I've been working on computers for 25+ years. I just wanted to say thanks for teaching this Old Dog a new trick. I had no idea this tool existed! I've been using the MSDN dev kit FOREVER and even after using it over and over through the years, it's still such a cumbersome process. FYI: This works with Win 11 ISOs created from UUP Dump, also. The menus change a bit, but it's easy enough to get through with the walk through that you have given.

I'm using a different version (v13.0), to shake some time off trim down the windows versions when you apply your changes, instead of applying your changes to all your windows versions, just select 'No' and apply only to your "Pro" version, over here doing exactly what you did, it took only 5 minutes to apply everything (AMD FX(tm)-8350, 16 GiB memory DDR3 and regular SATA mechanical HDD). As for ISO, it only took less than 2 minutes.
    Thank you for the video/tutorial.

NOTE - placing the Toolkit within a folder that had a space in it's name caused the tool to crash when attempting to extract from the ESD. Found a reference to the creator asking someone if they were running from within a folder with a space in the name. Took out the space in mine turnging "MSMG Toolkit" to "MSMG" and no further issues.

I realized this is a bit too spooky for me to mess with so I quit out. I'll just stick to the tried, and true methods of uninstalling after the OS is installed. The last thing you want is a borked Windows install on a new drive/machine. If you're like me, and not very smart, there's tons of options for removing bloatware and MS spying apps. CyberCPU did a very good job detailing all steps involved with this, but I honestly don't trust myself enough to attempt this, lol.

    • @darthex0
      @darthex0 Před 2 lety +2

It's been around for ages under other names, on older windows. You need to have a working system to play around with, separate from your main pc. You could also do virtual, sand boxing but that isn't necessary. The main purpose of these type of toolkits/programs, was to provide for unattended installation on multiple systems. To reduce the actual time it takes to install OS's and software(that is why it has the option to "bake in" 3rd party programs in the ISO as well as remove programs) in a large number of computers. Say for example, all the computers in a classroom or office. It saves alotta time and allows for the customisation and management of redundant software. This in turn provides the most efficient use of system resources, an important feature when hardware was less powerfull. Now it is a valid means of reducing external meddling in your resource allocations. Controlling automated tasks and usage at the local level. Maintaining control over your time and or money.🙃

I'm late to the party, but I have a very important tip: before all of that, make a separate usb bootable drive with *clean, untampered Windows*. You can use Rufus to burn the clean ISO you got straight to your USB stick, or use the Media Creation Tool to automate the process. Everyone who claims to be a Windows power user needs one anyway, and if you screw up your ISO mod, the "clean" drive will be your failsafe.

Instead of burning .ISOs to individual USB drives, use Ventoy. Once Ventoy is installed on your USB you can just drag as many ISOs as you have space for on it. When you boot your computer Ventoy builds a list of ISOs on the drive for you to choose from. It also works (on the fly) with Legacy or UEFI installs. No more stacks of USB drives just for installs.
One USB to rule them ALL!

And do not boot at all on Shutdown and boot to Ventoy USBs. And that is 4 different USBs. SO, just a suggestion, about that great stick booter, if you haven't upgraded to the latest version, only try one USB, and do a trial to see if it boots.
As ALL i got was a Ventoy screen with a list of OS's, but non booted, out of 5!
I went to latest Yumi and it has what I needed more, which is up to 4GB of persistence for each OS I want to use!
And IT never worked 8 years ago, but poofy, works great now for me!

Additionally, Whenever I proceed with the step relevant to the " Extract Source from Custom Windows ISO Image "... the MSMG Toolkit always crashes and closes; I have even tried to re-install a fresh copy of Windows 10, and the exact same issue repeats... time and time again. :(

Hello! I did everything exactly as instructed in your video and succeeded. However, the original Windows IS0 that I downloaded from Microsoft (on 11-19-2021) was 4.28 GB and the custom ISO per your video increased to 4.44 GB. Shouldn't the custom ISO have a smaller file size? Thank you!

When you convert the ESD image to WIM it gets bigger because the ESD uses better compression. However, the tool is unable to manipulate the ESD image so it has to be converted to WIM.

The MSMG Toolkit link for download has been taken down for gross violation of MEGA's terms of service. "Due to recent takedown of Toolkit's primary Mega account, all the Toolkit Pack contents has been lost.
So, from now on only Toolkit's custom packs will be available, the rest of pack files the user needs to get themselves and copy them to the respective packs folders as specified by the Toolkit error messages."

    Background Information:
The USB3.0 stack is a special case. It contains a USB controller, a USB3.0 Root Hub, and, for Intel devices, an eXtensible host controller. The USB3.0 controller is connected to and available on the PCI bus, which is visible to the WinPE OS. HIIClient can see it and choose a driver for it. However, the Root Hub and eXtensible host controller devices are not on the PCI bus; they are on a separate USB3.0 bus.
The USB3.0 bus is not visible to WinPE by default because WinPE does not have a USB3.0 controller driver by default. That means when HIIClient.exe asks WinPE what devices are connected, WinPE will not return information about the USB3 hub or eXtensible host controller. Because there is no USB3.0 controller driver, the bus (and any devices connected to it) cannot be seen. WinPE will return only information about the USB3.0 controller, even if driver assignments are made for the remaining USB3.0 devices.
    Resolution:
The solution is to inject the USB3.0 controller drivers into your boot.wim image. This makes the drivers available in WinPE. Essentially, the USB3.0 controller device will be installed in WinPE, so when HIIClient runs it can detect the full USB3.0 bus that is controlled by the USB3.0 controller, and select the appropriate drivers for all the USB3.0 devices from the HII driver library. Sometimes it is sufficient to inject just the USB3.0 controller driver, and other times drivers for all USB3.0 stack devices should be injected.
You can use the DISM GUI tool for Windows to add the USB 3 drivers to the Boot image file before using Rufus to create the USB install drive. THIS IS ONLY IF YOU CARE ABOUT LEVERAGING USB 3 SPEEDS DURING INSTALL.

I am primarily a Linux user, but I do have need to install Windows for others and on at least one machine of my own. That said, the biggest frustration are the new builds, and to have to redo this every time is an uphill battle. No one wants to have to reinstall regularly unless there would be some way to just update to your newly may stripped down version, even that's a hassle. But, I suppose if you must have Windows, then you have to decide to what length do you want to have control and how willing you are to strip it.
The other option is to create a stripped out version and simply run it offline as in the old days of no internet if you need to run specific tasks that do not require internet. And, if you do need to go online to retrieve the occasional whatever, you can decide how much risk it would be to achieve your task. Either way, thanks for the great content here!
