    Alright, this video is another experiment where I use the social theory stuff purely as an analytical tool and contextualise the comics as a form of literature review. This essay is also soft ending for the Comparing Spider-Men series, although it may come back with an analysis on different knock off live-action and animated versions of the character, or a second part to this video where I go through more of Goffman's identity concepts, but that's going to happen waaaaaay into the future. However, there are 7 Spider-Man videos planned for the closer future ranging from a second Mary Jane video, the PS4 game and a bunch of stuff about Miles Morales.

      It is very interesting. I’ve always said that the Sam Ramey (?) Peter was always childish and baby like and that’s why I didn’t like him. It makes sense now bc I’ve never seen life s that. It seems too fake for me, and it’s bc the Sam Peter doesn’t grow up. The Amazing Peter always seemed dark and gritty to me. It seemed to bring out the worst parts of life and didn’t feel like it had hope a lot of the time. All they showed was him being alone and that Spiderman couldn’t have anyone in his life. Then comes Tom Holland’s version, and I loved how they portrayed it. That’s only bc it’s how I view life. You learn how to grow, through the good and bad, but never alone. I’ve always been confused as to why people liked the other two over the Marvel rendition, but now I understand. They’re all different outlooks on life.

    "... Webb declaring that this Spider-Man is destined to be alone forever with no teams."
    Damn, if that isn't the most depressing statement that I've heard in a while about TASM.
    That's probably why I find his characterization to be more interesting and much more rich in comparison to his other adaptations. This version of Peter Parker gives into his impulses and his selfish desires, the ones that make him more raw and more human. It transcends that border line between a character and someone with whom we might know in real life, and I think that's the beauty of (with how I personally, at least) see Spider-Man - he's the most realistic fictional character there is by a milestone. This adaptation, while bittersweet, demonstrates that by the end: Peter doesn't give up, and he continues to fight another day, despite losing so much in the process.

      Right here with you! TASM imo is the most true to message interpretation of Spider-Man. Peter's arc is so spectacularly done, and like you said the loneliness that follows Peter. It's like a looming doom that will never leave him be. Theres a moment at the end of TASM1, where the fight is over; the last living attachment to his parents is dead. And the man who made him change his selfish loner nature, and the father of his girlfriend has been murdered. And there he stands, alone. The camera pans out to show a wider shot of the city. Showing him, just him. Alone. Leaving us, the veiwer, with a feeling of emptiess. It's so beautiful that I teared up the first time I saw it, and I still tear up when I see it today! It has to be one of my favorite shots in film history. And the whole part after with Mr. Stacy's funeral, and Gwen's confrontation with Peter is very emotional. That's once again that loneliness peeking back out, almost whispering to Peter, "you'll forever be alone, anyone and everyone who gets to close to you is doomed." But he gives into his primal instinct, and forgets about the so called "easy way out". He gets back together with Gwen. Then whole final swing sequence is by far my favorite in any Spider-Man movie. It perfectly gets the point across that no matter what, Spider-Man will always be there to save the city. Never shall he back down from the challenge of evils threating innocent citizens, even if he's lost his whole world; the noble hero who was sprouted from tragedy, it's very uplifting actually! That's only have the reason why I've come to love TASM as much as I do, but yea lol!

    I don't really know (well, i do know it's just how i wanted to start this comment) but i think that my favorities Spideys are the ones that i can see myself in them the most. Webb' version talks a lot about growing up in loneliness (besides de classmates and friends you have along the journey), and Watt's version brings up how we want to be like our idols and we have to be more than them. There's this line that John Mayer said once that "you create your own style while your trying to emulate your idols" (or something like that, i really don't remember it now), that really fits in Tom Holand's interpretation. The Spidey from the Spectacular animated series is really focused in how being a good person is extremaly hard, and sometimes you have to be responsible and sacrifice so much for the right thing (all the versions of spidey do that, but i think this version is special because of the monologues that Peter has in his head and how it let the conflicts caused by it, have weight and be sincere not just to the character, but to the audience as well). There's a long time that i don't watch the Raimi's version, because for me it's like your reading a book about greek mitology and the whole story functions as a legend, not that it isn't great/good, it's just don't fit any longer for me, after i grew older :/
    PS:. love your videos especially about this great character

  • @OneAndOnlyYesMan
    @OneAndOnlyYesMan Před 3 lety +10

    This was another great analysis. I do think it’s important to note that no character can truly be defined by their first appearance alone, but rather in what way the character has endured over time. I’d argue that looking at the Romita Sr era would give a better impression of what defines the character, because by this point the kinks had been ironed out and what we were left with is what the character still largely remains to this day. Additionally, the fact that Uncle Ben is only present for little of this comic is really only a byproduct of the fact that AF15 is only about 15 pages long, therefore the story has to be severely condensed. The character’s significance to Peter is something that was reiterated over time, especially because in AF15 his death was fresh in Peter’s mind, whereas when ASM first started, he’d had some time to come to terms with it.

    I'll always have a passion for Raimi and Webb, but Watts' interpretation is an interesting one that I'm still invested, MCU Spidey may have had some issues for me in films like Endgame and FFH but I think he had a good portrayal from Civil War to Infinity War. Personally I feel like he became his own man in the third act of Homecoming and the entirety of IW, of course FFH kinda took a huge step back imo. I just don't think of the Raimi Trilogy higher than others, claiming as the reason I exist or why it created the universe or it's objectively better than most Spider-Man interpretations.
    I like it as much as Webb and Watts, I have my issues with all three and they have pros and cons. Raimi Trilogy isn't perfect, Webb Duology isn't perfect and Watts' (soon-to-be) Home Trilogy isn't perfect. They have their strengths and flaws.

      I dont think FFH took a step back beacuse in HC he accepts the fact that he isnt ready to be an avenger and that all the bells and whistles on the suit he doesnt need (after thinking he does) and are over the top to the point he doesnt put them in the FFH suit (as far as we know) and realizes that he was just as much Spider man as he was before he got the Stark suit to what he did have it. But even tho hes realized those things he still has that saftey net of Stark being there if anything goes really bad.
      in FFH, Stark is gone and there is no other heros there he can easily get hold of if he needs desperate help like he could with Stark. On top of that, the media keeps asking him if he is goi g to be the next Iron Man (metephorically) and protect the Earth. This then puts stress on Peter becasue he doesnt think he is ready for that level of responsibility hence why he turned down the Stark at the end of HC. He also has built up this imaginary image that Stark was the perfect hero and it isnt untill the talk with Happy that he realizes Stark was far from perfect which is when Peter finally stops comparing him self to Stark and decides that he just needs to do what he can as Spider man to the best of his ability rather than trying to be someone else or live up to someone else.

  • @logannottheonefrommarvel9917

    Each iteration takes a series of traits from the original comic book version and do what they can to build their identity around that handful of traits.
    Tobey: Struggling to find balance as Spider-Man, can't keep a job, failing out of school, can't maintain a relationship and ponders whether or not if it's truly is his destiny to be the wallcrawler. Has dreams and ambitions, but keeps running into a dead end.
    Andrew: Mostly lonely throughout his life besides his family and old friend, often keeps to himself at school, but has this quiet desire to find answers to questions he's had through most of his life. Has a scientific side to him because he wants to be like his Dad that left him at a young age.
    Tom: Naïve, a novice, very new to the whole superhero thing, but very eager. But what's odd is that he seemingly doesn't have an origin to him. From what I can tell his traits are from a completely different Spider-Man, Miles. He wants to be a worthy successor, but a successor to Iron Man, not a pre-existing Spider-Man, which feels convoluted and out of place.

    I kinda wish we got an interpretation of the origin which is more in line with Peter being a pseudo-incel jerk who is bitter about how others treat him while also being egocentric and the loss of Uncle Ben puts him in a journey to become less of a jerk. Many adaptations treat him as this sweet person from the start (sometimes kinda selfish) but I'd love a Peter who's so bad, the loss he experiences is not just tragedy, but also comeuppance.

    Great video, although I have to disagree about the part where Sam's Spider-Man lacked any creative personality (although, at least in the first movie, it did downplay his scientific skills). Let's not forget that his original motive that made him create the Spider-Man persona was money (just like the comic books), but the movie doesn't fully recognise him as Spider-Man until after he encounters his uncle's killer. There was this scene where he was drawing his super suit and coming up with a name (the Human Spider 😂) although not nearly as much of a creative demonstration as The Amazing Spider-Man, but it is still there. Saying that he doesn't have ambition is untrue (as Spider-Man he may not have that much of an ambition) because he wanted to be a great scientist like Otto Octavius. And also yeah he does want to give up in the second one, but so did the other two (even comic book Spider-Man) in FFH he wants to stop being Spider-Man to relax in his high school trip (he wanted to get rid so much his responsibilities that he gave EDITH to mysterio) and in TASM 2 he gave up for awhile after Gwen's death. They all have in common the weight of being Spider-Man especially in everyone's second movie. The reason why Sam's Spider-Man lost his powers is, because deep down he didn't want to be Spider-Man, due to the fact that it was ruining his personal life, just like it took Gwen in TASM 2, just like it makes Peter to not be liked by his fellow classmates in school in the MCU (although the writers could have done something better than that). In my opinion they all follow similar patterns in their own way.

    While different from Amazing Fantasy #15, I'd say Raimi's Peter is actually faithful to later comics or less early ones. A perfect example is The Amazing Spider-Man #50 which it adapts very closely. Peter deep down does have the desire to retire and give up being Spider-Man, because it keeps messing with his life. But he goes on anyway, because with great power, there must also come great responsibility.

    • @kevintotimeh6648
      @kevintotimeh6648 Před 3 lety

      @Greg Elchert Hi there . I also would like to make an argument which is: UNCLE BEN IS STILL THE REASON PETER PARKER IS SPIDER-MAN IN THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE! I understand other people who have an emotional attachment to that character like HiTopFilms, but for me he's someone to get the ball rolling most and foremost. I feel like the people who pay attention these details in the movies should know that Ben's presence is still present enough to know that he's the reason Peter puts on the costume in this universe. In Captain America Civil War SPIDER-MAN ALREADY EXISTS , it is established that Peter Parker has been Spider-Man for six months( taking down crooks and saving people from car crashes, etc,) before Tony Stark knocked on his doorstep. When Tony Stark asks Peter his motivations, he states,'' when you can do the things that I can but you don't then the bad things happen, they happen because of you''. This tells the audience what philosophy and moral compass the MCU Peter Parker stands for. Throughout the airport battle, Peter is very inexperienced compared to Cap and his team( he gets thrown out the window, even though he pinned Falcon and Bucky down, and he lost badly to Captain America who has lots of combat experience than Spidey) since this was his battle with superpowered opponents. Now let's go to Spider-Man Homecoming. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, which takes place two months after Civil War, is a coming of age story about a young man finding his place in the world as this Peter Parker is early into his superhero career( which explains how he's still coping his super strength and spider sense and apologizes to criminals for hitting them too hard, he hasn't swung on skyscrapers only on small buildings which explains why he is afraid of heights during the Washington Monument rescue) the story begins with Peter Parker returning to his normal life and superhero routine, but his so excited because he participated in the most biggest battles of all time with his idols and feel he's a superstar since Tony gave him a taste of the big leagues. MCU Peter still has those personality traits Peter Parker is supposed to have: he's not popular in school, very intelligent individual as shown when he gets a mathematical problem on the board right that Flash got wrong, and believably awkward. Even as Spider-Man he jokes when the situation is calls for it( making his jokes natural and appropriate) and even uses his pop-culture references to distract the enemies in Civil War and Infinity War, he knows when to get serious and stay focused( unlike Andrew GARFIELD AND SRAH MICHELLE GELLAR ( yeah I um don't like romances and horror together and I found her jokes forced and really mean! When he sees the alien weaponry( which he saw during his fight with some robbers he fought in the ATM bank earlier) and even though people are telling him to stop going after Vulture, he still follows his philosophy and moral compass. While yes his personal desire is to be an Avenger, he constantly states how dangerous the alien weaponry is dangerous multiple times throughout the movie('' the guy with the wings is the source of the weapons I gotta take him down'', these guys are selling weapons that are crazy dangerous, they can't be out on the streets, those weapons were out there and try to tell you about it but you wouldn't listen'', I know that selling weapons to criminals is wrong''). This is also further proved in the final act, where HE HAS GIVEN UP IMPRESSING TONY STARK and still goes after Vulture, even though people tell him not to, because it's the right thing to. At the end of the movie, Peter makes the choice of not joining the Avengers and continues to help the little guy, which is in character for a Peter who knows with great power, comes great responsibility. Also, Peter does receive consequences for his action such as due to him investigating a weaponry he gets humiliates for not showing up at Liz's party, he gets detention for skipping the school event, he gets more detention for skipping school and so many classes, worries his aunt, and loses Liz and she's moving due to her father being a criminal and HE KNEW THAT! MCU Spider-Man acts on his responsibilities as a superhero without anyone telling him so, and he does it for the greater good! In Avengers Infinity War( takes place 1 year and a half after Homecoming, Peter Parker at this point is a little more experienced with his life as Spider-Man as he is better at web swinging and he goes to space not to impress Mr. Stark, but to honor Queens since Thanos is hurting people, in which he says('' you can't be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man if there is no neighborhood''). Peter is fighting against Thanos because if he does something he should, if he doesn't the bad things happen, they happen because of him, the philosophy he stands for as a superhero. Peter also priorities in saving the Guardians on Titan during their battle with Thanos, something in character for Peter Parker. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a different world, still continues the coming of age journey for Peter Parker, as he now has to deal with the forcefulness and high expectations people have for him to follow Tony's footsteps, however Peter wants a break after everything that has happened in Infinity War and Endgame and WAS NOT GOING TO THROW THE TOWELS. Even though he wants a break for expectations and relax, during the Hydro-Man illusion Mysterio created, he saves a orphanage from a bell tower, which show where his priorities lie, and even when Talos disguised as Nick Fury, forces him to help out in world-threating mission, his main priority is keeping his classmates safe. When he has all these expectations thus upon him, he seeks Beck as the worthy successor to Tony Stark, little did he know that when he could do something( have EDITH) but he doesn't ( give Beck the EDITH glasses), the bad things happen because of him ( Quentin wrecking havoc upon London). After all the mistakes he made due to insecurities about himself, Peter reaches to Happy on the jet, and after his very emotional conversation with Happy, PETER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT TONY MADE MISTAKES, BUT WAS HIS OWN HERO, HIS OWN MORALS, HIS OWN MAN! Realizing this, Peter creates a costume that fits HIS OWN NEEDS since he has knowledge of Mysterio's illusion technology. Even with Peter getting the girl and saving the day, the Parker luck still plays as due to his naivety, Mysterio has announced his identity to the world and has been accused of murder due to the attack on London. THESE ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF HIS ACTIONS! Tom Holland has been a personal favorite Spider-Man, since I was struggling to come into my own throughout my life and had to deal with forcefulness and expectations from my loved ones to change last year ( the worst day of my life), however realized that I have to make my choices and have to be my own person!

    In terms of character arcs I really love the Raimi series, exploring themes of sacrifice, unwanted responsibility and pride. Spider-Man 3 as awful as it is, the bits where Spider-Man becomes full of himself and ruins his relationship with MJ in the process is dark and he enters borderline cruel territory and I don't think future Spider-Man films will ever have the guts to explore Spidey that way again. I'll give TASM some credit for exploring Peter's selfishness that gets Gwen killed, but Spider-Man now is just a goodie two shoe poster child.
