keep a mouse in there permanently. Even a single mouse needs a lot more space than that. Mice are very sociable creatures, but males seldom get along, so they often have to be housed alone. To help compensate for the lack of company, they need more attention and more enrichment and therefore nearly as much space as a pair of females would need. There's a little bit of height to the cage, so it might be possible to add a few hanging toys, there aren't any bars on the top centre of the cage, which makes that awkward, but one or two could maybe be hung along it's length...if there's practically no bedding in the cage so it doesn't take away from the height of the cage. Obviously, not having much bedding is really impractical for any species of rodent.
    So...um...no. Just no. Please nobody put any living creature in there. There unfortunately aren't a lot of options for mice just because they're so small and can wiggle through the bars of a lot of the few decently sized cages out there. But a bin cage is great because it's possible to put mesh or bars on the sides to help with attaching toys, and they're normally quite tall as well, which means you can add a good amount of bedding and still have plenty of space to create a complex environment for them to navigate.

      @BedardJ Před 5 lety +4

      Amen Amen. I am trying to get this point across. It is NOT the size of the animal but the activity level of said animal. I wish I could post pictures here because my bin is about 840 sq2 for my male and has four levels. No hanging toys but plenty of climbing and jumping things for him. I don't really like putting non solid surfaces (edit: like hanging hammocks) with him because mice have poor eyesight, nevermind he is albino which hinders that even more. Although I have seem him catch himself from falling in the most REMARKABLE ways that his balance and coordination is incredibly impressive.

      @@BedardJ Sounds like your little guy has it made. :) You're right that mice don't have great eyesight, but I've found they don't really need it to get around. Their amazing sense of smell, touch and ability to learn, seems to compensates for it. I've had 3 albinos and they've all been fine with hanging toys, so your boy might be ok with them too, if you want to give it a try. But I don't think it matters if you don't. I hadn't actually thought of just adding a lot of levels, but you're absolutely right, levels are just as good for making use of the space and offer great climbing opportunities and safety is really important too. Especially if you have a really tall cage. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

I tested it out myself with my mouse and she is small for a mouse and the stress and uncomfortableness that cage brings isn't worth it. I returned it next day and had a word with the manager on the phone about removing these cages and he said that they have had several complaints so they will review the cages and possibly stop making them!

    Who tf would even buy these? They're so expensive for the quality and size.
    I still don't get it. Why spend like $50 - $80 on tiny cages like these when you can literally get a samla for like $20?? All you have to do is drill holes for the bottle and other accessories??
    It's 2018, we have the internet, do research, people.

    I'm so very grateful for CZcams, ErinsAnimals, your channel, and more for opening my eyes on what hamsters REALLY require. When I first wanted a hamster I had no idea that these cages were too small. (I'm the kind of person to do thorough research on things before I get it) so I went on CZcams searching what the appropriate diets are, and what cages are good. I found out that every single one of the hamster cages at my pet store were way too small. If not for CZcams and these channels, is would've known nothing about the cafe size minimum! Now I know exactly what the minimum is, exactly what veggies they can eat, and how to handle them. Thank you so much for your videos and many other channels too.

    i have always (until last year) had gerbils, mice or guinea pigs and as a kid i loved the look of these novelty cages and fish tanks but i always knew they were way to small for anything andit makes me angry to see people using them. same thing seeing fish in tiny tanks (i have had fish for most of my life). i always got large tanks and gerbilariums. my last gerbil even ended up in my guines pigs old enclosure so he was living gerbil luxury. i loves seeing him run around at full speed. the only small cage i had was my very first gerbil when i was really young and my mum had control of what he stayed in but even that was not that small and he spent most of his time climbing around anyway and hanging, he was more of a climber than a digger which was funny but strange to see (epecially when he would hang upside down from something). before people say he was stressed, no, he was extremely happy and lived longer than i have ever heard of a gerbil living, he just liked to climb. if you put him somewhere he could not climb THEN he would be sad.

    WTH! How can anyone with any understanding of gerbils think that you can put a gerbil in a plastic cage. Gerbils have to chew on things because their teeth grow constantly so putting them in a plastic cage with plastic tubes will mean that within a week your gerbil will probably be gone. As someone who has owned gerbils in the past seeing that claustrophobic cage is so upsetting because I can’t imagine ever putting one of my gerbils anywhere near one.

    Also, those cages may be recyclable, but you'd have to take them to a special facility if that's the case because, due to the size and shape of them, they can't be recycled in the standard recycling facility that takes your recycling weekly. Size, shape, and material matter when it comes to recycling. So unfortunately most of those cages will end up in landfill since most people don't care enough to find a place that can recycle it.

    No. Mice need a huge cage. Much bigger than a Syrian probably. You’ll find they use EVERY inch of the cage. They are way more athletic than hamsters and need extra levels and tons of space. (Arguably, more intelligent too.)
    Edit: long story short. It’s not the size of the animal but the activity of said animal. (Also mice aren’t much smaller than robos or dwarfs so it’s quite a leap to say they could use a smaller cage)

I’m a momma to a 4 year old little girl and not that she’s more independent I thought it was a good time for us to get a pet now that I have more time. We got a beautiful winter white hammy on Monday 04/06 and the PetSmart worker suggested the tiny tales castle cage 🤦🏻‍♀️ not knowing any better I bought it. I did a ton of research after setting it up because I realized how small it was and how hard it would be to clean. Today Friday 04/10 I’m happy to say Bubbles has been moved into a 40gallon breeder and hopefully in the future we can set up a bigger in closure. Thank you for all the information!

    No that is not a suitable cage for mice!!!!!!!!! Mice get bored easily and that cage is nothing entertaining for them. A bin cage that is 370 square inches is good for ONE MALE mouse or TWO FEMALE mice. Mice love climbing and they obviously can't climb in that cage. Mice also get bored easily and you will need to change the locations of their hides and toys IN EVERY DEEP CLEAN witch you can't do much of in that cage.

    That's why bin cages are great, after your pet dies or something you can use it for storage, and those diy glass and wood cages can be used as desks if you remove the glass
