- In this video essay we will explore the grey area between Good and Evil. I will dive deep into the dark philosophy behind American Psycho, Breaking Bad, The Joker, Avatar and take you on a tour through the minds of so called "literally me" characters like Walter White, The Joker, Bruce Wayne, Zuko, Donnie Darko and many many more. Why is it that these characters so popular nowadays? Is there maybe something inside of us that is craving to embody the dark side?
Swiss philosopher Carl Jung made the distinction between The Persona and The Shadow Self.
The persona being our outward face we present to the world. And the shadow, our darker side, often left untouched…

There is a fine line between the anti-hero and the villain protagonist, in this video we will walk that line and show the dangers of crossing it.
He should’ve liked mine instead!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 I hate u youtuber!!,
Great job, bro!!
Black & White vs Shades of Grey . . .
Amazing job on this video and explaining everything man
Are you going to continue to use clips from movies you don't credit or mention anywhere in the video? It's very inconsiderate to those who want to know which movies the clips are from. I've seen multiple videos from you and you've done it in multiple. I like your wok, but if you keep doing this, I'll avoid your videos from now on.
This video was incredibly written and presented. My only gripe is that your back ground music often overpowered your voice to the point of being distracting. Every other aspect of your video was perfection.
Yea I agree, little too loud, u gotta a good voice tho
@@sean721888 GREAT voice
But I loved it i can fall asleep within 5 minutes of this video
Sometimes when people say "anti-hero" what they mean is "anti-villain."
Most of the time.
Fr, Patrick Bateman is no “anti-hero” he’s a fucking pure evil villain that’s also a protagonist, I’m not downplaying the whole setting that created him, not the message of the movie, but he’s not an anti-hero, he’s a villain.
@@jasoniusthegreat5584 exactly. what kind of a dumbass seeing him as some "misunderstood anti hero"?? He is a full on villain. or villainous protagonists who cant be justified in any way
The entire video he just lists likeable villains. Not a single antihero on the list. Batman is just a paragon hero, joker, patrick and walter are villains.
@@trafalgarlaw8373 zuko would be the closest but I still wouldn't call him a anti hero. He simply goes from villian to hero in an exemplary redemption arc
I would say that walter white, when he died, is a villian.. In the earlier seasons he was an anti-hero...
Patrick Bateman just seems insane
I think the last moments of his life were that of an anti-hero, but for most of the last year and a half of his life was that of a villain protagonist.
He spared the man that ruined his life, rescued him, and killed the people who were torturing him.
@@SmashingPichu Jesse didnt ruin walters life it was the other way around
@@Walrus5 yes jesse did ruined walter's life. jesse f**ked everything that walter wanted him to avoid. walter did even warned jesse from taking drugs, instead jesse is so f**king retarded and follow his whore girlfriend instead.
@@Walrus5 Walter ruined Jesse's life by saving Jesse's life literally hundreds of times?
@@noone-hd1ck the only reason Jesse's life was at stake all those times was because of walter anyway
It's the human desire to not feel like we are COMPLETELY bad for having a "dark side". It's called a "side" for a reason.
hard emoj
Walter was originally an anti-hero because the intent behind his actions was to provide for his family (good man doing evil acts). He became a villain when he allowed his pride to consume him and that became his purpose.
Mike lived and died an anti-hero. Mike understood the consequences of his evil and his inevitable demise but everything he did, he did for his daughter.
Purpose, not action, is what separates a hero and a villain. You can have villains do great deeds and heros commit atrocities but it is the WHY that defines them.
Mike did what he did for his daughter in law and his granddaughter*
which is why I wonder why he said "people between good and evil" and included PATRICK BATEMAN the guy who just murders people, mostly women because he likes to
Actually providing for his family was just the excuse as at the end we get his confession to his wife that everything he did, he did for himself.
@@LukeDunn6667 initial reason was providing for his family, but then it was all about crime and pride
mike did not die an anti-hero, like it or not by the time of brba he was a drug lord’s cold-blooded hitman who would’ve killed just about anyone for the right price. the “he did it for his family” wasn’t much less of an excuse that it was for walt at that point
My experience growing up in America is all about falling in line. Get the degree. Get the wife and two kids. Get the overpriced suburb home. Retire at 65. Die at 80.
I knew even as a kid I didnt want that life. So that decision to be different led to many relatives and people close to me treat me like an outcast.
Being a 30 year old singer-songwriter with life goals of living off the land as much as possible, Im pretty out there especially for my age group. I can relate so much to these "literally me" characters bc they embody what's missing in that "perfect American life"... FREEDOM!!!
I praise these shows/movies because of how they make the Anti-hero feel real. Their motives are realistic, and their story is somthing that can happen to any one of us
Very well said!
This was absolutely beautfully made. I'm speechless with how well done everything was put. From the visuals to the script. I love psychology and I know the very basics of it, but watching this video helped me understand more about it, and it's just... wow... I'm glad this randomly showed up when I was going through one of my CZcams rabbit holes lol

Their morality, or lack there of, makes readers and viewers gravitate towards them. It is in our human nature to empathize with people, and what makes anti-heroes so easy to understand is because they are relatable, and typically very round, dynamic characters.
"Evil is powerless, as long as the good are unafraid."
Wow.
The duality stuff reminds me of Jekel and Hyde, and how they're actually the same person, but he lets go of his inhibitions as his "shadow-self." Great video!

-Joker
🤣
Phenomenal video essay but to be clear to everyone. The Joker and Patrick Bateman are 100% not anti hero's. They may be protagonists but they are Villains through and through
Explain
@@fishygoswishy7777 they are literal murderers. 4chan users may make a case for joker but there is no possible way for you to justify the stuff bateman does
@@fishygoswishy7777 and they dont just kill violent criminals like walter and punisher, joker kills a tv show host because he was a little mean and bateman kills a homeless dude for no reason
Every villain is the hero of their own history, and the audience perceives them that way as well
This is why I'm very much in love with anti-heroes. My favorite anti-hero is The Punisher. So much so that I've even wrote a novella that stars a character who is very much like The Punisher but is also different in many ways.
The character in question is named "Matt Santos." He's 24 years old and by the start of the story, he just left the Calivadan Army as a Ranger after 6 years of on and off deployments. Meaning he has seen his fair share of grisly action. But by this time after leaving the army, he just wants to rebuild his life with his family by catching up with his mom and stepfather. However he soon finds that his parents are not as happy as they were together from the last time he last saw them. And this becomes more complicated when the FBI shows up to his doorstep to interview his parents when he finds out that his mother believes she's being targeted by hitmen and in a scuffle of escaping, his stepfather tried to abandon her. All of this soon comes to a head when his mother is soon assassinated right outside of the courthouse and as a result, this left him traumatized and heartbroken. But what makes this even worse is a sympathetic FBI agent tries to help him with his case but her superiors shoot down the idea almost immediately. Which pretty much turns Matt Santos into a grieving mess when the agent tells him that there was nothing she could do even though she tried to push this case forward personally on his behalf.
But what really pushes Matt over to the dark side was by overhearing a suspicious man spell out his mother's name and labeling her as a target. He figures out a way to lure the man into helping him, knocks him out cold, and takes him into his car to ask some questions. By the end of this questioning however, Matt shoots the suspect dead which effectively shows that Matt has fully embraced his darker side. However he does not let this go rampant. He knows who he has to shoot. However Matt soon comes into a whole new shocking revelation that somebody close to him (in his family) set up the entire murder. And after some convincing, the FBI agent Maria Garcia decides to help Matt in his revenge quest after finding out that her own employers were in on the action the entire time. And by that, they were paid off to literally not do anything.
By the end of the story however, traitorous family member pays with their life by Matt Santos shooting him but realizing the consequence of his actions, Matt now knows he either has to turn himself in or go into hiding by staying outside of his country's borders. His choice was made clear to him after his FBI agent lady friend tells him that she won't take him in due to her disgust with the FBI's corruption. Matt and Maria get to know each other a little better (no dirty stuff though) but Matt's actions still catches up to him in some way: His face (not literal face; just him in full tactical gear) is now on the local newspapers. Which dubbed him as "The Road Ranger" in Spanish. Which by the way is the literal title of the novella.
All of this aside, you really presented the idea of an anti-hero really well. And I totally agree with your assessment when you say as we grow older in life, we eventually realize that being wholly good has little to no intrinsic value. This does not mean however that we should become totally evil. Because life has shades of gray all over it.
Insanity
I love anti-heroes as well. Not just because of their brutal nature, but also how they are like us. We all have good aspects inside us and will do good things, but we also do bad things because we either desire to do them or do them for the sole reason of benefitting us and others. They represent real life humans.
I think it's crazy how popular this movie still is I went to a concert last night and I saw at least two to three people wearing shirts of American psycho. Have you watched Mr robot? I feel like that would be an excellent topic for this type of work great video by the way
A good anti hero is Morbius. He morbs people
holy shit, that was absolutely great video, honestly!
I genuinely loved how u managed to integrate Zuko and the way Avatar is portraying the concept of Ying & YXNG and the journey of overcoming yourself in order to become a better (hopefully) desired version of yourself, that was really well done and I didn't expect it to be so good tbh haha 😁
also, you managed to incoperate the different characters who are obv. well known and already being taken as an example quite lot really refreshing and in your own style, so that it didn't seem repetitive or come off as such despite me already having watched like, fvck, dude, like a thousand videos or sum of that stuff talm 'bout the inner shadow and characters such as Walter White, Patrick Bateman u name it and what is the underlying tone and very essence of their character, design and what they essentially mean to represent and why.
really good work, highly appreciate!
Keep it up, man! ⚡

Its just because the actors playing them are conventionally attractive and handsome. This is why so many men want to be like them and relate to them.
Its a halo effect. I never seen someone ugly to be seen as a "literally me" character

So I hate to be that guy, but there's a video called "Sympathy for the Villain" by a channel named "EmpLemon" that's eerily similar to this video, from the title to the thumbnail to some editing choices. It's a fairly popular video, so I think some more effort could have been made to differentiate this one from it
EDIT: First off- this video is excellent. Very well crafted. Not many ppl can discuss this in such a way you have done. Thank you for your craft🙏🏻🔑.
Within the spiritual realm of Wicca, pagan, astrology etc (meaning outside of western Christian beliefs), we discuss a lot about this. It can be referenced as “the dark night of the soul” or similar phrases and processes. Meeting your “shadow self” and accepting it for what it is, is not a thing within western ideology.
It is only when you meet this shadow self, accept it and understand it, are you able to harness both within your identity in everyday life; utilizing this knowledge in all of your decisions and life, whilst understanding that one or the other takes a little more precedence in different situations.
When you compare the way the universe works- with both light and dark energies, humans have the ability to do the same.
What I think these types of films are capturing, is a millennia of the human race being told “only good is acceptable” and battling with “one or the other”, when really, you CAN balance both. You don’t have to be “all good” or “all bad”.
And please don’t take this out of context, people. I’m not suggesting whatsoever, it is ok to hurt ppl. Also, mental health is a BIG issue within capitalistic society which is another beast in itself.
Hope what I said makes sense❤
Great video! I’d love a video on either The Lighthouse or Trainspotting.
I have my thoughts on Patrick Bateman.
I think Patrick Bateman didn’t face the shadow, nor repress it, nor looses to it; He becomes his shadow, his desires become an usual, his lust for killing are what was his shadow, but Patrick loves himself, and loves how everyone loves him, if they don’t or if they do in a way that break Patrick’s brain crafted he’ll “kill” them. In his mind he eliminates them, but behind him, his shadow is simply not seeing these people, they’re not dead, they’re simply not there.
I think you need to see American Psycho again. Patric Bateman suffers ( he is in deep pain, as he himself say several times). The suffering come from his deep rooted narcissistic personality dissorder. The dissorder splits his mind into a inferiority complex, that he hides under a mask of superiority. He has no « self», only masks, and has nothing inside to love. He is a tragic character, that strives for perfection. To impress people who don’t know him, and who are also consumed by narcissism. That is they don’t fucking care. His real name is « Mr narcissist», behind the mask of Patric Bateman. A tragic and deeply unhappy and crazy person, with zero self love. To feel powerfull he needs attention from people he looks at as " lesser", like prostitutes. And if his inferiority complex triggers ( narcissistic rage), then the only way for him to cool down is to kill, torture, rape and so on.
And as he say his pain is constant and sharp. And there is no escape
Your videos are just insane. So glad I found your channel, can’t wait to see more of them. Nice work 👏🏼

What an incredible video and channel. Thank you for your work, I learnt a lot and really enjoyed this.
Thanks for explaining everything in the video. I did learn something from this, and though I've heard of things like this from before its great to hear your say on it through the same view with extra information.
The shadow self is what we struggle and the biggest accomplishment would be confronting our demons and becoming the monster then controlling it.
Control is the hard part for me I would say, it's a small word with a big meaning.
Stanley Kubrick's characters: Alex DeLarge, Jack Torrance, and Private Pyle are villains for different reasons:
Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange has a psychotic tendency to use violence against men and women with his fellow Droogies as it's his ultimate self. He uses the fake eyebrow as a play on femininity, mocking the softness he preys upon by directly reflecting the people who fear him. When he gets out of the prison, he's tormented and beaten to where he can't defend himself.
Jack Torrance in The Shining was a teacher and then a writer because he beat up a student. He starts to go on a downward spiral in his mind because of evil spirits in the Overlook Hotel from past alcoholism, fears of becoming an abusive father, and past trauma. He hates his family and doesn't want anything to do with them. He then tries to kill Wendy and Danny because of the soul controlling him as well as Delbert Grady wants him to take his family out when he opens the storeroom door for Jack.
Private Pyle from Full Metal Jacket didn't become a monster until the end of the first half of the film. He's trying to do right to become one of the Marines because of training from Sgt. Hartman and then gets lead by Private Joker's leadership. Once he realizes he turned into some Frankenstein monster for messing up and everyone else's mistakes, he then turns against Sgt. Hartman and shoots him but not at Private Joker as he knows Pyle and how to control him like an untamed beast. Pyle ends his life in front of him.
The overall part is how you can control the monster to win the battlefield in the mind.
@@djrv3n423 I love Stanley Kubrick's work and they're all villains I mentioned so thank you!
@@isaiahvoss how Alex deLARGE eyebrows feminism?
@@cothinker680 His eyebrow show femininity in the best of both worlds. Basically Alex wants the power of the upper class and vulgarity of mayhem with the working class due to his crimes. He's also a successful teenager that way.

Villains are heroes who were let down by their own people.
What a great video , just amazing
We are taught as kids in media and entertainment that there is only good and bad, hero and villain. But the truth is us humans are very complex and there is no one all good or all bad, we are all a shade of grey.
Also the fact that good and bad are kinda subjective
The powerful status quo are also naturally virtuous in media whilst the weak are naturally deserving of their fate, trying to change the state of things is "evil". The Rulers and the Ruled is seen as natural.
great video, great editing. great backround talking, Just found ur channel.
best video ive seen in a long time
Every villain and antagonist often adhere to the concept of nihilism and pessimist about dark side of reality
Hence why they almost always have some monolog about rationalising their actions being righteous and just. It gives a nice little dilemma. Usually before they go back to committing evil acts again.
This is art.

You deserve more!!!
W video essay! This is pretty similar to the essay I made in batman vs spiderman franchise
Your videos are great. Make more! :P
This video completely misunderstands what anti-hero means, basically leaving out the "hero" part of anti-hero.
Antiheroes are defined as being a hero lacking some heroic qualities, or a character with villainous traits, that still has heroic ones, or is a hero at core. You instead seem to confuse this with being likable or sympathizable.
1) Walter is not an antihero, he's just a villain protagonist. He originally claims to do things for his family, but eventually admits he did it all for himself. He sold crystal meth, indirectly killing many, while directly murdering multiple invididuals himself, alongside orchestrating many more killings. There is no heroic motivation, or heroic methods.
2) Similar things apply to bateman, except hes just a full murderous psychopath. Nothing heroic about him. He preaches things because he guesses its the acceptable thing. He believes none of it.
3) The joker is a tiny bit closer, but still just a villain. Arthur acts in his own self interest the entire film. You can argue his critique of the society is valid, but that doesnt mean he does it out of care for others.
4) Batman isn't an antihero, he's just a paragon hero. Dressing in black doesn't change that his goals are heroic and his methods are too. Saying he's doing it out of revenge is an uncommon interpretation, it's usually more about helping prevent it for others.
You seem go on a lot about the shadow, but that's one schema for how humans work, not some scientific fact. More importantly, this applies to real people. Fictional characters are not that. Reading shadow theory into fictional characters is pointless, unless it was intentionally written in it.
Excellent essay and very interesting and well edited. My only gripe: please please don't spoil. Never show any scene from after the first season of a series or another--thanks, that's all!
Beautiful video

I was physically, verbally, emotionally and sexually abused by my own father, my mum and stepdad were abusive. I went into a dysfunctional care home. But I will help an elderly person cross the road, if I see somebody drop even a hundred quid I'll return it with a smile. I say this, but I'd also like everybody just to drop down dead.
Very conflicted. To be nice is so wholesome, but the world isn't perfect. But I guess it isn't about ego or the shadow, despite what I've been through, I don't have much of a shadow self. The world is just grey
You can be nicest person in the world full of humanity until you are beaten down, broken and turned into an selfish vicious animal, by no fault or decision of your own. Like the joker, we are all one terrible day from falling apart.
