  • They’ll be together in Electric Dreams
ELECTRIC DREAMS...When it comes to hidden gems, this movie is on the top of the list. Coming out in 1984, Electric Dreams came and went from movie theaters without much fanfare but it found an audience on home video and cable, where it went to live on in the hearts of those who managed to catch it.
Lenny Von Dohlen and Virginia Madsen play Miles and Madeline and Bud Court plays Edgar, Miles' talking computer with artificial intelligence. After a freak accident, the computer comes to life and soon Miles and Madeline both find themselves falling in love with Madeline, the cellist playing next door neighbor. But who will win her heart?
Electric Dreams is a real, unique treat of a film and it also has a fantastic soundtrack, with original music by Giorgio Moroder, featuring Culture Club (Love is Love, The Dream), phillip oakey (Together in Electric Dreams) and Jeff Lynne (Video!).

Honestly, the way I interpreted the fight between Moles and Edgar was that Edgar was jealous that Moles was spending all his time with Madeline and less time with Edgar. Edgar believes he's in love with Madeline, but he's also very in love with Moles. This is explicitly stated when he's doing his love calculations, ME + MOLES = LOVE. And he ends up giving Madeline over to Moles because he loves him.
Like, it was very bold and ahead of its time for a movie to feature a computer that is explicitly bisexual

Yes! I believe Edgar likes both of them. I think he did love Madeline too as they connected over the music. The equations at the end read to me like Edgar can’t really understand/rationalize only loving one of them, because if he and miles love Madeline… then don’t they all love each other?

I like that it really is a love triangle with Edgar liking Moles in the end a little too. And there’s a couple scenes where Edgar and Moles are “old married couple” or “man and mistress” vibes.

I was about 9 or 10 when I saw this movie on cable.... Probably on HBO. I only remembered three things from it... 1) the computer calling him Moles, 2) the computer playing classical music and 3) I remembered loving the song at the end of the film, but all I could recall was the melody of the line "together in electric dreams." I am just now rediscovering this film thanks to knowing where to look on the internet, and I'm a little surprised at how well it holds up today....and how good the soundtrack is.
The story was very forward thinking... Perhaps Edgar ended up in the cloud!

I love that your generation is discovering this film. They advertised it a lot when it came out. But it wasn't a wide releasee. After its theatrical release, it became hard to see. It was originally released the weekend before Purple Rain and forget it. Nobody saw Electric Dreams after Purple Rain came out. I was in college, 21 years old and loved ELO since the mid-70's. I got to see it, finally on video, eventually. I think the music rights slowed that down.

I grew up watching this movie often and recently revisited it a couple of years ago after a long hiatus. I *love* this movie!
It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of its time with respect to what computers would eventually be able to do - something that just blew my mind watching it in 2020 and remembering how things were in 1984. How did they know?!
I have always loved the soundtrack. Jeff Lynne's "Let it Run" is one of my all-time fav. songs. And I know that this movie what inspired me to want to learn the cello. The super-sad cello piece that plays when Madeline meets Edgar is again one my of all-time fav. pieces of music.

I want to add something hidden deeper in the movie. It's about Miles's Earthquake brick. Edgar figures out his brick! He does so in the dream sequence he has. This is Edgar's dream!
But this information never gets to Miles! Edgar does try to tell Miles that he has been working on it. But Miles ignores him really. You would think if a sentient super computer is trying to tell you about the creation you have been working on, that you would listen?
I liked the movie. But I can't stop thinking about the realization that Miles never got the brick done with Edgar's help.
