I get a lot of questions on mining, and how to get into it. Today were going to discuss if you should get into Mining in 2022?
Ill walkabout the pros and cons, and my thoughts on the industry now that covid is finished and the world is back to semi normal.

Just stumbled across your video, and a great insight into the industry.
Worked in the mining industry 30 years ago, some things have obviously changed, and some things have remained the same.
It wasn't FIFO, but lived in a company camp in the township (in Northen Territory).
Accommodation was pretty ordinary, meals were okay but repetitive and on-site "friends" are really only work colleagues,
so if your stuck with a crap work crew things aren't much fun!
We had a lot of freedom to pretty much do whatever we wanted outside of work hours, but we were still isolated from loved ones back home.
You might be surrounded by people, but can be as lonely as hell!
I got out after 2 years, realising it wasn't for me long-term.

I appreciate the honesty and you've talked me out of going for it, for good reason. I just looked at the money and didnt factor in everything that you miss, even the time spent on site that you aren't paid for. I think the time spent at home at the end of the day and weekends is more valuable than I gave credit for
Yeah unfortunately the propaganda they sell to the public is misleading at best. I think the money has to get better soon as the big companies are losing people at an unsustainable rate. We are running on bare minimum constantly nowadays and way behind in services and so much new blood only a matter of time till we get a fatality of which weâve been telling management for years about . I wish you the best with whatever decision you make and good luck đ€ đ

I worked in the aussie HV/LV electricity sector till just a few years ago. The company was one of the last to streamline and corporatise. After a restructure my role instantly went from being a friendly, satisfying dream job to a job from hell and i couldn't hack it. I sympathise with your politics, KPIs, constant monitoring and reporting, and your 'heads down' approach. No workplace can resist the corporate carrot these days unfortunately.
Theres a special place in hell for the people who invented KPI`s.

Pretty much just different pressures, the worst thing with management is job security. when iron ore was $50 a tonne 7-8 years ago all the engineers on site and all contractors got let go or sacked in a 2 wk period. i was step up superintendent at that stage and had to give the news to 6 contractors all at once after prestart. the tradies at least hav that value where they will be the last to go before they close the doors. So get into lithium or nickel. 5 years ago nickel west was just about shut down it got to $100 a tonne and they were laying off everywhere. now with these silly electric cars which we don't have enough lithium or nickel on he planet to supply its up to $60000 a tonne . Coal is probably the one you need to be careful in in OZ but i still think short term you can get in and out and pay off some debt.

Great content mate. I've been looking at drill and blast jobs in the mines as I'm not skilled and need to get on my feet. But I haven't been vaccinated and it seems most places require a vaccination even though getting one doesn't reduce the chances of transmission. Do you know why they are required? Even in the mines that are out in the open and not just underground, thanks.
yeah still on going they won't change it unfortunately hence the massive shortfall of staff. Th only reason i think they still do it is to save profit as less chance of entire site shutting down for a week or more. Money wise that could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars lost hence why they play super scared we only just stopped having to test before flying to site in october. which was a pain in the butt.
Hey man came back to this video alongside the topic I was looking into: mining jobs as tyre fitting OTR for earth moving vehicles. Starting a job with OTR tyres iinvolved and hoping it gives me a pathway to the mines. Been told its paying $60-80 an hour. 12 hour days yea bring it already been through that. Im a mehcnaic but happy to keep it as a hobby for now. Money sis one thing but looking at being occupied as Im 28, and working a lot anyway, so willing to sacrifice 2 years working and reevaluate. Not too interested in diesel mechanic, taking a step off that physcial and dirty work. Tyre fitttning at a local shop with some mechanics, much better fot he time being rather dealership work style, loving it.

good example of how bad mining has become, my employer currently had a team investigating me for 6 months. And putting me up for ethics breach for using block letters, when i send messages on group chat! i can't say it any more clearer RUN from mining! Apparently that's offensive now days ?????

I'd recommend working on a cotton farm/broad acre farm if you are all about your mechanics and machinery. Based on what I'm watching here, the life style and pay works out way better.
Yeah wasnât always this way but the company is getting worse only now that we are way understaffed they admitted to bad retention haha no one left we literally run out pit on most days 2 fitters for 80 machines . Not much can do but survive
Ever meet or hear about people getting into the WA mining industry on a work visa sponsorships or similar?
Specifically im intrested in locomotive driver jobs, im currently working as a mainline driver hauling freight in scandinavia. Anyways intresting video!
Yeah those rail jobs are highly sort after be very tricky . Even if you worked for the company it would be hard generally used to reward and also fill quotas for Kpiâs unfortunately. Never say never tho if you have the skills they still need someone who knows what theyâre doing to actually drive them. I know they are looking at automated trains for our company so be no drivers soon same as mining trucks
What do you think about mechanical fitters in the mines? From what Iâve seen the salary looks really good above the $50 $60 an hour
yeah about $50 an hour, but make sure you balance what you lose, lifestyle and work wise it can be good if you have a plan to get out once youve achieved a goal but most long term end up regretting it
I started doing fifo 6 months ago. 2:1 roster. My starting rate is really good. Have paid off almost all
my debt and have had more money on my bank than ever before in my life. It is hard and long fortnights though. Canât deny that.
Awesome to hear , now your sorted maybe think of a goal like house to pay off or exit strategy. As over time of that roster youâll start missing out on life more and more . Great job of getting rid of debt itâs an awesome feeling , for sure.
@@34Media Bought my house nearly 10 years ago on an average wage. But will definitely start putting more money into the mortgage. Ideally do this job for a while, then look for an 8:6 roster mate.

Been heavily considering coming into the mines to earn a buck and stack it away for the next 3-5 years. Was wondering what type of money could a storesperson/manager be looking at and how hard it would be to land a gig?

contracting is best way to get in, if lucky enough to get in which is the hard part then no reason 80-100 grand wouldn't be feasible the mines all have large parts/logictic depts and constantly turning over staff. hope this helps

Very informative video but just a quick update. I'm starting as a Chef under a JRP program which means I am not qualified yet and have the lowest salary among all other chefs as I have just finished my school but I was offered 90 annual as full-time + super and all other allowances and penalties. Casuals do get a lot for sure.

Hey Mate thank you for being honest in you review of the mining life im moving over to Brisbane from NZ in February and looking into mining would you say the industry is still the same?
as i haven't worked in east coast mining which is heavy on unions which have no power in western Australia still . its very different , weve had a few people leave form iron ore to go to coal in qld and within a month come back saying it was way worse on the work side for the big Australian company conditions in camp s i think and wages will be different and weve had a few people say its better on the comments here on this video if that helps . generally its all pretty much the same its a shit job for decent money if your willing to sacrifice your life for a few years to get yourself sorted i would still recommend
@@34Media thanks for the insight I've been in the roading industry for a decade when I first started it was a shit show mangers and formans would verbally abuse new worker and the turn over was crazy we would get a new worker ever week cause of the culture they had back then now it's all settled down a bit the only thing with the company I was working for the pay was crap even till now and I've been there for over a decade now finally moving on hopefully to a better opportunity

Interesting to hear about the food. I always found OD (Olympic Dam) food pretty good. Also your flights, basically every mine in SA is free FIFO.. Sounds like you need to come to SA. My mate is a mechanic with CAT in OD, he only works 5 months of the year, is on $130k and now buying his second home (investment property)... He loves mining, think you need to get out of that particular mine site.
They went all healthy salad style food for a bit and we are starting to see some real food come back to site after a lot of complaints.
Smaller camps are wears its at, i work 4 weeks on 2 weeks off in northern canada as an offsider. Food is always amazing, smaller camps everyone knows eachother and its starts to feel like a family for those 4 weeks. Honestly the saddest part is leaving at the end if the rotation since ya never know if you will see then again if they were a good crew

very simialr to the mechainci side mate maybe a little bit better wages. obviously if in the pilbara its not much fun on a 50 dge day soyoull earn your money on those days generally its lots of repetative bucket work or handraisl if in truck dept

I'm an auto electrician, been looking at jobs in pilbra. got a question about tooling... are tools provided? if not, in my case i have a very large toolbox and is it secure while off shift? will the company pay for the freight? the other question, the advertisement says they'll relocate my family into housing there, my family is a dog lol are pets included in this?
Grab a forkable pallet box from Bunnings or alike . Youâll get a tool cupboard at work and work from bags mostly. Ask def about all on offer when moving they should pay for the lot including pet moving and rent for at least a month or two . Make sure they give to you in writing

Cheers for popping in. Unfortunately all wa is mandated including businesses that deal with mining companies by wa govt. I did hear that somehow they were going to backflip on this even tho it cost a lot of people their careers. If your driving water trucks pretty much the same and you still should have a good chance for sure. We have water cart ops that are now driving diggers after 6 months as there is op shortage. Unfortunately like always still takes forever to get a job. Contract is a great way to show your metal and meeet the supervision team and get in the back door . Good luck đ€

Yeah there are better sites , this used to be really good here until current owners took over and each site changes all the time. generally most aren't that flash. Ive only been to maybe 2 mine sites that was impressed by .

Ive worked the Last 6 years in the conveyor technology AS a industry mechanic in a Big company which means that I will probably take jobs as a boilermaker or a mechanic ( boilermaker earns more Money?!) I got my visa, paid for my RPL today + a professional CV + LinkedIn account. I hope that this will give me the best chances in difficult times. I want to fly to Australia in April and do the White Card & inductions to start as soon as possible, because the tax reset will follow on 01.07, right? Do you have any tips and tricks? I've read through almost all the videos and comments. Thank you for that !
Sounds like you've done most of the hard work mate i wish you all the best. remember sometimes easier to go to site as a contractor then meet the bosses and get a job with the big companies that way. Our HR is in the phillipines so going thru normal route is a nightmare we cant even get help form them . so i can only imagine someone trying to get a job would have dramas. Any way i hope it works out and you find a good site and company to work with !

hi mate , ESS is the site camp facility group they clean rooms gardens cook bar work etc its form 60-80 grand shouldn't need experience and will get you on site where you will meet people . a lot of people have started working for the camp running groups and through meeting people they get a job with the mining company

yeah mate def can do . things have changed on teh physical side to ensure us older blokes dont get hurt the mental side is the tricky part but have that game plan in place and be a mushroom is teh secret to staying out of trouble

Can you recommend jobs that don't need a C-class Australian driver's license in mining fields? I consider utility, scaffolders at first..
drill and blast jobs are pretty easy no skills required or management generally have no skills as well
currently in NZ in earth moving getting up at 4:30 getting home at 7 ish only 5 days a week for $30 lucky to be single with no family things a tad more expensive now than 18 years ago when i started on $25, 3 of my workmates just left to Aussie not working in mines but they are all on around 2-3 times the kiwi rate for the same work, Its very tempting to jump across the pond.
yes ive heard nz getting very expensive I think were heading down the same bad path too here in Aus with house prices and need to work in mines just to afford a house mortgage now days . basic wage around 115000 per year for trade hasn't gone up since it was that in the 90's somehow but company profits up every year go figure and they keep whinging about having to pay royalties and taxes . def do what you have to do mate to get by that's what im doing to feed the family. good luck sorry for late reply
I like working in the mining there with experience as a haultruck operator, but don't know which company can facilitate it.
so many mate try bhp, rio , fmg, roy hill, to start with and then there are hundreds of smaller companies in different minerals to try
What is the difference between being a contracter and not. Would be good if you could explain more about that aspect?
Hi mate , am due for a new video for my mining series . Short answer is security. Youâll make more money contracting but you will get times when you donât work for 3 months. With a family and once you get older tend to trade money for security for your family.

I'm an OT Systems Engineer and my base is 172k on an 8:6 full time with the client I think the money is pretty good

Good video pretty much nailed everything except for the drugs, Iâve had supervisors and superintendents on the gear, I was in construction, first one G3 project Gove, we had it good then, no drugs, other than the 4-1, work 14 days on, 15th day off, work another 14 then fly home, but fly days were on there time and payed travelling to home and we had 7 days at home, great food, great camp, good back then, the drugs came later mostly on my last on Cirtis Is Gladstone Qld, I finished 2016, ICE was bad.
yeah def still around all teh chemicals are still being used as tongue testing only works 48 hours out . with bar restrictions and all teh rules people are always going to look for some way to release the companies dont understand that and treat people liek inmates. my younger years on road jobs everyone was drunk and wasted but teh differenece was people looked after each other and if you couldnt do your job then DCM hope your found a new life out side mining and doing ok mate

I suggest looking at contractors first they maybe able to assist with work visa more easily . Someone like Mader as they do lots of international work might be a good start
Iâve been working in processing for a bit over a year now. I never had any desire to get on the mines. In fact I hated the idea. Pretty much the only reason I gave it a go is because after being a concreter and steel fixer for 15 years, Iâm now still in my 30s and have the body of a car crash victim! It was a tough decision. I hated it. Not only because In my last career I had done a lot of work for the mines and I knew that the mining industry was a sh*tshow. But also because, like you said itâs all safety and sh*t. Iâd stepped out of a 15 year career where it was hard, full on, dangerous and no mucking around and got into a job where everyone is standing around for 45 minutes smoking and talking sh*t because weâre waiting for a signature on a piece of paper. Adapting to the mining life was really hard. But not because the work was hard, but way too easy. And even the most simple of tasks are far more complicated than they should be. Itâs almost like they donât even want you to work in case you get hurt. đ
But you know, itâs really not all bad. The shop prices at our site, even smokes are pretty much the same as Coles and woollies. The food is actually really good. The camp is quite comfortable. Everyone gets along great. The newer rooms are great. Although it is strict, itâs not too insane. Thereâs cameras everywhere but eyes arenât on you 24/7. Swearing is a lot more looser than some other places. So long as youâre not swearing while (being caught) defaming someone, itâs pretty relaxed. The 2.2 roster works out awesome because when I was concreting, I was lucky to be home 8 days a month. And when I was home I was always injured, chronically fatigued and getting ready to go away again in a day or two. My wife hated it, so the family life has actually improved dramatically! Being in a loader on a regular basis is good too as it breaks the monotony. Our supervisors are awesome and pretty easy to get along with (but not so much the managers), And I think the biggest benefit is that thereâs no snitches. We all share a good mateship, we can all talk to each other in confidence because most of all, as you also said. Nobody wants to be there. Everyone hates it and itâs that mutual hatred that keeps everyone together. đ

Def better to be prepared, the propaganda that the mining companies are from the same school as the government. Most important is to have a plan if youâre going to do it . So you can get out itâs not something anyone should plan to do with their life. Just a way to get a step up or to help achieve goals
Yea definitely money is not as good, I work in WA within the mining industry. The sites I have come across working in safety talking with some of the chefs and staff working within the camp itself⊠it appears that you can make some serious cash as a chef if you go causal with all the labour hire agencyâs out there now chefs are so sort after some chefs are getting $50+ an hour as casual. Iâm saying that though the hourly rate is more attractive you donât receive those sick days, holidays etc. Additionally I believe that some sites are really good when it comes to the stores for example my site donât mark up there items they sell it for what they buy it for, they therapy around this is it increase moral and provides an additional service to the staff on site, it also increases retention within the mine. 100% agree money is not as good as it was. Fantastic video very informative. Looking to relocate back to the city for work as for me the pros for mining have diminished.
Cheers mate, def agree with you on providing cheaper food on site to purchase. There is so much teh mining companies could do to keep people and attract new people but they are poorly run at top level by bean counters who have no idea what its like to live in the bush. Our site just spent millions on rape doors that don't work to protect us form ourselves meanwhile food has become dismal and another 3 people on our crew alone just quit as they have had enough of the penny pinching while the company brags about record profits and wastes money on useless stuff that does nothing to help anyone. pretty soon all we will have is TA's which is nowhere near safe !
@@34MediaYea working at mid level management⊠I 100% agree. These mining companies are lining the pockets of their investors, executive management and local interests. I have witnessed first hand the corrupt mindset of some high level managers who are promised bonuses etc on their ability to cut costs and the expense of the working man and women on site. After bringing this up in a meeting⊠I received a termination letter the following week. Currently looking at putting forth a unfair dismissal but knowing how deeply ingrained the top executives reach goes I doubt I will get very fair with it. Best bet is to start with a labour hire company that way you cna get a feel for teh mien see if its any good and then swap over to the company running the mine

Hi there , yeah i spent a lot of my life doing road work concrete companies small contractors etc. And i think sometimes a small company has a lot of advantages, as a mechanic you hav to learn to think for yourself. You have to actually fix the machine where as in mining its just replacing parts. Our breakdown team which is 4 filters and 1 sparky/fitter do all the breakdowns for entire mine of 150+ machines and they would be one ones that actually fix or patch things up. Ive been contractor where had no sparky no tyre filters and had to learn to do the lot. So he work is def harder bu as a smaller team you're actually appreciated for what you do. Minings the only place ive worked where the most unskilled people on site run the business which is scary and why they waste so much money. Contractors have high budgets , but team work is essential and you generally will be happier. Down side is you won't be home much doing field service for cat dealers i was lucky to be home a few days a month . I had a crap load of spare money but i was living in utes and motels and eating form servo's. Which actually was better food then we get now đ Generall there will be more money in it as you will ge overtime pay as well and public holidays , but as with most contracts you will need to save it as you might be a few months in between contractors or have to change companies a lot . Superannuation is tricky you'll end up with 10 or more too , its a little easier nowadays but at one stage i think i had a dozen different super accounts form all the jobs. hope this helps ?

Do you know any engineers that do non FIFO work in the mines and do they like what they do? I can't see many downside to what I will be doing expect the obvious of being remote and away fr family. @@davidcowan1583 Hey mate , yeah brother in law is engineer and he loves what he does , and couple other good mates do engineering outside of mining and very happy. Unless you're building a new mine generally engineers are used for their analysis skills and computer work . so if your passionate about building amazing things you may be disappointed. Its a ver repetitive role on site lots of meetings not much happening tho. if you love and passionate about engineering contracting i think would be a better angle to look at i always enjoyed knowing i built something after a project was finished even though i only fixed the gear you get a satisfaction inside. Mining you get nothing its just the same thing over and over. id much rather you go build something that makes a difference thats wha we need in this world smart engineer's who build amazing things i know the moon and safety is very appealing, but you may end up regretting it down the road and id hate for that to happen ! Go be the next elon musk and then ill service your fleet of cars for ya!đ

Unfortunately due to mistakes I made when younger I got divorced and started off here in wa in 2008 with pretty much nothing to my name 15 grand in super , and had to start all over again at 35. my baseball career before that had used any money I had ever made and as a contractor in the old days you had a new super fund every job and the fees ate them mostly away . So after 14 years here ive seen it go form a great place with fantastic highly skilled people to a very depressing place with 80% unskilled workers all because of the ne owner that brought us out 11 years ago. My super is now good and my family has a nice house that we are paying off . and a 6 year old to pay bills as well sees me not wanting to leave as all I can get somewhere els his back on the tools . but as a dad my priorities are supporting my family and giving him the best options I can like my mum and dad gave me . I couldn't do that anywhere else unfortunately so ive decided to sacrifice myself for the family and I can live with that . glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate you saying hi đ

It is back breaking labour out in the heat all day next to a noisey dusty rig. You are putting yourself at risk of developing Silicosis. Exploration is the first to get axed in a downturn, drillers can often find themselves back as an offsider in a downturn etc
I wouldn't do it for anything less than 120,000
On the plus side, you did not mention the bonus of the meals included, that you would otherwise spend at a normal city job. At $25 per day for 3 meals (quite reasonable costing) times 242 work days, you save over $6,000. Then, if you are single and have no fixed off work accommodation, you are saving 34 weeks rent. Just rent for the week you are off. It might be more expensive for 1 week accommodation, but you didn't pay for the previous 2 weeks. So, just a stab in the dark, another $4,500 saved.
As my father told me when I was young, it's not so important the money you make, it's the money you save (as in, the money you didn't spend).
So, probably add 10 grand onto the positive side of your ledger....đ
def save money on food . rent wise i doubt you ll store all your lifes gear you have every time you fly out then constantly arrange a new rental every swing so may not be really applicable. food on site is servo prices and beer not cheap so if a drinker those food savings might balance out if you dirnk every night liek 1/3 of site does but yes food even tho crap will def save money for sure good point

yeah not good on the food side here and in general . im pretty fussy but when everyone else in my crew started complaining i knew i was right. the worst part is they can't even cook fresh food and its not michelin star crap im talk ing soggy bacon soaking in a bay marie for 1 hour . a good night is if your lucky to get hot fresh chips lol ive heard some good stories tho form a few cementers on here so im hopefully the penny pinching crap will end at some stage.

Mining isnt all doom and gloom, like many things in life it's what you make it. So many views in this video i could refute but most aren't that serious like food ect. You do have to be very mentally tough and avoid negative people like they have covid because that shit is contagious. Been in the game 12 years and have absolutely no intention of sitting in perths increasingly terrible traffic twice a day
true , we are getting reports of some good sites starting to appear again and some money getting increased , but def not this company one of our team just had half his bonus taken off him for someone hearing him say something they didn't like but as its a confidential dob in the super couldn't even say who or what its was? yet again no ham on sight for lunches for the whole week. unfortunately this used to be a great place that has been destroyed by toxic management that have no clue how to do their job or to lead people . great to hear you've been lucky enough to find a good one cheers for letting us know.

depending on company and experience id say you'd be looking at 85-100 + per year gross 2/1 roster ours has gone up a little as huge lack of staff at moment. very slowly getting better

just did a simple calculation. work in mine as 2/1 you work 53% more hours than 38 based work. so, you will get 53% more then what you earned now if you work at same hours.
pretty much mate that's where the money is its all about the hours, we do get 10%bonus on base wage most years while they are making bulk money and on site allowances factored in but even with all that starting wage will be around $40 an hour for a fitter at the company i work at. which is decent but with most contractors now earning $80 we have people leaving the big companies hand over fist.
I was on an even time roster of 2 days 2 nights and four days off.
I went through my roster and calendar and determined that going on a 2 and 1 roster meant I would go from 184 shifts per year to 244 shifts per year.
I would have had to have been paid about a third more to be equitable...

Unfortunately a lot are fully qualified heavy diesel mechanic starting rate is 115,000 and even worse the Lv mechanics now on the same wage so not even worth being heavy plant mech just work at Toyota and get the same! Some other companies are finally starting to offer more after 10 years of zero pay rise . So now we are having mass exodus of qualified staff , and left with unskilled traineeship to do skilled work without killing themselves , it wonât be long tho .

A growing field, for sure mate. Always a healthy budget in safety . Until the price of ore drops of course which we are due for. About every ten years since Iâve been working this happens but normally only lasts about a year. But you should have plenty of opportunities open to you in that field.

Roster is ok đ the company has progressively gotten worse over time . I have a 5 year old so my responsibility is family first and have been in a office for 6 years now . And too old to go back on tools . When I leave this job Iâll be leaving mining for ever , so just not worth the pain of starting all over again to me .

Not sure how much for a traineeâs pay for operator. But roughly 80-120,000 for op at where I work depending on experience and levels, if that helps

Just got my first job in mines (Rescue Paramedic) $115,000 7/7 This is my first job since I qualified with my Paramedic degree, happy with that for 12 months or so until I get a job with the ambo's or I might stay on if I enjoy it. (Single no kids)

yes def not for everyone , like ive said many times no kid ever dreams of being a miner, its a doctor astronaut etc but as my dad always told me having a trade means youll always have a job to pay teh bills an di thank him for that lesson .
