- Madison Square Garden 1974 November 28 (Thanksgiving). John Lennon came on stage as special guest at the Elton John concert and they did three songs together. We all know the story ......
When John Lennon was recording his "Walls and Bridges" album in 1974, he invited Elton to help him out on a couple of tracks - "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" and "Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)". This was around the same time they also worked together on Elton's releases "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "One Day at a Time". Lennon said of Elton, "I was amazed at his ability. A fine musician, great piano player. I was really pleasantly surprised at the way he could get in on such a loose track and add to it and keep up with the rhythm changes". As Elton and Lennon were enjoying themselves greatly during the recording session, Elton asked Lennon if he would do "Whatever Gets You Thru" with him on stage. Lennon, who no longer performed live, jokingly promised to do so when the song became a #1 hit single. In November that year, it did hit #1, Lennon's only solo single to do so. Elton called him up and reminded him of the promise, and Lennon appeared on stage for three numbers at Elton's 1974 New York City concert at Madison Square Garden. Lennon was terrified, and nearly backed out several times. Finally, as Elton introduced him, he suddenly turned to Bernie Taupin back stage, and said, "I'm not going on unless you go with me". Bernie walked him out to the stage, gave him a light push, and said, "You're on your own". When he came on stage, the audience of 18,000 rose to their feet and applauded for several minutes before they were able to perform the three songs, the final one being the old Beatles' hit "I Saw Her Standing There", which was a song Paul McCartney (not John Lennon!) had sung. It was the first time Lennon sang the song! Elton has said many times that this whole event was one of the high points of his career. - Hudba
"An old, estranged fiancé of mine called Paul" - I love it
MI HIJA DE 11 AÑOS ME DICE QUE ERAN NOVIOS¡¡¡¡ MEJOR NO LE HAGO ESCUCHAR ESTA DECLARACION DE JOHN¡¡¡
I was one of the lucky ones. My first concert, at the age of 15. I thought they'd all be like that. Unbelievable.
Was at the right place at the right time. Kiki Dee opened, then a video "take me to the pilot" video, then Elton for Funeral for a Friend. John Lennon. Great time. Thanks for the memories.
Lucky you
John singing this song just feels so right.
"Estranged fiance of mine called Paul"
I have a bad memory, but I most certainly remember that concert...incredible event!! I was 17.
Lennon-McCartney Forever.
Elton is also magical.
A scorcher! Rusty as he was live, Lennon still belts this out. The reason for his appearance was that Elton bet him that Whatever Gets You Through The Night would be a number one in the US. Lennon didn't think it would be, and this was the forfeit - to appear live on stage with Elton. Well done Elton, you ought to have had a few more bets with Lennon ..... a fantastic night, shame there were only three numbers - I bet the crowd wished they would have gone on for another two hours .....
I used to go to my local bar, when this came on the jukebox the place went crazy
Very cool... John Lennon WAS the Beatles!
The Beatles were all four of them. Nothing less, nothing more.
What a dynamite team! John and Elton! I also loved the "I Feel Fine" riff at 0:57!
Good ear!
Ryan Power, they just had to tease us with a taste of The Beatles!
Thanksgiving at the garden 1974,I was there with 2 friends from Old Bethpage. 15 years old
45 years ago today. We love you and we miss you John.
We will always remember John Lennon
The Beatles really went on with their careers that they never played their older songs ever again after recording it like bands do nowadays so it seems like they forgot about it. Its nice to hear John perform this song 10-11 years after recording and doing it live with The Beatles.
I was lucky enough to be at this show. Sat in the first row of the blue seats right above the stage. This song, not I Wanna Hold Your Hand, is what got me hooked on the Beatles in '63. To hear John sing this song LIVE is still the greatest concert experience I've ever had. Miss you John!
G-D Bless John Lennon.........your music is LEGEND......and we miss you terribly. We wish you were "Here Today"
I wish I had been there "all those years ago" to see them perform
I can't remember how long it was before I flipped over my single of Philadephia Freedom and heard this, but after I did, it got played more than the A side.
@pianorman 'Slippin' and slidin' was an absolute screamer - even after all those years, Lennon nails his colours to the mast as an out-an-out solid gold rocker.
The greatest live collaboration of all time
"estranged fiance" ... not ex or something xD so sweet, John
Oh yes two greatest of all time john and Elton.
pase el tiempo que pase cuando la musica es buena siempre estara!!!!!!! EN NUESTRA MENTE Y EN NUESTROS OIDOS
"And we thought we'd do a number of an old estranged finacé of mine called Paul..." awwww
The Elton John Band....memories!! had the pleasure of seeing Elton and the boys in concert in Tulsa the year after John was murdered.
This song has great energy.
pase el tiempo que pase cuando la musica es buena siempre estara!!!!!!!
Awwww the bromance of john and paul is the greatest in historyyy, they are the best songwriting partnership everr
One of those rare moments in rock greats get it on. Must quite a moment to see. A personal triumph for Lennon at the end of a long string of bad.
Esta es la mejor version de esta cancion sin duda!
For me, this is the best version of this song
I feel fine 0:56 💛
holy moly. good ear
I was at this concert. Great night. Seeing Lennon live on stage ( at what turned out to be his last stage appearance ever ) was really special. RIP John. As long as music is played, you will be remembered and loved.
Was there on that extraordinary Thanksgiving night, mind blowing experience, two of the most gifted musicians on earth!
Pure Magic!
Gloria Oconnor me too, Gloria!
I was there too!
i love that he calls paul his old fiance. he always tended to talk about him like that, like they used to be a couple.
I can't miss this opportunity to say how much I adore John Lennon. When it comes to music and true feeling, nobody can top him for honesty enlivened by wit and the most beautiful singing, whether sad or exuberant. or somewhere in between.
Great moment. No matter the state of their personal relationship over the years, John and Paul always respected each other's songs, and this little nod from John made a nice olive branch.
DAYUM. I was 15 years old and I don't even remember if I wanted to go to this concert, though my parents would've said no. I did see Elton a few years later in Philly, but never John. Oh the opportunities we miss when we don't know what we're missing :(
The two rock and roll singers I admire the most.
my to fav johns!
john lenon forever
He's not dead... He's only sleeping.
YES! YES! YES!
The last time john sang a beatle song live! 😔
In early '81- right after Lennon's murder- a DC station (Q107) played this "Philadelphia Freedom" B-side frequently!
He was murdered 😭😭😭😪🙏🕯🩷💘🩷🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🏆🕊💐in December of **1980**...

Well spotted, i've had this track for twenty odd years and never noticed that.
Elton John/John Lennon great combo!!

what a great version of a classic song, it's almost equal in size
fooking awesome
Lennon, Lennon siempre..
Wow! You're one of the lucky ones. My sister "saw" the Beatles live at Dodger stadium, but she's passed now. When the Beatles played, they opened up the outfield bleachers to blind kids from the Braille Institute here in LA. They couldn't see the stage, but who cared?
Thank you Ronnie for posting, such a beautiful memory for me, 1974 at Madison Square Garden with my big brother!
@VinylCentral
Wow! Under the radar.
Was at this concert at MSG. One of the best of all times. Elton reunited John with Yoko who was there
I have the 45 rpm with Philadelphia Freedom on one side, and this song on the other. 40 years ago today!!
I wish someone had brought a video camera to this show!
Thanks for posting this! This was the B-side to my Philadelphia Freedom 45 and one of the first songs I ever rocked out to.

Man, I used to own this 45...was the B-side to "Philadelphia Freedom"...I feel old lol
This performance is so perfect. Too bad they couldn't have teamed up and done an album together
They actually had discussed going out on tour together when Double Fantasy was released, but of course that was not to be, sadly. Would have been awesome to see them on a double bill! Can you imagine it?
Boogie man!
I wonder if John would have sang some other Paul written Beatles songs later in life. I'm sure that eventually he would have incorporated his Beatles songs into his solo sets like Paul does now.
I’m pretty sure this is the last song he performed live so if that’s any indication of anything than ofc he would’ve probably earlier songs
@@kristoamadeus4441 The choice of this song might have somewhat been out of necessity, as the two of them had very little material in common after 'Whatever Gets You Through the Night' and 'Lucy in the Sky'. I Saw Her Standing There was surely a popular staple that Elton's band knew well enough, and a convenient choice to just bash out in the absence of much rehearsal. John L obviously sang this one pretty regularly at one time, just that he did the harmony parts rather than the lead. I'm surprised he didn't revert to singing harmony for at least one of the verses rather than belt out the lead vocal in unison with Elton...?
@@orchidwave2574 i don’t think so with any other band maybe but ofc they knew other Beatles songs
@VinylCentral Indeed. Good ear!
Forever, and it's not even close to a maybe!
God damn. What artist hasn't done a cover of this with a beatle? lol. Springsteen, Beck, Elton, Joel, Jagger, Dylan has all done this classic. Probably more.
Wow! Thanks so much.
I'd love to know what they thought of playing with John.
@rudeger66 Thumbs up for that one! Me too! And you probably remember that little intro speech word for word too!
WOW this is so amazing!! I wonder how Paul must of felt. :') even when they weren't in speaking terms he still sings this.
