- Madison Square Garden 1974 November 28 (Thanksgiving). John Lennon came on stage as special guest at the Elton John concert and they did three songs together. We all know the story ......
When John Lennon was recording his "Walls and Bridges" album in 1974, he invited Elton to help him out on a couple of tracks - "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" and "Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)". This was around the same time they also worked together on Elton's releases "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "One Day at a Time". Lennon said of Elton, "I was amazed at his ability. A fine musician, great piano player. I was really pleasantly surprised at the way he could get in on such a loose track and add to it and keep up with the rhythm changes". As Elton and Lennon were enjoying themselves greatly during the recording session, Elton asked Lennon if he would do "Whatever Gets You Thru" with him on stage. Lennon, who no longer performed live, jokingly promised to do so when the song became a #1 hit single. In November that year, it did hit #1, Lennon's only solo single to do so. Elton called him up and reminded him of the promise, and Lennon appeared on stage for three numbers at Elton's concert at Madison Square Garden, New York City in 1974. Lennon was terrified, and nearly backed out several times. Finally, as Elton introduced him, he suddenly turned to Bernie Taupin back stage, and said, "I'm not going on unless you go with me". Bernie walked him out to the stage, gave him a light push, and said, "You're on your own". When he came on stage, the audience of 18,000 rose to their feet and applauded for several minutes before they were able to perform the three songs, the final one being the old Beatles' hit "I Saw Her Standing There", which was a song Paul McCartney (not John Lennon!) had sung. It was the first time Lennon sang the song! Elton has said many times that this whole event was one of the high points of his career. - Hudba
My first concert at 14. One of the best nights of my life.
U were so lucky I was 13 but I got was the 45rpm at Christmas
you are incredibly lucky
Wow. You started off with a gem
It was one of the most memorable shows of my life , I was 15
NYC in the 70s was nuts!
Fantastic 👏👏👏👏
I can´t understand why an event like this was not filmed.
As I understood the story, nobody knew Lennon was going to show.
One of the best covers I've heard Elton John sing. And to have John Lennon had to have been quite an honour.
I was there!! First concert ever...I was THIRTEEN!! I had no idea what history I was witness to.
I am so lucky to say that I was there that night with my sister Diane and our friend Paul. I was a ripe young age of 16.....GREAT night !!!!!!
I was born in the wrong time period...THIS is what true music and talent is all about.
In his final interview John said there wasn't a Beatles song that he recorded that he would not have recorded again. This is a good Beatles song, but Elton John truly gives the song its mystic feel that is deserves. John's studio version is the best. A true improvement on the original. I love that you can hear Lennon singing in the chorus. Lennon wrote most of it, Paul contributed. A lyrical masterpiece.
4.04 is where you can hear Lennon, solo. Elton was cool and let JL sing this one part alone. Not only so we could hear him, but also because JL needed someone to give him support and self esteem once again. And remember, too, this is the big night when EJ said he had a big surprise for JL...YOKO was backstage, ready to take John back. Sean would become the next big surprise due to that night with Elton! EJ went on to be Sean Lennon's Godfather!
Love this stuff!!
elton john's voice in the 70's is honestly amazing
Whatever anybody says Elton John sang very beautiful this song and i bet john lennon was impressed as i am❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I agree with you.
ELTON JOHN LENNON!
Elton has been grateful to John his entire life for playing together in NYC. That honors him.
There are no words to explain how special this is.
Thank you Elton John and Dr.Winston O' Boogie.
I absolutely love this so much ❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏😘😘😘😘👍👍👍👍👍
What a combination ,ELTON and LENNON , I think this Is the best live vversions I have heard .
I still can't believe Lennon is no longer with us. Thank God we still have is music today!!! RIP JOHN
John Lennon was a genius!Wow!Wat a great song he wrote!
Lennon shines on...
John Lennon wrote the lyrics and Paul McCartney wrote the chorus. Elton John covered the song with touches from Lennon - a reggae chorus, backing vocals, and guitar. This was the period when all Elton did was drop gold! Elton's version blew everyone's mind and was a major number one hit single in the United States! It freaked me out when I first heard the Beatles version later!
John composed the entire song pretty much. Paul helped with the chorus. Those chord and key changes are signature Lennon, more complex than McCartney’s more conventional style at the time
I was there that Thanksgiving night on 1974
You lucky person.
@@eileenryan2248 He played "Your Song" and the Garden was illuminated by matches and candles. It seemed like daylight...
I doubt he was high look again please. He looks like master pianist performing his craft and enjoying himsfhimsf.I think hes wonderful in every😊way much love from this fan❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My sister was at this show and I am still envious over 40 years later.
John Ozed I feel you
I was 11 years old at the time. I already liked Elton John's songs and I can say that the studio version of this song was wonderful, Elton's peculiar way of playing the piano was simply incredible, magical...
It’s a beatles song
@@nessearthbound9864 I know... but I think Elton John's version of the song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is more interesting and creative than the Beatles' version.
Good Lord what talent. This generation of musicians were the best. No auto tune no loops nothing but pure unadulterated talent. I grew up to Elton John’s music in the 70’s and I miss this music so much. Today’s music lacks heart and soul. I think Elton in his prime was one of the best vocalists also I’ve. He could sing just about any genre and do it massive justice.
What do we have now? SMH.
Always loved that outro with Elton. He added that extra... Lucy .
I was 16 when I discovered Elton john am 57 and still enjoy his music
I was there at MSG that day, i still remember like it was yesterday...i was 12 rows from EJ and JL. So happy i got to see JL !!
This should of been a video❤❤❤❤❤❤
The bassline on this is outrageously good
Dee Murray. In the Classic Albums documentary on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, producer Gus Dudgeon lauded Murray's musical ability, and said he hadn't heard a bassist quite as good as him.
@@MrSupernils Now that's the type of information laden reply we appreciate 'round these parts. Thank you.
Dee Murray was one of the greatest bassist! RIP.
i was there !!!!!!!! 7 years old
I was there that night. Elton john had another show the next night but Lennon only played The Thursday show..
Two greatest musicians together.... Regret there's no film taken. That's very sad.
I hit like before I even heard the song...lol
I was so glad to have been a teenager during this time!
Thanks for sharing, great quality! I was there that night, it was my birthday and I turned 15, I can’t believe how quick the years have passed, thank God I’m still here to relive the memory, LOL!
Cool! UR very welcome 🙂 Thank U 4 sharing!
Thanksgiving, Kiki dee and Lennon 15 as well
happy birthday
Wow I wish I would have seen this concert 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
We miss You John Lennon. May you be Free As A Bird.
In my opinion,Elton did a spectacular rendition of "Lucy".
For decades I've called this the single greatest recording of all time. I expect to go to my grave standing by that... 👍
BEAUTIFUL version! Thank you for posting!...
UR Welcome!
Elton John's recording of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is maybe the only occasion in which a Beatles' cover was actually as good as or better than the original.
Close but not better. Never has been, never will be.
Better in my opinion. And the Beatles are my favorite group.
Also, first artist to get a number 1 from a Beatles song.
@@eileenryan2248
Completely agree. This is the best rendition.
Sure wish there was a video out there to view…
Excellent version! This was in the days when Elton had a great singing voice. Shame that these live performances were never filmed though.
There's a great BBC film of another concert this same year (74) - no John Lennon, but Rod Stewart appears at the end. Very good televised concert.
Elton still does have a great singing voice, just a different range
Not a big deal but I was born on October 9th and John was and still is my musical master. Plus Elton ahhhhhh I'm a girl screaming at their concert
Hey Ronnie Friend, good, no... GREAT story you took the time to type up there for us.
Lennon was dissatisfied with The Beatles' recording of t"Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", and loved Elton's version of the song, especially the reggae section. He sang backup when Elton recorded the song and you can (barely) hear him singing it live. The mix of this recording is rough; I don't know if it's a soundboard mix or if it was recorded with microphones. There is film of "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," but I don't know if the film crew recorded the other two songs. As far as I know, no remastered or remixed recordings of these songs has ever been officially released.
THIS IS NOT JOHN LENNON'S LAST LIVE PERFORMANCE!
John Lennon's last performance in front of an audience was April 18, 1975. He performed for a studio audience who watched the taping of the "Tribute to Sir Lew Grade" television broadcast. According to Elliott Mintz, in 1978, Lennon played "Jealous Guy" for a Japanese couple who accidentally entered his Tokyo hotel suite and thought they were in a bar. They had no idea who he was, and left when no one came to give them a menu or take their drink order.
i bought this song in 1975 as a huge elton fan.....i was 7 years old...
and i was someone troubled that this new elton song wasnt written by elton and bernie BUT by some "nobodies" - john lennon and paul mccartney....i swear as i was so impressed with elton's new song that i decided to ask around about these 2 men.........who knew??
As a massive Beatles fan, and more over specifically a Lennon fan (no one is was or will be better than that man), I think Elton's version may be almost better the original. That's usually hard to admit but we all know Elton is a huge talent and to just say he did this song justice seems to undermine exactly what he did with his version. He elevated it.
I think it may be the funk beat.
Same here..... Huge John fan from back in the 70s.... but I agree.... and also their voices sound so good together
I like it better than the original. Elton's pure voice and the rich music elevate it.
No doubt. John improved on the song giving it its mystic feel.
Now that is what I call a great duet. Two great talents.
all the johns...best musicians ever!!
you can't buy class and talent like this, its why elton is still around today, and so would have john..... magnificent music also lives forever...... ynwa john......rip
Adoro a voz e o piano de Elton John!
It would've been the first and only time Lennon played this masterpiece live, but Elton John has to sing most of the song because it's his show, I love Elton, but man come on.
They were playing his version of the song...
I'm fine with it's his version of the song. That said, having Lennon sing a verse would've been very cool.
@@user-tb2wz1tr8y John was terrified of playing live at this point...
I'll never forget seeing him at Live Peace In Toronto (one of his few shows as a single)... Tickets were cheap and just a few days before it we were driving up the main downtown TO drag when it was announced he was coming over with Clapton and Co... amazing!
And John was great, in white from head to toe along with his White Epiphone... Yoko did her bag act and ruined a couple of songs but it was amazing to see... and you could hear it... loved it!
It should have been John Lennon singing this song
A rare milestone to see the two Johns performing together; a historical event.
and how could this not be on video? 😭
lennons last concert performance

@@RonnieFriend that's not the song
No, there's no real video of the song. But that video at least shows some very rare film clips of the actual concert including EJ & Lennon together.....
Its not like they knew it would be SUCH an important event. Recording stuff on film wasn't cheap (at all) and required a lot of planning to do so.
@@vitorbastos123 its elton john lennon. very important. lol
Fantastic!
The drums and bass sound so tight, great live production
Side note; was hoping John would sing this 😔
I have owned this record for a long time. It is on a 12" single. Prob out of my 1500 records, this is at the top! The closest I ever came to see a video! I think that is Lennon at the end singing Lucy about 3 times.
Beautiful, Elton and John... great era of rock n roll...
São dois maravilhosos artistas:John Lennon e Elton John, juntos!
Brother John made THIS an event ! Brother John sitting on a park bench was an event. ❤️one and only 🚬😎💩
Ear candy
That bass intro tho
Dee Murray...incredible playing...
Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray were a fantastic rhythm section
Absolutely brilliant!
Davey is the most underrated guitarist ...
One of the greatest covers ever. Elton made this his own. GREAT!
My dad turned me on to this song
Now he has been killed
Miss him. Still got this jam

When I was 20 yrs I watched Elton perform "Your Song" with the London Symphony Orchestra. From then on, I was and still am a great follower of his music. This is an accolade to his musicianship.
Excellent!!!!!!
I saw EJ last year here in McAllen Texas, a small backwater place in deep south texas.(i couldnt believe he was coming here!) I have seen a lot of shows, Mccartney, dire strats, clapton, winwood, but i have never been to a better show than Eltons. I became a big fan overnight. I always like lucy by him, but i was totally blown away by him and his band also. Elton, I hope you get this message. You are one of the best. John would be proud.
Thanks!
This remindes me of my childhood.... great song and a great interpreter...thanx for posting
I was only two at the time of this concert but oh how I so wish I could have been there to see it...probably one of the greatest concerts in the histoiry of music....
Stupendi entrambi
Me too--I was 8 or 9 and the electricity coming off that 45 still gives me goose bumps almost 40 years later...10,000 years from now someone/thing will come across that "B" side and say: "Hey these guys knew how to party!" :-)
happy birthday john!
Perhaps the greatest musician of our time,
Elton John Lennon.
Essa gravação é demaiss! Tks por postar!
Amazing, this is SO COOL!!GENIUS.
If you ever manage to see it...there'a 1990 John Lennon tribute show that was hosted by Michael Douglas ( the actor ) that featured a cover of Lucy done by Natalie Cole that's pretty incredible too...
yup this song was no doubt an acid trip...allthough the bass and the words are above reality...amazing!!!!
I was there that night and I said to my girlfriend that something very special was going to happen tonight. Later, John Lennon came on and it was like Beatle mania all over again; they were great together. I'll never forget that concert.
this song is soooo trippy i love watchin the yellow submarine version too BEATLES LEGENDS FOREVER!!!
