The Bee Gees even got to be on TV before The Beatles did, I’m guessing because Australia as a TV newcomer was desperate for domestic content and not just UK and US imports (although the Gibb family themselves were immigrants from the UK).

Maurice turning the wrong way would have been staged. The early Bee Gees were amusing at times, they didn't take themselves too seriously. I can't say that I liked them, too much of a novelty act back then. That was until they wrote a couple of good songs for Ronnie Burns and released Spicks and Specks, then I started listening.
This is when l fell for them - as an 11yr old, watching them on Aussie TV. l couldn't believe my eyes - thinking how do kids get to do stuff like this.

These clips from Bandstand were made public long after Lennon's death. Unless Barry or someone had had a personal film or audio copy and years later shown it to John, but why would they have done that? It's not as if they had reinterpreted the song and turned it into something better than the original, it's certainly not. The Bee Gees were just kids singing a song that, at that time was new, by a new group making a bit of a name for themselves in the UK called The Beatles. The first Beatles' single to be released in Australia was "Please Please Me/Ask Me Why" on February 21 1963 around about the time of this TV broadcast.
